Ariel Castro’s Neighbor Admits To Raping Children, Killing Two Women 15 Years Ago

CLEVELAND (AP) –  A sex offender accused of killing two women more than 15 years ago and raping children pleaded guilty on Monday to hundreds of charges, crying when some of his surviving victims addressed him.
 
Acevedo, 49, agreed to plead guilty to 297 counts, including murdering the women and kidnapping and raping children. He accepted a life prison term under the plea deal.

The two 20-years-to-life sentences for aggravated murder and sentences for other crimes total 445 years, the judge said.

The murder charges involve a Cleveland neighbor, Pamela Pemberton, who was killed in 1994, and 18-year-old Christina Adkins, who was pregnant when she disappeared in 1995.

Acevedo also was charged with rape and sexual assault involving attacks on minors, some dating back more than 25 years. He folded his cuffed handed together as Judge Michael Donnelly read the terms of the plea deal and explained it.

Acevedo's case is the latest among a group of high-profile cases involving violence against women in and around Cleveland.

Authorities re-examined the disappearances of women in the city following the escape of three women held captive for a decade in the run-down home of Ariel Castro.

The prosecutor's office said Acevedo most recently lived about a block away from Castro, who kidnapped the three women when they were in their teens or early 20s, imprisoned them in his home and raped them repeatedly, fathering a child with one of them.
 
At Monday's sentencing, FBI agent Andrew Burke said investigators reopening missing-person cases in the area began to focus on Acevedo during the summer based on discrepancies in earlier law enforcement interviews, his sex crime conviction and tips.

Acevedo, faced with the mounting evidence, admitted killing the women after authorities agreed to skip the death penalty if he detailed the crimes, Burke said. Acevedo described the killings and pinpointed the locations, all information consistent with details developed by investigators, Burke said.

CLEVELAND -- The Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's office says Jeremi J. Alicea, of Bedford, has been charged with 22 counts related to child pornography.
Alicea is the nephew of Ariel Castro, the man who kidnapped and raped three women over the course of 10 years. The girls escaped last year and Castro hanged himself in prison.
Alicea, 26, who turns 27 on Friday, was charged with 21 counts of pandering sexually-oriented matter involving a minor and one count of possessing criminal tool, according to court records.
His arraignment is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. February 13 on the 12th Floor of the Justice Center.
Court records show that the alleged crimes occurred September 17 and October 8 and the "criminal tool" charge is for a laptop he owns.

CLEVELAND (AP) - Attorneys for two women held in a Cleveland home and abused for a decade say Joan Rivers should apologize for comparing living in her daughter's guest room with the captivity they experienced.

Rivers and her daughter were discussing their reality show Tuesday on NBC's "Today" show when she complained about her living arrangements, saying, "Those women in the basement in Cleveland had more space."

A Wednesday statement from attorneys for Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus calls Rivers' remark hurtful and shocking. The attorneys say the women have endured painful media attention and the comment is "a new low" that warrants an apology.

Rivers' publicist hasn't responded to messages seeking comment.

Joan Rivers isn't backing down from her latest controversial comments.
The 80-year-old comedienne says she will not apologize over an appearance on the "Today" show Tuesday in which she compared living arrangements with her daughter to the ordeal of three women held captive for a decade by Ariel Castro.
 
Following outrage on social media and calls from two of the victims' attorneys to apologize, Rivers remains defiant.
 
"I'm a comedienne," she told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "I know what those girls went through. It was a little, stupid joke. There is nothing to apologize for. I made a joke. That's what I do. Calm down. Calm f------ down. I'm a comedienne. They're free, so let's move on."

According to TMZ, she said, "One of them has a book deal. Neither are in a psych ward. They're OK. I bet you within 3 years one of them will be on 'Dancing with the Stars.'"

The 33-year-old is now known as Lily, a name she picked after her favorite flower. She escaped on May 6, 2013, along with Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Miss Berry's six-year-old daughter from the Ohio home.
Miss Knight also revealed that she has cut ties with the women she was held captive with for so many dark years.

She told People that the three survivors have put distance between each other as they all come to terms with the ordeal they suffered.
 

Miss Knight said: 'I love them and they love me. Hopefully we'll all get back together again.'
The 33-year-old is attending cooking school and has written a memoir Finding Me which comes out on May 6, the one-year anniversary of the women's escape.

CLEVELAND — Ariel Castro deliberately left doors to his house unlocked for months preceding the day three women he had held captive for more than a decade escaped.

“He intentionally became much more negligent in the house about locking the door and keeping them inside,” Craig Weintraub, one of two attorneys representing Ariel Castro, revealed in an interview with WKYC.
 
Castro explained that he had become attached to the daughter he had with Berry. Weintraub said Castro dismissed any thoughts of killing the three women because of his relationship with the child.

“He didn’t have the courage to go to the police department and surrender, and the only way this was going to happen is if he was negligent and allowed them to leave the house and be able to find a way out while he was gone a few hours,” Weintraub said.
 
Castro told Weintraub that he knew he would spend the rest of his life in prison. Weintraub said he wasn’t the least bit surprised Castro killed himself because he says Castro demonstrated suicidal tendencies in the Cuyahoga County Jail and when he was transferred to Lorain Correctional.

“There weren’t any cemeteries that would take his remains. They certainly don’t want to be subject to vandalism,” Weintraub said.

Weintraub and his co-counsel, Jay Schlachet, were the subject of death threats but have no regrets taking on the case.

Weintraub says a number of Castro’s family members have been verbally abused and harassed during the past year. Castro’s son, Anthony, changed his name after his home was ransacked and profanity was scrawled on his front door.
