Elderly woman found slain in Dallas home
March 10, 2013

DALLAS — An elderly woman who hadn't been seen since Thursday was found dead in her East Dallas home on Saturday.
Now police are asking for help after determining that she was murdered.
The victim, 79-year-old Avanell Cowgill, had lived in the home in the 11300 block of Earlywood Drive for more than 50 years. Officers who went to check on her welfare Saturday found the back door was open and Cowgill was dead inside.
Police had been called to the address after neighbors saw newspapers piling up in the front yard.

Investigators said there were signs that the killer had stolen things from the residence, but they weren't yet sure what was taken, or when Cowgill was killed.
Anyone with information about this case or who has observed suspicious activity in the neighborhood southwest of Northwest Highway and Jupiter Road is urged to contact Dallas police at 214-671-3647.
Oak Farms Dairy has offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and indictment of the responsible party.

Who Would Kill An Elderly Dallas Woman?
March 11, 2013

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Neighbors along Earlywood Drive in Dallas kept asking the same question: Why would anyone murder 79-year-old Avanell Cowgill?

Police in Dallas were called to the Cowgill’s home near Northwest Highway and Jupiter Road on Saturday night for a welfare check. At her home, an officer discovered her back door open and Cowgill murdered inside. Investigators said that it appears as if someone broke into her home, possibly to commit burglary, and, during a struggle with the 79-year-old widow, killed her.

While investigators looked for clues inside of her east Dallas home on Sunday morning, Cowgill should have been on her way to church. She, along with her late husband, had attended Casa Linda United Methodist Church since it opened in 1951. Cowgill was there every Sunday, along with every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. “She was the first person to open the building on Sunday and, if you needed anything, she was the first person to say, ‘I can do it,’” said Rev. David Rangel.

Investigators called this slaying particularly brutal. They aren't releasing a motive, or saying whether anything was taken from the residence.
A reward for information leading to Cowgill's killer has grown to $15,000.

Dallas police call Avanell Cowgill's killing "a violent act" and "a brutal murder"

March 13, 2013

Dallas police want the public's help in finding several people seen at various stores using the credit cards of a 79-year-old woman killed in her East Dallas home last week.

Avanell Cowgill's daughter asked police on Saturday to check on her. Officers went to the home in the 11300 block of Earlywood Drive in East Dallas and found the back door open and Cowgill dead inside the home.

Cowgill left church at approximately 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Police said she went to a store, went home and may have been killed that night.

On Tuesday, Dallas homicide detectives released photos of two people seen at various stores on Friday, using Cowgill's credit cards.

The first person is a white man who is taller than 6 feet and weighs about 250 pounds. Police said he changes his appearance from one store to another and tries to avoid store security cameras.

In one photo, he is seen wearing a blue jeans, white shoes, a gray windbreaker and a baseball cap with a "B" on the front. Police say the same man was seen at a second store wearing blue jeans, white shoes, a brown work jacket with a hood and a black-and-red baseball cap with a "B" on the front.

The second person is a white man who is 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs about 160 pounds. He was seen wearing a red, yellow and black horizontal striped shirt.

Dallas police released a photo of the car the two men were seen driving, it is an older model silver four-door compact car missing a back right hubcap.

Police also released a YouTube video from various angles of a store surveillance camera:

Funeral Friday for Avanell Cowgill; Investigation Continues
March 15, 2013

Friday morning family and friends are gathering for the funeral of 79-year-old murder victim, Avanell Cowgill.

Police said the widow was found brutally murdered in her East Dallas home last weekend.

Cowgill’s friends and neighbors are still searching for answers and hope pictures released by the police of men using her credit cards provide new leads.

Watson is relieved to see the new Wal-Mart store surveillance video released by the Dallas police Thursday afternoon. Investigators are trying to track down a man recorded in the video that they said used Cowgill’s credit card for a shopping spree on March 8, the day before she was discovered murdered in her home.
 ::snipping2::
Police also released pictures from an ATM taken March 7. In the photos, a man can be seen using Cowgill’s cards at about 11 p.m., some 7 hours after Cowgill had left church and was last seen alive.

Police aren’t calling the men in the videos killers, but say they want to talk to the men about how they got Cowgill’s cards.

Earlier in the week, homicide detectives released other surveillance pictures from various stores.  In one, the man is wearing the same clothes that were worn in Wal-Mart while in others he is in other clothing.  He is described as 6 feet tall and weighing about 250 lbs.

There are also pictures of a second man, with a smaller build, standing about 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing about 160 lbs.
Police said the men were also seen driving an older, silver 4-door compact car that is missing a back right hubcap.

“Whether they were involved in her murder of not, they should still pay the consequences,” said Watson.

Two men arrested for murder of elderly Dallas woman
March 22, 2013, Updated March 23, 2013

 ::snipping2::

Dallas police announced at a press conference Friday night they believe David Herron, 29, and Daniel Brooks, 28, killed 79-year-old Avanell Cowgill on March 7 during a home robbery.

Investigators linked the men to the murder through surveillance video that they say shows the men using Cowgill's stolen credit cards at a Walmart and later at an ATM. Police said the men purchased an electronic device from the Walmart, then found where the device had been resold.

Herron and Brooks were already in a Richardson jail for unrelated theft charges, which they were arrested for on March 20.

The men are facing capital murder charges in Dallas, and their bonds have been set at $1 million each.

Man Gets Life in Prison for Killing 79-Year-Old Woman
By Texas Ranger Rudy Flores-May 2015

In March 2013, 79-year-old Lillie Avanell Cowgill was beaten and strangled in her East Dallas home.

The Dallas Police Department conducted the investigation and identified suspects after tracking activity on the victim’s stolen cards and reviewing surveillance footage.

Daniel Brooks, 29, was arrested and indicted for Capital Murder.

In June 2014, Daniel Brooks was tried and the jury deadlocked, 8-4, for acquittal. Shortly after the mistrial, I had the good fortunate of being at the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office on an unrelated matter.

I was asked to inspect some physical evidence related to the case. Ultimately, I conducted an analysis of the bloodstains on the evidence and was able provide information which assisted the DA in obtaining a new Capital Murder indictment on Daniel Brooks.

This week, Daniel Brooks was re-tried for the Capital Murder and found guilty. The jury only took 90 minutes to convict him. Brooks was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

A co-defendant will be tried for his role in the crime later this year.
