DA: Suspect in Jessica Ridgeway murder, Austin Sigg, will be tried as adult

Last Updated: 4 minutes ago

WESTMINSTER, Colo. - The Jefferson County District Attorney announced on Thursday morning that he will try the suspect arrested in the abduction and murder of Jessica Ridgeway as an adult.

Austin Sigg, 17, made his first court appearance on Thursday. He appeared in a bright, light green jumpsuit. His hands and feet were both shackled.

Sigg's mother was in court. Jessica Ridgeway's mom, aunt and other family members took up an entire row in the courtroom. All were dressed in purple, Jessica's favorite color. Jessica's mother was wearing a purple ribbon in her hair.

7NEWS reporter Russell Haythorn said Sigg appeared calm through the proceedings. At one point he interrupted the judge because he said he didn't understand a portion of the advisement hearing.

The judge paused the proceedings while Sigg's attorney's gave him an explanation.

The charges were not read in court on Thursday, but the judge did tell Sigg he was being held in two separate cases. Another hearing was scheduled for next Tuesday.

The defense asked the judge to put all documents in the case under seal and issue a gag order in the case. The judge agreed to seal the documents, but did not issue a gag order.

In court, Sigg revoked the waiver of his rights.

The judge ordered Sigg be held without bond.

Judge denies Austin Sigg bond, DA to charge accused Ridgeway killer as adult
Posted on: 9:14 am, October 25, 2012

GOLDEN, Colo. — Despite arguments from the defense that their is a juvenile with no criminal record, a Jefferson County judge ruled at a Thursday hearing that Austin Sigg, the 17-year-old accused of abducting and brutally murdering 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway, will be held without bond.

As the judge issued the decision, Ridgeway’s family, who was draped in purple – Ridgeway’s favorite color — and occupying the back row of the court room, hung their heads in silence.

Sigg’s mother Mindy, who reportedly turned her son over to authorities, was accompanied by another woman and sat on the opposite side of the courtroom. Both cried during the entire 30-minute hearing.

DA: DNA of Austin Sigg, suspect in Jessica Ridgeway murder, found on backpack

Updated:   10/25/2012 09:45:57 AM MDTBy Jessica Fender and Ryan Parker

Sigg, described in arrest papers as "cooperative," is at the Mount View Youth Services Center in Lakewood, which houses juveniles charged with crimes. He is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder, felony murder and kidnapping in Jessica's case, and with criminal attempt to kidnap and murder in an attack on a jogger at Ketner Lake.

Prosecutors will ask that he be transferred to county jail.

Prosecutors said Thursday their case is bolstered by the teen's confession and by the fact his DNA matches material found on Jessica's backpack.

There was high security in the courtroom, with 14 law enforcement officers guarding the suspect. Sigg's younger brother collapsed against his mother in tears as his heavily shackled brother was led into a courtroom. Other Sigg family members were apparently turned away by the court.

Robert Sigg, father of accused killer Austin Reed Sigg: His media empire, law troublesBy  Thu., Oct. 25 2012 at 9:20 AM

After the arrest of seventeen-year-old Austin Reed Sigg for the kidnapping and killing of Jessica Ridgeway, a Westminster elementary schooler, attention naturally turned to the suspect's dad, Robert Sigg, a man whose image as the self-styled ruler of a mini-media empire contrasts with his many arrests. Details and videos below -- including a shot of a younger Austin wearing a cross similar to one found by Westminster police.

Thanks to all for the updates, you are awesome!

A few things I'm curious about:

The SUV -- From news reports upthread, it's been said that Austin was driving "his" SUV when he saw Jessica, turned around and grabbed her.  He seems rather young to be the owner of a nice SUV like that.  IMO.  So I'm wondering if that's actually his mom's vehicle, and he perhaps borrowed it from time to time.

The charges --  Have read that Colorado 'always' gives 2 charges for murder, tho I don't understand why.  What seems weird to me is the '2nd degree' charge for kidnapping.  I mean really, why not '1st degree'??  He admits to grabbing Jessica.  IMO, '2nd degree' makes it sound like he was simply an accomplice in the kidnapping.  And from what they are reporting, doesn't sound like anyone else was involved.

With little to no info about Austin's mom, my heart goes out to her, at this point.  Reserving judgement on his family til we learn more.  Have read upthread that Austin was in treatment for porn addiction.  Am wondering if he was, or had been, in treatment for anything else?  His being in treatment suggests to me that his mother was aware that he had problems to some degree and had taken steps to get him help.  That she urged him to turn himself in to police, and made the call herself, had to have been the hardest thing for a mom to do.  Yet the right thing, for sure.  IMO.

This is not good.  IMO.     What will he do when he's released in however many years?  Studies have shown this type rarely changes.

He is supposedly just a few months away from being 18.  Charged with an adult crime, IMO he ought to have the adult sentence as well.

If he studies this type of stuff, then he probably knows that he had to act prior to age 17 (in case he did get caught).  My opinion...Jessica received death ( and she was innocent)...why shouldn't he?  Her age...mental status...nothing mattered or kept her from receiving death...why does his age...or mental status matter?

It takes a lot to shock me ... this one did.

I never thought that the killer would be a 17 year old kid. However, what we are seeing is most likely the beginning of a serial killer. Thank God he was caught.

http://scaredmonkeys.com/2012/10/25/17-year-old-austin-sigg-arrested-and-confessed-to-the-murder-of-10-year-old-jessica-ridgeway/

This crime is so henious that they just need to stick a needle in his arm and do not pass go. For all those who said, he was sweet, really folks? You might want to rethink your judgement process of others.

Body parts in the crawl space of the home. Good God!!! This smacks of John Wayn Gacy.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Wayne_Gacy

Sorry, but they can't put this SOB down fast enough.

Totally agree but since they won't put the needle in at least study him to see if evil tendencies are rooted in a physiological way in the human brain... is there a physical abnormality in his gray matter, what environmental factors may trigger evil tendencies, what were his earliest memories of desire to harm others, is he nutritionally deficient in vitamins and minerals necessary for proper brain function (all B vitamins, iron, folic acid) etc...

I know some research and studies have been done but there's still so much we don't know.

Seriously, what if some forms of evil stem from poor brain function and development and we are missing the boat on that?  I do believe some people are born evil but I don't believe all evil people are born that way just like I don't believe all pedophiles are born with those proclivities, some develop that way due to environmental factors as infants and children.

Hi Wyks.

I heard yesterday on a live stream of the Sigg vehicle being towed away by LE that it is the only vehicle the Siggs own. So I took it to mean it belongs to Mindy Sigg, Austin's mother. That's all I can help you with right now.
