3 killed, 4 injured, suspect still at large in rampage at Azana Spa in Brookfield
October 21, 2012

Brookfield - Three people were killed in a shooting rampage late Sunday morning at a spa near the Brookfield Square Mall.

Four others were shot, and police continue to search for Radcliffe F. Haughton, 45, of Brown Deer. Police said he is 6 feet 2 inches tall, African-American and 270 pounds, wearing a gray sweater and blue jeans and carrying a white and black backpack. Police have located a black Mazda Protégé that was linked to Haughton.

The multiple shooting occurred about 11 a.m. at the Azana Salon & Spa on N. Moorland Road, just south of Blue Mound Road and across the street from Brookfield Square.

Police said at a 3:30 p.m. press conference that they had still not cleared the entire building, and that their investigation of the building was hampered by what they believe to be an improvised explosive device. The Milwaukee bomb squad had been called to the scene.

Anyone with information on the suspect is asked to call police at (262) 787-3701.

Shooter tried to take victim hostage, friends say
October 21, 2012

Wauwatosa - The gunman at the Azana Spa & Salon attempted to take a receptionist hostage after shooting her in the leg, friends of the woman said after visiting her Sunday afternoon at Froedtert Hospital.

The shooter, identified as Radcliffe F. Haughton, came into the salon and went past the receptionist, who heard shooting a short time later, said Doug Epker of East Troy, who visited the woman at the emergency room where she was treated for a gunshot wound to the leg.

"She said the gunman came in and she hid for a little bit but he wasn't looking for her, he passed her up," Epker said in an interview. "And she came back out of hiding and that's when she got shot."

After the woman was wounded, the shooter "tried dragging her upstairs, but her hip, where she was shot, it broke her bone and she couldn't walk, luckily, otherwise she might not be alive," Epker said.

The woman "said the guy dropped his clip. She said it was definitely a pistol," he said.

Wounded, the woman managed to escape. "Somehow she found an open door, she got out and rolled down the hill," Epker said.

Father of suspect warned son, 'Don't do anything stupid'
October 21, 2012

The father of the man suspected of shooting seven people at a Brookfield spa Sunday morning said his son asked to stay with him in Florida after the suspect's wife got a restraining order against him last week.

"He told me, 'I have to get out of Wisconsin,' " said Radcliffe Haughton Sr., who spoke with his son, the suspected gunman, Radcliffe Haughton, last week on the phone.

Police are still searching for the younger Haughton, who they say shot seven people - killing three - around 11 a.m. Sunday at the Azana Salon & Spa on Moorland Road.

Reached at his home in Florida, Haughton's father had not heard about his son.

"So he hasn't been apprehended? Oh Lord. Have mercy, God," he said.

A restraining order was issued against Haughton on Thursday in Milwaukee County Circuit Court.

According to online court records, Haughton was not allowed to have firearms and was directed to deliver firearms to the sheriff. The order does not indicate if that happened.

His wife, Zina Haughton, has a beautician's license and might have worked at the salon, Haughton's father said.

The elder Haughton said that when he spoke to his son last week, he told him he could come and stay with him in Florida if he needed to.

"I told him, 'Whatever you do, don't do anything stupid,'" his father said.

"I am so saddened. I don't know what to tell you. As his father, I am very, very sorry and I did not expect this from my son."

Three killed in shooting at Milwaukee-area salon; possible bomb delays investigation
October 21, 2012

Updated at 5:03 p.m. ET: Three people were killed and four others were injured Sunday when a gunman suspect opened fire in a hair salon in Brookfield, Wis., near Milwaukee, police said.

Brookfield Police Chief Daniel Tushaus said an improvised explosive device was left in or near the salon, which is across the street from Brookfield Square mall in Brookfield, about 10 miles west of Milwaukee. The device was hampering authorities' efforts to scan the scene, he said.
Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital in Milwaukee, where the victims were taken for treatment, was on lockdown because the suspect, identified as Radcliffe Franklin Haughton, 45, was still at large.
Police said the shootings began at 11:09 a.m. (12:09 p.m. ET) at the Azana Salon and Spa, across Moorland Road from the mall. Brookfield Square was closed as SWAT team members scoured the area for the suspect.
Haughton was described as an African-American male, 6 feet, 1 inch tall, weighing about 210 pounds and last seen wearing a grey sweater and carrying a white and black backpack. Police were surrounding Haughton's home in Brown Deer, about 15 miles north of Milwaukee, NBC station WTMJ of Milwaukee reported.

Two workers at the salon said Haughton was the estranged husband of one of their co-workers, a hairstylist. They said they didn't know whether he had left or was still in another part of the building.

Police: Spa shooting suspect slashed wife's tires
October 21, 2012

BROOKFIELD, Wis. (AP) — Authorities say the man accused of killing three and wounding four at a Wisconsin day spa had slashed his wife's tires two weeks before Sunday's shooting.

Brookfield Police Chief Dan Tushaus said at a news conference Sunday night that the man's wife was an employee at the spa. It is not clear if she was among the victims.

The suspect, Radcliffe Franklin Haughton, was found dead inside the spa of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities said he had a four-year restraining order against him.

I expected this.  I really, really don't understand why some men just can't let their wives go.  Why must they harm and kill them along with other innocent people?  And then they kill themselves.  Sometimes they kill the children and/or pets or burn the house.  Too bad they just don't go out and kill themselves and leave everyone else alone.  I know it doesn't work like that, but I can still wish.  Restraining orders aren't worth the paper they're written on, imo.

Wife of Wis. spa shooter confirmed among dead
October 22, 2012

BROOKFIELD, WIS. A medical examiner says the wife of the suspected gunman who was the subject of a restraining order issued last week was among three women killed in a shooting rampage at a suburban Milwaukee spa.

The Waukesha County medical examiner's office said Monday that 42-year-old Zina Haughton, of Brown Deer, was killed Sunday at the Azana Day Spa.

The other victims are 35-year-old Cary L. Robuck of Racine and 38-year-old Maelyn M. Lind of Oconomowoc.

Four more women were injured and remain hospitalized. One is in critical condition and the other three are in satisfactory condition. Their names haven't been released.

Police say the suspect, 45-year-old Radcliffe Franklin Haughton, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the spa.

According to court documents, Zina Haughton said her husband threatened to throw acid in her face and jealously terrorized her "every waking moment."

In a written request for a restraining order filed Oct. 8, Zina Haughton said her husband was convinced she was cheating on him and that he also vowed to burn her and her family with gas. He said he would kill her if she ever left him or called the police, according to the court papers obtained Monday by The Associated Press.

Haughton was arrested earlier this month for slashing his wife's tires. She was granted a four-year restraining order on Thursday.
