ST. LOUIS (AP) — With a string of gold albums, a hit TV series and the signature "Moon River," Andy Williams was a voice of the 1960s, although not the '60s we usually hear about.

The singer known for his easy-listening style and his wholesome, middle-America appeal was the antithesis of the counterculture that gave rise to rock and roll.

"The old cliche says that if you can remember the 1960s, you weren't there," he once recalled. "Well, I was there all right, but my memory of them is blurred — not by any drugs I took but by the relentless pace of the schedule I set myself."
 ::snipping2::

The 84-year-old entertainer died Tuesday night at his Branson home following a yearlong battle with the disease, his Los Angeles-based publicist, Paul Shefrin, said Wednesday.

Williams became a major star in 1956, the same year as Elvis Presley, with the Sinatra-like swing number "Canadian Sunset." For a time, he was pushed into such Presley imitations as "Lips of Wine" and the No. 1 smash "Butterfly."

But he mostly stuck to what he called his "natural style" and kept it up throughout his career. In 1970, when even Sinatra had temporarily retired, Williams was in the top 10 with the theme from "Love Story," the Oscar-winning tearjerker. He had 18 gold records and three platinum, was nominated for five Grammy awards and hosted the Grammy ceremonies for several years.

Movie songs became a specialty, including his signature "Moon River." The longing Johnny Mercer-Henry Mancini ballad was his most famous song, even though he never released it as a single because his record company feared such lines as "my huckleberry friend" were too confusing and old-fashioned for teens.

Andy Williams' death brings up memories of holiday specials

Actor Andy Williams and his wife, actress Claudine Longet, join their three-month-old daughter, Noelle Christine, for her first picture in Hollywood on Dec. 27, 1963. The baby, the Williams' first, made her TV debut on Williams' show on Dec. 31.

I remember those Christmas Specials!  I also remember how uncomfortable and painful it was to watch the family (together, but separated) on a TV Christmas Special, towards the end of the marriage. Sad

Good Evening Monkey's,

Muffy,

I am wondering why her Diary was not allowed in as evidence?  I have no Diary link, sorry.

Thirty day sentence:

Marriage to Andy William

Longet and Williams met in Las Vegas in 1960 when she was 18 and he was 32. Longet was experiencing problems with her car and had pulled over to the side of the road. Driving by, Williams stopped to offer assistance. She was the lead dancer of the Folies Bergère revue at the Tropicana Resort & Casino. They married on 15 December 1961 in Los Angeles,[4] and had three children: Noëlle (born on 24 September 1963), Christian (born on 15 April 1965), and Robert ("Bobby") (born on 1 August 1969). They legally separated in 1970 and divorced in January 1975. According to Williams, they remained "very good friends".

This article says the district court judge noticed an affidavit filed by the sheriff for a search warrant hadn't been signed by a judge.  It says the affidavit was important because it was needed to get a warrant to search Spider's home the day he was shot. Among the items seized in the search was Claudine's diary.

Toward the bottom of the article it says the diary, along with blood and urine tests administered to Claudine are the objects of the evidence suppression hearing.

Thank-you, Muffy.

The warrant was not signed by the Judge?   ::MonkeyEek:  The case may have been lost because the blood and urine samples, and THE Diary.

She was very convincing on the stand.  I believe she is an actress and a pretty good one in court,IMO.  I think she was able to serve the thirty days, whenever she wished, within a
limited time frame. She served her sentence on weekends, if my memory serves me correctly. We growl because a case takes too long, it is better to wait, than to have it fudged it. Sad

Showbiz Andy Williams dead at 84: ‘Moon River’ crooner loses battle with bladder cancer

Williams came across for six decades on concert stages and television shows as the ultimate Mr. Nice Guy, as well known for his warm, genial personal style as for his music.

Death

 ::snipping2::

The Pitkin County Sheriff's, who made the arrest, made two procedural errors that aided Longet's defense: without warrants, they took a blood sample from her and confiscated her diary. According to prosecutors, the sample showed the presence of (snip) in her blood, and her diary reportedly contradicted her claim that her relationship with Sabich had not soured. In addition, the gun was mishandled by non-weapons experts. As they were unable to cite any of the disallowed material, prosecutors did use the autopsy report to suggest that when Sabich was struck, he was bent over, facing away, and at least 1.80 m (6 feet) from Longet, which would be inconsistent with the position and relative distance of someone demonstrating the operation of a firearm.

Watching this, still brings tears to my eyes.  It is extremely moving and crosses party boundries.

I remember reading that AW continued to support Claudine throughout the trial.  Many in their "circles" believed justice was not served in Spider's case.

Flutter,

AW felt guilt, more than love, IMO. He met her, when she was a mere Eighteen-years-old.
He toured and left her home with three babies. Perhaps,he bore the responsibilty for the divorce.

CL and Spider had a 'ringy ding ding' going on for four years, 72-76 ?  That is news to me.

The children, so young, to go through so much misery.

You may be right about Williams' sticking by CL because of guilt.  I guess I never realized the vast age gap, and I am sure that he was no saint.

I miss Dominick Dunne's series.  I have found him a magnificent story-teller since I read  The Two Mrs. Grenville's many years ago when I really read a lot of true crime.
