Spokesman for Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, Michelle Knight thanks community, asks for privacy
on May 12, 2013 at 10:15 AM, updated May 12, 2013 at 3:31 PM

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A spokesman for Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight and Gina DeJesus thanked the community and police Sunday morning, and pleaded for privacy while the women recover from their long abduction.

Despite numerous interview requests, the women will not be speaking publicly while the criminal case against their accused captor, Ariel Castro, progresses, said attorney Jim Wooley of the Jones Day law firm, who read a statement on behalf of Knight, DeJesus, Berry and their families. CNN Exclusive: Hunted and haunted, Castro's brothers say they didn't know
By Melissa Gray and Martin Savidge, CNN
updated 2:57 PM EDT, Sun May 12, 2013

Watch CNN's exclusive interview with Ariel Castro's brothers starting Monday at 5 a.m. ET on "Early Start."

(CNN) -- When Ariel Castro was arrested last week on charges of kidnapping and raping three women for more than a decade in his Cleveland home, police also detained his two brothers, showing their mugshots to the world.

Police released Pedro and Onil Castro a few days later, saying neither man had anything to do with the alleged abductions and torture of Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight.

The men, both in their 50s, are now in hiding in an undisclosed location, as are other family members, including their 71-year-old mother. The brothers say their homes have had rocks thrown through the windows -- one of them was broken into -- and they have been receiving death threats online.

In an exclusive interview with CNN, which took place outside Cleveland, the Castro brothers say they are grateful the three girls are finally free and safe, but they are haunted by missing clues and hunted by the media.

Why were these guys arrested in the first place? There must have been some reason that the police hauled them in? The 3 women would be able to say if anyone else was involved. They must have cleared them right?

Without knowing anything that you don't Cookie, that's what I came up with too. I figured that if the girls didn't know the brothers, and they weren't blindfolded while being abused, then they could clear them.

Photographs give a glimpse of Ariel Castro's yard
updated 7:20 AM EDT, Tue May 14, 2013

Cleveland (CNN) -- Bicycles. Barbed wire. A chain.

Those are of just some of the items found in kidnapping suspect Ariel Castro's Cleveland yard, according to photographs taken over the weekend by a neighbor and obtained by CNN.

The neighbor asked not to be identified and said that he took the photographs because he wants people to know what's there.

The images show a cluttered yard.

Inside Cleveland's haunted house

A garage sits in the background, while basketball nets, a ladder and what looks to be a pile of debris rest in the foreground.

One of the photographs shows a thick spool of barbed wire; another shows a chain.

On Monday, CNN affiliate WKYC posted jail logs showing his activity since Thursday.

Castro is on suicide prevention watch, standard procedure for high-profile inmates. He cannot interact with other inmates and does not have their privileges. Castro is checked on every 10 minutes.

Mostly, the logs show him doing mundane activities -- "resting on mat," "eating chow," and "making Kool-Aid."

Though some entries stand out.

"Inmate is walking around cell naked," read one.

I wonder if any of the women were familiar with the dogs?  I hope the dogs get good homes.

Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, Michelle Knight Update: Dogs reportedly found in home of accused Cleveland kidnapper

(CBS/WOIO) The Cleveland dog warden is holding three canines discovered in the home and car of accused Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro, CBS affiliate WOIO reports.

The warden, John Baird, told WOIO that a Chihuahua was found by police in Castro's car as he was arrested, and two other dogs that appear to be terrier-poodle mixes were found in his home.

The dogs appeared to be in good health, but needed heavy grooming, Baird told the station.

The FBI reportedly asked Baird to hold the dogs in case kidnapping victims Amanda Berry, 27, Gina DeJesus, 23, and Michelle Knight, 32, wanted the animals.

I wonder if the girls would want the dogs. They may just serve as a reminder to horrific memories. I hope the dogs find a good, loving home, regardless of who has them.

How to Donate
The Cleveland Courage Fund of the Cleveland Foundation was established by Cleveland council members Brian Cummins, Matt Zone, and Dona Brady after the discovery of three women held captive in a Cleveland home for a decade. The fund, so named because of the courage shown by these women, will directly benefit Gina DeJesus, Michelle Knight, and Amanda Berry and her daughter.

All money raised – 100 percent – will benefit the survivors. The Cleveland Foundation will not assess fees on this fund and will issue a tax receipt for all donations received.

As of Tuesday, May 21, donations to the Cleveland Courage Funds of the Cleveland Foundation and Key Bank total more than $650,000, with more than 6,800 individual donations. Thank you.

Cleveland Kidnapping Victims Grateful for Support, Privacy in Letter
By ALEXIS SHAW | Good Morning America – 1 hour 41 minutes ago

The letter in full:

Amanda, Gina & Michelle Offer Thanks to Community

We are the attorneys who have come together to help Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight.

These three brave women have asked us to give this message to everyone who has expressed concern and support.

Amanda, Gina and Michelle want you to know they are doing well. They are happy and safe and continue to heal, a process that requires time and privacy.

Since we first spoke publicly on their behalf, it has been wonderful to see that their plea for privacy has been answered and respected. The media has disappeared from their front lawns and their neighborhoods are no longer experiencing traffic jams from news vehicles and curious onlookers. You have no idea how much this means to them and has helped in their recovery process.

Their first public message included a simple, heartfelt thanks to well-wishers and supporters for "everything you are doing." That "everything" now includes perhaps the greatest gift of all – the space and time to reconnect with their families and recover and rebuild their lives. And so they say again, "Thank you. Thank you so much!"

We continue to receive numerous generous offers to support Amanda, Gina and Michelle and their families.

The outpouring of public support has been nothing short of remarkable.

To have complete strangers offer loving support in the form of money, goods and services, reaching out to help like a family member, is appreciated in ways that are impossible to put into words. Amanda, Gina and Michelle, who have asked for nothing, are frankly overwhelmed by it all.

You have touched their hearts in ways they will never forget. So again, they collectively say "Thank you. Thank you so much!"

We understand some people may be confused about the best way to help. We are in direct, private and ongoing conversations with Amanda, Gina and Michelle about many matters, including your generosity.

While they appreciate the generous offers of goods and services, for now, they are trying to assess what they need today and for years to come. That's why donations to the Cleveland Courage Funds are so welcome.

We are confident the Cleveland Courage Funds are the legitimate, appropriate and most effective vehicles for this effort. In fact, donations to the Cleveland Courage Funds are already being distributed to the four survivors consistent with the concepts behind the trusts that are being set up. And as soon as the trusts are in place, one-hundred percent of all donations to the Cleveland Courage Funds will go into those trusts.

Cleveland is known for its generosity. Amanda, Gina, Michelle and Amanda's daughter are indeed grateful for that generosity, as are we.

Kathy Joseph, Heather Kimmel, Henry Hilow, and James Wooley are attorneys representing the survivors on a pro bono basis.

Jailhouse logs detail Ariel Castro's hygiene, nudity
7:48 AM, May 30, 2013

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WKYC) -- Accused kidnapper Ariel Castro is expected to undergo a psychiatric evaluation this week, and could be moved off the mental health floor of the Cuyahoga County jail depending on the results.

Jail guards are required to record their observations of Castro every 10 minutes because he's on suicide watch.

Records the Investigator Tom Meyer obtained show that Castro spends much of his time resting, sleeping, eating, and looking out the window of his small cell.

One guard observed him walking around his cell naked on the same day that he asked a guard for the time and for the temperature outside.

Castro has been in isolation for only a few weeks and already he's getting a taste of what the three women experienced inside his Seymour Avenue home. Police say they were allowed outside only twice in the 10 years they were held captive.
