Pope Francis expresses closeness to Argentine Vice President
02 September 2022, 14:38

Pope Francis sends a telegram expressing his solidarity to Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, the Vice President of Argentina, after she narrowly survived an attempt on her life.
By Benedict Mayaki, SJ

Pope Francis has sent a message of closeness to the Vice President of Argentina, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, following reports of an attack on her on Thursday.

“Having received the disturbing news of the attack that Your Excellency suffered yesterday afternoon, I wish to express my solidarity and closeness in this delicate moment,” the Pope said in a telegram on Friday.

The Pope prayed that “social harmony and respect for democratic values may prevail in dear Argentina, against all types of violence and aggression.”

Pope: Sense of community is still alive in Kalksburg alumni
02 September 2022, 15:17

Pope Francis meets with an association of former students of the Viennese Kalksburg College, and expresses his hope that their pilgrimage to Rome will renew in them the joy of bearing witness to the Gospel.
By Tiziana Campisi

“May these days bear spiritual fruit for you, so that you may be joyful witnesses of the Gospel in your own environments.”

This is the wish that Pope Francis addressed to the association of former students of the Kollegium Kalksburg in Vienna, who were received in a brief audience in the Clementine Hall of the Apostolic Palace as part of their pilgrimage to Rome. In all, about seventy former students of the College of the Immaculate Virgin are taking part in the pilgrimage.

Founded by the Jesuits in the 19th century, the school has over time been an important educational centre in Austria and today is a state-of-the-art institute.

Formation at the Kollegium Kalksburg focuses on the transmission of Christian values according to the teachings of St Ignatius of Loyola; promotes sport; aims at a comprehensive education; and encourages international exchanges. It also includes classes for primary and secondary education.

Swiss Guard announces new offices in Switzerland
02 September 2022, 11:03

The Pontifical Swiss Guard is expanding its presence in Switzerland through the creation of a new Press and Liaison office for authorities, in order to support the growing number of guards.
By Sophie Peeters

Due to the 2015 increase in the number of Pontifical Swiss Guards needed for service to the Pope and the Vatican, from 110 to 135 men, the need for a more robust annual recruitment process has grown.

The Guards therefore took the decision to establish a public relations office in Switzerland to provide better support for the recruitment process.

The goal of the Press Office is to offer a more direct point of contact for Swiss media and the various partners of the Swiss Guard, such as Pontifical Swiss Guard Foundation, the Barracks Foundation, and the Association of Former Swiss Guards.

The newly-created Liaison Office will represent the interests and concerns of the Swiss Guard Corps to various authorities and politicians.

With the creation of an active public relations network, the Pontifical Swiss Guard hopes a more expansive recruitment process will provide further support to the expansion of the Guard.

UPDATE: Pope Francis praises Knights of Columbus’ Mother Teresa documentary
By CNA Staff
Washington, D.C. Newsroom, Sep 1, 2022 / 13:33 pm

Pope Francis has sent the Knights of Columbus a letter thanking the fraternal order for its new documentary about Mother Teresa.

“Thank you for all the efforts made to capture the life of this saint whose life and testimony have borne much fruit," the Holy Father wrote in the letter, addressed to Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly. Pope Francis added that he hoped the documentary "will do much good to all those who watch it and arouse the desire for holiness.”

The film, "Mother Teresa: No Greater Love," had its world premiere this week at the North American College seminary in Rome on Aug. 29 and the Vatican Film Library on Aug. 31.

In theaters Oct. 3-4, “Mother Teresa: No Greater Love” is airing in more than 960 locations across the United States. Featuring footage from five different continents, the film displays the life of the 20th-century saint and the impact both she and her Missionaries of Charity have had on the people they have served throughout the world.

“The Missionaries of Charity are not publicity seekers,” Naglieri told CNA in an interview Aug. 23. “So, to have the opportunity to highlight the incredible work they do and the way that they live the Gospel, I think this story can positively impact people’s lives and draw them closer to their faith.”

