Rome, Italy, Aug 30, 2017 / 03:32 pm
(CNA/EWTN News).-
The persecution and martyrdom of Christians will be the topic of discussion at an annual gathering of Pope Benedict XVI’s former theology students, who will meet in Rome Sept. 1-3 for a reunion and symposium
.
The “Ratzinger Schuelerkreis” is a group of students who studied under Benedict XVI and who continue to meet each year.
Meeting alongside the Schuelerkreis will be a group called the New Schuelerkreis, comprised of young scholars who study the thought of Benedict XVI.
The upcoming symposium is entitled “On the Persecution of Christians and Martyrdom.”
Fr. Stephan Horn, coordinator of the Ratzinger Schuelerkreis and formerly assistant professor to Joseph Ratzinger in Regensburg, told CNA that the topic “met the consensus of the majority of the Schuelerkreis members, and Benedict XVI accepted it and immediately suggested the presenters for the symposium.”

Ratzinger Foundation unveils new prize, announces American winners
Vatican City, Sep 26, 2017 / 01:58 pm
(CNA/EWTN News).-
The Vatican’s Joseph Ratzinger Foundation unveiled a new prize called “Expanding Reason,” aimed at promoting dialogue between the sciences and philosophy and theology in scholarly work
.
Four Americans – Darcia Narvaez from the University of Notre Dame and Michael Schuck, Nancy C. Tuchman, and Jesuit Fr. Michael J. Garanzini from Loyola University – are among this year’s winners.
“Expanding Reason,” the name of the prize, “is a central idea in the teaching and in the work of Joseph Ratzinger (who would become Pope Benedict XVI) because he's a man of intelligence, he's a man of reason, of the search for truth,” Fr. Federico Lombardi, former director of the Holy See Press Office, told EWTN Sept. 26.
President of the Ratzinger Foundation, Fr. Lombardi said the idea for the prize came about as a way to encourage work in the direction of dialogue between science and philosophy, and science and theology – “in research and also in the organization of courses in the university.”

Summorum Pontificum Congress Report
Alessandro Rico September 26, 2017
Summorum Pontificum: ten years later. The Fifth Colloquium in Rome, which marks the tenth anniversary of Pope Benedict XVI’s motu proprio, sustained the importance of an appropriate liturgy to the spiritual aggrandizement of man
Ten years after the promulgation of motu proprio whereby Pope Benedict XVI allowed the Church to celebrate the Mass according to the 1962 Roman Missal, in the form known as the Tridentine Mass, the ‘frontmen’ of what some call “the traditionalist fringe” (but whom I would simply call “good Catholics”) met up for a conference about Summorum Pontificum. The conference took place on September 14th, in Rome, at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, also known as the Angelicum. Among the speakers were Friar Vincenzo M. Nuara, acting as chairman; His Excellence The Most Reverend Bishop Guido Pozzo, Secretary of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei; His Eminence The Most Reverend Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller, Friar Marino Neri, Secretary of Amicizia Sacerdotale Summorum Pontificum; Right Reverend Dom Jean Pateau, Abbot of the Benedectine Abbey of Fontgombault; Dr. Martin Mosebach, writer and essayist (you can find his entire talk here); His Eminence The Most Reverend Cardinal Robert Sarah, Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of Sacraments; Monsignor Markus Graulich, Under Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts; and Dr. Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, former President of IOR (Istituto per le Opere di Religione, the Vatican Bank).

Benedict XVI Writes Preface to Russian Version of Omnia
Metropolitan Gave Pope Francis, Benedict XVI a Copy of the Volume
October 3, 2017
Pope Benedict has written the preface to the Russian version of the Opera Omnia (‘Collected Works’) by Joseph Ratzinger ‘Theology of the Liturgy,’ reported the Joseph Ratzinger – Benedict XVI Vatican Foundation, a Vatican institute inspired by the German Pontiff.
On September 25, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, president of the Department for External Church Relations of the Patriarchate of Moscow, was present in Rome for an ecumenical meeting, where he gave Pope Francis and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI a copy of the volume XI of the Opera Omnia by Joseph Ratzinger, ‘Theology of the Liturgy,’ translated and published in Russian for the editions of the Patriarchate of Moscow
.
The initiative is the result of formal scientific and editorial cooperation between the Publishing House of the Patriarchate of Moscow, the International Association “Sofia: Russian Idea, Idea of Europe,” the International “Sapientia et Scientia” Academy, Libreria Editrice Vaticana and the Joseph Ratzinger – Benedict XVI Vatican Foundation.

Benedict XVI’s secretary denies rumors that he is close to death
Catholic News Agency
October 18, 2017
ROME -
Archbishop Georg Gänswein, the personal secretary of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, has rejected reports that the former pontiff is nearing death
.
Rumors of Benedict XVI being close to death circulated on social media following a quote attributed to Gänswein, which reads, “Pope Benedict is like a candle that fades slowly. He is serene, at peace with God, with himself and the world. He can no longer walk without help and can no longer celebrate Mass.”
However, Gänswein called this quote “pure invention.”
“It is false and wrong! I would like to know who the author of this is,” he said, according to German media outlet kath.net.
“I have received in the last two days many messages that refer to this phrase, and people are worried,” he said.
Last week, Ratzinger’s brother Georg, who is 93, was at the Vatican to visit, and he has now returned home, Gänswein confirmed, adding, “Both had a good time.”

