My daughter, Donna Jou, www.donnajou.com ,19, an honor premed student at San Diego State University was abducted by a three times convicted sex offender, John Steven Burgess, June 23, 2007.
Burgess was hiding behind 5th Amendment Right for 2 years not to tell us what he did to my innocent child.
March of 2009, Burgess confess to killing Donna and dumping her into the Pacific Ocean.
With NO body, No DNA, no credible witness, court accepts his plea and sentenced him to 5 years prison.
We were notified by the Ca. Department of Correction that Burgess will be released on April 15, 2011 - LESS THAN 2 YEARS INCARCERATED FOR SUCH A MAJOR CRIME.
One can almost guarantee that Burgess will commit another crime soon after he gets out of jail; however, you just have to hope he doesn't hurt anyone in the process of committing his next crime. Certainly, with a sociopath and/or psychopath like Burgess, this is a very big "IF".

San Diego, CA……Donna Jou went missing on June 23, 2007 after meeting with a man who answered an ad placed on Craig’s List offering tutoring by Ms. Jou. That man, known as both John Steven Burgess and Logan Anderson, eventually confessed to playing a part in her death and disposing of her body from a boat in the Pacific Ocean around San Diego, CA. Since the day that Donna Jou was last seen riding off with Burgess on a motorcycle, her family has waged a campaign to know the truth.

Appearing on The Susan Murphy Milano show on March 31, Donna’s father, Reza Jou and business partner, Karim Pirani of SafeList.com, were able to open up questions surrounding this case to the hosts. Susan Murphy Milano is a nationally known radio host and expert on intimate partner violence. On the show, questions about Burgess arose, explicitly about his prior acts and patterns of behavior before meeting up with Donna Jou. Burgess is a registered sex offender who had failed to report in California, fled to Florida, and was subsequently arrested there when the investigators started looking at him as a suspect.
It was determined on the radio show that there are many loose ends when it comes to the investigation of John Steven Burgess. For someone whose income arose from subletting rooms in his rented home to foreign students, he was able to post a large sum of cash bond. It’s also been determined that there is approximately $200 a month being deposited into his commissary account since he’s been incarcerated. Who is making those deposits?

On April 15, John Steven Burgess will be a free man once again. He will not be monitored, but will report to a probation officer for three years, as well as report as a sexual predator every time he moves according to the release papers. It was failure to do that which led to one of his arrests, will he be more prudent this time?

My hope for him is he gets in some major trouble while serving time and doesn't get released even in a year.  If that is what it takes to keep him behind bars, that is truly my hope.

A convicted sex offender who admitted to causing the death of a college student was released from Los Angeles County Jail today after serving half of a five year sentence for involuntary manslaughter.

John Steven Burgess, 41, told police he gave San Diego State University student Donna Jou cocaine, heroin and alcohol and threw her body into the ocean after she overdosed. Despite an extensive search, Jou's body was never found and the most severe charge authorities could pin on Burgess was involuntary manslaughter.

"It's an injustice to all of us," said Lisa Jou, Donna's older sister. "There is a fatal flaw in the system. You're almost telling [criminals that] if you can dispose the body and no one can find it, it's one year, maximum."

HOLLYWOOD – A man convicted in the 2007 overdose death of a Rancho Santa Margarita woman he met via Craigslist is back behind bars on a parole violation after two women who responded to a recent Craigslist ad for a roommate told police about a disturbing encounter with him.

 

Burgess, 42, was arrested Monday night in his apartment in the 5500 block of Barton Avenue in Hollywood after the two women went to police after figuring out who Burgess was after meeting him.

They had responded to an ad offering free rent in exchange for cooking and cleaning, and in his apartment, according to a broadcast report, was a groggy woman dressed only in underwear and shaking uncontrollably.

Burgess reportedly told the women, both writers, that he had a true-life story he wanted to tell them.

"Whatever they observed in the time they were there caused them enough concern that they contacted police," Rayner told City News Service.

 

Despite an extensive search, Donna Jou's body has never been found.

 

Jou's parents said they believed their daughter still may be alive – possibly the victim of human trafficking – and that Burgess made up a story about her disappearance only to be rewarded by prosecutors with a favorable plea agreement.
