State Deemed Peterson ‘Threat To Safety And Security’ Before Transfer
March 9, 2017 1:13 PM

In February, Peterson was transferred from the Menard Correctional Center to a high-security federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana.

At the time, state and federal prison officials declined to explain the reason for the move, but memos obtained from the Illinois Department of Corrections revealed state prison officials sought to move him because they saw him as a “threat to safety and security of the department.”

IDOC acting manager Doug Stephens wrote a letter to IDOC acting director John Bladwin, informing him of the plan to transfer Peterson to federal custody.

Illinois is seeking placement via the Interstate Corrections Compact Agreement due to his former position as well as his conviction of Solicitation/Murder/For Hire of the Will County State’s Attorney. With his placement outside of Illinois Department of Corrections, it is imperative this offender be continually monitored through his mail as well as telephone conversations due to his former actions,” Stephens wrote.

Drew Peterson attacked by prison inmate with food tray
April 11, 2017, 5:21 PM

One month after his transfer to a federal Indiana prison for security reasons, Drew Peterson was attacked by a fellow inmate armed with a food tray in the dining area, a source confirmed Tuesday.

Peterson, a former Bolingbrook police sergeant, was "jumped" March 29 in the chow hall of the maximum-security facility in Terre Haute, the source said. The convicted murderer was not seriously injured, the source said, and he has remained housed in a segregated unit away from the prison's general population since the incident.

Drew Peterson Attacked With Food Tray In eBay Scheme: Report
Another inmate allegedly wanted to sell the disgraced former Bolingbrook cop's belongings online.
April 11, 2017 7:52 pm ET

A source at the federal prison told WBBM Peterson was attacked with a food tray but not badly hurt, and was transferred to another area of the prison. The motive for the attack was apparently financial: The inmate wanted access to Peterson's personal items so he could ship them to family to be sold on eBay, the source said.

Illinois Supreme Court again upholds conviction of Drew Peterson for murder of his third wife
January 19, 2018, 11:30 AM

Drew Peterson’s options for getting a new trial for the 2004 murder of his third wife, Kathleen Savio, have grown thinner after the Illinois Supreme Court on Friday declined to rehear his appeal.

In denying his petition for rehearing, the court reissued the opinion it put forth in September upholding Peterson’s conviction. In the 40-page opinion, the court unanimously rejected all of the former Bolingbrook police sergeant’s arguments -- including that the trial court should not have allowed witnesses to testify about what his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, told them about her husband’s involvement in Savio’s death shortly before Stacy Peterson disappeared in October 2007.

The court also rejected arguments that his flamboyant team of attorneys failed to give him effective legal representation when his lawyers allowed a divorce attorney to testify that Stacy Peterson asked him if she could use her knowledge of the defendant’s role in Savio’s death as leverage in divorce proceedings.

Convicted Killer Drew Peterson Files U.S. Supreme Court Appeal
Drew Peterson was sentenced in 2013 for killing his third wife, Kathleen Savio.
By John Ferak, Patch Staff  | Jun 19, 2018 10:09 am ET | Updated Jun 19, 2018 10:44 am ET

This week, without nothing left to lose, Peterson's lawyer has filed a 38-page appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court attempting to overturn the murder conviction for killing Savio, whose death was made to look like an accident. The Chicago Tribune reported that Peterson's attorney Steve Greenberg alleges that the use of hearsay testimony plus statements from his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, that she made before her disappearance — should never have been allowed at the trial.

Greenburg also questioned the trial court's decision to let divorce attorney Harry Smith testify about a call in which Stacy Peterson said Drew Peterson had killed Savio.

At any rate, if the Peterson's lawyer's petition is successful, the next step in the legal process would be for the U.S. Supreme Court to allow for briefings and oral arguments on the issues raised in Peterson's filing.

These days, Peterson is 64.

Meanwhile, Stacy Peterson's sister announced on Facebook in March that Glasgow was about to file murder charges against Drew for the 2007 disappearance and murder of Stacy, whose body has never been found. However, no murder charges have been filed and nothing appears imminent.

I am glad I no longer live in Illinois where my taxes would be going to pay for these ludicrous appeals.

U.S. Supreme Court declines to hear appeal of ex-Bolingbrook cop Drew Peterson's murder conviction in death of 3rd wife
October 1, 2018, 11:15 AM

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear an appeal from former Bolingbrook police officer Drew Peterson that sought to undo his murder conviction in the death of his third wife.

The Illinois Supreme Court twice rejected Peterson's request for a new trial after he was convicted of murdering Kathleen Savio, whose death was re-examined after Peterson’s fourth wife, Stacy, went missing in 2007.

Drew Peterson blames lead trial lawyer for conviction
Published 1 day ago

CHICAGO - A former suburban Chicago police sergeant wants a federal court to toss his 2012 conviction for killing his third wife, Kathleen Savio, based on the alleged ineffectiveness of his lead trial attorney.

Drew Peterson's appellate attorney, Steve Greenberg, made the request Sunday with Chicago's U.S. District Court. He highlights the trial lawyer's decision to call a witness who proceeded to testify that Peterson's fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, told him Peterson had killed Savio.

Greenberg said the trial lawyer's decision to call such a damaging witness was "on the Mount Rushmore of boneheaded moves."

Drew Peterson to Ask Judge to Toss Out Murder Conviction
Peterson, from the Chicago suburb of Bolingbrook, is serving a 38-year prison sentence in the 2004 killing of Kathleen Savio
Published January 2, 2022 • Updated on January 2, 2022 at 7:46 pm

Drew Peterson, the former Chicago-area police sergeant who was convicted in 2012 of killing his third wife, is set to return to court this month after a judge agreed to hear his motion to vacate the verdict.

Will County Judge Edward Burmilla scheduled the Jan. 21 hearing after finding a “gist of a constitutional” claim in Peterson's six-page handwritten motion, according to the Chicago Tribune. Burmilla assigned Peterson a public defender and two investigators from the public defender's office.

Peterson, from the Chicago suburb of Bolingbrook, is serving a 38-year prison sentence in the 2004 killing of Kathleen Savio. He will follow thatsentence with 40 more years after he was convicted in 2016 of plotting to kill the prosecutor who put him behind bars.

Hearing delayed on ex-cop’s bid to toss murder conviction
A judge has delayed for three months a hearing on former suburban Chicago police officer Drew Peterson’s request to toss out his murder conviction in the killing of his third wife

JOLIET, Ill. -- A judge on Monday delayed for three months a hearing on former suburban Chicago police officer Drew Peterson’s request to toss out his murder conviction in the killing of his third wife after his attorney said he needed more time.

Will County Judge Edward Burmila set the next hearing date for May 18.

During a brief hearing, Assistant Public Defender Jason Strzelcki told the judge he needed time to interview witnesses, several of whom live outside Illinois. He also said he planned to amend the petition that Peterson filed himself last year.

“We will be adding several claims,” said Strzelcki, who did not detail what those might be.

Law enforcement labeled Peterson as the only suspect in the death of Stacy Peterson.

JOLIET, Ill. — Convicted wife killer Drew Peterson has an unlikely ally in his efforts to keep his former attorney from sharing the ex-cop’s secrets.

The man who prosecuted Peterson — the same man who Peterson was later convicted of attempting to hire a hit man to kill — Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow has filed a brief supporting a gag order against Peterson’s ex-lawyer.

“The parties and trial court in this case could not risk [Joel Brodsky] revealing whatever knowledge he possesses,” Glasgow’s office wrote in a filing with an appellate court reviewing the gag order.