“Theological Relevance of Saint Bonaventure,” Message of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI addressed a message to the participants in a colloquium on the “Theological Relevance of Saint Bonaventure,” which gathered some 50 experts at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, reported Vatican Radio in French (Cyprien Viet).
Joseph Ratzinger’s second post-doctoral thesis, in 1956, was, in fact, on the Theology of History in Saint Bonaventure (1217?-1274); a session of the colloquium was dedicated to it. In fact, the full works of the Pope Emeritus now include a translation in Italian.
Father Federico Lombardi, SJ, President of the Joseph Ratzinger-Benedict XVI Vatican Foundation, read a letter addressed by Benedict XVI to Belgian Jesuit Amaury Begasse de Dhaem, Professor Theology at the Gregorian
.
Greeting the organizers of this colloquium, in the context of the eighth centenary of the birth of Saint Bonaventure (the date varies according to different sources between 1217 and 1221), Benedict XVI expressed the same intellectual enthusiasm. “When I received your invitation, I had just finished reading once again Fernand van Steenberghen’s book on the 13th century and, in comparing it with the subjects of the symposium, I saw at the end with satisfaction how, in the decades since then our knowledge on the 13th century has truly grown and deepened, precisely also in relation to the “Seraphic Doctor,” Bonaventure.
He affirmed notably that “awareness of the depth of his figure and of the richness of perspectives of his thought has augmented considerably.”

On November 17, 2017, Benedict XVI received the three laureates of the Ratzinger Prize in the Vatican: German Lutheran theologian Theodor Dieter; German theologian and Catholic priest Karl Heinz Menke, and Estonian sacred music composer Arvo Part
.
According to a press released by the Joseph Ratzinger-Benedict XVI Vatican Foundation, the meeting was “very intense and serene.” The President of the Foundation, Father Federico Lombardi, SJ, accompanied the three laureates.
Pope Francis will hand the Prize of this seventh edition on November 18 at the Vatican, with the participation of Cardinal Kurt Koch, President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. During the ceremony, the work “Pater Noster,” which Arvo Part composed for Benedict XVI’s 60th anniversary of priesthood in 2011.
The composer, who will play on a piano that belonged to the Pope Emeritus, will be accompanied by a soloist of the “Boys’ Choir” of the Saint Cecilia National Academy. A note of the Foundation recalls that the prize awarded “for the first time” to an artist, expresses “Benedict XVI’s appreciation for music and all the arts, which bring men close to the Truth and foster the encounter with God.”

VATICAN CITY (CNS) --
The theological work and papal teaching of retired Pope Benedict XVI "continue to be a living and precious heritage for the church," Pope Francis said
.
The pope met Nov. 18 with the winners of the 2017 Ratzinger Prize, named for the retired pope to honor those who make significant contributions to theology and culture.
The three winners had met the day before with Pope Benedict in his residence in the Vatican gardens.
Pope Francis told the group that Pope Benedict's "prayer and his discreet and encouraging presence accompany us on our common journey."

Honoring Cardinal Müller, retired pope says bishops never really retire

ROME - Marking the 70th birthday of German Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller, emeritus Pope Benedict XVI said that even though the cardinal is no longer prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, he will continue to have a public role of serving the church
.
The retired pope wrote the introduction to a book of essays honoring Müller on his 70th birthday Dec. 31 and in anticipation of the 40th anniversary of his priestly ordination in February.
Released in early December by the German publisher Herder, the book is titled, The Triune God: Christian Faith in the Secular Age.
In the introduction, Benedict wrote that Blessed Paul VI wanted the more demanding positions in the Roman Curia, particularly the posts of prefect and secretary of the congregations, “to be limited to only five years in order to protect the freedom of the pope and the flexibility of the Curia.”
Addressing Müller, Benedict said, “your five-year commission at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has expired, so you do not have a specific office anymore, but a priest and certainly a bishop and cardinal is never simply retired,” which is why he must continue to “publicly serve the faith.”

