Hundreds search for clues in Dylan Redwine case

UPDATED:   12/08/2012 06:07:56 PM MSTThe Denver Post

Another large search Saturday for missing 13-year-old Dylan Redwine failed to find the boy or any new clues.

More than 260 volunteers joined law enforcement in the search on Saturday in La Plata County, working in small groups.

Saturday's search focused on several miles on either side of La Plata County Road 240, also known as Florida Road. The road is a common route between Durango and Vallecito, where Dylan was last seen.

Dozens of items were flagged by searchers. Of those, 10 were collected by investigators "for future reference," according to the news release.

The release also conveyed thanks from the Redwine family to all who helped in the search.

Thank you to 260 volunteers that showed up today to help search for Dylan! With staff and personal there were over 320 people! And....EVERYONE came home safe and unharmed! KUDOS TO ALL OF YOU! Collectively we covered nearly 60 miles from roads to back country rugged terrain! All in a day! We had people from all over the state, New Mexico and Arizona - that I'm aware of. If some of you came from elsewhere - speak up! Sadly we didn't find Dylan today but WE ARE NEVER GIVING UP HOPE! At least we know where he's not! It's a big world and we will keep searching.

Volunteers search for Dylan
Hundreds turn out to look for missing teen

“I just hope there will be something found that will help locate him or give the family some help,” said Connie Allen of Vallecito, who was out on County Road 240 near Edgemont Ranch early Saturday morning with other volunteers searching for any sign of Dylan Redwine. Helping out with the effort at right is Darren White of Bayfield.

By Robert Galin
Herald Staff Writer

About 350 people, including more than 260 resident volunteers, participated in Saturday’s continuing search for missing 13-year-old Dylan Redwine. The organized searches focused on County Roads 240 and 501 and the areas around Lemon and Vallecito reservoirs.

“We’re looking for any evidence that might (help us) find Dylan,” said Lt. Ed Phippen, lead investigator with the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Unit. The goal is to find Dylan alive, he said.

By about noon, 10 items of interest had been identified by searchers and were being reviewed, Phippen said. None of the items was considered of “substantial value,” he said.

 ::snipping2::

A number of Redwine family members, including Dylan’s parents; his brother, Cory; and family friends helped with Saturday’s efforts.

“We’re glad to have them out here,” Phippen said.

They were among the 300 who signed up in advance, as well as the nearly 100 or so volunteering from a variety of groups and agencies, some in support functions, Phippen said.

When Dylan was first reported missing, authorities thought “he may have walked or run away,” Phippen said. But after a few days, it was clear something was very wrong, and the investigation became more intense.

“We’re doing a lot better than in the first few days,” he said.

“We hear about these types of situations” across the country, but don’t expect it here,” Phippen said.

“We’re doing the best we can with the resources we have,” and now are prepared and capable of moving ahead with the investigation, he said. He said that, “God forbid” this happens again, local authorities will be more prepared to deal with it.

In fact, the investigation and search have blossomed, Phippen said.

“When law enforcement can only go so far, we depend on the public,” media and other organizations and individuals to help, he said.

Phippen said all of the local registered sex offenders had been checked out and had alibis for the 48-hour period from when Dylan arrived at the airport to the time he was reported missing.

Phippen wanted to reassure residents that the Sheriff’s Office “does not believe there is a sex offender abducting children” from the area.

 ::snipping2::

The searchers were divided into groups of varying numbers to search through certain sections of roads and trails. Some of the searches were expected to take about four hours, while others would last until 3 or 4 p.m., when searchers would start losing sunlight.

In addition to the searchers on foot along the paved roads or other routes, additional searchers were on horses and all-terrain vehicles, especially in the more difficult areas around Lemon and Vallecito, Phippen said.

Silviculturist (tree grower) Darren White came from Allison to help out. White was a member of a group led by Durango resident Clay Colvig, a volunteer with La Plata County Search and Rescue.

The group searched along County Road 240 for about two miles, eventually meeting up with another group that had started four miles away moving toward Colvig’s group.

Another volunteer, Connie Allen of Vallecito, said she came to help because “we know the snow’s coming, and we want to do everything we can to help find Dylan.”

“I’m really impressed with the (volunteer) turnout,” said Colvig, director of Colvig Silver Camps.

Another member of Colvig’s group, Gail Caponi, came from Gallup, N.M., to help. Caponi had planned some activities in Durango and decided that if Dylan was her child, she would want other people to help, so that’s what she did.

Phippen said the search organization began Wednesday. That includes The Edgemont Highlands-Edgemont Ranch management, which provided the Edgemont picnic area off County Road 240 for the search staging area.

Among the organizations that added their support for Saturday’s search were Sheriff’s Office officers and mounted patrol, La Plata County Office of Emergency Management, La Plata County Search and Rescue, County Manager Joe Kerby and other county departments, Durango Fire & Rescue Authority, Durango Police Department, the FBI, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado State Patrol, Durango Transit, Bayfield School District, the Southwest Colorado Chapter of the American Red Cross and others, Phippen said.

In addition to advising on the investigation, Phippen said the FBI provided two victim specialists to help the family cope with the situation.

