Court docs: Suspect in teen's murder 'obsessed with death

http://www.komonews.com/news/local/104495859.html

By KOMO Staff October 7, 2010

WENATCHEE, Wash. -- A man who a friend described as having an "obsession with death, dead bodies and serial killers" was ordered held on $1 million bail Thursday morning in the murder of a Wenatchee teenager.

Christopher Scott Wilson, 29, was wearing an orange jumpsuit and was shackled at the waist when he appeared before a judge in Chelan County Superior Court.

He is accused of killing 17-year-old Mackenzie Cowell, whose body was found along the Columbia River in February.

Police said she had been fatally beaten, stabbed and strangled, and an autopsy report concluded that someone tried to cut off her arm after she was dead.

Cowell was a classmate with Wilson at the Academy of Hair Design, and investigators said a DNA sample from Wilson matched DNA found on a piece of duct tape recovered from where Cowell's body was found.

According to court documents, Wilson was interviewed twice about Cowell's disappearance, but said he never interacted with her and did not know who killed her.

However, other students at the school told investigators that they saw Wilson speaking with Cowell and that he told them he thought Cowell was "hot," the documents said.

When confronted with the DNA evidence during an interview with police on Wednesday, Wilson asked for a lawyer and was arrested.

The documents filed in court Tuesday indicate that several people had concerns about Wilson:

One friend wrote a letter to police in August claiming Wilson had an "obsession with death, dead bodies and serial killers" and had once tried to choke a female friend.
Another woman called police and said she worked with Wilson previously and that he told her he killed a guest at an Ellensburg-area hotel where he worked several years ago by strangling her with a belt, according to the court documents. Police wrote that they were not able to confirm the killing occured.
A woman who was a student at the Academy of Hair Design with Wilson said that Wilson told her he "liked to cut people up" when he was working at funeral homes. Investigators said Wilson worked at several funeral homes in the Wenatchee area.

When detectives searched Wilson's home after he was arrested they found blood in a basement stairwell, but it was not whose blood it was.
In court on Thursday Wilson said he could not afford an attorney and was appointed a public defender. His lawyer did not challenge the bail request from prosecutors, who said Wilson is a "potential threat" to the community despite his lack of criminal history.

Cowell's mother and several friends were in the courtroom, along with Wilson's mother. None chose to speak with reporters.

At a news conference following the court hearing, investigators said they interviewed 750 people, followed up on 400 leads and tips, and collected 229 pieces of evidence over the last eight months.

"We hope that the arrest may in some way give some measure of relief to Mackenzie's family and friends," said Chief Deputy Robbin Wagg, commander of the task force investigating Cowell's murder.

Officials said they have not yet found the suspected murder weapon. In July investigators released photos of the unique type of knife they believed was used to kill Cowell, hoping it would prompt new leads in the case.

Task force spokesman Captain Doug Jones said detectives are still working to determine exactly what happened the day Cowell was murdered, and urged anyone with information about Wilson or the case to contact police.

Blood found in accused killer's Wenatchee apartment

http://www.komonews.com/news/local/104635069.html

By Associated Press October 9, 2010

WENATCHEE, Wash. (AP) - Police said they found a "fair amount" of blood in the apartment of a man charged with killing a 17-year-old Wenatchee girl. A spokesman for the task force investigating the crime, John Kruse, said the blood was in the carpet padding at a studio apartment rented by Christopher Scott Wilson, 29. It wasn't immediately clear if the carpet above the padding had been replaced, he said, nor is it certain the blood is human.

Wilson was arrested last week and is being held on $1 million bail in the February slaying of beauty school classmate Mackenzie Cowell. Police said he may have had romantic feelings for her, and that his DNA was found on a piece of duct tape at Crescent Bar, on the shore of the Columbia River.

Investigators also found blood spatter and smears in the stairwell of a basement apartment below a salon owned by the suspect's mother. Cowell spent some nights staying in the basement apartment as well as the studio, police said.

Court documents filed this week indicated several people contacted police with concerns about Wilson after Cowell disappeared.

One person wrote a letter to police in August claiming Wilson had an "obsession with death, dead bodies and serial killers" and once tried to choke a female friend.

