Police: 12-year-old autistic boy killed by alleged drunk driver
January 12, 2014

An autistic boy was killed by an alleged drunk driver in southwest Houston Saturday, a few hours after he got separated from his father during a bike ride.

Alvester Bowens, 12, was hit by a black Ford F150 around 8 p.m. on a high-speed overpass on South Post Oak.

"There was no sidewalk," said HPD officer A. Michon. "He was in the middle of a freeway."

He was killed instantly, authorities said.

According to an aunt, Bowens lived with his father in a nearby home. The two were riding bikes together Saturday afternoon when they somehow got separated. The family reported the missing boy.

Later, police found the body at the accident, wearing blue jeans and a red shirt that matched Bowens' description.

The driver, 40-year-old Gilberto Aguirre, showed signs of intoxication, but police said the accident may have been unavoidable.

Aguirre has been charged with driving while intoxicated. The Harris County District Attorney is trying to decide whether to add a manslaughter charge.

Thank you for moving the thread Klaas.

My condolences to the family of Alvester Bowens.  It seems I've read of more and more cases of children and adults with challenges wandering away, becoming lost and all too often with dire consequences.
