Drew Peterson's murder conviction is upheld; prosecutor calls it 'vindication'
November 13, 2015

Drew Peterson's conviction and prison sentence for the murder of his third wife, Kathleen Savio, were affirmed by the Illinois Appellate Court, which said the circumstantial evidence against him proved he had the motive and the opportunity to commit the crime.

The court, in an 87-page ruling, said the evidence against the retired police sergeant was "sufficient" to show he killed Savio, who was found dead in the bathtub of her Bolingbrook home in 2004. The medical evidence, the court wrote, made clear that Savio had been murdered, while "the remaining circumstantial evidence and the reasonable inferences therefrom" proved that Peterson was her killer.

The court also upheld Peterson's 38-year sentence, which means he will not be paroled until May 2047, when he would be 93.

Drew Peterson appeals murder conviction to state Supreme Court
January 19, 2016, 6:47 PM

Two months after state appellate justices rejected his appeal, Drew Peterson is asking Illinois' highest court to toss out his conviction for the notorious murder of his third wife.

Lawyers for the imprisoned former Bolingbrook police sergeant filed the lengthy appeal Tuesday to the Illinois Supreme Court. Peterson argues he was denied a fair trial due to the use of so-called hearsay statements, as well as other alleged critical errors, during court proceedings in Will County.

Brodsky, who no longer represents Peterson, told the Tribune the high court appeal "has no chance."

"The (appellate court) opinion clearly shows that the case against Drew Peterson was not just based on hearsay, but was in fact a circumstantial case which was expertly tried by the prosecution and the defense," he said. "The appellate court found that the trial was error free, which is very rare."

As his appeal continues, Peterson is also accused of trying to hire someone to kill Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow, who successfully prosecuted Peterson in Savio's death. Glasgow also has named Peterson as the sole suspect in Stacy Peterson's still-unsolved disappearance. She was 23 at the time of her disappearance; her 32nd birthday is Wednesday.

Peterson, 62, has denied involvement.

He is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 8 for the alleged murder-for-hire plot in Randolph County, which is home to Menard Correctional Center, where Peterson has been held since he was sentenced more than two years ago. His trial is expected this year.

Illinois Supreme Court to hear Drew Peterson appeal on '12 murder conviction
March 30, 2016, 7:11 PM

Illinois' highest court agreed Wednesday to hear an appeal in the case of Drew Peterson, who is asking the court to toss out his 2012 conviction in the notorious murder of his third wife.

The Illinois Supreme Court agreed to hear the appeal Wednesday, said Bethany Krajelis, the court’s spokeswoman.

"It means that maybe someone's finally gonna listen," said Steven Greenberg, an attorney for Peterson. "I don't think they would say, 'We're gonna hear the case,' if they didn't think there was a problem. Clearly, they think there was some problem."

The Third District Appellate Court in Ottawa, in an unanimous Nov. 12 opinion, upheld the 38-year prison term and declared it found no trial errors and that evidence against Peterson was "sufficient" to show he killed Savio, 40, in 2004.

Drew Peterson set to return to court for murder-for-hire trial

Chicago Tribune
By Matthew Walberg

CHICAGO — Nearly four years ago, Drew Peterson watched as potential jurors in a Joliet courtroom answered questions about their fitness to determine whether Peterson was guilty of killing his third wife.

Since then, Peterson has waged war on two fronts — the first to have his murder conviction tossed, and the second, authorities allege, to exact revenge on the prosecutor who led the effort to put him behind bars.

On Friday, jurors will again file into a courtroom, this time in the tiny Randolph County Courthouse in Chester where Peterson is to stand trial on charges he attempted to find a hit man to kill Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow.

Drew Peterson found guilty in murder-for-hire plot

Published May 31, 2016

CHESTER, Ill. –  Jurors have found former suburban Chicago police officer Drew Peterson guilty of trying to hire someone to kill the prosecutor who helped convict him in his third wife's death.

Jurors reached the verdict Tuesday afternoon after deliberating for little more than an hour.

Peterson was accused of trying to hire a fellow inmate's uncle to kill Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow. Peterson is serving a 38-year sentence in ex-wife Kathleen Savio's death and faces up to 60 more years in prison.

Bolingbrook Ends Drew Peterson’s Police Pension

A day after Drew Peterson was convicted of trying to take out a hit on the prosecutor who led Peterson’s prosecution for murder, the former crooked cop finally lost his pension.

The Bolingbrook Police Pension Board on Wednesday voted unanimously to pull Peterson’s $79,000-per-year pension, a decision that came nearly four years after Peterson was convicted of murdering his third wife, Kathleen Savio, and the village first moved to cut off his payouts, board attorney Richard Reimer told the Chicago Sun-Times.

Glad to see this happen.  If I remember correctly, the basis the Pension Board could use in pulling Peterson's pension was that he used his police training/knowledge/expertise/connections etc. during the commission or cover up of a crime.

Jailhouse recordings in Drew Peterson murder-for-hire case released
Tuesday, June 07, 2016 06:51PM

Hours of jailhouse and courtroom recordings in Drew Peterson's murder-for-hire case were released Tuesday and reveal Drew Peterson talking about everything from murder to birthday cards from female admirers.

Peterson was convicted May 31 of plotting the murder of Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow.

The newly released recordings reveal several sides of Drew Peterson.

