Pope at Angelus: Prayer is medicine for faith, restoring the soul
16 October 2022, 12:17

Before leading the recitation of the Angelus, Pope Francis encourages us to focus on what is most important, love for God and neighbour, and to pray always so our faith stays strong.
By Thaddeus Jones

Offering his reflections on the Sunday Gospel, Pope Francis recalled the question Jesus asked, which we can also ask ourselves today: “When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” (Lk 18:8 )

He would find, unfortunately, many wars, poverty, and inequality, but also incredible technological advances with people always rushing and busy, said the Pope. But more importantly, he asked if the Lord would find people who put God at the centre of their lives.

Re:  Synod Assembly of Bishops to be held in 2023 and 2024

Permanent Synodal Church — A Progressive Jesuit Cardinal’s ‘Dream’ Come True
Edward Pentin May 21, 2021

The Vatican’s announcement today that Pope Francis has changed his plans for the next Synod of Bishops and made it into a multiphase process over two years comes closer to fulfilling a “dream” of the late progressive Jesuit Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini.

The former cardinal-archbishop of Milan, a favorite of those pushing for heterodox reforms in the Church, had envisioned a permanent synodal Church in which the idea of collegial governance introduced at the Second Vatican Council could be better realized.

The Jesuit biblical scholar, who died in 2012, “had a dream” in 1999 of a Church capable of being in a permanent synodal state, with a “collegial and authoritative exchange among all the bishops on some key issues.”

For Cardinal Martini, those key issues comprised “the shortage of ordained ministers, the role of woman in society and in the Church, the discipline of marriage, the Catholic vision of sexuality, penitential practice, relations with the sister Churches of Orthodoxy and more in general the need to revive ecumenical hopes, the relationship between democracy and values and between civil laws and the moral law.”

In a later interview in 2004, he said he also saw the Synod of Bishops — as Pope Francis does — as an important element in a less centralized form of Church governance.

Pope Francis: ‘War must end or world risks nuclear catastrophe’
16 October 2022, 11:27

Pope Francis anticipates the release of his new book “I Ask You in the Name of God. Ten Prayers for a Future of Hope”, and launches an impassioned plea for nations to set aside war and the threat of nuclear destruction.
By Devin Watkins

The Italian newspaper “La Stampa” on Sunday published an excerpt of Pope Francis’ new book, which hits bookshelves in Italian on Tuesday, 18 October.

Entitled “I Ask You in the Name of God. Ten Prayers for a Future of Hope”, the Pope’s new book was edited by Hernan Reyes Alcaide and published by the Edizioni Piemme. It comes in preparation for the 10th anniversary of his pontificate, on 13 March 2023.

In the book, he launches a universal appeal for nations and peoples to work together to build a better world where peace reigns.

‘The Mystery Man’: A hyperrealistic artwork of the Shroud of Christ
15 October 2022, 12:16

A hyperrealistic, volumetric artwork of the body of Christ as revealed on the Shroud of Turin is on display at the Cathedral of Salamanca, as part of a "pilgrim" exhibition visiting five continents.
By Johan Pacheco, Salamanca, Spain

One of the most emblematic Catholic Cathedrals in Spain is hosting an exhibition of the hyperrealistic and volumetric artwork entitled "The Mystery Man", which is the result of an assiduous study of the Holy Shroud, known as the Shroud of Turin. The effort took more than 15 years, and was carried out by Spanish artists.

The exhibition opened on 13 October, and encompasses a floorspace of 600 square meters. It fills four rooms that narrate the passion and death of Christ, ending with impressive work of a model of what the body of Jesus of Nazareth could have looked like, according to historical and scientific data offered by the Shroud.

Pope calls for transformation of economy for the common good
17 October 2022, 12:04

Pope Francis meets with a group of entrepreneurs from Spain, and highlights the importance of transforming the global economy, so that everyone can benefit from it, especially the poor and marginalised.
By Francesca Merlo

Addressing a group of entrepreneurs from Spain in the Vatican's Consistory Hall, Pope Francis welcomed and greeted them, describing their presence as "a sign of hope".

During the audience with the "Confederación Española de Asociaciones de Jóvenes Empresarios" and the "Confederación de Empresarios de Galicias", he noted that we are living in an era with "well-known economic and social imbalances", adding that there is an urgent need to propose an adequate economy to help solve the major problems we are experiencing worldwide.

