Pope at Angelus: 'In the Eucharist is Jesus' life given for all of us'
19 June 2022, 12:10

Pope Francis reflects on the Solemnity of Corpus Christi and on how, in the Eucharist, everyone can experience the loving and concrete attention of the Lord.
By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis on Sunday reminded believers that the Lord, who is present in the Eucharist, takes each and everyone of us to heart, cares for us and satisfies our need for nourishment, companionship, consolation.

Addressing pilgrims gathered for the Angelus in St. Peter’s Square, the Pope noted that on this Sunday, 19 June, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ is celebrated in Italy and in other countries.

“Instituted during the Last Supper,” he explained, “the Eucharist was like the destination of a journey along which Jesus had prefigured it through several signs, above all the multiplication of the loaves” narrated in the Gospel according to Luke ( Lk. 9:11b-17).

Pope: 'Never forget plight of Syria and Christians in Middle East'
20 June 2022, 11:33

Pope Francis greets members of the Synod of Bishops of the Greek Melkite Catholic Church, and urges them to seek to unite Christians in the Middle East, and to always beware of destructive "chatter".
By Francesca Merlo

Pope Francis on Monday greeted participants in the Synod of Bishops of the Patriarchal Church of Antioch of the Greek Melkites, and especially thanked Patriarch Youssef Absi of Antioch.

The Holy Father opened his discourse by noting the bishops asked to celebrate their annual convocation in Rome, at the tombs of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul.

"We need their intercession," said the Pope, "so that even in our time....the Christian community may have the courage to bear witness to the name of Christ, author and perfecter of our faith."

Pope welcomes French translation of book on Congolese Missal
20 June 2022, 14:03

Pope Francis writes the preface to the French translation of the book “Pope Francis and the Roman Missal for Dioceses in Zaire”, written by Sister Rita Mboshu Kongo and edited by the Vatican Publishing House.
By Lisa Zengarini

Pope Francis has penned the preface for a French translation of a book by a Congolese nun on the Missal for the Zaire Usage of the Roman Rite, which was presented on Monday in the Vatican.

The Missal for use in former Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo - DRC) was introduced after the Second Vatican Council to adapt the Roman liturgy to the Congolese language and culture, as instructed by the Constitution “Sacrosanctum Concilium” on the Sacred Liturgy (1963).

The Author

Titled “Le Pape François et le Missel Roman pour les dioceses du Zaïre” (“Pope Francis and the Roman Missal for Dioceses in Zaire”), the book was written by Sister Rita Mboshu Kongo, and edited by the Vatican Publishing House (LEV).

The publication comes in the context of the Pope Francis’ now-postponed Apostolic Journey to the African country in early July, which had to be rescheduled because of his ongoing knee pain.

Only “inculturated” Roman Missal since Vatican II

In his preface, Pope Francis welcomes the book, highlighting the “inestimable contribution of the liturgy, ‘source and summit of the Church's activity’, in the transmission of the faith” the Congolese people have inherited from their ancestors.

He further remarks that the Missel Romain pour les Diocèses du Zaïre is the only “inculturated” Roman missal born of the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council.

“The Congolese rite of the Eucharistic celebration is certainly the fruit of missionary preaching under the African sun and which was collected at dawn. In its triple fidelity to the faith and to the apostolic tradition, to the intimate nature of the Catholic liturgy itself, and finally to the religious genius and the African and Congolese cultural heritage, the Missel Romain pour les Diocèses du Zaïre is the only 'inculturated' Roman missal, born of the liturgical reform of Vatican II.”

Pope: “Church in the Digital” offers tools for a Church also present online
20 June 2022, 10:52

Pope Francis pens the preface for “Church in the Digital”, a book edited by Fabio Bolzetta which offers tools and proposals for the Church that is also present in the digital world.
By Benedict Mayaki, SJ

“The difficult period humanity is going through because of the pandemic has made it clear not only that we will come out of this crisis if we come out of it together, but it has made us realize how useful technological tools and social networks can be.”

Pope Francis made that remark in the preface of a new book titled “The Church in the Digital” (La Chiesa nel Digitale), edited by Fabio Bolzetta and published by Tau Editrice.

