Pope at Mass in Bahrain: Love always and love everyone
05 November 2022, 07:52

Pope Francis presides at Mass in Bahrain's National Stadium on the third day of his 39th Apostolic Journey abroad, and urges the faithful to shatter the chains of evil and break the spiral of violence by loving everyone, always.
By Francesca Merlo

Pope Francis started his third day in Bahrain by celebrating Holy Mass in the National Stadium. In his homily, the Holy Father reminded all those gathered of the prophet Isaiah's words about the Messiah whom God will raise up: “His power shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace”.

He noted that, although this sounds like a contradiction, as "we often notice that the more power is sought, the more peace is threatened", the prophet announces the extraordinary news that "the Messiah to come will indeed be powerful, not in the manner of a commander who wages war and rules over others, but as the 'Prince of Peace' who reconciles people with God and with one another."

“His great power does not come from the force of violence, but from the weakness of love.”

The Holy Father then asked those present to stop and reflect on the phrase "to love always and to love everyone".

Pope in Bahrain: Dear young people, we need you!
05 November 2022, 15:45

During a meeting with young people at Sacred Heart School in Awali, Pope Francis tells them, “We need your creativity, your dreams and your courage, your charm and your smiles, your contagious joy and that touch of craziness that you can bring to every situation, which helps to break us out of our stale habits and ways of looking at things.”
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis encouraged young people to “Never lose the courage to dream big and to live life to the full,” during an encounter with youths at Sacred Heart School in Awali, Bahrain on Saturday.

Taking his cue from the testimonies of three young people who spoke at the beginning of the event, Pope Francis offered “three small invitations,” insisting he was not speaking so much as a teacher, “but as someone concerned to support and encourage you.”

Pope to Bahrain clergy: Never tire of spreading God's joy
06 November 2022, 07:55

On final day of Pope Francis' Apostolic Journey to Bahrain, Pope encourages nation's clergy to joyously bring God's joy to the Gulf nation's diverse flock, and makes appeals for peace in Ethiopia and Ukraine
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Preserve and deepen your Christian joy, spreading it to all around you, and remember that with God, you can face and overcome everything.

Pope Francis offered this powerful reminder when speaking to bishops, priests, deacons, consecrated persons, seminarians and lay pastoral workers, of Bahrain on Sunday in the Sacred Heart Church in Bahrain's capital of Manama.

This encounter marks the last public meeting of the Pope prior to his departure from the Middle Eastern Gulf nation, for his 39th Apostolic Journey abroad, for the Bahrain Dialogue Forum and to encourage the Muslim-majority nation's small, but fervent Catholic flock.

During his remarks, the Holy Father called for spreading Christian joy, he urged those present to let the Holy Spirit comfort and restore them and he encouraged them to be guardians of unity, who are credible and ready to engage in dialogue.

To German Catholics he says: "Germany already has one great Evangelical Church, I wouldn't want to see another one."
From the Papal flight

Please find below the working transcript of Pope Francis' conversation with journalists on the flight back from Bahrain.

Fatima Al Najem Bahrain News Agency: I would like to tell you something before I address my question to you. You have a very special place in my heart, not only because you visited my country but because you were elected Pope on my birthday. I have a question: how do you evaluate the results of your historic visit to the Kingdom of Bahrain and how do you evaluate the efforts Bahrain is making in consolidating and promoting communal living, in all spheres of society, of all religions, sexes and races?

By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Pope Francis has thanked the Blessed Mother for his Apostolic Visit to the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Keeping with tradition, the Pope visited the Rome's Marian Basilica of St. Mary Major upon returning to Rome on Sunday from his Apostolic Journey to visit Our Lady and gave thanks for her maternal protection.

According to the Holy See Press Office, the Pope stayed some moments in prayer at the feet of the ancient Roman icon of Maria Salus Populi Romani ('Salvation of the Roman Peoples') to express his gratitude to Mary for the fruitful days abroad.

A momentous journey

Pope Francis landed in Rome on Sunday afternoon from his just-concluded 39th Apostolic Journey abroad, which marked his second to the Middle-Eastern Gulf region, and the 58th country he has visited as Pope.

The Gulf Air Boeing 787 aircraft carrying the Pope, his entourage and the journalists accompanying him arrived in the Italian capital after the four-day Journey to the Muslim-majority island nation, which the Pope visited to participate in The Bahrain Forum for Dialogue and to bring his closeness to the country's small and diverse Catholic flock.

Pope to Claretians: always seek new ways to serve the Lord
07 November 2022, 13:54

Addressing some 120 members of the Institute of Theology of Religious Life in Rome as they celebrate its 50th anniversary, Pope Francis praises their precious academic work for consecrated life and encourages the Claretian missionaries not to tire of going to the frontiers and being bold in their mission.
By Lisa Zengarini

Pope Francis on Monday received in audience the academic community of the Claretianum Institute of Theology of Religious Life in Rome celebrating the 50th anniversary of its foundation.

The Institute, which has been incorporated into the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome, was established in 1971, after the Second Vatican Council, though it traces its origin back to the early 1930s. It is the first institution of its kind in the Catholic Church specialized in the field of Theology of Consecrated Life.

