I have been following this one, but not posting much.
We are living in a world that I do not understand anymore.
How can we keep any children safe ?
Never let them out of the house ?
Have a GPS implant in our kids with software that can track their every move, check it constantly and if they veer off their expected preplanned path, have a call placed to  911 automatically ?
....
My daughter grew up before we had cell phones and the schools did not make calls to the parents if anyone didn't show up for school ( they should have ). When I was growing up, we were sent out the door to school or whatever and the assumption was that we made it to our destinations and weren't kidnapped along the way
......
I blame the society and culture that we live in ..... a 15 year old child can acquire a porn addiction ? A 15 year old child should not have been able to acquire porn.
Right now, I don't have an opinion on the Sigg family or what they should have or could have done. Don't know if they were paying any attention to him or even noticed how disturbed he was. Could anyone have predicted that this Austin would do this ? Who would want to think that their son could escalate ito this ?

So well put Kat Gram, we must have grown up in the same era.  I think the only "bad" that happened in my young years was physical abuse by a parent and that would make the headlines.

What as a society can we do?  Courts are too liberal, seems the judges just don't get it!  Sentencing & paroling them early is a laugh.  Should there be a Federal law enacted that would take them out of the states hands and make them all fall under a Federal standard?  No pity for a bad childhood, mental incompetency, etc.?  Because its for sure none of the current punishments are long or harsh enough.

Feeling the Wind

The Loss of a Child is an Unbearible Pain that Also Effects the Community that Surrounds the Family. My Sincerest Sorrow Over the Loss of Jessica Ridgeway

Susan Brown, Yahoo! Contributor Network

Nov 2, 2012

The wind blew and the sun shone, as I drove down the winding road to say goodbye, to say I am sorry and to see where death and evil had come to our town. It was October 16, 2012, the day that our town in Colorado would memorialize a young life that was stolen from us all. Jessica Ridgeway was kidnapped and murdered 5 minutes from where I live. October 16th also happened to be my wedding anniversary, and in the 19 years that I had been married, I have seen a lot to grieve over. I have seen and dealt with death, evil and have tried not to be surprised at what we are capable of as people, but this seemed different. I lived a few minutes from Columbine High School when tragedy and death engulfed that community. I sat with those parents and listened to the teenagers try to understand what they had lived through. I have stood at the graveside of the funerals of children lost to abuse and neglect. I have held the hands of mourners whose loved ones were struck down by violence, but this was different. It was different because my daughter was 10, the memorial was being held at the church I attend and on the street where my kids go to school. It was different because I felt that all the "degrees of separation" were gone. There is a person hunting in my community and my children are part of their prey.

Editorial: A spotlight on changes to Colorado juvenile justice
Posted:   11/04/2012 12:01:00 AM MDT

 ::snipping2::
The Ridgeway murder serves as a reminder of the kind of case in which charging as an adult is the appropriate call. Granted, we don't know all the accusations yet, but thus far it seems as though a suspect near the age of majority has been accused of a premeditated crime. We aren't talking about a 14-year-old who shot someone during an argument.

Indeed, last week Sigg was charged as an adult. His lawyers will ask for what is called a reverse transfer hearing to ask a judge to direct the matter to juvenile court. The recent law change gives juveniles the right to request such a hearing.

Prosecutors have said this process can take a week of court time. A pertinent question is whether it is an effective additional layer of process.

In the ensuing years, it will be important to note whether the number of direct file cases have decreased. How many times did judges overrule prosecutors? Did those kicked back to the juvenile system end up with lower recidivism rates?

None of that will bring back Jessica, but it can and should serve as a test of whether the public interest is better served by a system that curtails prosecutorial discretion in charging juveniles who commit heinous crimes.

I don't think this one will go back to juvie.  I might be wrong, but considering the perp's age and the details of the crime, I don't see this case being one of those that might be considered as the act of an immature mind.

I agree. I think the defense feels it has to try to keep it in Juvie.

Not gonna stick, in my opinion.

Unabomber's brother says he understands anguish
Updated 2:29 p.m., Monday, November 5, 2012

DENVER (AP) — The brother of the convicted Unabomber says he understands the anguish of a murder suspect's mother who turned in her own son.
 ::snipping2::
"It would be really important for people to remember that this mother who turned in her son most likely is horrified by what he did but still loves him because she is his mother," he said. "The first thing I would say to her is, 'This is not your fault.' "

In 1996, David Kaczynski was reading through his brother's writings and began to realize they had the same tone and content as the manifesto penned by the infamous domestic terrorist.

"It was like seeing a nightmare that becomes real," Kaczynski said. "What's going to happen to my brother? What's going to happen to mom? What's going to happen to our family? You ask yourself questions. Is there any horizon beyond this? Is there any life left? Or any happiness? Will we have to change our names or our identities to be related to such a serious offender?"

After his brother was convicted, David Kaczynski and his mother, Wanda, met with victims. A widow of one of the victims looked at Wanda and said, "You don't deserve any of this. It's not your fault. We don't blame you."

David Kaczynski said he hasn't heard from his 70-year-old brother since he entered prison. He writes him but has never received a letter back. Their mother died last year.

David Kaczynski became the executive director of New Yorkers for Alternatives to the Death Penalty and started a program called Limits of Loyalty, which introduces young people to the notion of responsibility for dealing with violent activities.

You're welcome, Terri.  David realized that if he didn't do anything other people would die. Thank goodness that he had the courage to turn in his brother--a very difficult thing to do in my opinion.

Ridgway family orders foundation stop using Jessica’s name
Posted on: 5:06 pm, November 7, 2012, by Web Staff, updated on: 05:49pm, November 7, 2012

WESTMINSTER, Colo. — The family of slain Westminster 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway has demanded a Colorado foundation stop using her name and likeness for a fundraiser scheduled for this weekend.

