Italian cardinal leads Vespers at Pantheon for Traditional Latin Mass pilgrimage
By Hannah Brockhaus
Rome, Italy, Oct 29, 2022 / 11:00 am

The head of the Italian bishops' conference, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, presided over Vespers on Friday for an annual Traditional Latin Mass pilgrimage in Rome.

The three-day Rome pilgrimage is named for Benedict XVI’s 2007 apostolic letter Summorum Pontificum, which acknowledged the right of priests to offer Mass according to the 1962 Roman Missal.

Zuppi led Vespers on Oct. 28 at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Martyrs, better known as the Pantheon.

The Italian cardinal, a longtime collaborator with the Catholic Sant’Egidio Community, assumed leadership of the Italian bishops’ conference in May. He has been archbishop of Bologna since 2015.

After the publication of Pope Francis’ 2021 motu proprio Traditionis custodes, Zuppi was one of the first bishops to enact the decree in his diocese, allowing the celebration of the Traditional Latin Mass to continue in the parish where it had been held since 2007.

The Traditional Latin Mass pilgrimage, organized by the People of Summorum Pontificum, is in its 11th year. According to its website, it brings people “ad Petri Sedem” (“to the See of Peter”) to give “testimony of the attachment that binds numerous faithful throughout the whole world to the traditional liturgy.”

Christmas 2022: Vatican to display hand-carved wooden nativity scene
By Hannah Brockhaus
Vatican City, Oct 29, 2022 / 08:55 am

For Christmas 2022, the Vatican has commissioned a nativity scene made of life-sized figures hand carved out of alpine cedar trees.

The display will be unveiled in St. Peter’s Square on Dec. 3, during a lighting ceremony for the Vatican Christmas tree.

A second nativity scene, which will be displayed in the Paul VI Hall, was donated by the government of Guatemala.

The Holy Family and an angel were handmade by Guatemalan artisans in the local tradition, using wood and colorful decorations.

The Vatican has placed a nativity scene in front of St. Peter’s Basilica for the Christmas season since the 1980s. For about a decade, the Vatican has asked different countries or Italian regions to lend the nativity to be displayed. In 2021, the scene came from Peru.

Pope at Angelus: ‘Jesus looks at us to restore our dignity’
30 October 2022, 12:08

Pope Francis reflects on the story of Jesus encountering Zacchaeus the tax collector, and says the Lord always gazes upon broken humanity with a desire to restore our dignity.
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis prayed the Angelus on Sunday with pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square, and reflected on the day’s Gospel (Lk 19:1-10), which recounts the story of Jesus inviting Himself to stay with Zacchaeus.

The Pope focused his comments on the “gaze” shared by Zacchaeus and Jesus, as the chief tax collector looked down on Jesus from a tree.

Zacchaeus, who was the chief tax collector in the city of Jericho, was seeking to see “who Jesus was”, but was short in stature and so had to climb a tree to see over the crowd.

Pope: Jesus is source of St Francis’ unique holiness
31 October 2022, 11:10

Pope Francis receives members of the Ecclesial Coordination for the 800th Anniversary of the death of St Francis of Assisi, who are beginning a three-year period of preparation that will culminate in 2026. In his address, the Holy Father emphasized that Jesus, and faith in Him, was the source of St Francis’ life of holiness.
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis on Monday welcomed members of the group coordinating the 800th anniversary of the death of St Francis of Assisi, which will take place in 2026.

At the beginning of his address, the Holy Father said that when he chose the name “Francis” at the beginning of his pontificate, he recognized that Francis of Assisi was a popular, but also misunderstood, saint. The source of the saint’s devotion to peace, to poverty, to creation was Jesus Christ, and St Francis’ faith in Him. “From this source, [Francis] received an abundance of the Holy Spirit, who urged him to imitate Jesus and follow the Gospel to the letter.”

Pope to COPERCOM: Your reality is noble, requiring patience and vision
31 October 2022, 12:00

Pope Francis meets with members of Italy's Copercom, which coordinates the communications associations, and stresses four main points to enable them to work in a timely and effective manner.
By Francesca Merlo

Greeting members of the Coordination of Communication Associations (COPERCOM), for the twenty-fifth anniversary of their founding, Pope Francis took the opportunity to "reflect with you on a few objectives".

