Pope at Palm Sunday Mass: With Jesus, it is never too late
10 April 2022, 11:29

Presiding over the liturgy of Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion, Pope Francis encourages us to journey toward Easter with God's forgiveness, and recalls that as Christ gazes upon "our violent and tormented world," Jesus never tires of repeating: "Father forgive them for they know not what they do."
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

With Jesus, it is never too late. With Him, things are never over.

Pope Francis underscored this during his homily on Palm Sunday, insisting that no matter how dire a situation may be, it is never too late to begin again since the Lord waits for us with His mercy.

The Pope presided over the liturgy of Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion in St. Peter's Square, marking the first time since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic that the Holy Father could lead the celebration among numerous masked faithful outdoors, rather than from inside St. Peter's Basilica with very limited numbers permitted to protect against contagion.

New US Ambassador to Holy See presents credentials to Pope
11 April 2022, 12:05

Pope Francis received the credential letters of Joseph Simon Donnelly as the new Ambassador of the United States of America to the Holy See in the Vatican on Monday.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

The new U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See, Joseph Simon Donnelly, of Indiana, presented his credential letters to Pope Francis on Monday morning in the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace.

The Ambassador’s main task will be to liaise between the Holy See and the U.S. Government. Diplomatic relations between the Holy See and the United States of America were established between Pope St. John Paul II and U.S. President Ronald Reagan on 10 January, 1984.

Ambassador Donnelly was appointed to serve as the 12th U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See on 24 January and was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in February 2022.

Way of the Cross: Families share pain of loss and horrors of war
11 April 2022, 12:09

The Vatican releases the meditations for the Good Friday Way of the Cross at Rome’s Colosseum, with 15 families offering their perspectives on the pain life can bring and the horrors of war.
By Devin Watkins

Complaints, uncertainties, needs, wounds, but also courage, forgiveness, prayers, and hope.

These themes related to the life of every family across the globe form the basis of the meditations written for the Via Crucis which Pope Francis presides over on Good Friday at the Colosseum in Rome.

Fifteen families linked to Catholic volunteer associations and communities wrote the meditations, since this year marks the Amoris Laetitia Family Year celebrating the fifth anniversary of the Pope’s Apostolic Exhortation.

Progression of family life

The order of the meditations partially reflects the progression of family life, moving from the financial difficulties of young couples to the trials of parenthood and from the pain of loss to extraordinarily difficult situations like war.

How to obtain a plenary indulgence during Holy Week 2022
By CNA Staff
CNA Staff, Apr 11, 2022 / 10:43 am

A plenary indulgence is a grace granted by the Catholic Church through the merits of Jesus Christ, Mary and all the saints to remove the temporal punishment due to sin.

The indulgence applies to sins already forgiven. A plenary indulgence cleanses the soul as if the person had just been baptized.

A plenary indulgence can be obtained during Holy Week for oneself or for a deceased person if one of the following works established by the Church is performed.

Holy Thursday - April 14, 2022

1. If during the solemn reservation of the Blessed Sacrament (typically on a side altar), which follows the Mass of the Lord's Supper, you recite or sing the Eucharistic hymn “Tantum Ergo.”

2. If you adore the solemnly reserved Blessed Sacrament for a half hour.

An ambulance fitted with Vatican number plates is traveling the roads of war-ravaged Ukraine. For some, who see it passing by, it may appear as a symbol of hope for normality. What is certain, is that it is a sign of Pope Francis’ closeness.

Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, the Papal Almoner, is in Ukraine for the third time since the war began. He is personally driving the ambulance.

United with the Pope

"The purpose of this trip” Cardinal Krajewski told Vatican Media, “is to be close to a people who suffer, but also to pray and to celebrate Holy Week."

On Tuesday morning the Cardinal presided over the Chrism Mass in the Cathedral of Lviv. After a brief meeting with Latin Archbishop of Lviv, Mieczyslaw Mokrzycki, and with the Greek-Catholic Archbishop Ihor Vozniak, he continued on his journey to Kyiv.

"I will celebrate the Easter Triduum there,” he said, “together with the various Churches, with the people who suffer but who, in this Holy Week, want to get to sing: 'Alleluia, Christ is risen.'"

