Jodi looked very engaged today and "on". She's calling shots somewhere in this. She's going to blame others in her statement. She may back off Travis......... if her defense attorneys have been able to convince her she needs to back off.......... but she's going to blame her childhood, etc. That would be hard to do if her Mom addresses the jury and seems like a nice person, particularly if she doesn't confirm abuse, etc.

That is what I kept trying to say last Thursday. I think I captured a photo of her standing looking at Wilmott while the jury was leaving and she had her chest thrusted out. LIke someone who was
trying to intimate Wilmott.

A DECENT, LOVING MOTHER SHOULD STAND UP FOR HER KID THAT SHE BORE! imo

You don't have to say you agree with her actions, but at the very least you could
say, PLEASE JURY do not kill my daughter. She is troubled. We all know that now.
I can only plead for mercy. I don't know something like that.

And grandma could get up outta that wheelchair like we saw in the video and say something!
Especially a gradma saying Jodi's been good to me and grandpa.

Kermit

Considering I do not want ANYTHING swaying the jury away from a death penalty verdict ...I hope family members do not speak on behalf of Jodi but ... could it be that wheels are currently being turned by the defense to make it happen?

GRACE: ... I expect the mitigation to go on next week. I expect we will hear from Jodi Arias, even though her last turn on the stand did her no favors. I expect to hear from her mother and/or grandmother, from friends and lovers, but I would put my money on the mother and the grandmother. If anyone can save Arias now, it`s them.

I think I heard on HLN the reason the mother doesn't make a plea for her daughter's life
is because if she is to take the stand and say Jodi was a good kid or something to that effect
then Juan Martinez can cross-exam and bring up that Jodi kicked her mother. Things that
the jury never heard.

Kermit

Why is Sandra forced to share that Jodi was "a good kid"?  Could she not address Travis' family and apologize that she and Jodi's father were not more motivated in seeking professional help for a daughter they both recognized was not mentally stable.

Why does Sandra not address Jodi ... reminding her that her actions cannot be condoned ... actions that demand accountability but at the same time assure  Jodi that  the love of her family is unconditional.

Why does Jodi's sibling not address the jury ... sharing precious memorable moments with their sister.

There is nothing that Juan Martinez could counter but ... on the other hand ... the jury may consider the sharing of family members a mitigating factor that could take a death sentence off the table.

Something tells me that Jodi's defense is paving a way for an appeal.  I could be wrong.

Boo Hoo Jodi - your mom searched your room?

I can promise you this, I raised three great kids and if I thought I had reason to search their rooms, I did!  They weren't happy - so I told them, don't give me reason.

Period.

They will tell you now, that this was for their benefit.

She is not to be understood.  She's a wacko.

According to HLN talking heads - if the mother takes the stand she sets up that Juan can cross exam her and bring up stuff that perhaps the family doesn't want known.

Maybe the strategy is to not bring on witnesses so that Juan can not play the taped video from that news show she did right after the verdict that Jodi did saying she would rather die.

so mom, pop, grannie are going to keep it shut down.

Now that's a look that would scare me if I were alone with her!

I agree, the defense would be looking for a way to shut the door on Juan being able to play the tape from the post verdict interview.

Yes, Prayers for all those in the Tornado's wake.

Are her lawyers doing what they Are doing to set up something for her appeal?

Trying to get out of this- not calling witnesses on her behalf?  Is their strategy on her behalf?

Or do they care?

I'm still torn on whether Jodi will speak tomorrow, but I'm leaning toward she will speak.  But I don't have a clue what she would say.  With her, who knows?  I guess we'll find out tomorrow.

Ioca

Judging from the end of this Youtube video of today's proceedings ... my guess is that Jodi will not speak.

Nurmi informs the judge that no witnesses would be called.  The judge inquires about the defendant and ... there is silence.  Nurmi then requests permission to approach the bench and then ... nothing!

However ... when I consider the following that took place at the end of today's proceedings ... maybe Jodi Arias will be called in the mitigating phase.

Video at the link--interview with Jodi's ex-boyfriend

http://www.azcentral.com/community/mesa/articles/20130520jodi-arias-ex-boyfriend-speaks.html

Jodi Arias' ex-boyfriend speaks
Mon May 20, 2013 7:37 PM

In a short but tense hearing Monday morning in Maricopa County Superior Court, Jodi Arias’ lead defense attorney played his poker hand.

Kirk Nurmi asked the court to declare a mistrial because one of his witnesses had allegedly been scared out of testifying. She was supposed to talk about Arias as a friend, part of a death-penalty trial stage called mitigation, in which the defense presents information about the defendant it hopes will sway the jury to impose a life sentence instead of death.

When Judge Sherry Stephens denied his motion, Nurmi decided to fold his hand and close his mitigation case without any mitigating testimony, a strategy that may or may not help Arias during subsequent appeals if she is sentenced to death.

One of Arias’ other mitigation witnesses, a former boyfriend who testified during the guilt stage of the trial, was slated to talk to the jury, too.

Instead he talked to The Arizona Republic and 12 News.

“My biggest goal in talking now is because I didn’t get to talk today,” Darryl Brewer said. “I wanted to speak on behalf of my family, to show we’re not a bunch of chumps who lived with a homicidal maniac.”

Brewer described Arias as “unrecognizable to me now,” different from the young woman he bought a house with in 2006 — and lived with for a year and a half. “She was loving and kind. She was like an aunt to my son.”

“I do not think she’s gotten a fair trial,” Brewer said, but added “no one can condone this heinous crime.” And he thinks she brought the media circus on herself by talking — and lying — to TV reporters after she was arrested.

She needs to go to prison to pay for her crime, he said, but he hoped to convince the jury during his mitigation testimony not to send her to death row.

Hi Cadillac!

I think it was mostly about appeal, and also they had to Grandstand because they weren't going to be able to produce the witness they promised the jury. Nurmi tried to make the point that Jodi wasn't getting effective counsel (an appeal issue) but blamed it on the court because the trial had been televised and the jury wasn't sequestered. What they did yesterday was on Jodi's behalf but also an attempt to cover their own butt, IMO. Who knows if she will make her statement today, but I would guess that Jodi won't let this opportunity pass. She enjoys the limelight.

Thanks Grace

In this interview Darryl Brewer claims when Jodi borrowed the gas cans that she never shared with him that she intended to travel to Mesa, Arizona.  However ... Brewer did testify to the contrary.

This sounds like a guy who feels guilty over having loved Jodi and allowed her to live with him
and his son and then to top it off hand over gas cans to her on her way to premeditated murder.
I think he is grappling with his decision to be with Jodi and help her and can't wrap his head
around her murdering.

but not getting a fair trial - that is just bogus. The defense team is the only people to blame
along with Jodi for lying and then finding unscrupulous witnesses. What if they had put on
the credible Prosecutor psychologist who said she had a personality disorder, we might
be sitting in a different position.

I'm going to go ahead and put up a poll asking for predictions as to whether or not the jury will reach a death sentence verdict. I'm not going to vote until after I see what happens today, but in case you have a strong gut feeling now, or if something should happen during the course of court that seals it for you, it will be there whenever you're ready!
