FBI Expands Search for Missing Teen
Kaelynne Paez, 13, was last seen Sunday morning near her home just north of the Mexican border
Sep 13, 2012

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is seeking the public’s help in locating a missing teenager, authorities confirmed.

FBI Special Agent Darrell Foxworth with the FBI field office in San Diego said investigators are looking for 13-year-old Kaelynne Paez, a teen from Heber, Calif., just north of the Mexican border

According to the FBI, Paez was last seen on the morning of Sept. 9 near Heber Avenue in Imperial County.

“Her family hasn't had any contact with her, so there is a lot of concern with her well-being, where she may be who she may be with,” Foxworth told NBC Wednesday night.

FBI Joins in on Search for Missing Heber Girl
September 12, 2012

 ::snipping2::

The search began with the Imperial County Sheriff's Office on the case but they later needed to bring in reinforcement. "We've been on it (the case) ever since and until now. We're still involved in it although the FBI has taken over the investigation," said Jimmy Duran, Investigations Director for the Imperial County Sheriff's Office.

Duran says there was reasoning behind this decision. "The reason is based on the information that we developed through our investigation we felt there was suspicious circumstances in which we would need additional resources to do this investigation and that's why we called our local FBI office.Our local ICE office also came and was called to help out with this investigation," said Duran.

Investigators are focusing on cell phone and internet use by Kaelynne Paez, who uses the nickname "Boo." One theory is that she may have met someone who contacted her on an adult-oriented dating website, where she claimed her age as 19 and that she is in college.

 12:01 a.m., Sept. 14, 2012

IMPERIAL COUNTY — Imperial County authorities have called in the FBI to help find a 13-year-old Heber girl missing since Sunday under what investigators call suspicious circumstances.

Kaelynne Paez was last seen in her home on Heber Avenue about 9 a.m. Sunday. Her brother reported her missing at 1:40 p.m., Imperial County sheriff’s Sgt. Jimmy Duran said Thursday.

“There are suspicious circumstances around the disappearance of this juvenile,” Duran said. “We are concerned for her safety. She could be in danger.”

He declined to elaborate on why investigators believe she might be in danger.