Pope at Audience: War is an outrage and a blasphemy

Pope Francis denounces the worldly logic of power and violence, explaining that Jesus brings true peace through meekness and the Cross.
By Christopher Wells

At his weekly General Audience, Pope Francis once again denounced “the armed aggression of these days” as “an outrage against God.”

The way of meekness and the Cross

The Holy Father began his reflection by focusing on the feast of Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week, which commemorates the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, “welcomed as the Messiah.” Pope Francis said the crowds that acclaimed Him expected Jesus to bring peace as a powerful liberator, or by initiating an era of social justice.

Jesus, however, does not rise to their expectations, but instead enters Jerusalem on a donkey: Jesus, the Pope said, brings peace “through meekness and mildness, symbolized by the tethered colt on which no one had ever sat.”

Here’s what Pope Francis says about World War III in a new book
By Courtney Mares
Vatican City, Apr 13, 2022 / 06:45 am

In the introduction to a new book, Pope Francis says that the world is moving toward World War III as if it were unavoidable, but it is not inevitable.

The pope is listed as the author of the book, “Against War: The Courage to Build Peace,” which will be published in Italian on April 14.

In his introduction to the 192-page volume, the pope addresses the specter of nuclear war “looming over Europe” in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“And so, step by step, we are moving towards catastrophe. Piece by piece the world risks becoming the theater of a unique Third World War,” the pope writes in the introduction published by Vatican News on April 13.

"Against War: The Courage to Build Peace" - a book by Pope Francis - hits Italian bookshelves and the newspaper "Corriere della Sera" on Thursday, and presents dialogue as a political art, and the artisanal construction of peace and disarmament as a strategic choice. Why the pope’s representative in Kyiv is fighting ‘fake news’
By Andrea Gagliarducci
Rome Newsroom, Apr 13, 2022 / 07:20 am

Earlier this month, the Vatican’s embassy in Ukraine published a post “fact-checking” recent claims about the Holy See. It is likely to be the first in a series.

The initiative — launched by Archbishop Visvaldas Kulbokas, the apostolic nuncio to Ukraine — was approved by the Vatican Secretariat of State. Its purpose is to clarify the Holy See’s positions if they are subject to manipulation and to rebut “fake news.”

The April 8 post focused on two points. The first was to clarify the position of Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, on the issue of shipping weapons to Ukraine.

The second was to deny claims — spread mainly in the Ukrainian blogosphere — that Russian President Vladimir Putin has accounts at the Institute for the Works of Religion (the IOR, or “Vatican bank”).

Pope Francis visits Benedict XVI at the Vatican's Mater Ecclesiae Monastery ahead of Easter and the Pope Emeritus's 95th birthday on Holy Saturday.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Pope Francis made a special visit to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI on Wednesday afternoon to offer his best wishes for Easter and for his 95th birthday.

According to a brief statement released by Director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, the Holy Father visited the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery residence in the Vatican where Benedict resides.

Throughout his pontificate, Pope Francis has visited Benedict for Easter, interrupted only due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"After a brief and affectionate conversation, and after praying together, Pope Francis returned to Casa Santa Marta," said Mr. Bruni.

Benedict XVI will celebrate his 95th birthday on Holy Saturday, 16 April.

Pope at Chrism Mass: Priests must fix eyes on Jesus, cast aside hidden idols
14 April 2022, 10:52

In his homily at the Chrism Mass on the morning of Holy Thursday, Pope Francis invites priests to cultivate the grace of fixing their gaze on Jesus, so that they may better serve God and their people.
By Christopher Wells

Being a priest is a very great grace, Pope Francis told priests on Holy Thursday, while reminding them it is a grace that is primarily for the good of the Christian faithful rather than for priests themselves.

“Our people deserve and need” to be served by priests with clear consciences, the Pope said, inviting the gathered clergy to be faithful to God, by allowing themselves to be loved and forgiven by Him.

