You'll appreciate this, then.  I was furious when I read our college marketing department's new ad campaign.
...

Maybe I'm just hypersensitive since I teach writing, but I really didn't like the "No essays" comment--too anti-writing, in my opinion.  Well, this is where marketing is taking us.[/quote]

I'd be upset about that, too.

Teaching people to write is teaching them how to think. I should tell you about my writing coach here some time. She started off her first session with our group by giving us logic problems. I was the only one who had ever seen one before.

Well, now I do gotta go ( Smile ) to the airport.

Flyingmermaid opinions -

Mel Gibson is a person, weak and vulnerable like the rest of us - with addiction issues to boot - not easy, despite all the money and fame in the world.

Young Girl Raped in Aruba - the saddest thing I have ever heard!  Her parents should be charged and she should be a ward of the court or state - it is a parents JOB to PROTECT their children.

Commercials on TV - The one where the girl lies to the guy about her cell phone service - why not just say I am not interested in dating you but there are prolly tons of girls out there who are.  Why Lie?

Last night I had to endure hours of coverage regarding Fidel Castro - He is a murderer and an animal!  If he dies I will prolly be subject to his funeral for days!  The price I pay for living in SOFL.

Some FM thoughts - my 3 cent!

Re. the 16-yr-old rape victim in Aruba, who’s family is not pressing charges … this sounds sooo much like where we were as late as the 1950s. A rape conviction rarely resulted, and the victim was victimized again. It isn’t exactly easy now, either.

(Please don’t bombard with “Cry Rape” stories; we all know that happens too.)

Aruba is clearly a patriarchal culture, and totally unaffected by contemporary women’s rights movements. I think that the social and political culture contributed enormously to what happened to Natalee.

Greed and Calousness contributed to what happened to Natalee.

If they have to write an essay, it means spelling and grammar may be necessary.  As near as I can tell from the kids in my neighborhood, THAT could be a problem.   Don't start me up!!!  I have to go get tires on my car now.  What fun!

My boss just sent me this e mail:

MUST KNOW *677

I knew about the red light on cars, but not the *677.

It was about 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon, and Lauren was driving to visit a friend. An UNMARKED police car pulled up behind her and put his lights on.  Lauren's parents have always told them never to pull over for an unmarked car on the side of the road, but rather to wait until they get to a gas station, etc.

Lauren had actually listened to her parents advice, and promptly called 677 on her cell phone to tell the police dispatcher that she would not pull over right away. She proceeded to tell the dispatcher that there was an unmarked police car with a flashing red light on his rooftop behind her. The dispatcher checked to see if there were police cars where she was and there weren't, so he told her to keep driving, remain calm, and that he had back up already on the way.

Ten minutes later 4 cop cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her.
One policeman went to her side and the others surrounded the car behind. They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him to the ground. The man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes.

I never knew about the *677 Cell Phone feature, but especially for a woman alone in a car, you should not pull over for an unmarked car. Apparently police have to respect your right to keep going to a safe & quiet place. You obviously need to make some signals that you acknowledge them ( i.e. put on your hazard lights) or call *677 like Lauren did.

Too bad the cell phone companies don't generally give you this little bit of wonderful information.

*Speaking to a service representative at **Bell** Mobility confirmed that *677 was a direct link to State Police Dispatch. So, now it's your turn to let your friends know about *677.

Send this to every person you know; it may save a life

However - if an unmarked car wants to pull you over, and you have a cell phone, you DO have the right, and good sense, to keep driving while calling 911.

If you don't have a cell phone, put your flashers on to acknowledge, and keep driving until you get to a public place (service station).

Not so sure about "well-informed," but it sounded familiar - think I ran across this a few months ago. (Someone sent me the email.)

It may not have started as a hoax. I think *677 is a valid emergency number in Canada. I don't think you'll get anything in the US if you dial it. (Somebody with a cell phone on hand might try ... )
