The Lessons of Steubenville
Posted by Michelle Dean

We worry that everyone surrenders too much of their privacy on social media but, without the oversharing, things in Steubenville, Ohio, might have gone very differently. The underlying story is familiar enough: last August, a young woman, who had been out partying with members of the Big Reds, a high-school football team, woke up alone and, reportedly, with little memory of the night before. It took a couple of days to piece it all together; gossip had to fill in the gaps. What emerged was terrifying: rumor had it that she’d been repeatedly sexually assaulted at several parties, publicly dragged from house to house, unconscious, as a “joke.” Her parents went to the police.

In another time, it might have ended there. Rape cases are difficult to prove. Steubenville is a small town; the Big Reds are very popular; the alleged perpetrators, the witnesses, and the victim all seem to know each other well. No one wanted to talk.

Why didn't anyone speak up when this was happening? Who could stand by and let his happen to this girl? I hope that I raised my sons better that they would have done something to intervene.

Steubenville Facts
This website is sponsored by the City of Steubenville and the Steubenville Police Department. The goal of this site is to disseminate the most accurate information about a recent case involving sexual assault charges pending against two juveniles in Steubenville (Jefferson County Juvenile Court Case Numbers 2012-DL138 and 2012-139). City officials will update the site as new information becomes available.

City leaders know that many people outside Eastern Ohio are interested in this matter and people from other states and countries may not be familiar with some basic facts about the background of the case. This site is not designed to be a forum for how the Juvenile Court ought to rule in this matter.

Steubenville Police request technical and investigative support from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation “BCI” (a state agency supervised by the Ohio Attorney General). At the request of Steubenville Police, BCI expedited the evidence analysis. The analysis involved uncovering and reviewing tens of thousands of emails, texts, and photos from approximately a dozen electronic devices. The vast majority of such data was unrelated to the case.  Investigators and forensic examiners never found any video of the alleged crime.

Joann Gibbs, a forensic analyst of digital media with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation, said she looked at 15 cell phones and two iPads that were submitted by City Police following search warrants.
 She said Apple iPhones with later generation operating systems make it impossible to recover files that are deleted. Gibbs testified she did recover two naked pictures of the victim that were part of text messages sent on Mays’ cell phone.  October 13 hearing

August 22, 2012.  Based on the investigation of the Steubenville Police, two juvenile males were arrested and charged. The Steubenville Files
Posted on January 1, 2013
 ::snipping2::

On August 27, 2012 two members of the Big Red High School football team in Steubenville, Ohio – USA were arrested and charged with the rape and kidnapping of an out of town 16 year old girl that took place on August 11th. At the time of this gang rape, the girl was intoxicated and unconscious. The victim had been intentionally drugged with a “date rape” intoxicant. She was photographed and video was taken of her in this condition, and there is evidence that she was hauled in a comatose state to multiple parties – and almost certainly raped by more members of the local high school football team than just the two players who currently stand charged. There is even evidence that she was urinated upon during this hideous assault.

Despite all this, it looked as though a town rife with corruption, cronyism, illegal gambling  and fixated upon their star high school football team (a major economic revenue engine) were prepared to orchestrate a major cover-up in order to sweep the entire affair under the rug. As this disclosure will document, this cover-up was perpetrated by people in the high school administration, local government and law enforcement.

On December 23, 2012 a cell within Anonymous called “Knight Sec” took up the cause of giving a voice to the victim of this horrible crime, and began unraveling this conspiracy of silence designed to protect a group of these high school football players who had become well known to their fellow students as “The Rape Crew”. Fueled by intelligence they had received from many students at Big Red High School, they launched Operation RollRedRoll by releasing this video.

Steubenville Rape Trial: 'They Were Taking Advantage of Me,' Alleged Victim Texts
By RUSSELL GOLDMAN (@GoldmanRussell)
March 15, 2013
 ::snipping2::

 A 16-year-old West Virginia girl allegedly raped by two high school football players emailed one of her accused attackers the day after a long night of partying to ask why he "would let that happen" and why "would you take my clothes off in front of everyone?"
 ::snipping2::
That email was one of more than 100 electronic messages police recovered from the mobile phones of 16 different teenagers who attended a party with the alleged victim and the two Steubenville, Ohio, students accused of sexually assaulting her
 ::snipping2::
Two of the boys slated to testify today are believed to have photographed the incident, but no charges have been brought against them. Their testimony could be critical because the alleged victim says she remembers nothing of the incident.

Steubenville suspect's text messages paint disturbing picture of night of alleged rape
Fri, Mar 15, 2013 1:32 AM EDT
 ::snipping2::
STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – Across a remarkable couple of hours Thursday, JoAnn Gibb, a slight but tough-minded forensic specialist for the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation, sat on a witness stand in a small, third-floor courtroom here and read the contents of hundreds of teenage text messages – explicit and vulgar, at times celebratory and at other moments desperate and pathetically sad.