Pope Francis celebrates Mass of the Lord’s Supper at prison near Rome
14 April 2022, 19:27

Pope Francis presides over the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday at a new penitentiary complex in the port city of Civitavecchia, north of Rome, where we he washed the feet of 12 inmates.
Vatican News staff writer

Pope Francis presided over the Holy Thursday liturgy In Coena Domini or "Mass of the Lord's Supper," that commemorates the institution of the Holy Eucharist, with inmates housed at the new penitentiary complex of Civitavecchia, a port city north of Rome. He arrived just before 4 pm and was welcomed by the prison authorities who took him to the institution's Chapel where he celebrated the Mass. The celebration took place with some of the inmates, security personnel, prison staff and authorities, including Italy's Minister of Justice.

Service and humility

The Director of the Vatican's Press Office, Matteo Bruni, said in statement that Pope Francis gave a homily where he spoke about the sign of the washing of the feet, part of the liturgy in this celebration, as something seen as "a strange thing" in this world, when we read in the Gospels about "Jesus washing the feet of the traitor, the one who betrayed him." The Pope added that, "Jesus teaches us this, simply, that you must wash each other's feet ... we serve one another, without expecting a return: how beautiful it would be if it were possible to do this every day and to all people."

Pope prays for victims of typhoon in the Philippines
14 April 2022, 11:54

Pope Francis conveys his prayers and solidarity to the Philippine people affected by Typhoon Megi which so far has claimed 80 lives and displaced tens of thousands of people
By Lisa Zengarini

Philippine authorities have confirmed that the death toll from Typhoon Megi has risen to 80, with many still missing and feared dead, while hundreds of thousands of others remain displaced.

Landslides and floods

Many of the deaths occurred in landslides and floods caused when the tropical storm (locally known as Agaton) made landfall on April 10, hitting the eastern and southern coasts of the Philippines with winds of up to 65 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 80 kph. Among the worst affected regions are Western Visayas, Eastern Visayas and Caraga.

Prayers for the dead, injured and displaced

In a telegram signed by the Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Pope Francis expressed solidarity with all those suffering the consequences of the storm. He also assured his “prayers for the dead, injured, and displaced as well as those engaged in recovery efforts”, and  “as a sign of his spiritual closeness” invoked upon all the Filipino people “God’s blessings of strength and peace”.

Pope to Maltese Jesuits: Vocation of the Church is to evangelize
14 April 2022, 10:00

During his recent Apostolic Journey to Malta, Pope Francis met with the Jesuits working in the Mediterranean island nation, and engaged them in conversation on issues ranging from climate change, the Church’s synodal journey, and the challenge of migration.
By Benedict Mayaki, SJ

Pope Francis’ 36th Apostolic Journey abroad saw him visit the Mediterranean island of Malta from 2 – 3 April. The two-day trip, themed “They showed us unusual kindness” drew attention to the plight of migrants who cross the Mediterranean, and promoted evangelization in the country.

Among the activities on the Holy Father’s schedule during the trip was a meeting with the members of the Society of Jesus in the country, who assembled at the Nunciature on the morning of 3 April. Pope Francis engaged the 38 Jesuits present in spontaneous conversation, responding to their questions about the Church and the world.

The Church of the future

The Holy Father responded to a question about the future of the Church and the synodal journey.

Saying that his predecessor Benedict XVI was a “prophet of this Church of the future”, Pope Francis pointed toward a Church that will become smaller and may lose many privileges, but become humbler, more spiritual and more authentic.

Catholics invited to congratulate Benedict XVI on his 95th birthday
By CNA Staff
Vatican City, Apr 14, 2022 / 02:00 am

Catholics around the world are being invited to congratulate Pope emeritus Benedict XVI on his 95th birthday.

The Tagespost Foundation for Catholic Journalism has created a website to collect the messages, which will then be shown to Benedict XVI.

“I know he is very happy about it,” said Archbishop Georg Gänswein, the private secretary of the pope emeritus, reported CNA Deutsch, CNA’s German-language news partner.

Benedict XVI will celebrate his 95th birthday on April 16, Holy Saturday. He was born Joseph Alois Ratzinger in 1927 in Marktl am Inn, a small Bavarian town not far from Austria, also on a Holy Saturday.

Looking back to his birth in his memoir, published before his election as pope, he wrote: “The fact that the birthday was the last day of Holy Week and the eve of Easter was always noted in the family history, because it was connected with the fact that I was baptized right on the morning of my birthday with the water that had just been consecrated in the ‘Easter Vigil’ celebrated at that time in the morning. To be the first baptized with the new water was considered a significant providential event.”