Coordination

The first objective was "coordination". Pope Francis described this as "a noble objective to bring several realities together to achieve a very specific goal". He noted that it is not an easy task, but rather one that requires patience, vision and unity. "The road travelled in these twenty-five years already offers you a good wealth of experience to further improve the work of coordination", noted the Pope

Pope’s November prayer intention: 'For children who suffer'
31 October 2022, 11:14

Pope Francis releases his prayer intention for November, inviting everyone to pray for the millions of children who are suffering around the world, especially for those who are homeless, orphans, and victims of war.
By Vatican News staff writer

“An abandoned child is our fault,” says Pope Francis in the video prepared by the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network announcing his prayer intention for November.

In the video, Pope Francis calls on Catholics to pray for children who are suffering due to rejection, indigence, poverty, and conflict around the world.

“There are still millions of boys and girls who suffer and live in conditions very similar to slavery,” the Pope said, emphasizing that these children are not “numbers” but “human beings with names and an identity that God has given them.”

Every marginalized child living without schooling, without a family, without health care, the Pope continued, is “a cry;” a cry “that rises up to God and shames the system that we adults have built.”

Update:  Cardinal Zen trial

Cardinal Zen trial update: Defense calls for charges to be dismissed
By Courtney Mares
Rome Newsroom, Oct 31, 2022 / 12:10 pm

Lawyers defending Cardinal Joseph Zen and five other Hong Kong democracy activists took the floor Monday in the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Court, the same courthouse where a Protestant pastor was sentenced to one year in jail for sedition last week.

In the third court date this month, Zen’s defense argued before Principal Magistrate Ada Yim Shun-yee on Oct. 31 that the charges against the trustees of the 612 Humanitarian Relief Fund should be dismissed.

The 90-year-old cardinal and the fund’s other trustees have been charged with failing to apply for local society registration for the 612 Humanitarian Relief Fund between 2019 and 2021. The fund helped pro-democracy protesters pay their legal fees until it dissolved itself in October 2021.

Hong Kong’s Societies Ordinance required any club, company, partnership, or association of persons to register with the police commissioner or ask for an exemption within one month of its establishment.

According to the defense, the trustees did not have reciprocal rights and responsibilities and therefore did not set up a society as defined by the ordinance, Asia News reported

Pope at Angelus: ‘Like saints, be builders of peace’
01 November 2022, 10:29

On the Solemnity of All Saints, Pope Francis says the lives of the saints can inspire us to live radically as peacemakers, boldly building the way to peace through works of mercy, love, and justice.
By Sophie Peeters

Speaking to the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square for the Angelus on the Solemnity of All Saints, Pope Francis reflected on today’s Gospel, the Beatitudes of Jesus (Mt 5:1-12), saying they serve as a form of "identity card" for the saints.

Rather than having the stereotypical view that all saints lived “perfect” and “precise” lives, the Pope said the Beatitudes rather show another side of the equation: the saints lived radically “countercultural” and “revolutionary" lives.

Pope Francis accepts resignation of German archbishop
By AC Wimmer
CNA Newsroom, Nov 1, 2022 / 07:52 am

Pope Francis accepted the resignation of a German archbishop on Tuesday.

Archbishop Ludwig Schick of Bamberg had been in charge of the Bavarian archdiocese since 2002.

Schick recently came under pressure for the handling of sexual abuse cases in his diocese.

The archbishop of the diocese in Southern Germany said in a statement published Nov. 1 that he had conveyed this request “to the pope verbally and in writing during a private audience in April of this year, explaining it thus: I have fulfilled and completed my duties in the archdiocese.”

Pope entrusts Apostolic Journey to Bahrain to Our Lady
02 November 2022, 16:00

Pope Francis commends his Apostolic Journey to the Kingdom of Bahrain into the hands of Our Lady, spending some time in prayer at the Saint Mary Major Basilica on Wednesday afternoon.
By Benedict Mayaki

On the eve of his departure on his 39th Apostolic Journey abroad, Pope Francis paid a visit to the Roman Basilica of Saint Mary Major to entrust his visit to the Kingdom of Bahrain to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

According to a statement by the Holy See Press Office, the Holy Father spent some time in prayer before an icon of Maria Salus Populi Romani.  The Pope's Wednesday afternoon visit to St. Mary Major marked the 100th time he has visited the Basilica since the start of his pontificate.

