Search leader: Heichel's sweater first clue found by searchers
By Dan Tilkin KATU News and KATU.com Staff Published: Oct 25, 2012 at 6:19 PM PDT

PORTLAND, Ore. - Without the effort of the Jehovah's Witness Church it's likely we would still be wondering what happened to 21-year-old Whitney Heichel .

It was a week ago today dozens of members of Heichel's church were combing Dodge Park and Larch mountain in a systematic search for her just hours after she disappeared. With the help of church members, investigators located Heichel’s body on Larch Mountain early Friday evening, Oct. 19, after she disappeared earlier in the week.

Church member Bob Weaver coordinated the search. He was a Portland firefighter for nearly 30 years and a para-rescueman in the Air Force Reserve.

"We were looking for Whitney. We weren't looking for evidence," Weaver said by phone Thursday while traveling.

He said the first clue they found was Heichel's sweater.

"They found the sweater and we marked that on a map and focused on and used that as a direction to focus our search," Weaver said. "And then we found evidence at Dodge Park at two in the morning – guy called me and I said, 'wait there, call police and wait there till police shows up.'"

Church members found Heichel's sweater along Dodge Park Boulevard east of Gresham near the tiny town of Pleasant Home. It is six miles from Dodge Park where church members found more undisclosed clues.

Weaver said they started their search at Heichel's apartment and from there sent out about 60 carloads of church members to scour remote areas for her. Those dozens, even hundreds, of searchers mobilized quickly. Searchers took cellphone pictures of areas highlighted on a map to use while searching.

The searchers began to realize the situation was dire when they found Heichel's sweater.

They targeted Larch Mountain where her body was found because they figured that's as far as anyone could have driven, considering the two and a half hours between the times she disappeared and her ATM card was used at a gas station in Gresham.

"Divided that in half (an hour and 15 minutes) and we started driving and seeing how far we can go in an hour and 15 minutes. (We) ended up at Larch Mountain, because of something on the Internet about Larch Mountain, which ended up not being true, but still, you got to do with every possible (lead); one hour 15 minutes, mile marker 9 up Larch Mountain Road – mile marker 10, it all worked out," Weaver said.

Many wondered if church members were tracking Heichel’s cellphone. But Weaver said they had no way to do that. He thinks if it weren't for the church's effort, Heichel's disappearance would still be a mystery.

"Any evidence they did locate up there would have been deteriorated, and her body would probably not have been found until next year with a hunter or something. That's why we really feel like there was divine intervention on this," he said.

Weaver said he's been reluctant to talk about their effort and is emotionally drained.

My boyfriend and I were diving up to Larch moutain to hunt, we were driving around looking through bushes to see if we saw any deer. About 4 miles past all houses he turned to me an said he saw a girl sitting on a dead tree curled up.. I told him maybe we should turn around and ask if she needed help but we said f*** it and kept going. Now that we've seen this everywhere we feel horrible because the girl he saw ha brown hair and everything, plus it was strange to see a girl in the woods with no car and around no houses. I'm so sorry that we could have been a huge help and saved this girl but we didn't. My boyfriend called te cops and reported that we saw her and that she was still alive.

Grand jury indicts Jonathan Holt on additional charges in death of Whitney Heichel
 By Steve Mayes, The Oregonian

Jonathan Holt, the Gresham man accused of murdering Whitney Heichel, was indicted Friday in Clackamas County Circuit Court on additional charges of kidnap, robbery and sodomy.

Holt was charged with several counts of aggravated murder as legal strategy. In such cases, the state typically presents various theories of a crime. In Holt's case, he is charged with committing murder to cover up the other crimes or to conceal his identity.

Seven people testified before the grand jury, six of them representing law enforcement agencies. The seventh, Evan Judd, is a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses church that Holt and Heichel attended.

In an affidavit to get a search warrant, investigators said they were following Jonathan Holt on October 19; three days after Heichel first disappeared. During the course of that day, they followed Holt to his job at a company called Canteen Vending in North Portland.

While in the Canteen parking lot, officers said they saw Holt “walk away from his vehicle back towards the southeast corner of the business. Jonathan Holt was seen standing up against the wall that faces N. Lagoon Avenue. Jonathan Holt was seen standing there for a moment and Sergeant Kubic felt like it appeared as if Jonathan Holt might be dropping something in the shrubbery along the wall of the business.”

Another deputy later went back and searched the same area. He found a black semi-automatic handgun in the bushes partially covered in mud, according to the court documents.

Investigators said they followed Holt later that same day as he drove to the Gresham Police Department for a scheduled interview with detectives.

While there, investigators wrote that a deputy “saw Jonathan Holt kneel down next to tall grass planted in an island in the parking lot. Deputy Zwick observed Jonathan Holt pretending to tie his shoes while kneeling down. Deputy Zwick observed Jonathan Holt quickly move his hand next to the tall grass then back to his shoes and while doing so Jonathan Holt looked around the parking lot.”