Nine things to know about John Paul I
By Kevin J. Jones
Denver Newsroom, Sep 2, 2022 / 08:00 am

Venerable John Paul I was born Albino Luciani on Oct. 17, 1912 in the town of Canale d'Argordo in northern Italy’s Belluno province. He was the most recent pope to be born in Italy and the first pope to be born in the twentieth century.

He was elected to the papacy on Aug. 26, 1978. He would be dead just a month later. Though his time as Roman Pontiff was brief, he had such an impact that some Catholics have sought his intercession as a saint. The Vatican has recognized a miraculous healing attributed to the first Pope John Paul and he will be beatified this Saturday.

Pope John Paul I: ‘Beatification overcomes fake news about his death’
02 September 2022, 19:24

The Holy See Press Office brings together several key people in the beatification of Pope John Paul I, which takes place in the Vatican on Sunday, to explore his legacy and dispel the suspicions surrounding his unexpected death after the briefest pontificate in modern history.
By Salvatore Cernuzio

He has gone down in history as the Pope of the 34-day pontificate, as the "Smiling Pope" or, even worse, as the Pope whose sudden death led to numerous conspiracy theories.

The imminent beatification helps to better know and even discover the imposing figure of John Paul I, as well as his teaching, spiritual depth, and theological learning.

The Holy See Press Office held a press conference on Friday, which saw Cardinal Beniamino Stella, the postulator of his cause, joined by Stefania Falasca, the deputy postulator; Lina Petri, his niece; Sister Margherita Marin, the first person to find his lifeless body; and, Fr. Juan José Dabusti, an Argentine priest who prayed for the healing of the little girl miraculously cured by the soon-to-be Blessed John Paul I.

Pope: Social and political inertia turn parts of the world into desolate byways
03 September 2022, 12:57

Pope Francis thanks promoters of the “Open Hospitals in Syria” project for their work in the suffering nation, and says domestic and international disputes and the robbing of opportunities are leaving great numbers of marginalized people and nations stranded by the roadside.
By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis reflected on the ongoing suffering of the Syrian people after 12 years of violent conflict, and upheld the commitment and the healthcare offered to all Syrians in need by a Catholic-run initiative called “Open Hospitals in Syria.”

Greeting members of the AVSI Foundation that promotes and runs the initiative, which is supported by various Holy See institutions, as well as the apostolic nuncio to Syria, Cardinal Mario Zenari, the Pope decried the wounds inflicted on the nation.

John Paul I miracle recipient to miss beatification due to broken foot
By Hannah Brockhaus
Rome Newsroom, Sep 3, 2022 / 07:45 am

The young woman who was miraculously healed through the intercession of Pope John Paul I will not attend his beatification in Rome Sunday as planned.

The 22-year-old Candela Giarda explained in a video recorded from Argentina that she had broken her foot and was unable to travel to Italy.

“Unfortunately we can’t go because my foot is broken, but surely at some point we will be able to go to the tomb of John Paul I,” Giarda said in the video, which was shared with CNA’s Spanish language news partner, ACI Prensa.

Giarda was close to death in July 2011 when her mother and local Catholic priest Father José Dabusti prayed for her healing through the intercession of Servant of God Pope John Paul I.

Soon afterward, the 11-year-old Candela began to show signs of improvement, and around six weeks later she was discharged from the hospital in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

After the Vatican investigation into Candela’s healing concluded, Pope Francis recognized the event as a miracle obtained through the intercession of John Paul I on Oct. 13, 2021, paving the way for his beatification.

Pope beatifies John Paul I: May he obtain for us the 'smile of the soul'
04 September 2022, 11:30

Pope Francis presided over the beatification Mass of Pope John Paul I, recalling how his smile communicated the goodness of the Lord. He encouraged everyone to learn from the Lord on how to love without limits and be a Church with a happy, serene and smiling face, that never closes doors.
By Thaddeus Jones

Recalling the example of the "smiling pope," John Paul I, Pope Francis presided over his beatification in Saint Peter's Square on Sunday. The Mass was celebrated by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, with 25 thousand faithful participating in a rainy and later sun-filled square.

