 ::snipping2::

Police are reviewing surveillance video.  They say it's been helpful in their investigation.

 ::snipping2::

http://www.kxl.com/10/18/12/Update-in-Gresham-Womans-Disappearance/landing.html?blockID=641075&feedID=10446

So the video has been helpful in their investigation but not useful for their investigation to release.  Anyone want to decipher what that means?

I believe that the non-release of a composite sketch or the surveilance videos (gas stations/walmart) ... an arrest is on the horizon.  IMO

I stand with the girl, Natalee Holloway.

"I can look back over the past 10 years and there were no steps wasted, and there are no regrets,'' she said. "I did all I knew to do and I think that gives me greater peace now." "I've lived every parent's worst nightmare and I'm the parent that nobody wants to be," she said.

Perhaps as Janet suggests - the person is a known quantity. It's hard to believe that someone would just jump in to a abduction without priors. In other words - the police know exactly who did this based on previous police contact and possible arrests.

Whatever the case - I'm not impressed with the course of the investigation to this point.

No sketch even though the gas station attendant saw him - at least four separate possible videoed locations and not even a description.

So far it appears the police have checked most of the areas where the cell phone pinged - but have found nothing and would have had zero evidence except for a kids found the phone.

Also, no finger prints from the SUV?

I hope you are right that they at least have an inkling as to a suspect.  I get the feeling that they have never had a case with this much media attention and that LE is in full scramble mode rather than seek and capture mode IMO.

They're not really following typical procedures when they appear to have evidence that could be shared to get this criminal off the streets.

So, I hope they know what they're doing, but so far, I'm not impressed.

Police recover missing Gresham woman's cell phone
Posted on October 16, 2012 at 5:19 PM

 Updated today at 1:15 PM

 ::snipping2::

Friday, K-9s were being used to search the area where the phone was found, which is about a mile and a half from the Shell gas station where Whitney Heichel's bank card was used the morning she disappeared, and about two miles from the Wood Village Walmart where her abandoned SUV was found, with the passenger window broken out.

Investigators also continued to search Friday for a third day in the Larch Mountain area.

Missing since 6:45 am - 7:00 am on Tuesday the 17th.

If the phone was charging over-night - which is likely and when most people are re-charging - a smart phone could hold a charge with little usage for two days and maybe even three if it was on the entire time. Makes sense that it was indeed on as the police have been apparently searching every point where there was a ping.

Further - I wonder if this is an IPhone 5 - these have a LI ion battery that is twice the size of a IPhone 4 or earlier models. Apple using the larger LI ion battery was trying to solve the short battery life due to processor consumption.

Edit for clarification on missing dates.

Wow.  He didn't even bother to turn the phone off.

Yes, either off his rocker or high/jonesing for drugs.

I agree.  When Jill went missing in Melbourne Australia LE immediately released the video of her encounter with the abductor.  It proved vital to his arrest.

I think of Kyron Horman's disappearance and following investigation and can't help but shake my head a little.

So far it's not looking like a possession robbery - meaning her car and phone were not taken. Fast cash can be had with the sale of a cell phone - you just remove the sim card and replace it with another. Also, no idea how much was taken from her bank account. The police said in the presser - they were going through the courts to get that info. I wonder why Clint just didn't print out the last few months of activity. Not to cast aspersions on him.

The cell phone would be an easy one hundred.

What's interesting is there was a little girl molested in an aisle at WalMart in the same town. The police immediately released that video to hunt him down. I stumbled across that article will look at the updates on Whitney.

yeah, I hear ya. What's interesting in that case is Terri was found to be located at the Fred Meyers at 9:07/9:14 am if I recall correctly. So, there was a video that has stymied that entire investigation. Not to mention a receipt.

Oregon LE doesn't have the best track record when it comes to high profile disappearances.

About 12 months ago I was shopping and my cell phone dropped out of my pocket. When I got home - I found it was missing. I went back to the store and looked around and asked if anyone had seen it or turned it in - no luck.

I came home and logged into my cell phone provider and saw there were 5 calls made - so I did what anyone would do - I called the numbers.

One was her boyfriend, one was her sister and one was a friend of hers. They all told me who had it and she was trying to sell it. I got the boyfriend to give me her number - he didn't want her to go to jail. I called her and she answered - long story short - I got the phone back and when I went to pick it up - I recognized her. She was wearing these terrible fuzzy boots that no one could forget. She saw it drop to the floor - knew it was mine, but decided to keep it anyway.

Moral of the story - cell phones can be more than traced off of a tower. Info can be gleaned to see who may have been called and any associations. In this case - I doubt Whitney tossed it - and there may be Touch DNA beyond the kids.