The book was born from the experience of the Association of Italian Catholic Webmasters (WECA) and offers tools and proposals to discover, reflect upon, and share on social networks the experience of the Church which is also present in the digital world.

Pope Francis encourages Argentine missionaries in their pilgrimage of faith
20 June 2022, 17:00

Pope Francis sends a video message to the Missionary Movement of Francis as the group kicks off a cultural historical walk in honor of Our Lady of Luján.
By Vatican News staff reporter

Pope Francis on Monday sent a video message to the Movimiento Misioneros de Francisco, the Missionary Movement of Francis, on the occasion of the inauguration of the “Negro Manuel' Cultural Historical Walk of the Virgin of Luján" (Paseo Histórico Cultural 'Negro Manuel' de la Virgen de Luján).

In his message, in Spanish, Pope Francis expressed his desire to be close to all those accompanying the missionaries as they inaugurate and bless the Historical Walk.
The Pope recalled that "our longing is to accompany the memory and devotion of Our Lady of Luján to this place, to accompany the patience of 'Negro Manuel'". This walk, he continued, is one that goes "through the history and life of 'Negro Manuel'".

In conclusion, the Pope assured all the missionaries of his closeness and blessing.

Smaller, more low-key World Meeting of Families begins this week in Rome
By Inés San Martín
Jun 20, 2022

ROME — Adapting to the post-pandemic world, the itinerant Catholic festival known as the World Meeting of Families will take place in Rome this week, and the events will be live-streamed around the world.

The event was originally scheduled for 2021, in order to coincide with the fifth anniversary of the publication of Pope Francis’s encyclical on the family, Amoris Laetitia, but was moved to June 22-26, 2022, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pope Francis also requested a change to the usual format, according to the Vatican. Instead of thousands of families flocking to the host city, the WMOF 2022 is by invite only. Participants are primarily representatives of episcopal conferences and ecclesial movements. An estimated 2,000 families will be attending.

The Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life has requested bishops’ conferences include a limited number of married couples and families in their delegations, along with clergy who have focused their ministry towards marriages and families.

The Vatican is strongly encouraging all dioceses to celebrate the World Meeting by gathering families for a customized, local experience of formation, prayer, and fellowship.

The gathering will focus on the theme “Family love: a vocation and a path to holiness” and marks the end of the Amoris Laetitia Family Year. The program is in Rome and includes Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica, talks by lay Catholic couples, family activities, and a live performance by Italian operatic pop trio Il Volo, all of which will be live-streamed.

Pope Francis will participate in three events: The Festival of Families, which will open the gathering on the afternoon of June 22; Mass in St. Peter’s Square on Saturday evening, June 25; and he will address families at the Angelus on Sunday and commission them to share what they have learned with others when they return home. If he upholds tradition, the city and year for the next meeting will be announced at this time.

Pope Francis: A world free of nuclear weapons is necessary and possible
21 June 2022, 13:22

In a message read at the First Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, Pope Francis renews his call for an end to war and to the causes of conflict, and reaffirms that the use, and even possession, of nuclear weapons is immoral.
By Christopher Wells

The “courageous vision” of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons “appears ever more timely,” Pope Francis says in a Message for the First Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). The Treaty, which aims at achieving and maintaining a nuclear-weapons-free world, went into effect in January 2021. To date, 65 states have ratified or acceded to the Treaty, although no nuclear-armed countries have done so.

In his message, which was read by Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Vatican’s Secretary for Relations with States, Pope Francis says that, while speaking of disarmament “may seem paradoxical to many … we need to remain aware of the dangers of short-sighted approaches to national and international security and the risks of proliferation.”

The Pope, therefore, renews his appeal “to silence all weapons and eliminate the causes of conflicts through tireless recourse to negotiations.” He points out that peace and security, in order to be just and lasting, must be universal; and that we must all be responsible – collectively and individually – for “the well-being of our brothers and sisters.”

Security concerns flare after shots fired near St. Peter’s
By Elise Ann Allen
Jun 21, 2022

ROME – Security around the Vatican is on high alert after a renegade vehicle sped erratically towards St. Peter’s Square and broke through police barricades just before the pope’s noontime Angelus address on Sunday.