Zwick said that he suspected that Holt had thrown something into the grass.

Another deputy later found a second handgun when he searched the grass, according to the court documents.

Investigators also said they found ammunition boxes, three magazines, several rounds of 9mm ammunition and an empty holster.

 ::snipping2::

During that same interview, police said Holt also admitted to downloading and possessing child pornography on his laptop and external hard drives.

At the end of the interview, detectives said Holt agreed to show them where he had shot and killed Heichel, according to the affidavit.

That Friday night, Holt and several detectives drove to an area off Thomas Road in Clackamas County. Holt pointed out a small turn-out where he said he killed Heichel, officers wrote.

 ::snipping2::

Clint said that the Holts had a key to the Heichel’s apartment because the Holts had previously watered their plants while the Heichels were on vacation, according to the affidavit.

Clint said he was very sure that they got the key back shortly after returning.

According to investigators, Holt admitted to stealing an old iPhone from the Heichel’s apartment. Clint said he was not aware of that, but when he later checked for the phone in a drawer he confirmed it was indeed gone.

Whitney’s SUV

One of Whitney’s friends was the first person to find her Ford Explorer at a Shell gas station in Troutdale in the afternoon of the day she disappeared.

Police eventually managed to get the SUV to their secure facility, where they inspected the vehicle top to bottom.

According to the search warrant affidavit, they found the following things:

The front passenger window was missing and there was glass on the inside and outside running boards
There was a light dusting of dry, dirty mist over the exterior
All four tires had “copious amounts of dried and evergreen needles stuck to them”
The inside of the windshield had some unknown clear and red and white-matter clumps stuck to it
Several red spots that were “consistent with the color of blood” were found inside the car
Detectives found clumps of long hair in several places
Detective “observed a large wet stained area in the middle of the floorboards partially under the front part of the rear seat.” The substance was red and looked like blood that had pooled. Some areas were darker, which is “consistent with coagulated blood.”

Wouldn't the fact that he had two handguns with him go to pre-meditation and therefore get him the death penalty?

Docs: Holt had guns, child porn and stolen iPhone
Posted on October 26, 2012 at 6:06 PM

 Updated today at 6:35 PM

 ::snipping2::

A detective following Holt said they watched him dump ammunition boxes, ammunition and a holster at locations around Gresham. Later, before a scheduled interview with detectives, Holt hid a handgun near his work and another in the bushes of the Gresham Police Department parking lot, both of which were recovered by police.

In his interview, Holt admitted shooting and killing Heichel. He also told police had had downloaded child pornography on computers he owned.

Initially, Holt said he had been robbed at gunpoint the morning of October 16, the same day Whitney Heichel disappeared.

Holt told detectives two men robbed him, taking his backpack and electronics while he was on his way to ride the MAX to work -- a story police said was retold later with inconsistencies.

Holt's wife told detectives he had told her the story about being robbed, and she replied to detectives that the story sounded "crazy" and she felt he was "probably lying" to her.

WOW...

I read it all.  Shocking and unsettling to say the least.

A few things that come to mind...

From the 2010 Toyota Scion that Jonathan Holt was driving but according to the document was Amanda Holt's car, a piece of paper was found titled "Sound Department" with the names J. Holt and C. Heichel written on it.

Amanda Holt knew and was FB friends with Whitney Heichel for about two years...and they went to the same church twice a week...but they weren't close friends according to Amanda Holt.

The Holt's had moved into the apartment complex where the Heichel's lived approximately two months before the murder.

The cellphone that Jonathan Holt threw out at the murder scene was actually Clint Heichel's phone that Jonathan told police he took from the Heichel's home and put a new SIM card in so he could use it.  Clint Heichel hadn't noticed the IPhone3 was missing until he was asked about it by police and then he checked and discovered it was missing.  The only call made from the cellphone that morning had been at 6:08am to the Starbuck's where Whitney worked.

Whitney was apparently shot (at least once in the head) in her vehicle with a 9mm.  Although the vehicle reportedly showed definite signs of an attempted "clean up" four spent 9mm shell casings were found in the vehicle.  Jonathan Holt's fingerprint was found on a Febreeze bottle that was left on the front passenger seat in the vehicle with about 1/4 of the contents remaining in it.

Detectives: Whitney Heichel murder suspect made up robbery story as alibi

Posted: Oct 26, 2012 8:56 PM CDT
Updated: Oct 26, 2012 11:15 PM CDT
By FOX 12 Webstaff - email

GRESHAM, OR (KPTV) -
Investigators said the man accused of murdering Whitney Heichel made up a story about a robbery to create an alibi for the day the 21-year-old woman was killed.

Court documents released Friday said two members of the search party trying to find Heichel spotted Jonathan Holt wandering around near Southeast 257th and Stark on Oct. 16. as they drove home.

They recognized him as a friend from church, according to investigators, and offered him a ride. He acted like he was going to get in, before stopping and saying, "I just need to finish clearing my head," according to the report.