Dyl,

So many people came out today to help look for you! WOW! I really do think it was the biggest search ever! I was gonna say I wish you were here to have seen it, but I can't - I wish it never had to happen. I wish you were here with us and none of this was happening.
I spent the day hiking with Ryan and Wes and they told me the greatest fun stories of you and them canoeing around the islands on the lake. They showed me the island that you guys went to cuz you wanted to catch a baby goose. And how Nando get out of the canoe causing it to tip and you got wet. Then they found this really great rock that we decided you needed to have and we put it my pack. It started out being probably 5 pounds but I swear by the time we were done it weighed 25! Ryan and Wes took turns carrying the pack tho -so it's all good! We can't wait to give it to you!
Everyone was out. Cory and Mike were out on a team that I think went to Lemon and your mom, Krystal and Aunt Lia were at Vallecito with us and your dad was on the CR. I mean everyone was there!

DON'T GIVE UP ON US BUDDY! DON'T GIVE UP HOPE! WE WILL NEVER GIVE UP!

Luv ya ~ Denisey

More than 300 people search for Dylan Redwine
Authorities still hope to find teen alive
Published  7:13 PM MST Dec 08, 2012

BAYFIELD, Colo. —
More than 300 people spent Saturday combing through ditches and wooded areas in La Plata County, Colo., trying to find evidence of Dylan Redwine's whereabouts.

Ten agencies, including the La Plata County Sheriff's Office, the local police departments and the Red Cross gathered to further search with the community. Searchers hiked more than 60 miles of county roads looking for things Dylan may have thrown out of a car window.

They said it's possible he tried to escape or hide in areas of brush to keep warm. In all, 30 items were flagged. Investigators collected 10 as possible items of interest and will examine them closer.

Butch Knowlson, county emergency management, told Action 7 News that Saturday was really a race against incoming weather. He said forecasted snow would make it difficult to find anything if those items were buried.

"It can limit our search area," he said.

The community was proud to participate in the search, but many said it was difficult, not knowing what they might find.

For the tight-knit town that now has posters up everywhere, the thought of an abduction was completely unexpected, yet, investigators told Action 7 News that's exactly what they think happened.

Lieutenant Ed Phippen of the La Plata County Sheriff's Office said it is now a criminal investigation with the belief that whatever happened was out of Dylan's control or ability to get out.

Dylan's parents also participated in Saturday's search. Mark Redwine, Dylan's father, was the last one to see his son. Redwine took a lie detector test and it was found inconclusive, which could mean a number of things.

Lt. Phippen said that they have not ruled anyone out as a suspect.

Phippen said there is no reason to make it a recovery and not a rescue mission yet.

Authorities’ phones have been flooded with tips from throughout the nation, so investigators said it is possible Dylan has left Colorado.

A hypothetical question:

If his father had something to do with his disappearance and he is allowing LE to use all these resources in searching for Dylan, can Dad be held responsible for these costs?

Didn't Texas Equasearch try to file this kind of action against the witch??

There is definitely something fishy. I keep going back and forth about the dad. Why would he do something Dylan after fighting to get him there for Thanksgiving. But why if he wanted him so bad would he get up early and leave him home rather than staying home with him. He was only going to be there a few days.

The stories aren't staying constant either. Did Dylan take his back pack and leave or did he leave his back pack. Why was the only place the dogs got a hit was in the water at the lake. If Dylan had spent the night on the couch and had cereal why didn't they get a hit at the dads house. Or have I miss read it.

Scammer says he kidnapped Dylan Redwine
December 10, 2012

FARMINGTON — A man said he kidnapped Dylan Redwine and is asking for money for the 13-year-old’s release.

But the man is lying.

“This is a scam,” La Plata County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Jim Ezzell said in a statement. “Do not send him money.”

Dylan has been missing since Nov. 19. Dylan’s father, Mark Redwine, said he last saw his son early that morning.

A man who identified himself as Abass Gadafi is claiming on Facebook to be a “boss of a kidnapper gang,” and a new Bayfield, Colo. resident. He said he is holding Dylan captive and will release him for
$5,000 and he will provide a picture of him for $1,000.

The money is to be sent to an account in the United Kingdom via Western Union, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office is asking anyone who is contacted by the person to call law enforcement at 970-385-2900.

Good question.  HOPEFULLY, IF the dad is responsible he will be punished appropriately, which would eliminate the possibility of his being able to pay for any search costs from behind bars for a very very long time.

But they've got to find Dylan first to even know what really happened....sigh...

In the witch's case, she should have had to pay imo.

Dylan Redwine scam hits Facebook
December 10, 2012

The La Plata County Sheriff's Office says an offer on Facebook to return missing Dylan Redwine is a hoax.

A person identifies himself as Abass Gadafi, a new resident of the Bayfield area. He claims to be the "boss of a kidnapper gang" and claims to be holding Dylan Redwine captive and wants $1,000 to provide a photo of Dylan and then he expects another $4,000 in order to release Dylan. The money is to be sent to an address in the UK via Western Union.

"This is a scam," cautions Captain Jim Ezzell with the La Plata County Sheriff's Office. "Do not send any money. Anyone who has been contacted by this individual is asked to please notify the Sheriff's Office at (970) 385-2900."

Dozens of the Dylan Redwine Task Force investigators continue to follow up on aspects of the on-going investigation in Dylan's disappearance. The volume of tips received on the tip-line is keeping several investigators, both locally and out of the area busy. Tips have come in from across the US and are continuing to come in. The tips include information relative to theories, items, locations and persons.

The items recovered during the community search on December 8 are being evaluated for their value to this investigation