In his homily, Pope Francis recalled how in today's Gospel we hear of large crowds following Jesus who gives them a challenging message: to become His disciple means to put aside earthly attachments, to love Him more than his or her own family, to carry the cross we bear in our lives.

05 September 2022, 12:10

Speaking to a delegation of representatives from Caritas Spain on the occasion of its 75th anniversary, Pope Francis praised the nation's Catholic charities saying the name Caritas recalls the essential trait of love we must bear, all created in the image of God's boundless love.
By Thaddeus Jones

Pope Francis jokes that either he or John XXIV will attend World Youth Day next year
By Courtney Mares
Rome Newsroom, Sep 5, 2022 / 07:59 am

With the next World Youth Day less than a year away, Pope Francis has promised that a pope will be in attendance, but joked that it may be “Pope John XXIV.”

Pope Francis told CNN Portugal in a television interview that aired on Sept. 4 that he plans to attend the 2023 World Youth Day, the largest international Catholic youth gathering scheduled to take place in Lisbon next August.

“I plan to go. The pope is going to go — either Francis or John XXIV — but the pope is going,” he joked.

The quip was made after months of speculation in the media that the 85-year-old pope could be close to retirement. Pope Francis told journalists on his return from Canada in July that he is “open” to the possibility of retiring if he discerns that it is God’s will.

Pope Francis did not explain why he guessed his successor could be named Pope John XXIV. He has made this joke several times since he canonized St. Pope John XXIII, the last pope who took the name John, who reigned from 1958 to 1963.

The pope said in the interview that next year’s World Youth Day presents a great opportunity “for the youth from different parts of the world to connect.”

The CNN Portugal interview, recorded on Aug. 11, also touched on clerical abuse and the war in Ukraine. The second half of the interview is scheduled to air on the night of Sept. 5.

In an interview with CNN Portugal broadcast on Monday evening, Pope Francis says the Church is suffering due to sexual abuse and abuse of authority and power by men and women in the Church. The wide-ranging interview also covers topics such as World Youth Day, the importance of dialogue, and Synod on synodality.

Pope Francis emphatically repeated the Church’s commitment to “zero tolerance” when it comes to priests who abuse others, in an interview with CNN Portugal broadcast on Monday evening.

“I want to be very clear about this: Abuse by churchmen and churchwomen — abuse of authority, abuse of power and sexual abuse – is a monstrosity, because the churchman or churchwoman, whether priest, religious man or woman, or layman or laywoman, is called to serve and to create unity, to make grow, and abuse always destroys,” the Pope said.

“Abuse is a tragic reality of all times, but also of our time,” Pope Francis continued, noting that most abuse occurs in the family or in the neighbourhood and is found in sports, clubs, and schools. However, although only a small percentage occurs in the Church, the Pope said that even one case of abuse in the Church is a “monstrosity.”

Pope says Ukraine, Russia trip not currently possible due to knee pain

ROME – In a new interview, Pope Francis laid to rest rumors that a papal visit to Kyiv could happen before his visit to Kazakhstan next week, saying he has been forbidden by doctors from traveling before that due to his ongoing knee troubles.

Speaking to CNN Portugal, the pope said he has spoken to both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin, and that dialogue is key.

“They both visited me here. Not now, before (the war). And I always believe that dialoguing we always goes forward. You know who doesn’t know how to talk? Animals. They are pure instinct. Instead, dialogue is letting go of instinct and listening. Dialogue is difficult,” he said.

Asked whether he still intends to visit Kyiv, Francis said a papal visit to the Ukrainian capital is “up in the air.”

“Now I can’t go because after the trip to Canada, the recovery of my knee suffered a little, and the doctor said that I can’t travel until Kazakhstan,” he said, saying he is “in communication by phone, and I do what I can, and I ask all the people to do what they can.”

