Police issue amber alert for 2-year-old Durham boy

Nov 12 2012

 DURHAM – Police intensified efforts Monday evening to find a 2-year-old Durham boy who went missing earlier in the day after playing with friends.

Authorities issued an amber alert for the boy, Kameron Herby, around 7 p.m.

The child and his mother, Wakise Graham, were visiting a friend at the Cornwallis public housing community at 2500 S. Roxboro St. when he went missing.

“From what the mother said, he was outside playing with the other children, and she called him so they could leave,” Kyarra Thomas, a friend of the family and the girlfriend of Graham’s brother, said. “And then she started talking to a neighbor, and the baby ran back off.”

When Graham called him a second time, the child didn’t come.

“She started searching for him, and couldn’t find him,” Thomas said. “So then, everybody started looking for him. They looked for about 10 or 15 minutes, and then called the police.”

Thomas said Kameron had been playing with other children around one of the apartment buildings. “They were playing football, and had a tub with toys in it,” she said.

Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez was at the scene, along with at least 25 other officers. He said police were knocking on doors and searching a nearby wooded area.

Amber Alert issued for missing Durham toddler

 ::snipping2::

Police are searching for Kameron Jakise Hembry in the 2500 block of South Roxboro Street.

Kameron was last seen around 2:15 p.m. He is about 2 feet tall and was wearing Elmo pants, a Superman shirt with red sleeves and bright orange shoes.

His mother, Wakise Graham, said she was talking to someone for a few minutes and then couldn't find him. She said she looked for him for 15 to 20 minutes before calling police.

"I just want my baby back," Graham said as she choked back tears.

Police Chief Jose Lopez said he was committing as many officers as possible to the search. All-terrain vehicles were being used to search some nearby woods, and tracking dogs and lights to help the search continue into the night were being brought in, he said.

Kameron doesn't live in the area, and police said he might have been confused by his surroundings.

Missing Durham toddler found safe after vanishing for more than seven hours
Updated: November 12, 2012 - 11:15 PM

DURHAM, N.C. --
Two year old Kameron Herby, who was the center of an Amber Alert on Monday, was found safe under mysterious circumstances.

 ::snipping2::

Durham Police rolled in lots of resouces including search dogs, a state highway patrol chopper with heat seeking infrared cameras, and a water rescue unit.

Despite the massive manhunt in the small neighborhood, nothing was found for hours.

About 9:30, after dogs had cleared the scene, a group of volunteers was allowed to look.

Joined by two Durham police officers, the group found the child inside an apartment less than 100 feet from where he disappared.

It was the first apartment they checked.

Searchers say when they knocked on the rear door, someone inside the apartment handed the child to one of the police officers who was with the volunteer group.

Little Kameron was taken to a police command post to be checked out and then transfered to the hospital to be fully examined.

Police placed crime scene tape around apartment 2503 B but refuse to say who lives there or why the child was inside that unit for so many hours.

Warrants were obtained by detectives who will spend the overnight hours executing them as they continue to conduct their probe into the child's disapparence.
