Nikita Levy, Gynecologist, Filmed And Photographed Underage Patients Before Killing Himself: Police
February 20, 2013

The Maryland gynecologist was a little too "eager" to see young patients, according to ABC News sources. It wasn't until investigators reportedly found inappropriate photos and videos and Levy killed himself that the pieces fell into place.

Levy was found dead in an apparent suicide in his Towson home this week, CBS News reports. Detectives found more photos and videos of Levy's patients in his home, though parents may never get the answers they wanted.

"Detectives have a lot of material that they have to comb through, servers and servers and hard drives and hard drives worth of information that needs to be forensically analyzed," Baltimore police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told ABC.

Nearly 100 women -- all patients of the Johns Hopkins gynecologist -- have come forward since the finding, fearing that they may be victims themselves, The Baltimore Sun reports. Police said Tuesday that some of the images were recorded using a secret camera inside a pen.

Nikita Levy, former Maryland gynecologist accused of recording patients, found dead
February 20, 2013

(CBS) TOWSON, Md. - A former gynecologist took his own life while facing allegations he took pictures and video of his patients without their knowledge, CBS Baltimore reports.

Dr. Nikita Levy was found dead in his Towson home on Monday.

Johns Hopkins Hospital security was alerted on Feb. 4 by another staff member that Levy was using personal video equipment to tape his patients, the station reports. Police are now trying to determine if others were involved.

A spokesperson for Johns Hopkins says Levy was let go from the staff earlier this month, CBS Baltimore reports. Johns Hopkins has reportedly launched their own investigation into the matter.

Prior to Levy's death, he reportedly sent a letter to his patients notifying them that he had left the facility. He failed to say why.

Baltimore Police have reportedly contacted some of the victims, but they say the numbers coming forward could be huge. Levy saw around 1,000 patients since getting his medical license in 1988.

Accomplices In Levy Recording? Police Not Ruling It Out
February 20, 2013

Police are getting help from federal investigators as they plow through what they are calling an "extraordinary amount" of evidence seized at the home of the Hopkins gynecologist found dead on Monday.

There is the possibility that there may have been accomplices, but city police are saying that the evidence does not point to that.  For now.

City police said they also found "multiple cameras" in an exam room at the East Baltimore clinic where Dr. Nikita Levy had worked for more than 20 years.

One camera also was hidden inside a pen.  But there may have been many.

Levy was found dead in his Towson home earlier this week.   He was fired by Johns Hopkins soon after a colleague reported possible video and photography of patients without consent.

City police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi described the possible existence of accomplices "unlikely,"  but said investigators have not ruled it out.

Police say fired Johns Hopkins doc used pencam to take secret photos of patients

February 20, 2013

Raising the prospect of a major privacy issue for a leading medical center, authorities say a gynecologist and obstetrician believed to have committed suicide earlier this month after being fired by Johns Hopkins used personal equipment to take secret photos and videotapes of his patients.

A sex crime investigation is being conducted by Baltimore police after the death of Dr. Nikita Levy, and they are seeking to interview his patients from the past 20 years, the Baltimore Sun reports. The cause of Levy's death also is under investigation, although some media accounts say a note was found.

A separate investigation concerning the photos is being conducted by Johns Hopkins. The newspaper says a colleague of Levy's reported the allegations to Hopkins officials on Feb. 4, and the hospital fired him on Feb. 8. In a written statement issued on Monday, the hospital apologized for what it called an "intolerable" invasion of privacy.

This looks like it could be a lot bigger than just Dr. Nikita Levy taking photos for himself. I've seen a couple of articles out of a handful that indicate there may have been photos of underage females taken, besides photos of adult women.  And now I'm seeing a bit about what may or may not be online.  Was Levy sharing photos of his underage patients online?   And here we go again.  Who knew about this?! The article indicates there will be investigations concerning former Baltimore City Police Commissioner Fred Bealefeld, as well as state regulators, city police and the city state’s attorney.  And yep, Jerry Sandusky and the Catholic Church  sex abuse scandals come to mind.