In a 2013 recording, just before Peterson was sentenced for murdering his third wife Kathleen Savio, there was an outburst in open court:

Judge: Say whatever you choose.
Drew Peterson: I've been forced to stay silent since the beginning of all this. I did not kill Kathleen!
Victim's sister: Yes you did!
Judge: There won't be any comments from the audience.
Victim's sister: Liar.
Judge: Ma'am. Ma'am. I'd like you to leave the courtroom.

While Savio's sister was ejected from the courtroom, their family took comfort in knowing Peterson was headed to prison for 36 years.

Ex-Illinois policeman sentenced to 40 years in murder-for-hire -report

Drew Peterson, a former Chicago-area police officer who is in prison for murdering his wife, was sentenced on Friday to an additional 40 years for trying to hire someone to kill the prosecutor who convicted him, Illinois' attorney general said.

Peterson, 62, is serving a 38-year sentence for the 2004 murder of Kathleen Savio, his third wife, a case that was made into a television movie starring Rob Lowe.

In May he was found guilty of solicitation of murder and solicitation of murder for hire when a jury agreed he had plotted in 2014 to find someone to kill James Glasgow, the Will County state's attorney who prosecuted him in the case of his wife's murder.

Randolph County Judge Richard Brown handed down the sentence on Friday against Peterson, who faced up to 70 years for the two solicitation crimes.

Illinois Supreme Court hears Drew Peterson appeal
Tuesday, November 15, 2016 05:44PM

CHICAGO (WLS) --
The Illinois Supreme Court heard arguments Tuesday on Drew Peterson's appeal of his conviction for the death of his third wife Kathleen Savio.

Peterson, whose fourth wife Stacy is presumed dead, but whose body was never found, was convicted of Savio's murder in large measure thanks to incriminating statements Stacy made before her disappearance. Though generally inadmissible, a 2010 hearsay law known as Drew's Law, allows witnesses to essentially speak from beyond the grave.

"We don't want it to be just an exception for Drew Peterson. We want to make sure all defendants are treated fairly. And in this case, the state bent over backwards to say that Drew Peterson was not entitled to the same kind of protections that other criminal defendants should expect and are entitled to," said Harold Krent, defense attorney.

There is no timeline for the Illinois Supreme Court to render a decision. Peterson's defense attorneys said they're hopeful to have an answer by next spring.

Drew Peterson Transferred To Federal Prison In Terre Haute
February 21, 2017 1:28 PM

CHICAGO (CBS) — Convicted killer Drew Peterson, serving a total of 78 years in prison, was transferred out of state custody on Tuesday to a federal prison in Terre Haute, Ind.

“Drew Peterson (Reg. No. 07018-748) is in the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons at the United States Penitentiary in Terre Haute,” said Jill Tyson, spokeswoman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

The reason for the move from state to federal custody has not been released.

But CBS 2 Legal Analyst Irv Miller said there are several possible reasons.

“His own security, they can’t protect him. Two, he’s a witness on a federal case that we don’t know about. Or three, he’s been indicted himself,” Miller said.

“Drew Peterson has been transferred out of IDOC custody. For safety and security purposes, the IDOC does not discuss details concerning the placement of offenders who are transferred under the terms of the Interstate Compact Agreement,” Illinois Department of Corrections spokeswoman Nicole Wilson said in an email.

WBBM Newsradio’s Steve Miller has been told Peterson was transferred to federal custody, but it’s not yet clear why.

Attorney: Drew Peterson ‘Probably Better Off’ In Federal Prison
February 22, 2017 11:06 AM

CHICAGO (CBS) — The reason for convicted wife killer Drew Peterson’s transfer from an Illinois prison to a federal facility in Indiana remained a mystery on Wednesday, but his attorney said whatever the basis might be, the former Bolingbrook police officer is “probably better off.”

Peterson, 63, recently was moved from the Menard Correctional Center in southern Illinois to the Stateville Northern Reception and Classification Center, which is used for processing prisoner transfers in Illinois. On Tuesday, he was transferred from state custody to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, and taken to FCI Terre Haute, a medium-security prison in Indiana.

Peterson’s attorney, Steve Greenberg, said he was in the dark about the move until he saw news reports Tuesday afternoon.

“As a lawyer, we don’t want to say we’re clueless. I have no idea why they moved him,” Greenberg said. “Never have seen this before in my 30 years of doing this. Never.”

He said the move from a 140-year-old state facility with non-air-conditioned cells to federal prison in Indiana is actually a step up.

“For Drew, he’s probably better off in a federal facility,” he said.

Drew Peterson moved to high security due to 'high maintenance'
Thursday, February 23, 2017

TERRE HAUTE, Ind., (WLS) -- On Tuesday, former Bolingbrook police sergeant, Drew Peterson, was suddenly moved from the Illinois Department of Corrections to a federal prison in Indiana.

ABC 7 I-Team sources with knowledge of the situation said the simple reason Peterson was moved was high maintenance, not high security. A lot of prisoners receive similar transfer treatment for various reasons but few are as recognizable and in need of regular management as Peterson.

By any measure 63-year-old Peterson has been a high maintenance prisoner from his made-for-television criminal "celebrity" status, to his in-your-face wise-cracks with media and correctional officers to his outrageous murder-for-hire plot against the Will County prosecutor that was hatched while behind bars at Menard.

I think that the appeal ruling might come soon.  The defense attorney was expecting a ruling in spring.
In my opinion, DP still thinks that he is "untouchable."