At around 10 a.m., just two hours before Pope Francis was scheduled to appear for the weekly Angelus, a gray BMW was seen swerving at high speed down the Via della Conciliazione, the main street leading up to St. Peter’s Square.

Police stationed near the square shouted and motioned to the car in an attempt to get it to stop. However, the car continued veering up the street and then turned and drove along the lefthand colonnade, eventually turning into the Piazza Sant’Uffizio, where tourists were lined up doing security checks and stopping at cafés prior to the papal address.

The car apparently drove straight toward a police blockade, prompting one of the officers to shoot at the vehicle’s tires as it came at him and a group of tourists standing nearby.

Pope at Audience: Old age ‘a time to find strength in frailty’
22 June 2022, 09:14

Pope Francis continues his catechesis on the value of old age at the weekly General Audience, and says the elderly should embrace their frailty and helplessness in order to follow and bear witness to Christ.
By Devin Watkins

Focusing his catechesis at the Wednesday General Audience on the conversation Jesus had with Peter at the end of John’s Gospel (21:15-23), Pope Francis reflected on the gradual wasting away of physical strength with age, which he said offers a chance to embark upon a new way to follow Christ.

He noted that Peter’s relationship with Jesus was tender, direct, free, and open, but not melancholic: “a relationship in truth.”

Pope to families: I want the Church to be a Good Samaritan for you
22 June 2022, 20:30

At the Festival of Families opening the World Meeting of Families, Pope Francis invites families to take a “step forward” in order to “change the world and make it a home for all those who need to feel welcomed and accepted.”
By Christopher Wells

The Tenth World Meeting of Families opened on Wednesday night, with a Festival of Families celebrated in the presence of Pope Francis.

This year’s edition of the Meeting is being held in dioceses and parishes around the world, in a “polycentric and widespread” format that differs from previous years. At the same time, more than two thousand delegates from 120 countries have come to Rome for the five-day event, which aims at highlighting the beauty of marriage and the family in today’s world.

Pope: 'The drama of Cain and Abel unfolding in Ukraine'
23 June 2022, 12:05

Pope Francis addresses representatives of ROACO, a church organization providing aid and assistance to Christians across the Middle East, and invites them to not stop praying, fasting, helping, and working so that the paths of peace may find space in the jungle of conflicts.
By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis did not neglect to issue yet another appeal for war-stricken Ukraine on Thursday, calling for prayers, fasting, and work “so that the paths of peace may find space in the jungle of conflicts.”

Pope: Resist fear spread by organized crime with healthy, hopeful roots
23 June 2022, 12:44

Pope Francis stresses the importance of protecting the weak and promoting legality in society, during an audience with members of the Anti-Mafia Investigation Directorate and the Pontifical International Marian Academy.
By Benedict Mayaki, SJ

“I am pleased to meet you today and to share, together with all those who are part of the institutions you represent and your families, the 30th anniversary of your work in the service of the people,” said Pope Francis as he greeted the members of the Pontifical International Marian Academy and the Anti-Mafia Investigation Directorate (DIA) while receiving them in audience on Thursday in the Vatican.

In his prepared remarks, the Pope said fraternal coexistence and social friendship are possible where there are “houses” that implement the “pact between generations” by “preserving the healthy roots of those who have believed and believe in the beauty of being together that develops in dialogue, kindness and support for justice for all.”

It is thanks to these “houses”, Pope Francis insisted, that it is possible to build “a large family open to the common good, living up to the spread of a culture of legality, respect and safety of people and the environment.”

23 June 2022, 16:05

The Holy See Press Office releases the programme for Pope Francis’ Apostolic Journey to Canada, due to take place on 24-29 July.
By Vatican News staff reporter

With just over one month to go before the Pope is scheduled to depart for his Apostolic Journey to Canada, the Vatican Press Office on Thursday released details of the visit.

The Pope is set to depart Rome’s Fiumicino Airport on the morning of Sunday, 24 July, and receive an official welcome to Canada at Edmonton International Airport that same day.

His first public events start on Monday, 25 July, with a meeting with Indigenous Peoples: First Nations, Métis and Inuit in the city of Maskwacis, around 70 kilometers north of Edmonton.