A lawyer for the Ridgeway family sent a cease and desist letter to the Colorado’s Missing Children Foundation Wednesday.

According to the letter, Jessica’s name is used repeatedly by the foundation both on their website and on a Facebook event for a fundraiser called the Purple Ribbon Tattoo Event scheduled for Saturday.

“Your organization has ‘Remember Jessica’ prominently displayed on the advertisements for this Purple Ribbon Tattoo Event fundraiser and you are selling ‘Justice for Jessica’ bracelets, and ‘Jessica Ridgeway’ window decals for purchase,” the letter said.

“The family has tried to address this issue with you informally by repeatedly asking you to stop using Jessica’s name as a fundraising tool for your organization,” it continues. “You have not respected the family’s wishes and are continuing to make money off of Jessica’s name.”

Grace-land,

I had just finished reading the article when I saw your post.   I was rather upset when the "foundation" alluded that the family only became upset when they stopped giving them money.   I would think anyone feeling for this child or their parents would not want to heap further stress or pain on them.  The "foundation" lost all my respect with that one comment.

This "foundation" was created after Jessica went missing.  Anyone can say they are a foundation and ask for donations.  They had no right to use Jessica's name and they aren't a real foundation.

Agree.  In my opinion, no group/foundation should plan an event/fundraiser using the name/image of a victim without the expressed permission and cooperation of the victim's family.

Ridgeway family orders foundation to stop using Jessica’s name
Posted on: 5:06 pm, November 7, 2012, by Web Staff, updated on: 10:19am, November 8, 2012

Wednesday, only FOX31 Denver cameras were there when the Ridgeway family served the foundation with a cease and desist letter.

The foundation allowed FOX31 Denver reporter Justin Joseph to listen to a voice mail from Jessica Ridgeway’s aunt which it says shows the foundation had a good relationship with the Ridgeway family.

“Hi, this is Rebecca Ridgeway. I’m sorry for (the disagreement). I believe you’ve helped raise awareness for the world and I’m truly grateful for that.”

When Fox 31 Denver reached Ridgeway, she felt differently.

”They’re liars,” Ridgeway said. “Tell the public this is not about the money. This is about the fact Jessica’s name and image is not theirs to use.”

The foundation says it will comply after the next event which is scheduled this weekend.

The Saturday fundraiser, scheduled to happen at the Springhill Suites hotel in Westminster, is asking for a $20 donation for a tattoo or $5 for a temporary tattoo. The event will also sell T-shirts, decals and bracelets, according to a flyer advertising the event.

The foundation’s website has numerous photos of Ridgeway and flyers for the Light Up the Night for Jessica event that took place the week she went missing.

The foundation members claim they filed paperwork with the Secretary of State on Friday. The paperwork had not appeared on the Secretary of State’s website as of Wednesday.

unless they are trying to profit personally, i dont get why they would be so upset. If they are a legit foundation, which i have no idea, i would think they would want to support efforts for missing and murdered children.

On the morning of October 5th ... Sarah Ridgeway and "Jeremy's father" failed big time in regards to an unaccompanied little girl named Jessica ... failed big time when they did not consider the evil that lurked ... the evil the would place a little girl at risk ... the evil that had been forewarned by the September letter to parents from the Jefferson County School District.

Then there was the unfathomable act by Sarah Ridgeway of turning off her cell phone ... turning off her only link for the next 7 1/2 hours to her precious daughter who she had just watched walk through the door ... walk through that door alone.

A licensed caregiver of children would have been sued by parents and prosecuted by the state for the same actions of Sarah Ridgeway but ... this mother is afforded a legal pass ... referred to as strong. Why?

Justice for Jessica Ridgeway is far reaching.  The scales of justice will not balanced if only Austin Sigg is held legally accountable.  Others were negligent participants in the the chain of events that paved the way that ended in the kidnap, rape and murder of a little girl. Imagine the h--- this vulnerable child was forced to endure.

My main focus is justice for Jessica.  The evil that took the life of this treasure beyond worth  must never be allowed to experience freedom.  However ... another focus is also future "Jessicas" who are placed at risk by the choices of those entrusted with their care.

A Warning Letter to Parents

Police Not Ruling Out Possible Connection To Attempted Abduction Suspect
October 11, 2012 8:15 PM

Police in Arvada have been investigating two cases of attempted abduction since Sept. 9. Now police in Westminster are taking a closer look at the case to see if there is a connection to Jessica’s disappearance.

On that day a child was approached by a stranger near Quaker Acres Park in Arvada near Warder Elementary School. The stranger allegedly offered candy and asked the child to come to his car.

Three days later another child was approached by a similar stranger offering candy at Fitzmorris Elementary School. ...

On Sept. 14 Jefferson County School District sent a letter to parents warning them of the situation with the attempted abductions.

I receive the following unexpected email this morning.  I can only assume that it was in response to an email I sent to Westminster Police Department on November 2nd.  The gist of my correspondence on that date reflected the above post.

Janet,  It appears that you have quite a bit of passion about this incident and protecting our children.  You and many others have asked a lot of questions and looked for answers that are not out there, not available yet, or don’t resolve the conflict that you are struggling to understand.  In law enforcement we always say that an incident or event can not be looked at or judged with hindsight.  That age old hindsight is 20/20 analogy applies in many criminal incidents and we must recognize and remember the details we learn after the fact should not be considered in regard to how we should have responded before we learned of them.  With that being said, we can learn from our past though, and I believe there is a distinct difference between the two.

There are many good people in our community, state and country that are working to identify future changes that could be made, programs that may help protect our children and how to reduce the risk to future generations.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend,

Investigator Trevor Materasso
