First witnesses against Jessica Ridgeway's suspected killer Austin Sigg testifies
10:35 AM, Feb 22, 2013

DENVER - The preliminary hearing for the teen suspect accused of killing a 10-year-old Westminster girl and attacking a jogger in May began Friday morning.

Prosecution calls their first witness

The first witness for the prosecution took the stand on Friday to testify against Austin Sigg, 17. Westminster Police's Louis Lopez is the lead detective on the case against Sigg.

During his testimony, he outlined the Jessica Ridgeway case.

He said Jessica usually walked to school with her classmate Jeremy. That day, Jessica called Jeremy's dad to make sure he was walking to school that day due to some bad weather. Jeremy's dad said Jeremy was going to walk to school that day. Jessica never showed up to walk with him.

Evidence starts to roll in.

On Oct. 7, Lopez says they found the backpack connected to Jessica. Inside the backpack, they found boots, prescription glasses, jeans, winter gloves, a tie-dyed T-shirt, a water bottle and Jessica's underwear. According to Lopez, police found "touch DNA" inside her underwear. That DNA matched a sample taken from the Kepner Lake incident where a jogger was attacked and the suspect was never found.

Lopez also recalled the day Jessica's body was discovered. Workers picking up trash found the torso of a small, white girl. There were no arms, no legs and no head attached to the torso. DNA found on Jessica's torso was compared to the DNA found on the water bottle from the backpack. It was a match.

Tipsters start calling police

On Oct. 19, investigators received a tip from a neighbor saying she was the neighbor of Sigg. The tipster said she saw the photo of the cross released by police as possibly connected to the case. The tipster claimed she saw Sigg wearing crosses often and that he was "obsessed with death." Later that day, the FBI went to Sigg's house to collect DNA evidence. On Oct. 21, another DNA sample was taken.

On Oct. 23, Lopez said Sigg's mother Mindy called a tipline at 7:30 p.m. Mindy reportedly said Austin admitted to killing Ridgeway and attacking the Kepner Lake jogger. During the preliminary hearing, the prosecution plans to play a portion of the 911 call when Mindy reported Austin.

Police went to Sigg's home to investigate. They found remains in the crawl space of the house. The cause of death according to the coroner was asphyxiation.

Lopez pointed out the Siggs and the Ridgeways did not know each other.

Upcoming court procedings during the preliminary hearing

Prosecutors say they plan to call five witnesses including Lopez. The second witness will be the sexual assault examiner.

Just half-an-hour before the hearing was set to start on Monday, 9NEWS learned three additional charges of "sexual exploitation of a child" were added against the suspect. The third witness called by the prosecution this week will be a detective who will talk about the child porn they found.

The fourth witness will be a detective who interviewed Sigg at his home after his arrest. The last witness for the prosecution will be another detective who Mindy told about Austin's confession.

Sigg appeared in a Jefferson County courtroom at 8:30 a.m. to hear the evidence against him. Counts 12 and 13 were dismissed against Sigg on Friday. Those counts were connected to the Kepner Lake attack.

According to court documents, Sigg "unlawfully, feloniously and knowingly possessed or controlled sexually exploitative ... video, video tape or motion picture qualifying as sexually exploitative material." Lopez addressed the child porn accusations. He said detectives found a hard drive and a laptop that had pornographic photos of children on it.

Judge: Austin Sigg must face trial in death of Jessica Ridgeway

February 23, 2013 1:18 AM GMTUpdated:   02/22/2013 06:18:39 PM

GOLDEN  — Only when it was inevitable that DNA would reveal him as Jessica Ridgeway's killer did a 17-year-old confess to his mother: "I'm a monster."

It was one of numerous revelations at a preliminary hearing for Austin Sigg, 18, on Friday in which Judge Stephen Munsinger bound him over for trial on 18 of 20 counts relating to the death of 10-year-old Jessica and an attack on a jogger at Ketner Lake over Memorial Day weekend last year.

Prosecutors dismissed two additional charges.

Sigg didn't admit he kidnapped, strangled and dismembered Ridgeway until a neighbor called a tipline on Oct. 19 and gave police the lead they needed to solve the case, according to testimony at the preliminary hearing.

On that day, two FBI agents went to the Sigg home and Sigg submitted his DNA. Four days later, after he confessed, he chided authorities for taking so long to process the DNA with someone as dangerous as him running around. They should have brought in more resources, he criticized.

Westminster police Det. Albert Stutson testified that Sigg got on the phone after his mother called to report him and said, "I murdered Jessica Ridgeway. I have proof that I did it. You should send a squad car down here. I'll answer all the questions. I won't resist."

During Stutson's testimony, a tape of the phone call Sigg's mother, Mindy Sigg, made to police on Oct. 23 was played. Several members of Sigg's family who were seated behind him began sobbing while the tape was played.

"My son wants to turn himself in for the Jessica Ridgeway murder. He just confessed to killing her," Mindy Sigg is heard saying.

When the dispatcher asked her what her son had told her, Mindy Sigg replied, "That he did it and he gave me details."

The dispatcher told her she was doing the right thing and she replied, "He did it. He's turning himself in."

Then Austin took the phone and confessed.

Det. Michael Lynch later interviewed Mindy Sigg.

He testified that she said she came home from work and her son was lying on her bed and told her he needed to tell her something.

"I'm a monster," he told his mother.

He also said he had attacked the jogger. He said he used a red rag soaked in chloroform that he made using a recipe he found on the Internet.

Lynch's testimony of his interviews revealed that Austin Sigg grabbed Jessica when she was walking by his car. He put her in the back seat and tied her with zip ties around her arms and legs, then drove around for awhile.