The searchers then called Holt's wife, who they said was crying. She said her husband was missing. Holt's wife later told investigators the searchers replied to her, "No he's not, he's right here on 257th and Stark, walking around."

The searchers then approached Holt again and asked him what was wrong. Holt told the searchers he had been robbed at gunpoint that morning by two black men as he walked to the MAX station.

Holt told investigators his motorcycle wouldn't start, so he decided to walk to the MAX station and that's when the robbery happened.

He also told them he was in a very bad financial situation, his wife was the only source of income and they were barely getting by.

Holt said the robbers took the only valuable items they still had, including his wallet, keys, iPhone, iPad and laptop. He then thought he would lose his job because of being late, according to the court documents, which is why he spent the whole day walking around.

Detectives said as the conversation continued, Holt changed or added details about the robbery.

Holt's wife told investigators her husband had run off before when things weren't going well, referring to a 2011 stolen car investigation in which Holt told police he had a mental breakdown.

Holt's wife told detectives "he was probably lying to me" about the robbery.

EVIDENCE IN THE CASE

According to court documents, investigators believe Holt tried to clean Heichel's SUV up after he killed her. They found a Febreze bottle inside the SUV that only had a quarter of the liquid left. However, spots of blood were found throughout and a pool of blood and hair were found under the mats.

A fingerprint pulled from the Febreze bottled matched that of Holt, according to detectives.

Her Ford Explorer was discovered in a Walmart parking lot with the passenger window broken out. A Walmart employee reported to detectives finding a soiled linen with red colored spots on them in a garbage bin at the store.

 ::snipping2::
Several of the items Holt had claimed were stolen in the robbery, according to court documents, were seized by investigators.

NOT GUILTY PLEA

Holt was arrested Oct. 19 and he pleaded not guilty in court Friday. He was arraigned on six counts of aggravated murder, one count of kidnapping, one count of sodomy and two counts of robbery.

Holt remains behind bars without bail. His trial is set for Dec. 14.

Heichel's family hosted an open house at a Gresham church Friday for people who have shown their love and support for the 21-year-old woman.

Whitney Heichel's accused killer acted erratically after her death, documents say
 By Aimee Green, The Oregonian
on October 26, 2012 at 8:06 PM, updated October 26, 2012 at 8:52 PM

In 44 pages outlining the case against accused killer Jonathan Holt, Gresham police paint the picture of a young man who was acting erratically -- dumping guns, ammunition boxes and apparently bloody linens in public places -- in the hours and days after 21-year-old Whitney Heichel went missing.

After Heichel didn't arrive at work at 7 a.m. Oct. 16, friends and family scoured the region for her. But Holt, who was a neighbor of Heichel's, didn't take part and was nowhere to be found. Nearly 12 hours later, friends spotted Holt walking along Northeast 257th Avenue.

When they offered him a ride, he refused, saying "I just need to finish clearing my head," according to search warrant affidavits made public Friday.

The documents offer a chilling and detailed summary into the investigation into Holt, who was indicted Friday in Clackamas County Circuit Court on charges of aggravated murder, kidnapping, robbery and sodomy.

Investigators flagged Jonathan Holt as suspicious almost immediately. The affidavits outline how Gresham police, Multnomah County sheriff's deputies and U.S. marshals secretly followed Holt around on the morning of Oct. 19 -- starting when he left his apartment for work.

Police say he showed up to work at Canteen Vending in North Portland, but hours into his shift, they watched him return to his car, rummage around in the trunk, then walk to some shrubs next to the business where he appeared to drop something. Police later recovered a black 9 mm semi-automatic handgun.

Holt next drove to a field near Northeast 29th and Hale avenues in Gresham, where police saw Holt drop something in the grass. Police say Holt next walked to an apartment complex, where he appeared to drop something into the trash bins. Police later found 9 mm ammunition, an empty holster and crumpled boxes of ammunition in the field, nearby bushes and the trash bins.

Holt next drove to the Gresham Police Department for a prearranged interview. He walked over to an island of tall grass in the parking lot, then knelt down as if he were "pretending to tie his shoes," the affidavits state. Police later recovered a handgun from that spot.

A forensic scientist who examined Whitney Heichel's 1999 Ford Explorer concluded that someone had done a poor job of cleaning it up.

"There was blood in the creases and seams of the seats and yet the surfaces of the seat are mostly clean," wrote Gresham Detective Ryan Gleason, after speaking with the forensic scientist.

A "large quantity of blood" was found on the seats, and bone fragments appeared to be covered up by a floor mat. Investigators also found what appeared to be a bloody tooth, a clump of long hair, four spent 9mm shell casings in the SUV and a mostly used bottle of Febreze fabric freshener.

"I can look back over the past 10 years and there were no steps wasted, and there are no regrets,'' she said. "I did all I knew to do and I think that gives me greater peace now." "I've lived every parent's worst nightmare and I'm the parent that nobody wants to be," she said.
