Police say no body has yet been found after cabin stronghold of fugitive ex-cop goes up in flames
Published February 13, 2013

Los Angeles authorities say no body has yet been recovered in the search for a fugitive ex-cop after the rural California cabin he had been holed up in went up in flames, saying officers had not yet began searching the charred structure.

LAPD Commander Andrew Smith said in a press conference late Tuesday that widely circulated reports a body had been found and was believed to be Christopher Jordan Dorner were false.

"Until Mr. Dorner has been identified as deceased or in cuffs in jail we will continue as if he is out there," Smith said.

Manhunt: Officers ended standoff because of threat, sources say
 February 12, 2013 |  8:23pm
 ::snipping2::
Officers decided to end the standoff at the cabin where Christopher Jordan Dorner was believed to be holed up because they considered him a severe and immediate threat to officers and the public, law enforcement authorities said Tuesday night.

In typical barricade situations with armed suspects, commanders at the scene try to calibrate their response between negotiating a peaceful resolution over an extended period and taking quick action.

But given that Dorner, 33, had allegedly killed three people, including a Riverside police officer, and then mortally wounded a San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy in a fierce gun battle with law enforcement Tuesday afternoon outside the cabin, authorities felt they had to move
 ::snipping2::
As authorities moved into the cabin late Tuesday afternoon, they heard a single gunshot.

According to a law enforcement source, police had broken windows, fired tear gas into the cabin, and urged Dorner, over a loud speaker, to surrender. When they got no response, officers deployed a vehicle to rip down the walls of the cabin "one by one, like peeling an onion," a law enforcement official said.

By the time officers got to the last wall, authorities heard a single gunshot, the source said. Then flames began to spread through the structure, and gunshots, probably set off by the fire, were heard

Authorities work to ID remains believed to belong to fugitive ex-LAPD cop Christopher Dorner
Published February 13, 2013

California authorities believe the manhunt for the revenge-seeking ex-cop ended Tuesday after the suspect engaged in a deadly shootout with police before the vacation cabin he occupied erupted in flames.

Christopher Dorner, the suspect in four killings who had been on the run for six days, never emerged from the ruins but hours later a charred body was found inside a cabin.  An official briefed on the investigation tells The Associated Press that a wallet with a California driver's license with the name Christopher Dorner has been found in the burned rubble of a cabin.

"We have reason to believe that it is him," San Bernardino County sheriff's spokeswoman Cynthia Bachman said. The LAPD said it would not consider the manhunt completed until the remains are identified. The condition of the body is unclear.

FEBRUARY 13TH - THE CULMINATION TO THE REIGN OF TERROR

Authorities work to ID remains believed to belong to fugitive ex-LAPD cop Christopher Dorner
Published February 13, 2013

<snipped>

The search ended when a man believed to be Dorner bolted from hiding, stole two cars, barricaded himself in a vacant cabin and took part in a shootout in which he killed one sheriff's deputy and wounded another.

Game wardens from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife who were part of the search detail spotted the purple Nissan Tuesday that had been reported stolen going in the opposite direction and gave chase, department spokesman Lt. Patrick Foy said. The driver looked like Dorner.

They lost the purple car after it passed a school bus and turned onto a side road, but two other Fish and Wildlife patrols turned up that road a short time later, and were searching for the car when a white pickup truck sped erratically toward the wardens.

"He took a close look at the driver and realized it was the suspect," Foy said.

Dorner, who allegedly stole the pickup truck at gunpoint after crashing the first car, rolled down a window and opened fire on the wardens, striking a warden's truck more than a dozen times.

One of the wardens shot at the suspect as he rounded a curve in the road. It's unclear if he hit him, but the stolen pickup careened off the road and crashed in a snow bank. Dorner then ran on foot to the cabin where he barricaded himself and got in a shootout with San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies and other officers who arrived.

Two deputies were shot, one fatally. Dorner is believed to have ended up at the Seven Oaks Mountain Cabins.

A SWAT team surrounded the cabin and used an armored vehicle to break out the cabin windows, said a law enforcement official who requested anonymity because the investigation was ongoing. The officers then pumped gas into the cabin and blasted a message over a loudspeaker: "Surrender or come out."

The Los Angeles Times reported that just before 5 p.m., authorities began closing in on the suspect. Authorities broke the cabin’s windows and pumped tear gas. After the tear gas, authorities used a demolition vehicle that removed portions of the cabin’s walls, the report said.

A single gunshot eventually rang out and the cabin became engulfed in flames, the Times reported.

Chris Dorner's mindset was so warped.  How did his thinking process perceive that a reign of terror would validate him in any way ... would "clear his name"?

Dorner, 33, had said in a lengthy rant police believe he posted on Facebook that he expected to die in one final, violent confrontation with police, and if it was him in the cabin that's just what happened.