Ratzinger Rehabilitates Müller. But the Pope Emeritus Himself Is Being Hit with Accusations of Heresy
The attack in recent days on Ratzinger as theologian comes in a book just off the press that has as its author Enrico Maria Radaelli, known as the most faithful disciple of Romano Amerio (1905-1997), the Swiss philosopher who in 1985 published in “Iota Unum” the most systematic and detailed accusation against the Catholic Church of the second half of the twentieth century, for having subverted the foundations of doctrine in the name of modern subjectivism.
Radaelli’s book is entitled “Al cuore di Ratzinger. Al cuore del mondo,” and is published “pro manuscripto” by Aurea Domus, the publisher that is owned by the author himself, from which it can be bought via e-mail, as well as from a few bookstores in Rome and Milan.
What led Radaelli to the decision to accuse Ratzinger’s theology of being subversive as well was the reading and analysis of his best-known and most widely read theological work, that “Introduction to Christianity” which, published for the first time in 1968, later went through dozens of editions and numerous translations, down to our own day.
Now, what is most most striking is that Radaelli has not found himself alone in demolishing Ratzinger’s theological framework, because he received immediate support from a theologian and philosopher among the most decorated, Monsignor Antonio Livi, dean emeritus of the faculty of philosophy of the Pontifical Lateran University, a pontifical academic and president of the International Science and Commonsense Association.
In Livi’s judgment as well, in fact, Ratzinger and his theology potentially contributed to the rise to power, meaning to an ever more hegemonic role in the seminaries, in the pontifical universities, on the doctrinal commissions, in the curia dicasteries and at the highest levels of the hierarchy up to the papacy, of what he calls “the modernist theology with its evident heretical drift.”
It is not necessary to recap here the arguments that Radaelli musters in his indictment against Ratzinger as theologian and then pope. It is enough to read the perfectly clear presentation that Livi makes of them on this other page of Settimo Cielo:
> L'eresia al potere
From this it can be gathered that Francis is not the only pope who today is the target of a “correctio” for heresy, because not even his predecessor “emeritus” is sheltered from this anymore.
Both Radaelli and Livi are among the first signers of the “correctio” addressed to Pope Francis last summer. And now also of that against Benedict XVI.

Why Ratzinger Is Not a Heretic. The Defense Speaks
The frontal attack on the theology of Joseph Ratzinger / Benedict XVI by Enrico Maria Radaelli and Antonio Livi, which Settimo Cielo covered at the beginning of the year, has given rise to a very lively debate
.
Radaelli and Livi accuse Ratzinger of having reinterpreted the Christian faith “in the conceptual categories proper to modern subjectivism, from the transcendental idealism of Kant to the dialectical idealism of Hegel,” with the result of invalidating precisely “the basic notion of Christianity, that of faith in the revelation of supernatural mysteries by God.” In their judgment, in fact, in the theology of Ratzinger “this notion becomes irreparably deformed by the adoption of the Kantian schema of the impossibility of a metaphysical knowledge of God, which involves the negation of the rational premises of faith.”
On this charge of substantial heresy, Settimo Cielo has already hosted a first reply, signed by Antonio Caragliu.
And now here is a second, written by an administrative magistrate of Rome who is also an esteemed author of works of philosophy and theology.

NEITHER KANT NOR HEGEL. BETTER PAUL IN ATHENS
by Francesco Arzillo
I think that the final part of the unforgettable address by Benedict XVI at the Collège des Bernardins in Paris on September 12, 2008 could offer a decisive key for understanding succinctly - but also retrospectively - the true core of the thought of the “pope theologian.”
These are his exact words:

Pilgrim pope: Benedict says he's journeying toward God
By Cindy Wooden Catholic News Service
2.7.2018 7:57 AM ET
CNS/Paul Haring
VATICAN CITY (CNS) --
"I am on a pilgrimage toward Home," retired Pope Benedict XVI wrote, capitalizing the Italian word "casa" or "home."
Almost exactly five years after announcing his intention to be the first pope in nearly 600 years to resign, Pope Benedict wrote the letter to a journalist from the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.
"I am touched to know how many of the readers of your newspaper want to know how I am experiencing this last period of my life," the 90-year-old retired pope wrote. "In that regard, I can only say that, with the slow diminishing of my physical strength, inwardly I am on a pilgrimage toward Home."
"It is a great grace in this last, sometimes tiring stage of my journey, to be surrounded by a love and kindness that I never could have imagined," said the letter, written on stationery with the heading "Benedictus XVI, Papa emeritus."
Massimo Franco, the journalist, said the letter, dated Feb. 5, was hand-delivered; the newspaper posted it online Feb. 6 and published it on the front page of the print edition Feb. 7.

Benedict XVI’s Abdication, Five Years Later
COMMENTARY: All the immense good that he accomplished will continue to bear fruit. But his decision to abdicate will occupy the first place evaluating his legacy
.
Father Raymond J. de Souza
It requires the distance of history to judge properly whether Pope Benedict XVI was right to abdicate in February 2013. Five years is not sufficient distance. A judgment about the wisdom of the abdication need not involve a judgment on the pontificate of Pope Francis, but in practice it is difficult to separate the two.
Nonetheless, on the fifth anniversary there is an opportunity to reflect more soberly than was the case immediately after the earthquake of Feb. 11, 2013, when Benedict concluded a routine ceremony for the canonization of saints with the announcement that he would abdicate at the end of that same month.

Vatican denies rumors that Benedict XVI has degenerative nerve disorder
Vatican City, Feb 15, 2018 / 01:33 pm
(CNA/EWTN News).-
After rumors spread in German media that Benedict XVI has a paralyzing nerve disease, the Vatican debunked the story, saying the retired Pope is experiencing nothing more than the normal aches and pains of aging
.
“The recent news of a paralyzing or degenerative illness are false,” the Vatican said Feb. 15.
The statement was in response to a story published in German tabloid Neue Post Feb. 14, which quoted Benedict’s older brother Georg Ratzinger as saying that the Pope Emeritus had a degenerative nerve disease which left him increasingly in need of a wheelchair.