Police Turn Over Evidence In Levy Case To FBI
March 1, 2013

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said Friday that officers gave the evidence to the FBI on Thursday. Federal agents will conduct a preliminary analysis and within four to six weeks will be able to tell if Dr. Nikita Levy was involved with child pornography and what images — if any — were online.

Levy, 54, used personal equipment, including a camera pen, to take pictures and videos of his patients. He killed himself on Feb. 18.
The investigation into how Levy secretly videotaped perhaps thousands of his patients — and who knew about it — now includes former Baltimore City Police Commissioner Fred Bealefeld, as well as state regulators, city police and the city state’s attorney.

Hopkins confirms former commissioner Bealefeld will be part of its internal investigation. They won’t say his exact role and Bealefeld isn’t talking, but his involvement–just seven months removed from his post–concerns forensic investigator Tom Mauriello.

“The opposition attorneys are going to use that, and that’s going to cloud the investigation–no matter what he comes up with,” Mauriello said. “It doesn’t make sense to me. There are issues of bias and everything else that are natural. Some of the behavior and activities appear to have happened when he was in fact commissioner.”

Mauriello likens the widespread, complex investigation into Dr. Levy–involving issues of trust and a powerful institution–to that of former Penn State Coach Jerry Sandusky and the Catholic sex abuse scandal.

“It’s a question of what was reported and what wasn’t reported, and you never really know what that was,” he said.

I found the video interesting.

$190M payout over gynecologist who secretly recorded patients
July 21, 2014

ohns Hopkins, one of the world's most prestigious medical institutions, has agreed to pay $190 million to settle claims by thousands of women against a gynecologist who used a tiny camera to surreptitiously make hundreds of videos and photos of patients.

But an attorney for the Baltimore medical center on Monday described Nikita Levy as "a rogue employee'' and said Hopkins should not be blamed for his actions.

"Just because he was an employee doesn't make Johns Hopkins responsible for what he did,'' the lawyer, Don DeVries, said at a joint news conference with the plaintiffs' lawyers. He said Hopkins agreed to settle because "we are trying to find a balance between the patients … and the interests of Johns Hopkins to provide top quality care'' in the future.

But one of the plaintiffs' lawyers, Jonathan Schochor, said that Levy was acting in his capacity as a physician and that the hospital was obligated to supervise him and should have known what he was doing.

Although psychological profiling consultants suggested possibilities for why Levy might have done what he did, Schochor said, "We were given no information about what actually motivated him.''

Members of the plaintiffs' legal team said there was no evidence Levy conspired with others or shared the images, or that the hospital knew that he was secretly recording patients.

Levy was fired last year after a female co-worker came forward with her suspicions. He was forced to turn over the pen-like camera he'd used, and he committed suicide days later. Investigators discovered about 1,200 videos and 140 images stored on computer servers in his home.

The settlement approved by a judge, while preliminary, is one of the largest on record in the U.S. involving sexual misconduct by a physician.

Attorneys said about 8,500 women have signed on to the class-action lawsuit. They will be given a chance to testify before the judge about the settlement on Sept. 19. If the judge approves the settlement, each woman will be interviewed by a forensic psychologist to determine her compensation. Any woman who was examined privately by Levy is eligible to enroll in the class action; no other evidence is necessary.

Plaintiffs' lawyers said thousands of women were traumatized, even though their faces were not visible in the images and investigators were unable to positively establish which patients were recorded, or how many.

DeVries said Hopkins' insurance would cover the settlement. In a statement, the medical center said "one individual does not define Johns Hopkins."

Some female patients said they were inappropriately touched and verbally abused by Levy, according to Schochor. In some cases, women said they were regularly summoned to Levy's office for unnecessary pelvic exams.

Myra James, 67, had been going to him for annual exams for 20 years. Since his misconduct became public, she told the Associated Press, she hasn't seen a gynecologist.