A woman who was a student at the Academy of Hair Design with Wilson said he told her he "liked to cut people up" when he was working at funeral homes. Investigators said Wilson worked at several funeral homes in the Wenatchee area.

One funeral home owner, Rick Phillips of Telford's Chapel of the Valley, told The Wenatchee World that Wilson worked for him as an embalmer in 2004. He was generally a good employee, Phillips said, but after a few months "some things started to take place, and we let him go. I started becoming uncomfortable, but he didn't do anything real bad." Phillips declined to be more specific.

Some of Wilson's friends told the paper he is funny, kind and caring. "He's not this dark, sinister character like he's being portrayed to be," said Danika Steven of Seattle, a former Wenatchee resident. "He is not a gothic blood monster."

Cowell, 17, disappeared Feb. 9 after leaving the Academy of Hair Design where she and Wilson were students. Her car was found abandoned in Pitcher Canyon in the Squilchuck area later that night. Her body was found along the shoreline at Crescent Bar on Feb. 13. She had been strangled, stabbed in the neck and struck in the head.

Police: Blood found in suspected killer's apartment was Cowell's

http://www.komonews.com/news/local/105197199.html

By KOMO Staff & News Services October 18, 2010

WENATHCEE, Wash. -- Blood found in the apartment of a man charged with killing a 17-year-old Wenatchee girl is a match to the victim, detectives with the Douglas County Sheriff's Department said Monday.

The blood was in the carpet padding at a studio apartment rented by Christopher Scott Wilson, 29.

Wilson was arrested in early October and is being held on $1 million bail in the February slaying of beauty school classmate Mackenzie Cowell. Police said he may have had romantic feelings for her, and that his DNA was found on a piece of duct tape near where Cowell's body was found on the shore of the Columbia River.

Detectives said the blood stain, which was not visible to the naked eye, was soaked through the carpet and padding on to the concrete floor below. The evidence was located when police searched the home after Wilson was arrested.

A sample was sent to the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab in Cheney where a forensic scientist determined the stain contained blood matching Cowell's DNA, investigators said.

Detectives also found blood spatter and smears in the stairwell of a basement apartment below a salon owned by the suspect's mother.

Cowell disappeared Feb. 9 after leaving the Academy of Hair Design where she and Wilson were students. Her body was found along the shoreline at Crescent Bar on Feb. 13.

Police said she had been fatally beaten, stabbed and strangled, and an autopsy report concluded that someone tried to cut off her arm after she was dead.

Second arrest made in MacKenzie Cowell murder investigation

Posted on December 16, 2010 at 10:47 AM

WENATCHEE, Wash. -- Investigators arrested a second person Wednesday night in the murder investigation of MacKenzie Cowell, a Wenatchee teen who was found strangled and stabbed to death along the Columbia River in March 2010.
A close friend of defendant Chris Wilson was arrested at a Tumwater residence and transported and booked into the Chelan County Regional Justice Center.
Investigators first questioned the suspect in October after Wilson was arrested. DNA evidence linked Wilson to the location where Cowell's body was found near Crescent Bar on February 13th.
The suspect initially told investigators she didn't recall the events in February and had no information in Wilson's involvment in Cowell's murder. But police later found videos and pictures that suggested she did.
Police seized computers from Wilson's apartment containing images depicting the suspect posing on the floor of the apartment in the same spot where investigators found a blood stain. Lab results confirmed the stain contained Mackenzie's blood, and police said it appeared the suspect was posing as a dead person.
Investigators also served a search warrant on the suspect's cell phone and found two videos of interest. The first, recorded on June 26th, depicted the suspect entering Wilson's apartment, moving aside a coffee table in the living room, and focusing the camera on the stain lab tests later determined was the dried blood of Cowell.
The second video recorded four days later depicted Wilson asking the suspect if the apartment is clean. The suspect replies, "Considering what happen…ing?" At the end of the video, the suspect  focuses the camera on the location of the rug where the blood stain was later found by investigators. The videos corresponded with the timeframe Chris Wilson moved out of the apartment.
Based on the evidence, investigators determined the suspect rendered criminal assistance to Wilson and obstructed investigators in the murder investigation.
