I think the US needs to have this discussion.  It needs to be expanded to education, social services, and the workplace.

Critics have warned that the provision of translation and interpretation services only serves to perpetuate the language barrier, heightening the divide between foreigners and the rest of the UK. They claim that such services provide little incentive for them to learn English.

Certain London Trusts provide services for patients speaking more than 120 languages between them.

"The country has to decide which direction it's going in," she said. "Is it going to spend many, many years to come, translating and interpreting? Or the alternative is that we invest in our common language."

Some trusts spent more than £300,000 on interpreters in the last financial year.

These foreigners come to our country, take up scarce jobs, literally taking the bread out of our young peoples mouths,   avail themselves of our precious health services , and haven't even the decency to learn the language, and we provide expensive interpreter services, WE need our heads looked at.

The immigrants   not only get  'free  translators'     -- in the out patients  departments , they  are  rushed in front of the queue 's. When  other   waiting  patients,   protest..... they are told by nursing staff,   that as translators are 'so' expensive, they  have to rush them forward ahead of every one else, to save money!!
Talk about  double insults to this  long suffering British public,  every one is becoming  VERY ANGRY .