They were culled from the cell phones of 17 kids, seized in the investigation that led to two Steubenville High School football players being charged with the August 2012 rape of a 16-year-old West Virginia girl after a night of partying. It is one of the largest cell phone culls in the state's history, and the contents of those messages intensified the trial in this football-mad, aging steel town.

"It was an extraordinary level of evidence and detail," said Katie Hanna of the Ohio Alliance to End Sexual Assault and a veteran ******* of sexual assault cases. "I've never heard of anything like it."
  ::snipping2::
On Thursday afternoon, using the suspects' own words, composed in the moment and reflecting the roller coaster of emotions that such an incident commands, Gibb calmly read the often-profanity-laced, crude, crushing and, at times, grotesque evidence. It was pieced together from an analysis of nearly 350,000 text messages, plus hundreds of thousands of pictures, videos, chats and other exchanges of ultra-connected teens.

Prosecutors may get conviction in Steubenville rape trial, but it will come at a cost
4 hours ago
 ::snipping2::
STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – In the early morning hours of August 12, 2012, Evan Westlake served as designated driver for three of his Steubenville High football teammates and one 16-year-old West Virginia girl he believed to be highly intoxicated.
 ::snipping2::
"It wasn't what I expected to see," Westlake testified Friday at the Jefferson County Justice Center here in this old Eastern Ohio mill town, where Mays and Richmond stand trial for rape. "I wasn't really sure what to think."

Why didn't you stop it, special prosecutor Marianne Hemmeter asked?

"Well," Westlake said, "it wasn't violent. I didn't know exactly what rape was. I always pictured it as forcing yourself on someone."

Let's ignore the obvious point that you don't need to "force" yourself on a girl who is incapacitated by alcohol. Instead, let's simply ask what did Evan Westlake do?

"I said my goodbyes," he testified.

Goodbyes? And what exactly was the response from Mays and Richmond after having someone walk in on them in the middle of that moment – even if, as the defense is arguing, it actually was consensual?

"They said, 'I'll see you Monday at football,' " Westlake said.

See you Monday at football?
 ::snipping2::
It's clear from testimony that this group of friends ran around at all hours of the night with little to no parental supervision, and they at least believed that legendary football coach Reno Saccoccia was capable of helping them get out of trouble. Saccoccia told the Cleveland Plain Dealer on Friday he expects to testify at the trial.
 ::snipping2::
"She wasn't moving," Craig said of witnessing essentially the same basement scene as Westlake. "She wasn't talking. She wasn't participating."
This is backed up by text messages recovered from Mays himself, where he notes to friends "she was barely moving" when explaining why they didn't have intercourse. Friday also brought eyewitness testimony from Cole that Mays also tried to force the girl to perform oral sex on him. This followed Thursday's testimony when a forensic computer experts displayed a text message from Richmond where he claims to have performed oral sex on the girl.

Yet through it all, no one did anything to stop the alleged attacks or have it even register that something wrong was going on.

Instead they joined in on the degradation. Earlier in the night, Mays digitally penetrated the girl while Cole sat right next to him in the backseat of the Volkswagen Jetta that Westlake was driving.
  ::snipping2::
Westlake testified Friday that during the ride he heard laughter from Mays and Cole in the backseat despite music playing loudly. Westlake claimed at one point Mays said, "Get this," perhaps urging someone to film what was happening.

Soon after Westlake saw a light from a cell phone in the dark but continued to concentrate on the road. Cole testified that the light was from the camera on his iPhone 4 and he was filming about a two-minute close up video of Mays violating the girl. Faced with a fairly simple ethical situation, Cole made a porno.
  ::snipping2::
The offer of immunity may well work, but it comes at a cost. For if Mays and Richmond are convicted, then those who whipped out cameras during the criminal acts still walk free.

It was all no big deal, until they wound up frightened and fidgety on a witness stand.

"I felt a lot of regret," Westlake testified.

"It was stupid," Craig testified.

"You realize you did something wrong or stupid," Cole testified.

Too little. Way too late.

Ohio teens guilty of rape, face year-plus in jail
By ANDREW WELSH-HUGGINS | Associated Press – 39 mins ago.

 ::snipping2::
Steubenville High School students Trent Mays and Ma'Lik Richmond were sentenced to at least a year in juvenile jail, capping a case that came to light via a barrage of morning-after text messages, social media posts and online photos and video. Mays was sentenced to an additional year in jail on a charge of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material, to be served after his rape sentence is completed.
 ::snipping2::
The two teens broke down in tears after the verdict was read and later apologized to the victim and to the community. Both were emotional as they spoke, and Richmond struggled at times to talk through his sobs. Richmond's father, Nathaniel, also asked that the victim's family "forgive Malik and Trent for the pain they put you through."

Sad all the way around.
I still am dismayed that no one tried to stop this  while it was happening. Especially by the other girls who witnessed it. What is that saying, there  but for the grace of God go I?
How would thy have felt if his happened to them and o one helped?

This is why those of us on these forums do what we do...justice & accountability - plain & simple. It's pretty gratifying to know that the blogger responsible for bringing this rape to the Steubenville PD does exactly what we do here - search & search google cache & other hidden Internet orifices...