The Holy Father went on to express three ideas he considers relevant for their journey as entrepreneurs.

Pope encourages Cistercians in their witness to community and poverty
17 October 2022, 12:09

Meeting with Cistercians of the Common Observance who have gathered for their General Chapter, Pope Francis speaks of the importance of following Jesus in community and through their missionary outreach.
By Vatican News staff writer

Addressing the Cistercians of the Common Observance in the Clementine Hall of the Apostolic Palace on the occasion of their General Chapter, Pope Francis encouraged them in their faith journey and to walk together following Jesus "to be with Him, to listen to Him, to observe Him." He said it is a journey that each one makes at their own pace, their own unique and unrepeatable history, but together in community, just as the twelve apostles who were always with Jesus and walked with Him. They had not chosen themselves but were chosen by the Lord, said the Pope, and it was not always easy to get along given their differences, weaknesses, and pride.

We too are like that, the Pope pointed out, and it can also be challenging for us to move together in fellowship. At the same time, we can never cease to be amazed by the joy of this gift of community, even as we are not perfect, not all the same, but con-voked, involved, called to walk together in following the Lord.

Pope to World Food Forum: Eradicate hunger with spirit of fraternity
17 October 2022, 16:00

In a message to the World Food Forum taking place in Rome, Pope Francis reminds participants that in a world impacted by interconnected crises, the centrality of the human person must never be forgotten.
By Linda Bordoni

At the heart of Pope Francis’ message to participants in the 2nd edition of the World Food Forum (WFF) was the call “not simply to feed the other, but to give ourselves in service to others” in a spirit of “fraternity and solidarity that must inspire relations between individuals and between peoples.”

The Forum at the UN Rome-based Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) takes place from 17 to 21 October 2022 with a focus on “Youth Action”, “Science & Innovation”, and “Investment".

Pope tweets support for ACN children’s Rosary campaign
18 October 2022, 13:32

Pope Francis is encouraging the faithful to join children around the world who are praying the Rosary for peace.
By Christopher Wells

“Let us #PrayTogether with the children of every continent who today are reciting the Rosary for peace in the world,” writes Pope Francis is in a tweet on Thursday. “Let us entrust to Our Lady’s intercession the suffering people of Ukraine and other people who are suffering due to war, violence and misery.”

One Million Children Praying the Rosary

The Pope’s tweet refers to Aid to the Church in Need’s annual “One Million Children Praying the Rosary” campaign, which takes place each year on 18 October, the feast of St. Luke the Evangelist.

The campaign recalls the thought of St. Pio da Pietrelcina – known as Padre Pio – who said, “When one million children pray the Rosary, the world will change”; as well as Jesus’ words in the Gospel of St. Luke: “Unless you become like children, you will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven.”

This year’s campaign, which is dedicated to asking for peace and unity throughout the world, is focused on God the Father’s love for the world.

What two future popes saw at the Second Vatican Council
By Kevin J. Jones
Denver Newsroom, Oct 18, 2022 / 09:00 am

Sixty years ago this month, the Second Vatican Council brought together thousands of bishops, Catholic leaders and even non-Catholic observers to reflect on the role of the Church in the modern world.

Pope Francis’ two immediate predecessors, John Paul II and Benedict XVI, were eyewitnesses to this three-year event, which took place from 1962 to 1965. After they were elected to the papacy, their pontificates brought the legacy of the Second Vatican Council into the 21st century and taught generations of Catholics how to bring Christ into their lives — and into the world.

Pope Francis appoints pro-abortion economist to Pontifical Academy for Life
By Zelda Caldwell
Washington, D.C. Newsroom, Oct 18, 2022 / 15:00 pm

One of the newest members of the Pontifical Academy for Life appointed by Pope Francis is an outspoken advocate of abortion rights, having recently shared her opposition to the overturning of Roe v. Wade on Twitter.

Italian-American economist Mariana Mazzucato, known for her work promoting the public sector’s role in encouraging innovation, was among seven academics appointed by the pope on Oct. 15 to serve five-year terms with the academy.

In his 2020 book “Let Us Dream: The Path to a Better Future,” Pope Francis described Mazzucato’s work as “thinking that is not ideological, which moves beyond the polarization of free market capitalism and state socialism, and which has at its heart a concern that all of humanity have access to land, lodging, and labor.”

