French Alps Shooting Leaves 4 Dead, 2 Little Girls Survive
By INES NOVACIC
Sept. 6, 2012
 ::snipping2::
She stayed so still, police thought she was dead.

For eight hours, a 4-year-old girl lay under the body of her mother, beside another unidentified female with a Swedish passport, in the back-seat of a BMW in a car park near the town of Chevaline in the French Alps, officials said.

In the front seat of the vehicle, her father was slumped over, shot dead. A few feet away from the vehicle, her older sister was shot in the head three times and badly beaten, but still alive.

"We usually see this kind of scene in a movie rather than real life," Annecy prosecutor Eric Maillaud said, adding that the reason for the "dramatic nature" of the killings was unknown, but that the killer did not shoot haphazardly, but "targeted his victims."

French Alps shooting: 7-year-old survivor out of coma, police wait to interview girl
Agence France Presse | Updated: September 10, 2012 08:34 IST
 ::snipping2::
Annecy: Police were on Monday waiting to question a young British girl seen as the key to solving the mystery of a shooting on a lonely forest road that left three members of her family and a cyclist dead.

Doctors placed seven-year-old Zainab al-Hilli in an artificial coma following the murders last Wednesday to help her recover from a fractured skull.

Officials on Sunday said she had regained consciousness but warned that she was still under sedation and her speech was not yet audible.

Her four-year-old sister Zeena, who survived unhurt for eight hours after the attack hidden beneath her mother's body, has already been seen by police but was unable to provide any information.

It was not clear how long investigators specialising in dealing with child witnesses would have to wait before speaking to Zainab.

Investigators at the home of a family, who were murdered in a shooting spree during a holiday in the French Alps, have revealed that four of the shooting victims were killed with the same gun. It fuels speculation that they were targeted by a highly-trained contract killer.

She has since regained consciousness and was able to hold a brief discussion with officers in France, sources close to the investigation have said.

A source said: "They have been able to speak to her but this was just an initial meeting. They could not go into any detail and the child was very tired. It was not permitted for the discussion to go any further."

French Alps shooting: Girl who survived French shooting saw ‘one bad man’
September 14, 2012

A LITTLE girl who survived the shooting in the French Alps that claimed the lives of three members of her family, saw “one bad man”, it was reported last night.

• French police hunt British-registered black Mitsubishi Pajero 4x4

• Vehicle last seen heading to Swiss border

The news came as Zainab al-Hilli, seven, was said to have returned home to Britain with two family members and UK police officers after being considered well enough to travel.

She had suffered gun injuries to her shoulder and head in the attack near Annecy on 5 September.

But before she left, Zainab is reported to have met police investigators and told them that she only saw one person during the shootings.

Her claim appears to confirm the belief that the assassination was carried out by one man, and that it was likely the killer would have reloaded his gun at least once.

Zainab is understood to be the only witness to the shooting in which her engineer father, Saad al-Hilli, 50, died along with his wife, Iqbal, 47, his mother-in-law and a French cyclist, Sylvain Mollier, 45, Police said they had learned “some information” from Zainab, but British police also intended to speak to her.

Her sister, Zeena, four, who hid under her mother’s skirt for eight hours after they were shot, returned to the UK this week

Police find Pakistan link in French Alps murder case
September 23, 2012

London, Sept. 23 (ANI): Investigations into the murder of British engineer Saad al-Hilli, his wife, mother-in-law, and a passing cyclist have led to a mystery man in Pakistan, who is believed to have been in touch with Saad in recent months.

Earlier, one of Saad's closest friends - Gary Aked - had become concerned about his friend's extreme anti-Israeli rants in internet chat rooms. Aked, who knew Saad for nearly 20 years, said his friend used to spend hours bombarding Arabic chatrooms with his beliefs on Israel, the invasion of Iraq and the 9/11 attack on the Twin Towers, reports the Mirror.

Police are investigating the theory that he had been radicalised.

"Saad's strong beliefs, which would be viewed by many as being -extreme, is something of interest to the investigation. The police are trying to -establish whether Saad had crossed the line, and one name has come up on the radar and this person is from Pakistan," a source said.

"It is the first time that Pakistan has been brought up in -relation to the investigation. Extremists from that country, where there are a number of terror cells, are regular visitors to these chatroom sites. Saad could have made himself a target," the source added.

Gary revealed how Saad had recently replaced his online profile, showing a picture of his eldest daughter with an image of an Arabic -leader.

French detectives have said they are keeping an open mind about the motive for the murders. (ANI)

France shooting: British victim 'was selling second home'
The British engineer murdered at an isolated Alpine beauty spot was on the verge of selling a ruined property 400 miles away across France, it emerged on Thursday night.
September 20, 2012

 ::snipping2::

The Al-Hilli family were all murdered as they sat in their BMW estate, on the outskirts of the nearby village of Chevaline, while French cyclist Sylvain Mollier, 45, died next to the car.