He continued: “The fact that my life was thus immersed in the Paschal Mystery from the beginning in this way has always filled me with gratitude, for this could only be a sign of blessing.”

“Admittedly — it had not been Easter Sunday, but only Holy Saturday. But the longer I think about it, the more it seems to me to be in keeping with the essence of our human life, which is still waiting for Easter, not yet in full light, but nevertheless confidently moving toward it.”

Pope's Easter wish: Do not lose hope, the real hope, that doesn't disappoint
15 April 2022, 15:00

Pope Francis grants a wide-ranging interview to Italian journalist Lorena Bianchetti of state-run TV station RAI1, and says that, despite the horrific war in Ukraine and other tragedies around the globe, this Easter we must keep our hope, even if it seems unfulfilled in the short-term.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

This Easter, Pope Francis has urged the faithful never to lose hope. "Hope makes you wait, but it never disappoints," he said.

The Holy Father offered this reminder in an interview with Italian journalist Lorena Bianchetti, during a special edition of the 'A Sua Immagine' program of Italian state television channel, RAI1, which aired on Good Friday afternoon in Italy.

Pope at Way of the Cross: ‘Disarm the hand of brother raised against brother'
15 April 2022, 22:52

Pope Francis presides over the Way of the Cross on the evening of Good Friday, with families offering meditations for each of the 14 Stations based on their own experiences of suffering and hope.
By Devin Watkins

The traditional Via Crucis returned on Good Friday evening to the Colosseum in Rome for the first time since 2019, a hiatus of nearly three years.

Pope Francis presided over the event, leading the over 10,000 faithful present in the prayers of the Stations of the Way of the Cross, which follow the events of Jesus’ Passion and death.

Though the roots of the Via Crucis at the Colosseum date back many centuries, the modern-day tradition began in 1964 when Pope St. Paul VI presided over the event. He and subsequent Popes continued the practice each year until the pandemic struck in 2020.

Two families on opposite sides of a war

The Way of the Cross meditations were written by fifteen families associated with Catholic volunteer groups, and explored various aspects of the trials and tribulations facing families across the world.

The highlight of the meditations came in the 13th Station, which saw two women carry the cross together: Albina hails from Russia and Irina from Ukraine.

Instead of the prepared meditation, silence spoke louder than any words.

The two women - friends and both nurses in Rome - held the cross and looked into each other's eyes in a glance that seemed to communicate all the pain of brothers at war and the undying hope of peace and reconciliation.

A moment's silence was observed, and everyone prayed for God's gift of peace

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI turns 95 on Holy Saturday
16 April 2022, 12:48

As Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI turns 95 years old on Holy Saturday, his personal secretary, Archbishop Georg Gänswein, grants an interview to Radio Horeb in Munich, and describes the daily life of a man who "has shaped the Church and theology".
By Mario Galgano and Johannes Wieczorek

It was 16 April 1927 - a Holy Saturday - when Joseph Ratzinger, later Pope Benedict XVI, was born in the Bavarian town of Marktl am Inn. This year, too, his birthday falls on the Holy Vigil of Easter.

As Archbishop Georg Gänswein, Benedict XVI's private secretary, points out, his personality has profoundly shaped the Church and theology. "The Pope Emeritus," says Archbishop Gänswein, "is in good spirits. He is of course physically relatively weak and frail, but lucid."

Pope at Easter Vigil: May we see, hear, proclaim that Jesus is Risen
16 April 2022, 21:45

Pope Francis attends the Easter Vigil in St Peter’s Basilica, focusing his homily on how the women of the Gospel help glimpse the "first rays of the dawn of God’s life rising in the darkness of our world," and teach us to see, hear and proclaim the Passover of the Lord from death to life.
By Thaddeus Jones

Pope Francis attended the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday evening in St. Peter's Basilica, filled with 5,500 pilgrims. This celebration is the most solemn and noblest of all Solemnities.

Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, presided over the celebration, while Pope Francis delivered his homily and baptised seven catechumens. The Pope has suffered from knee pain in recent months, something he also mentioned when speaking to journalists recently after his pastoral journey to Malta.