The website Catholic Culture published on Tuesday links to recent social media posts shared by Mazzucato in which she tweeted and retweeted pro-abortion statements concerning the  Supreme Court’s decision to return abortion law to the states.

Pope at Audience: ‘Reread your life’s story to discover Christ’
19 October 2022, 09:20

Pope Francis continues his catechesis series on discernment at the Wednesday General Audience, and urges each of us to examine the story of our life in order to discover the hidden footsteps of Jesus.
By Devin Watkins

“Recounting the events of our life also enables us to grasp important nuances and details, which can reveal themselves to be valuable aids, hitherto concealed.”

Pope Francis offered that insight on Wednesday as he spoke to pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square for the weekly General Audience.

Continuing his catechesis on the theme of discernment, the Pope focused his attention on how our life’s story can reveal God’s hidden actions.

“Our life is the most precious ‘book’ that is given to us, a book that unfortunately many do not read, or rather they do so too late, before dying.”

Pope Francis to visit family hometown in November
19 October 2022, 13:48

Pope Francis is to travel to the northern Italian town of Asti in mid-November to celebrate his cousin’s birthday. He is also scheduled to meet with the diocesan community and celebrate the Eucharist.
By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis will travel to the northern Italian town of Asti, in the Piedmont region, on 19-20 November for his cousin’s 90th birthday.

“We are so happy for this news” said Bishop Marco Prastaro of Asti, “We will do everything to welcome Pope Francis and respect his wish that part of the visit be private.”

The news was announced on Wednesday by the Prefecture of the Pontifical Household, which said the Pope will travel to Asti in the afternoon of 19 November on the occasion of his cousin’s birthday. A statement specified that during this part of the two-day visit he will be meeting privately with members of his extended family.

On Sunday, 20 November, the statement continued, the Pope will preside at Mass at 11 am in Asti’s Cathedral, “to meet the Diocesan community that his parents left when they emigrated to Argentina.”

The Pope will travel back to the Vatican in the afternoon of Sunday.

Pope encourages Mariannhill Missionaries in holiness
20 October 2022, 10:58

Pope Francis praises participants in the General Chapter of the Mariannhill Mission Society for their proclamation of the Gospel, and encourages them to spread holiness and welcome synodality.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Pope Francis has recalled the rich history of the Mariannhill Missionaries and encouraged them to continue their mission in a way that is always more open to the Holy Spirit's newness and promptings.

The Holy Father did so on Thursday when addressing the missionaries, whose Congregation is dedicated to foreign missions, who have been participating in their General Chapter in Rome.

The Pope noted that their Chapter takes place following the 100-year anniversary celebrations of Congregation’s foundation, and "seeks to carry forward, amid the challenges of the present time, the zeal for evangelization that inspired Abbot Franz Pfanner and his Trappist companions to lay the foundations for its distinctive apostolate."

“It is my hope that your deliberations will confirm the Congregation in its founding charism, which combines fidelity to the evangelical counsels with passion for the spread of the Gospel 'ad gentes' and the extension of Christ’s kingdom of holiness, justice and peace.”

Vatican to host 'Lectio Petri' events to explore St. Peter's legacy
20 October 2022, 15:14

The Holy See Press Office hosts Cardinals Ravasi and Gambetti to showcase the 'Lectio Petris: The Apostle Peter in History, Arts and Culture' initiative, which runs through the Spring of 2023.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

The Vatican is set to host 'Lectio Petri: The Apostle Peter in History, Arts and Culture,' a series of meetings on the life and ministry of the saint, open to the public in St. Peter's Basilica.

This new project was presented on Thursday in the Holy See Press Office by Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, President Emeritus of the former Pontifical Council for Culture and founder of the Courtyard of the Gentiles, and Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, Vicar General for His Holiness for Vatican City, Archpriest of St. Peter's Basilica, and President of the Fabric of Saint Peter.

The series consists of four encounters, in the evocative setting of the Vatican Basilica and with an unprecedented and original format, to explore the life and Ministry of the Apostle Peter in history, arts and culture.

The project is being organized by the Basilica, the Fratelli tutti Foundation and the Courtyard of the Gentiles.

St. Peter, 'fascinating and complex figure'

During Thursday's Press Conference, Cardinal Ravasi emphasized the current revelance of Saint Peter.

“Peter is a fascinating and complex figure, also narrated in the Gospels, with his weaknesses and frailties. His story is studded with different moments, we could almost call them 'phases', the same that a believer might go through today: vocation, crisis - resulting in betrayal - and then conversion and final rehabilitation.”

