Protect your profile: Facebook cracking down on ‘fake likes’
September 4, 2012

HOUSTON—Facebook is taking a close look at spam and what it calls “fake likes.”

You’ll want to make sure your profile doesn’t get caught up in the crackdown.

At the very least, Facebook says it will delete any “likes” it thinks are fake. Beyond that, any Facebook account dishing out fake likes could also be deleted.

“Likes” are a Facebook user’s way of giving a “thumbs up” for a post, product, company, fan page, etc. For companies that have a Facebook page, these “likes” can be a valuable way to promote their products. The more you have, the better.
 ::snipping2::
For most people who “play by the rules,” this shouldn’t be an issue, but there are still some things you need to be aware of.

Many fake likes are generated by compromised Facebook accounts. In short, malware and other trickery can take over your profile, just so it can go around and click “like” or spread spam.

Never click these types of links on Facebook:

>> “No name” stores with steep discounts (usually clothing or electronics)
>> “Have you seen yourself in this video/photo?”
>> “See who looked at your profile” (it’s impossible to track this, don’t click!)

These are all tricks scammers use to get access to real Facebook accounts for one reason or another.

Facebook Cracking Down on Fake ‘Likes’
September 27, 2012

If it looks like lots of Facebook pages are shedding fans, it’s because they are.

But, then again, they aren’t.

Facebook has begun a purge of fake accounts and “Likes” as part of a set of site improvements announced last month. The result has been lower numbers on fan pages, including some of the site’s most popular ones, but no actual loss of real followers.

On August 31, Facebook announced plans for improvements to its “site integrity systems.” That, according to a blog post, included increased automated efforts to sniff out and delete fake accounts or Likes that had been illicitly sold or gained by otherwise shady means.

“A Like that doesn’t come from someone truly interested in connecting with a Page benefits no one …,” the post read. “When a Page and fan connect on Facebook, we want to ensure that connection involves a real person interested in hearing from a specific Page and engaging with that brand’s content.”

On Thursday morning, Zynga’s Texas HoldEm Poker page had lost almost 200,000 Likes since Tuesday, according to Facebook analytics site PageData. Pop star Lady Gaga lost about 66,000 during that same two-day span, and “The Simpsons” dropped about 21,000.

Facebook confirmed to CNN that the slipping Likes numbers are part of the site upgrade.

Pages Removes False Accounts
TechCrunch, 5 hours ago
September 27, 2012

“Illegitimately created accounts are being deleted, and Likes gained from malware, compromised accounts, or deceived users are being removed,” TechCrunch reports.

“Wednesday's purge comes nearly a month after Facebook announced plans to crack down on zombie accounts and likes, as part of an effort to guarantee authenticity across the site,” The Verge writes.

“The move follows the social network's admission that 8.7% of its users are not ‘real,’ many having been set up by spammers who use them to artificially make pages appear more popular,” writes BBC News. “The issue poses a problem for Facebook as it seeks to expand its targeted advertising service.”

“In the end, this eradication should come as good news to most users because it means less spam and phishing on the social network,” according to CNet.

“It's not clear quite how many accounts have been wiped out, but plenty of pages have seen massive drops in their fan numbers over the last two days,” Gizmodo reports.