Until now, French detectives assumed that Mr Al-Hilli’s £1 million family home in Clayton, Surrey, was their sole residence.

But Sud-Ouest (South West), the regional newspaper, tonight revealed that they also had an ancient house at Saint-Macaire, in the Gironde department, some 30 miles from Bordeaux.

 It is a significant find because it proves that Mr Al-Hilli had investment interests in the country where his horrific murder took place.

The fact that he was involved in a property business deal will also be of great interest to investigators.

Mr Al-Hilli had bought the property in the medieval village, which has a population of just over 2000 people, in the 1990s for an unknown sum, and had been seen working on it over the years.

Despite this, it is today little more than an overgrown ruin, in Admiral Courbet Road, in the lower part of the hilled village.

Locals told Sud Ouest that Mr Al-Hilli had been ‘planning to create a small apartment in order to rent it.’

The paper adds: "On a number of occasions he turned up to rebuild the floor and roof, before leaving the area without returning."

Sud Ouest says the house has never been occupied, and is practically in the same state as when he left.

"It seems that the owner had put it up for sale, but the deal had not been concluded," the paper adds, displaying a picture of the house on its website.

The development came as detectives admitted they were no closer finding the killers responsible for the outrages, nor indeed the motive.

No theory has been ruled out, including the possibility that Mr Al-Hilli’s past life in Iraq, where he was born, may have involved him with sinister forces.

 Family disputes and business conflicts are also being looked at, while detectives have not ruled out the possibility that cyclist Mr Mollier may have been the intended target of a professional ‘hit’.

Claims that only one gun was used to kill everybody is likely to be disproved by full ballistics test results which are out in October.

While the 25 spent bullet cartridges found at the scene are all of the same kind, they could in fact have come from a number of weapons of the same make.

This throws up the possibility of a well-equipped, highly-trained gang circling the car and then opening fire.

Plot Thickens in Grisly French Alps Murders
New evidence suggests that Saad Al-Hilli and his family were killed over Saddam Hussein’s smuggled fortune.

October 29, 2012

Just as police investigating the shocking quadruple murder in the French Alps were honing in on a solid lead, new information has added yet another layer of intrigue and mystery to the case. The central question: who was the intended target in the grisly killings?
 ::snipping2::
On Saturday, citing German intelligence officials, the French newspaper Le Monde reported that Saad Al-Hilli's late father, Kadhim, had once served as a conduit to help smuggle Saddam Hussein’s fortune out of Iraq.

Detectives launched the investigation on the assumption that Saad Al-Hilli—the patriarch of the Iraqi-British family— was the intended target of the murder, and that his family and Mollier were collateral damage. Indeed, rumors have swirled that Saad’s father had fled Iraq with €1 million after falling out with the Baath Party, and that Saad and his brother, Kaid, were fighting over their father's estate—a narrative that seemed to fit nicely into an assassin's plot.
 ::snipping2::The Le Monde report seems to argue that the money the Al-Hilli sons were allegedly squabbling over was actually Saddam Hussein’s and not their father’s. Saad Al-Hilli gained access to a Swiss bank account after his father died last year in Spain, and investigators wonder if he may have been gunned down upon his return from Geneva, just an hour’s drive from where the murders took place. According to the Le Monde report, the Al-Hillis could have other accounts in France and Switzerland, which were used to hide the late Iraqi dictator’s money. German authorities have provided their French and British counterparts with the links between the Al-Hilli family and Saddam Hussein’s fortune.

This new information threw a wrench in the investigation as last week an analysis of blood droplets on the soles of the victims' feet seemed to indicate that Mollier was shot first outside the car in the presence of Saad Al-Hilli and young Zainab. The elder Al-Hilli then presumably scrambled into the car and locked the doors, throwing the vehicle into a frenzied reverse and getting stuck in a muddy bank, before the assassin shot him and his wife and mother-in-law through the closed window.

Brother gets bail in Alpine killing of couple that left 2 child survivors
June 25, 2013

LONDON –  British police say a man who was arrested in connection with the murder of his brother and three others in the French Alps is out on bail after being arrested and questioned.

Surrey Police say the 54-year-old man was released on bail on Tuesday, a day after he was arrested near London on suspicion of conspiracy to murder. British police rarely name suspects until they are charged, but the prosecutor in the French town of Annecy has identified him as Zaid al-Hilli.

The French prosecutor, Eric Maillaud, has cited evidence that the siblings were fighting over their father's inheritance.
