Osama bin Laden's Son-in-Law Captured, Brought to US
March 7, 2013

In a secret operation, a man described by a U.S. Congressman as the son-in-law of Osama bin Laden has been brought to the United States to stand trial after being captured in Turkey, according to a law enforcement official.

The man, Sualiman Abu Ghaith, was quietly brought to the American homeland -- which he once said was the "heart of apostasy" -- last week by federal officials. Turkish media previously reported Ghaith was captured in Ankara in a joint operation by the CIA and Turkish intelligence last month and was later deported to Jordan. Investigators have been conducting interviews with him since his arrival in the U.S. and he is expected to appear in a New York court Friday, the law enforcement official said.

In a widely circulated video appeared online shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, Abu Ghaith said, "My beloved, we carried out what God ordered us to. We didn't make anything up, we only applied what God ordered us to."

Referring to the U.S. as the "head of apostasy" he said, "We have been able to hit it in the heart of its homeland."

In another video around the same time, Ghaith is seen briefly with bin Laden, who was killed in a U.S. Navy SEAL raid in Pakistan in May 2011. In that video, Ghaith called on the "nation of Islam" to choose the right path in the "decisive battle between apostasy and faith."

Bin Laden's son-in-law, once al Qaeda's 'mouthpiece,' held by U.S.
March 7, 2013

(CNN) -- Osama bin Laden's son-in-law, who has served as an al Qaeda spokesman, was captured and has been brought to the United States, two administration officials and a federal law enforcement official said Thursday.
Sulaiman Abu Ghaith is scheduled to be arraigned at 10 a.m. ET Friday in a federal courtroom in New York.
Ghaith has been charged in a federal indictment with conspiracy to kill U.S. nationals, the U.S. Department of Justice announced.

The U.S. Treasury Department has described Abu Ghaith as "the official spokesman of al Qaeda since his appointment to that position after the attacks of September 11, 2001."
He appeared in videos as "the mouthpiece of bin Laden," the department said.

I hope he spends the rest of his days behind bars.  A sentence of 15 years would be grossly inadequate in light of his crimes.  He should be sentenced to life in prison, with life being much more than any victims he may have.  Shame on him for trying to use religion for his defense.  JMHO

Bin Laden spokesman faces possible life term

NEW YORK (AP) - Osama bin Laden's son-in-law is in a New York courtroom, waiting to hear whether he will face life in prison or something less after his conviction in his terrorism case.

Sulaiman Abu Ghaith (SOO'-lay-mahn AH'-boo GAYTH) was convicted in March on charges he conspired to kill Americans in his role as a spokesman for al-Qaida.

Lawyers were making arguments Tuesday in federal court in Manhattan. Prosecutors want life. His lawyer says 15 years is adequate. After arguments, Judge Lewis Kaplan was to announce the sentence.

The Kuwaiti imam became the voice of al-Qaida recruitment videotapes after the Sept. 11 attacks. He warned in one that "the storm of planes" wouldn't stop.

Abu Ghaith testified at trial that his role was strictly religious.

Bin Laden son-in-law sentenced to life in U.S. prison
September 23, 2014

A Manhattan federal jury in March found the Kuwaiti-born 48-year-old guilty of conspiring to kill Americans, conspiring to provide material support for terrorists and providing such support, after a trial that offered a rare glimpse of bin Laden in the hours following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan imposed the sentence minutes after Abu Ghaith made a statement in Arabic, quoting the Koran and declaring he would not ask for mercy from anyone but God.

"Today, and at the same moment where you are shackling my hands and intend to bury me alive, you are at the same time unleashing the hands of hundreds of Muslim youths," the former imam said through an interpreter. "And you are removing the dust of their minds, and they will join the rally of the free men."

In response, Kaplan noted Abu Ghaith had expressed no remorse, and cited a video in which Abu Ghaith appeared amused by al Qaeda's Sept. 11 attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people in the United States.

"You, sir, in my assessment, are committed to doing everything you can to assist al Qaeda in its mission to kill Americans," Kaplan said.

Prosecutors had painted Abu Ghaith as a charismatic spokesman for al Qaeda in the days and weeks after the attacks, saying he recorded inflammatory videos the group could use to recruit new members.

The government also contended that one October 2001 video, in which Abu Ghaith promised the "storm of airplanes will not stop," indicated he knew beforehand of an ultimately unsuccessful attempt to detonate a shoe bomb aboard a jetliner in December 2001 by Briton Richard Reid.

"Suleiman Abu Ghaith served at the very highest levels of al Qaeda," Assistant U.S. Attorney John Cronan told the court. "Abu Ghaith was a proud participant in al Qaeda's conspiracy to kill Americans. And he was someone Osama bin Laden relied on heavily," Cronan said.

Abu Ghaith's lawyer, Stanley Cohen, argued his client was guilty only of delivering fiery speeches and that there was not a "scintilla of evidence" to connect him with any specific al Qaeda plots.

Abu Ghaith took the stand in his own defense, where he described meeting bin Laden in an Afghan cave the evening of Sept. 11. He said bin Laden told him, "We are the ones who did it."

The next day, he said, he recorded his first video at bin Laden's request. However, he denied ever becoming a member of al Qaeda and said his intention was not to speak or recruit for the group.

Abu Ghaith would marry bin Laden's daughter Fatima years later, a fact the jury was not permitted to hear.