“Everyone can do something. And I accompany from my pain and my prayer all that I can,” he said, noting that he has sent several cardinals to Ukraine as well as British Archbishop Paul Gallagher, Vatican secretary for relations with states, “so my presence there is strong.”

Pope Francis spoke to journalist Maria Joao Avillez in an interview conducted at the Vatican Aug. 11 and broadcast in separate parts on Sept. 4 and 5.

In the wide-ranging conversation, the pope touched on next year’s global World Youth Day gathering in Lisbon, the clerical sexual abuse crisis, the role of women in the church, the liturgy, and the ongoing Synod of Bishops on Synodality, among other things.

Pope at Audience: Discernment helps us recognize God in unexpected events
07 September 2022, 09:24

Pope Francis sheds light on the theme of discernment during his catechesis at the weekly General Audience by recalling the example of St. Ignatius of Loyola, and highlights how God works through unforeseen events and mishaps.
By Benedict Mayaki, SJ

Pope Francis continued his cycle of reflections on the theme of discernment during his catechesis at the General Audience on Wednesday.

St. Ignatius of Loyola

The Holy Father recalled the example of St. Ignatius of Loyola, and the decisive episode of the saint’s life when he was home convalescing after his leg was injured in battle. To chase away boredom, St. Ignatius asked for something to read and unfortunately, only the lives of saints was to be found in the house.

In the course of reading, St. Ignatius began to discover another world that captivated him and seemed to compete with that of knights, and he became fascinated by the figures of Sts. Francis and Dominic, with a desire to imitate them.

Saint Ignatius sensed within himself an alternation of thoughts, and he began to notice differences. In his autobiography, the saint notes that when he thought about the things of the world, he felt much pleasure, but afterward, he felt dry and sad. Instead, when he thought of going to Jerusalem barefoot and practicing other austerities, he found pleasure not only while thinking of them, but also when he had ceased.

Pope Francis sends his condolences to King Charles III and the people of the United Kingdom for the death of Queen Elizabeth II, and praises her “life of unstinting service to the good of the Nation and the Commonwealth”.

Service, devotion, witness

Shortly after her death, Pope Francis sent a telegramme to offer his condolences to King Charles III for the death of his mother, the UK’s longest-serving monarch.

“Deeply saddened to learn of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, I offer heartfelt condolences to Your Majesty, the Members of the Royal Family, the People of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.”

The Pope said he joins everyone who mourns her loss “in praying for the late Queen’s eternal rest, and in paying tribute to her life of unstinting service to the good of the Nation and the Commonwealth, her example of devotion to duty, her steadfast witness of faith in Jesus Christ and her firm hope in his promises.”

Pope Francis also commended “her noble soul” to the mercy of God the Father.

“I assure Your Majesty of my prayers that Almighty God will sustain you with his unfailing grace as you now take up your high responsibilities as King. Upon you and all who cherish the memory of your late mother, I invoke an abundance of divine blessings as a pledge of comfort and strength in the Lord.”

Encounter with Pope Francis caps formation course for new bishops
By Hannah Brockhaus
Rome Newsroom, Sep 8, 2022 / 07:50 am

After a COVID-caused hiatus, the Vatican’s new bishop school was back in session this week.

Approximately 150 Catholic bishops attended the first weeklong session of the formation course in Rome, which ended Thursday. A second session, with about 170 bishops, will be held Sept. 12–19.

The seminar, usually held annually, culminated in an audience with Pope Francis in the Vatican’s Clementine Hall on Sept. 8. The Vatican did not release any information about what was said in the meeting.

Bishop Louis Tylka of the Diocese of Peoria, Illinois, was among the participants in the course. He said on Twitter that the new bishops also celebrated Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica and venerated the relics of St. Peter.

The theme of the 2022 edition was “to announce the Gospel in the changing epoch and after the pandemic: the service of bishop.”

The week began with Mass, said by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s secretary of state.
