Van der Sloot intends to wed, possibly blocking extradition
Sunday June 2, 2013 12:18 PM

Imprisoned murderer Joran van der Sloot plans to wed his Peruvian girlfriend for love, not to avoid extradition to the United States in connection with the disappearance of an Alabama teenager, his attorney said yesterday.

Van der Sloot, a 25-year-old Dutch citizen, is serving 28 years in prison for killing Peruvian business student Stephany Flores, 21, in 2010 after meeting her while playing poker in a Lima casino.

When his term ends, he is to be sent to the United States to face charges of extortion stemming from the unsolved disappearance of U.S. citizen Natalee Holloway on the Dutch Caribbean island of Aruba in 2005.

“He is getting married for the simple reason that he is in love and wants to formalize it,” said his attorney, Max Altez.

Altez said the marriage could be held in the next few weeks if Van der Sloot’s grandmother sends him his birth certificate and if Peruvian authorities grant him a marriage license.

His Peruvian girlfriend is Leydi Figueroa Uceda, who has visited Van der Sloot in prison, Altez said.

Joran must be wanting attention.

He killed two women and some other woman wants to marry him?

What does that say about the bride?

$$$$$$$$$$  ?

Please let me qualify that.  She wants $$$ and stands to make some with Joran through media etc.  Every once in a while they will  need to create some kind of drama, like an expected baby or some domestic thing, and then more news articles, more $$$.  Sort of one of those symbiotic relationships.  They both stand to make money. Of course, this is just all my own humble opinion.   I see its being bandied about in the news again that the marriage could keep Joran from being extradited to the U.S., and I thought we had finally put that puppy to bed.  If need be, I can search that out again and post it.

Wedding Bells for Natalie Holloway Suspect Joran van der Sloot

by Barbie Latza Nadeau May 31, 2013 4:45 AM EDT

The 26-year-old Dutchman and suspect in Natalee Holloway’s disappearance—now serving time for the murder of a Peruvian girl—is set to marry, his lawyer confirms.

While no one can know for sure whether van ser Sloot and Figueroa Uced are truly in love, marrying a Peruvian and fathering her child may save van der Sloot from further punishment. In 2010, van der Sloot was charged with attempting to extort $250,000 from Beth Holloway in exchange for the exact location and details of her daughter’s death. Holloway gave him $25,000 as a down payment, but he took the money and traveled to Peru to play in a poker tournament, where he ultimately met Flores, lured her to his Lima hotel room and then killed her after she found incriminating materials relating to the Holloway case on his personal computer. He pled guilty in his trial and was sentenced to 28 years, two years short of the maximum sentence of 30 years. He was also ordered to pay the Flores family around $75,000 in damages. He faces 25 years in the American extortion case.

Last May, an accord was reached between the United States and Peru, and van der Sloot was supposed to be extradited to face charges in the United States last year on the grounds that he was a foreign national. The extradition stalled after van der Sloot’s lawyer was able to negotiate an eleventh-hour deal to keep the Dutchman in Peru. Now, by marrying a local Peruvian, he can automatically apply for Peruvian citizenship, which will hinder America’s chances of extraditing him.

I

Thank you for your research and posting the article San.  It looks like it's a possibility.     After thinking about it for a while, I realize what I was thinking about was when we had read some that were in prison in Peru might be able to be transferred to serve out their term in the Netherlands, but we figured out Joran wouldn't be eligible because he was in for murder.  The ruling was intended for those on things like drug charges etc.

#1 - I bet Peru won't allow the marriage
#2 - I seriously doubt a marriage now would change the extradition process/plans

I agree.

He was "maybe" getting married in February too.

Four guests were going to be allowed that time.

IF the paperwork was approved.  (Hey grandma, where's my birth certificate!)

DIDN'T HAPPEN.

http://www.rtl.nl/components/actueel/rtlnieuws/2013/01_januari/27/binnenland/joran_van_der_sloot_treft_voorbereidingen_huwelijk_trouwen.xml

Seems like there was at least one more "announcement" of marriage too that didn't happen.

He just wants attention.

It's sickening.

I find it very hard to believe that an inmate already in the process of being extradited could avoid it by getting married.

That just doesn't make sense to me.

IIRC at one time the same lawyer that is putting out all these (BS IMO) stories even said Joran getting married would not affect the extradition.

I read tonight that he's getting married because he's in love and not to avoid extradition.

That monster doesn't know what love is.

http://www.rttnews.com/2129164/joran-van-der-sloot-to-get-married-in-prison-in-peru.aspx

Max Altez, the lawyer for Van der Sloot, says that the marriage is happening because he's in love and not a ploy to help Sloot gain permanent residency in Peru, which would make sure he avoids being extradited to the United States when he finishes serving his current prison sentence.

"He is getting married for the simple reason that he is in love and wants to formalize it," Altez said. "No, one thing is not related to the other."

‘Venezuela drops claim against ABC-Islands’
MONDAY, 3 JUNE 2013 14:30

ORANJESTAD — Neighboring country Venezuela has dropped its claim against Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao. This claim dates from the period of government of the former president, Hugo Chávez. However, in an interview with news agency Novum the Dutch minister for Foreign Affairs, Frans Timmermans (PvdA), stated that the relations have improved and that Venezuela respects the territorial integrity of the Kingdom.Timmermans stated this on the eve of his visit to the South American country. Together with Premier Mike Eman (AVP) and outgoing Premier Daniel Hodge from Curaçao he will leave today to strengthen the relations between the country and our Kingdom. Timmernans signed a basic resolution this morning, which among other things is to make it easier for Aruba to reach agreement on energy issues. According to Premier Eman, negotiations were obstructed in the past because of Venezuela’s wish for an agreement for the entire Kingdom first. In the past negotiations were held on the Venezuelan state-owned company PDVSA taking-over the Valero-refinery in San Nicolas.

The agreement between the Netherlands and Venezuela regards admittance of citizens and the use of each others airspace. When asked if during his visit he would raise the previous matter of Venezuelan having used threatening language towards the Netherlands, Timmermans replied no claims will be made. “Therefore, neither do I have the need to discuss these claims. We are neighboring countries and as such respect each other.” In 2009 Chávez accused the Netherlands of letting the American army use the ABC-Islands to prepare an attack on his country. Moreover, he supposedly said that from a historic point of view Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao belonged to Venezuela and should actually become a part of that country again.