Former LAPD Officer Christopher Dorner Presumed Dead after Gun Battle with Police and Fire Engulfs Cabin he Was Barricaded In

IT HAS COME TO A FIREY, DEADLY END …

The man hunt and stand off with former LA police officer Christopher Dorner who went on a killing spree murdering four individuals. including two police officers, is over. The stand off ended Tuesday at a mountain cabin in Big Bear in a gun battle and fire the engulfed the cabin where Dorner barricaded himself inside. Christopher Dorner  is presumed dead. Early reports from multiple sources of a body found in the cabin were said to be premature as the cabin was too hot to investigate. However, later according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office, investigators found charred human remains in the burned out cabin’s debris. Although they are considered to belong to cop killer Christopher Dorner, forensic test need to be done in order to confirm it. The LA PD and their families can rest easier today as this lunatic, hell bent on revenge and killing those he presumed responsible for his lot in life and their families is dead. Christopher Dorner won’t be down for breakfast.

Mourners Gather For Slain Riverside Officer Michael Crain
Feb 13, 2013 1:06 PM PST

AP) Thousands of people gathered Wednesday for the funeral of a Riverside police officer gunned down a week ago during an alleged revenge rampage by ex-Los Angeles policeman Christopher Dorner.

Throngs of uniformed law enforcement officers from around the nation packed Grove Community Church to mourn Officer Michael Crain, 34. A white-gloved honor guard carried his flag-draped coffin inside to the sound of bagpipes.

His colleagues, with black tape on their badges, massed on a stage next to a floral arrangement in the shape of a badge.

Speakers described Crain as a loving husband and father and praised his 11 years of Riverside police service. "He now becomes a pillar of trust for our community" and a model for others, Riverside police Capt. John Wallace said.

An overflow crowd watched the service on a big-screen television from rows of chairs outside the church. Earlier, dozens of black-and-white patrol cars and fleets of motorcycles escorted the hearse through city streets and under a giant U.S. flag suspended from fire engine ladder trucks.

Cabin where rogue ex-LAPD cop was holed up not intentionally burned down, sheriff says
Published February 13, 2013

Speculations had been mounting over whether police had purposely started a fire to smoke out the suspect, but San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon told reporters Wednesday his deputies did not intentionally burn down the mountain.

McMahon said deputies shot pyrotechnic tear gas into the cabin and it erupted in flames. He says the tactic was intended to drive Dorner out, but it was not their intention to set the cabin on fire. McMahon did not say directly that the tear gas started the blaze and the cause of the fire remained unclear.

Couple says fugitive ex-cop tied them up, stole their car before presumed death
Published February 14, 2013

California couple says they were tied up in their mountain condominium by a fugitive ex-cop who allegedly killed four people before presumably dying after a firefight with law enforcement.

Karen and Jim Reynolds recalled their encounter with Christopher Dorner in chilling detail at a news conference Wednesday, saying Dorner rushed them when they entered the unit Tuesday.

"I thought we were dead," Jim Reynolds said, according to MyFoxLA.com. "Really, it was pretty scary."

The couple said they immediately recognized Dorner from news reports, and although he said he did not want to hurt them, he put pillowcases over their heads and tied up their arms.

Jim Reynolds says Dorner told them, "I don't have a problem with you, I just want to clear my name."

The couple says Dorner fled in their purple Nissan. Karen Reynolds was able to reach her cellphone and dial 911.

Authorities couldn't immediately verify the couple's story to The Associated Press, but it matched early reports from law enforcement officials. Later reports said the incident involved two women from a cleaning crew.

The couple spoke out after authorities announced in an afternoon press conference that they believed the nearly week-long manhunt for Dorner was over, even though human remains found in the burned out cabin where he was believed to have been hiding have not yet been identified.

Couple recounts harrowing Dorner ordeal
February 13, 2013 11:26 p.m.

<snipped>

The couple, who have been married for 36 years, said they were "happy to be alive." They said they had mixed feelings about Dorner, whom they described as calm, alert and methodical. Karen Reynolds said she wasn't expecting to see any of the $1-million-plus reward money offered in the Dorner case. "We heard nobody was getting that because he needed to be captured and convicted," she said.

They said they found evidence that someone had been staying in the cabin, including a gallon of milk in the fridge, but that they didn't know if a previous tenant had left it behind. The last guests were there on Jan. 29.

All of the units are equipped with cable television and Internet. There was no sign of a forced entry.

It was Karen Reynolds' 12:20 p.m. 911 call that set in motion the chain of events that led to a shootout between Dorner and a state Fish and Wildlife warden, then to the standoff at another cabin where he is believed to have exchanged hundreds of rounds in the gun battle with officers before dying.

Considering Chris Dorner's own words in the manifesto ... authorities knew when the reward was offered that there was a good possibility that Dorner would not be "arrested and convicted".

I hope that Jim and Karen Reynold are recipients of this reward.  If it were not for Karen's 911 call that led to the chain of events ... the "reign of terror" could still be ongoing.

Also ... why was this cabin not searched previously?

LOS ANGELES — A San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy killed in a shootout with a man believed to be fugitive former LAPD officer Chris Dorner had gone into the search happy to help his community but wary of the dangers.

San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon identified the deputy Wednesday as Jeremiah MacKay, a man who grew up in the area and followed his father into public service.

MacKay suffered multiple gunshot wounds Tuesday and was transported to Loma Linda Hospital where he died of his injuries. He was 35.

MacKay was a detective who had been with the department for 15 years.

"My condolences go out to the MacKay family," said San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon. "This is truly another sad day for law enforcement. Our department is grieving from this event. It's just a terrible deal for all of us."