Sigg took Jessica to his bedroom. He took her clothes off. He tried to choke her with zip ties then strangled her.

Under defense cross examination, Lynch said Sigg denied sexually assaulting and torturing Jessica.

He told his mother that he dismembered her body in the bathtub with a saw he found in the garage. He then bagged up pieces of her body and hid them in a crawl space beneath their home.

Two workers from a dump found Jessica's torso in a shiny garbage bag. One of the men opened the bag and found another bag inside. He dumped that bag on the ground. A supervisor was called, opened the bag with a pocket knife and saw the torso.

Mindy Sigg told police some of Jessica's remains were in the crawl space of her house.

An autopsy determined that the cause of death was asphyxiation secondary to suffocation or strangulation.

Anissa Jones, a sexual assault nurse examiner, testified that she examined Jessica's torso and determined there was evidence that she had been bruised, cut and sexually assaulted.

The lead police detective in the case testified that DNA evidence linked Sigg to the clothing of the jogger who was assaulted on May 28 and to the clothing and body of Jessica.

Det. Luis Lopez testified that a wooden cross was found along with Jessica's torso. DNA on the body was linked to evidence found on clothing of the jogger.

Lopez said evidence found in Jessica's backpack also pointed to Sigg. The backpack contained Jessica's prescription glasses and clothing — her tie-dye T-shirt, her pants, panties and boots with pom poms.

After authorities released photos of the wooden cross, a neighbor of Austin Sigg called police, Lopez testified. The neighbor said Sigg wore such a cross, and she said he was taking mortuary science classes and was interested in dead animal and human bodies

You're welcome, Kermit.

Maybe he will enter a guilty plea--after all, he said that he murdered Jessica and that he is a monster.

Theater shooting, Ridgeway murder suspects to be arraigned this week
9:22 PM, Mar 10, 2013

 ::snipping2::
On the other side of the metro, Tuesday in Jefferson County Court, Austin Sigg, the 17-year-old who police say admitted to killing 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway and dismembering her body, is also expected to be arraigned.

During Sigg's preliminary hearing, plenty of evidence came out in court, which said Austin Sigg confessed to the crimes. He also at one point said he planned to plead guilty.

Investigators testified during his preliminary hearing that Sigg "knew what he did was wrong and wanted to make up for it."

When Sigg said that though, it was before lawyers got involved. Whether he will follow through with those statements will be seen on Tuesday.

Even though Sigg is charged as an adult, because he's a minor, he does not qualify for the death penalty.

I miss telling Jessica to clean up her toys and pick up her clothes. I miss how she would bug me. ~ Sarah Ridgeway (Jessica's mother)

It's amazing how many "little things" about our child we can remember following child loss. Sometimes, the things that bothered us most are the things we miss the most -- the messy bedroom, the constant talking on the phone, the mess left in the kitchen, the banging of the kitchen door. What we wouldn't give to have that all back! If only we could relay this message to parents and families whose children are alive -- "Enjoy every minute with your child because life is so very fragile. You never, ever know when life is going to fall apart and take your child away." May every parent and family suffering through the loss of a child be blessed with an extra measure of peace today.

Rebecca Ridgeway Jessica would play waitress, I miss my waitress. I miss the off key singing. I miss the jumping on only the colored tiles in Wal-Mart and having to wait for her to catch up (when I see kids do this I want to cry now).

Jessica Ridgeway's Legacy
This is Jessica and her puppy Bristle (like a brush not like Sara Palin's child lol). Bristle is a dashshound/parson terrior mix. Bristle picked us when we went to the Boulder humaine society back in 2010. She would play with Jessica after school and even go to the park to run around. They loved each other so much. Now Bristle feels lost and is so full of energy and anxiety. The other day she got on Jessica's bed and was rolling around on her sheets, it was so cute and sad at the same time. At 4pm Bristle will look out the window watching for Jessica to come down the street so they can start their play date, she gets so sad when she doesn't see her. I know she misses Jessica so much. ~Rebecca Ridgeway (Jessica's Aunt)

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. - The teenager accused of kidnapping and killing 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway is expected to enter a plea in court on Tuesday afternoon.

During last month's preliminary hearing for now 18-year-old Austin Sigg, prosecutors played a 911 call where Sigg admitted to killing Ridgeway and to trying to kidnap a female jogger.

"I murdered Jessica Ridgeway, I have proof that I did," Sigg is heard saying on the recording. "I'm giving myself up completely, there will be no resistance whatsoever."

When the dispatcher asked Sigg if had a criminal history, he confessed to a second crime.

"The only other (incident) was Ketner Lake, where a woman was attacked. That was me," Sigg said.

After more than five hours of testimony, the judge concluded that there was enough evidence in both cases to put Sigg on trial for 18 counts.

If convicted, Sigg could spend years behind bars.

GOLDEN  — A judge on Tuesday agreed to delay the arraignment for Austin Sigg for a month so his attorneys can prepare his defense in the kidnapping and murder of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway last fall.

Sigg, who turned 18 while in jail, is charged with 18 counts related to Jessica's death, as well as an attack on a jogger at Ketner Lake over Memorial Day weekend last year.

Sigg appeared in an orange jail jumpsuit, clean-shaven with his hair combed. He was talking and smiling with his defense team.

Jefferson County District Court Judge Stephen Munsinger agreed to a defense request for a 30-day delay in the arraignment.

Sigg's attorneys said there are 50,000 pages of evidence, as well as 1,800 pieces of physical evidence and pictures to review before their client can enter a plea.