He then returns to Edmonton to meet in the afternoon with Indigenous Peoples and members of the parish community of the Sacred Heart.

On Tuesday, 26 July, Pope Francis celebrates a public Mass at the Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, before traveling outside the city to Lac Ste. Anne, where he will participate in a pilgrimage and Liturgy of the Word.

Pope makes accessible documents from Pius XII's pontificate on 'Jews'
23 June 2022, 15:00

The website of the Historical Archives of the Secretariat of State makes it possible to consult a documentary series that preserves the requests for help addressed to Pope Pius XII by Jews from all over Europe, after the beginning of the Nazi-Fascist persecution.
By Vatican News

At the request of the Holy Father, as of June 2022, the Historical Archive of the Secretariat of State – Section for Relations with States and International Organizations (ASRS) is allowing universal access to the virtual reproduction of an entire archival series on its website (https://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/secretariat_state/sezione-rapporti-stati/archivio-storico/serie-ebrei/serie-ebrei_it.html). The documentary series, pertaining to Pius XII’s pontificate (open to researchers since 2 March 2020), is titled “Ebrei” (Jews) because its aim is to preserve the petitions for help from Jewish people all over Europe, received by the Pope during the Nazi-Fascist persecutions.

Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade...

US Bishops welcome Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v Wade
24 June 2022, 18:01

The Bishops of the United States thank God for Friday’s Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v Wade, the 1973 ruling “which legalized and normalized the taking of innocent human life” through abortion. In a separate statement, the Pontifical Academy for Life urges governments to enact policies that promote life.
By Christopher Wells

“This is a historic day in the life of our country,” reads a statement from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, in response to the decision by the US Supreme Court to overturn controversial rulings on abortion that had effectively permitted abortion on demand throughout the country.

On Friday, the Court released its decision in the case of Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization, ruling that the US Constitution does not protect a so-called “right” to abortion. Friday’s ruling, which was decided by six judges in favour and three opposed, overturns the decisions in the landmark abortion cases Roe v Wade and Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v Casey, which had guaranteed “abortion on demand” throughout the country.

Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade in historic abortion decision
By Katie Yoder, Shannon Mullen
Washington D.C., Jun 24, 2022 / 08:24 am

The Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade in a historic 6-3 decision released Friday that brings a sudden and dramatic end to nearly a half-century of nationwide legalized abortion in the U.S.

The opinion, in the Mississippi abortion case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, is widely seen as the Supreme Court’s most highly anticipated and consequential ruling since Roe. It not only overturns Roe, the landmark 1973 abortion case, but also Planned Parenthood v. Casey, a 1992 decision that affirmed Roe.

"Abortion presents a profound moral question. The Constitution does not prohibit the citizens of each State from regulating or prohibiting abortion. Roe and Casey arrogated that authority," the opinion states. "We now overrule these decisions and return that authority to the people and their elected representatives." You can read the full opinion below.

Pope at WMOF Mass: ‘God bless and keep all the families of the world'
25 June 2022, 18:45

The 10th World Meeting of Families concludes in Rome with the celebration of the Holy Mass presided by Cardinal Kevin Farrell in the presence of Pope Francis. During the homily, the Pope notes that “the family is the first place where we learn to love.”
By Linda Bordoni

In a world poisoned by the toxins of selfishness, individualism, by a culture of indifference and waste, Pope Francis praised the beauty of the family and said “today more than ever” we feel compelled to defend it.

The Pope was speaking during the homily at a Mass of thanksgiving on Saturday at the end of the 10th World Meeting of Families that has been unfolding in the Vatican on the theme “Family Love: a Vocation and a Path to Holiness”.

The five-day event, organized by the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life, concludes on Sunday when Pope Francis is scheduled to address families during the Angelus.

He described the moments of reflection and sharing, with their rich variety of experiences, plans and dreams, concerns and uncertainties, which have taken place during the World Meeting of Families, describing it as "a kind of vast constellation." He told all those present: “Fathers, mothers and children, grandparents, uncles and aunts, adults and children, young and old,” each bringing a different experience of family, but with one hope and prayer.

“May God bless and keep your families and all the families of the world.”

Pope Francis then reflected on the liturgical readings of the day that all shine light on different aspects of marital and family love.