Good article:

Two teenage girls arrested for threatening Steubenville rape victim one day after verdict
Last Updated: 4:10 PM, March 19, 2013

Snipped:
The head football coach at Steubenville High School and the owners of a house where an infamous 12-minute video was filmed could be investigated as Ohio prosecutors look into how adults responded to allegations of rape last year.

Snipped:
The announcement of the guilty verdict was barely an hour old Sunday when state Attorney General Mike DeWine said he was continuing his investigation and would consider charges against anyone who failed to speak up after the summertime attack. That group could include other teens, parents, school officials and coaches for the high school's beloved football team, which has won nine state championships.

Authorities also said they won't put up with people harassing the accuser and took action Monday to prove it, arresting two girls suspected of threatening her well-being in Facebook and Twitter comments Sunday. The Jefferson County girls, ages 15 and 16, were being held in juvenile detention, Steubenville police Capt. Joel Walker said.

The older girl was charged with aggravated menacing for a tweet that threatened homicide and said "you ripped my family apart," according to the attorney general's office. A Facebook posting from the younger girl threatened the accuser with bodily harm, leading to a menacing charge, the office said.

I hope to gosh they charge everyone that knew about it & tried to brush it under the rug. This reminds me of that Jodi Foster / Kelly McGillis move where Jodi Foster played the part of a victim that was gang raped & everyone in the bar rooted on the perpetrators. & at the very least that football coach should never be allowed to teach or coach again. What a despicable role model.

Here's to hoping that the victim is able to move on from this nationally reported crime. Not only was the victim torn apart bc of her "extra curricular activities", but to do it on a national level coming from her best friends is sickening. What is wrong is just that - WRONG. Rape is rape no matter what. If someone is so intoxicated that they're incoherent, then they can't be in a position for "consensual" sex - therefore it's rape. Period.

I hope they don't just get a slap on the wrist.

School superintendent charged in rape case inquiry
Associated Press – 25 mins ago.

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio school superintendent, two coaches and a principal were charged by a grand jury that investigated whether other laws were broken in the rape of a drunken 16-year-old girl by two football players, the state's attorney general said Monday.

The special grand jury convened in Steubenville had investigated whether adults like coaches or school administrators knew of the rape allegation but failed to report it as required by state law.

How do you hold kids accountable if you don't hold the adults accountable?" he said.

DeWine said he believes the grand jury's work is done, barring any new evidence.

The charges against the superintendent, Mike McVey, include felony counts of obstructing justice, DeWine said. McVey wasn't immediately available for comment, but the district planned to issue a statement later Monday.

An elementary school principal, Lynnett Gorman, 40, and a strength coach, Seth Fluharty, 26, are charged with failing to report possible child abuse. A former volunteer coach, Matthew Bellardine, 26, faces several misdemeanor charges, including making false statements and contributing to underage alcohol consumption. It wasn't immediately clear if any of them had attorneys.

The father of a Steubenville rapist has been shot dead after firing at an armed Ohio judge outside a courthouse four years after his son was convicted and days after he was cut from the college football team
By CHEYENNE ROUNDTREE and KEITH GRIFFITH FOR DAILYMAIL.COM and ASSOCIATED PRESS
PUBLISHED: 10:07 EDT, 21 August 2017 | UPDATED: 18:47 EDT, 21 August 2017
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4809690/Judge-shot-wounded-near-Ohio-courthouse-suspect-killed.html

A father of a Steubenville rapist was shot dead after he fired at an armed Ohio judge outside a courthouse four years after his son was convicted of raping a girl and a few weeks after his son lost his eligibility to play football this season.

Nathaniel Richmond, the 51-year-old father of Ma'Lik Richmond, was killed after he 'ambushed' Jefferson County Judge Joseph Bruzzese Jr, 65, on Monday morning.

Richmond fired at the judge several times as the official walked into the Steubenville courthouse, before the father was shot dead by a probation officer.

Bruzzese was rushed via helicopter to a hospital after he was shot at point blank range but is in stable condition and is expected to survive his injuries.

Richmond had fired at least five times at Bruzzese but the judge, who was armed, fired back. At least one of his bullets hit Richmond, according to officials.

Richmond's son Ma'Lik was convicted in 2013 of raping a 16-year-old girl and the young man was recently told he couldn't play football for Youngstown State University this season.

Bruzzese didn't preside over Ma'Lik's rape case and investigators are still looking for a motive for the shooting.

Ma'Lik served about 10 months in a juvenile lockup after being convicted with another Steubenville High School football player of raping the girl during an alcohol-fueled party in 2012.

The case brought international attention to the eastern Ohio city of 18,000 and led to allegations of a cover-up to protect the football team.

Youngstown State announced on August 10 that Ma'Lik would not be playing football this season but would remain part of the football program and participate in practice.

Ma'Lik was a walk-on for the team in January but a student recently launched a petition that called for his removal from the team, citing his rape conviction.

Investigators are still looking for a motive in the shooting and haven't found a connection to the rape case, said Jefferson County Prosecutor Jane Hanlin