The Cardinal, who just turned 80 this week, explained that Peter is "a somewhat modern character," who deserves to be explored in depth and is relevant to contemporary times.

"He was a mediator between the Judeo-Christian and pagan Churches and, according to the Apostle Paul, he was the first official witness of Christ's resurrection, impacting not only the Catholic faith and tradition."

Enlightening the face of 'our' Church

Likewise, Cardinal Gambetti described the programme as worthwhile.

"We look at the first of the Apostles with gratitude and reverence," he reflected, "for crossing the Mediterranean and arriving in Rome, in the city that the poet Tibullus called 'eternal,' and bearing witness to his love for Jesus."

"Peter," continued the President of the Fabric of St. Peter, "followed the Master, becoming like Him in every way."

This inheritance, he suggested, "is seamlessly duplicated by the Apostolic Tradition to this day."

“In the light of Peter's faith, we want to enlighten the face of 'our' Church and better understand the Way that the Magisterium points out to all peoples in this Third Millennium", from the Second Vatican Council to Pope Francis.”

Pope to business leaders: Use gifts to promote common good
21 October 2022, 14:04

In his address to business leaders and entrepreneurs gathered for the 27th World Congress of UNIAPAC, an international union of business executives, Pope Francis urges members to use their God-given gifts to work towards a more caring and inclusive economy.
By Sophie Peeters

Addressing participants of the 27th World Congress of UNIAPAC on Friday, Pope Francis urged business leaders to always remember that success in business is a “gift from God.”

Their talents as businessmen, the Pope noted, should be directed toward helping those most in need and towards impacting change.

Change however does require courage, the courage to “discern the divine grace in our lives,” the Pope noted.

UNIAPAC is an international organization composed of business people from around the world. Its mission is to advocate “for an economy based on the respect and dignity of the person,” while promoting the “sense of Common Good.”

Parolin to EWTN: ‘Truth distinguishes information from communication’
21 October 2022, 11:41

Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin speaks at the EWTN Dinner in Frascati on Wednesday evening. We publish here the full text of his reflections under the theme: “The truth is what distinguishes information from communication”.
By Cardinal Pietro Parolin

Dear friends from EWTN,

I am grateful to you for inviting me to this gathering of your European affiliates. I greet your CEO Michael Warsaw, who is also a consultor of the Holy See’s Dicastery for Communication, and along with him, all those who work with you.

To communicate the salvific message of the Gospel, particularly through the Magisterium of the Successor of Peter, is a radical call, which is carried out today with new methods and new languages.

You have asked me to share a brief reflection on the theme “The truth is what distinguishes information from communication”.

Pope urges religious sisters to put relationship with Christ first
22 October 2022, 12:25

Pope Francis encourages Bridgettine and Comboni religious sisters to put Jesus first, to turn to Him constantly in Eucharistic Adoration, and to learn from the beautiful personal prayer of Pope St. John Paul II.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Pope Francis reminded religious sisters that Jesus is always their starting point for interior and community renewal, and that their constant relationship with Christ is indispensable.

The Pope's words came in his address at the Vatican on Saturday morning to members participating in the General Chapters of the Order of the Most Holy Saviour of St Bridget and of the Comboni missionary sisters.

Recalling that 22 October marks the Feast Day of St. Pope John Paul II, the date on which he began his Petrine Ministry, the Pope praised his predecessor as a man of God, and told the sisters that we can all learn from the Polish Pope's intense spirituality and prayer life.

Benedict XVI: Vatican II was both meaningful and necessary
22 October 2022, 15:20

Pope emeritus Benedict XVI sends a letter to an international symposium on "The Ecclesiology of Joseph Ratzinger" held at the US Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio, and upholds the importance and legacy of the Second Vatican Council.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

As the Church recently celebrated the 60-year anniversary of the Second Vatican Council, Pope emeritus Benedict XVI said that Vatican II not only was "meaningful" but "necessary."

The Pope Emeritus did so in a letter he sent to Father Dave Pivonka, the president of the Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio, which just hosted the 10th International Symposium, 20-21 October, on the theme 'The Ecclesiology of Joseph Ratzinger.'

The event at the US university was sponsored by the Joseph Ratzinger-Benedict XVI Vatican Foundation. Fr. Federico Lombardi, President of the Ratzinger Foundation, read the letter at the event.