Pope Francis is set to depart Rome on Thursday morning on a 4-day Apostolic visit (3 – 6 November). He is scheduled to arrive in the central Bahrain city of Awali around 4: 45 pm local time.

Overview of Church in Bahrain ahead of Pope’s visit
29 October 2022, 08:00

As Pope Francis prepares to embark on his 39th Apostolic Journey abroad to visit Bahrain, we offer an overview of the Church in the Gulf nation, home to some 80,000 Catholics.
By Lisa Zengarini

Similar to the other Muslim nations of the Arabian Peninsula, the presence of Christian communities in Bahrain is relatively recent and is mostly related to that of diplomatic staff and of foreign companies and workers, who began flowing to the Gulf island nation starting from the early 1930s.

At first, Catholics hailed mostly from neighbouring Middle Eastern countries but, after the oil boom in the region, thousands of Christian immigrants from Asia also started to arrive.

Pope at Bahrain Dialogue Forum: Religious leaders have duty to help humanity
04 November 2022, 08:55

t the closing ceremony of the Bahrain Forum for Dialogue, Pope Francis speaks out against war and on behalf of true religious freedom, recognition of women, protection of children's fundamental rights, and the concept of citizenship.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

In a world run by narrow interests and war, the Pope says religious leaders must set a good example, and commit themselves to encouraging and assisting our wounded human family.

This theme was at the heart of Pope Francis' address at the Bahrain Forum for Dialogue on 4 November in the Al-Fida’ Square of the Sakhir Royal Palace in Bahrain's capital of Manama, during the Pope's second day of his Apostolic Journey to the Kingdom of Bahrain.

The Pope is making his 39th Apostolic Journey outside of Italy, having accepted the invitation to visit the country extended by the King of Bahrain, Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and by the local Church.

He visits the archipelago to participate in this Forum and to bring his closeness to the country's small Catholic flock, who make up about 4 percent of the population and is comprised primarily of immigrants.

Pope in Bahrain: Prayer and fraternity are our modest but effective weapons
04 November 2022, 15:35

Pope Francis encourages members of the Muslim Council of Elders in Bahrain to embrace fraternity, prayer and common efforts to help humanity rediscover the hidden sources of life, foster peace and promote care of the disadvantaged in society.
By Benedict Mayaki, SJ

Pope Francis met with the members of the Muslim Council of Elders, in the presence of the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Tayyeb in the mosque of the Sakhir Royal Palace on Friday afternoon.

Addressing the members, the Holy Father wished the peace of God upon them, who desire to foster reconciliation in order to avoid divisions and conflicts in Muslim communities, who see in extremism, a danger that corrodes genuine religion and who are committed to dispelling erroneous interpretations that do a disservice to religious belief.

"May peace come down and remain upon you: upon you, who wish to spread peace by instilling within people’s hearts the values of respect, tolerance and moderation; upon you, who seek to encourage friendly relations, mutual respect and trust with those who, like myself, are followers of a different religious tradition; upon you, who strive to provide young people with a moral and intellectual education that opposes all forms of hatred and intolerance."

Pope in Bahrain: Unity and witness are essential for ecumenism
04 November 2022, 16:50

Pope Francis emphasizes the need for “unity in diversity” and “witness of life” during an Ecumenical Meeting and Prayer for Peace at the end of his second day in Bahrain.
By Christopher Wells

At the end of his second day in Bahrain, Pope Francis joined the Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople as well as other Christian leaders from the region for an Ecumenical Meeting and Prayer for Peace at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Arabia in Awali.

In his address, the Pope lamented divisions among Christians, which “have wounded the Lord’s holy body.” However, he said, “the Holy Spirit, who joins all the members together, is greater than our divisions according to the flesh”; and so, the Pope continued, “it is right to say that what unites us far exceeds what divides us.”

Reflecting on the reading chosen for the Encounter, which described the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, Pope Francis focused on two main themes: unity in diversity, and witness of life.”