In his address, Pope Francis praised the work carried out over the past five decades by the Claretianum “in the spirit and mission” of St.  Anthony Mary Claret, the founder of the Missionaries Sons of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary, commonly known as

Analysis: A divided island faces uncertain future after death of Cyprus Orthodox archbishop
By Andrea Gagliarducci
Rome Newsroom, Nov 8, 2022 / 07:55 am

With the death of Archbishop Chrysostomos II on Monday, the Orthodox Church of Cyprus is facing an uncertain future, as is the community living with what is often called ”the last wall of Europe”: the border that splits the island between the breakaway Turkish Cypriot in the north and the internationally recognized south.

Who will be able to collect the legacy of the head of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus? Who will take the line of defense, however harsh, of the integrity of Cyprus? Who will carry out the work of strengthening the Cypriot Orthodox Church?

Chrysostomos II died Nov. 7 at age 81 after years of battling cancer. He had been archbishop of New Justinian and All Cyprus since 2006, and in this position, he strongly developed ecumenical relations. He was the first archbishop of Cyprus to meet a pope in a “bilateral” meeting in 2007. During his time as archbishop of Cyprus, he welcomed two popes to the island: Benedict XVI in 2010 and Pope Francis in 2021. These papal visits were the culmination of an extraordinary pastoral and ecumenical effort.

It’s a life-size bronze statue titled "Sheltering" by Canadian artist Timothy Schmalz, known especially for his “Angels Unawares” sculpture of migrants and refugees installed in a corner of the square.

The new sculpture depicts a homeless person being covered by a blanket pulled over him by a flying dove.

The Vincentian Family “13 Houses Campaign”

It was conceived to shine a spotlight on global homelessness and encourage practical solutions in keeping with the mission of the “13 Houses Campaign”, an initiative of the Homeless Alliance of the Vincentian Family (FHA) that gathers religious congregations, lay associations and charities inspired by the life and work of St. Vincent de Paul.

Through the campaign, the Alliance seeks to house 10,000 people worldwide, by the end of 2023 in more than 160 countries where the Vincentian Family already works, as part of a more ambitious plan to change the lives of many 1.2 billion people who are currently homeless around the world.

Pope at Audience: Bahrain, a Journey of dialogue and peace
09 November 2022, 09:30

At his weekly Wednesday General Audience, Pope Francis dedicates his catechesis to his recent Apostolic Journey to Bahrain, calling it a visit of dialogue and fraternity in a world afflicted by division and conflict.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Pope Francis dedicated his weekly General Audience in the Vatican to his recently-concluded Apostolic Journey to the Middle Eastern Gulf nation of Bahrain, marking his 39th Apostolic Visit abroad, second to the region, and 58th country visited since the start of his pontificate.

To the crowds in St. Peter's Square and those following from afar, the Pope expressed gratitude for the visit's peace-producing fruits, especially in this world torn apart by conflict and war, especially the war in Ukraine.

The Pope remembered that his travel there was for The Bahrain Forum for Dialogue, "which brought together religious leaders in the service of peace."

"It comes spontaneous to ask why the Pope wanted to visit this small country with such a large Islamic majority?" the Pope asked, responding, "I would like to respond through three words: dialogue, encounter and journey."

Pope to Pontifical Nepomuk College: Be builders of peace
10 November 2022, 11:09

Pope Francis greets members of the Pontifical Nepomuk College – the seminary for Czechs and Slovaks in Rome, and urges them to build bridges of encounter, peace, and dialogue in times of conflict and war.
By Sophie Peeters

Seminarians of the Pontifical Nepomuk College met with Pope Francis on Thursday for a private audience in the Vatican.

In his address, the Pope recalled the living testimony of the patron saint of the college, St. John of Nepomuk, who lived in Bohemia during the 14th century.

A confessor to the Queen of Bohemia, St. John of Nepomuk refused to reveal to the King what was said in the Queen’s confession.

The Saint was therefore tortured and killed by being thrown off a bridge due to his steadfast devotion to the sacrament.

Pope Francis said his courage is an example of the countless bishops and priests who have similarly endured years of saying “no to regimes” in order to remain faithful to the mission of the Church and their vocation.

Pope Francis: Priestly formation at the heart of evangelization
10 November 2022, 13:25

Pope Francis meets with rectors and formators of Latin American seminaries, and reflects on the necessity of high-quality formation for future priests.
By Christopher Wells

Speaking with rectors and formators of Latin American seminaries on Thursday morning, Pope Francis insisted that “all priestly formation, particularly that of future pastors, is at the heart of evangelization.”

The formators are taking part in a course in Rome organized by the Dicastery for the Clergy.
In his prepared remarks, Pope Francis emphasized the continuity between the formation guidelines produced by his immediate predecessors, while highlighting “one of the great contributions” of the current program, which focuses on formation that is "unique, integral, communitarian, and missionary.”

Its priorities are to create an educational system which involves parents, teachers and students, in order to give everyone proper responsibility within the educational community.

Pope: communication must be inclusive and truthful
12 November 2022, 14:04

Pope Francis reflects on the responsibility of those involved in communication encouraging them to always seek the truth, fight hate speech, give voice to those who have no voice, and refrain from spreading personal opinions.
By Linda Bordoni

The duty of those who work in communications is "to encourage closeness, to give voice to the excluded, to draw attention to what we normally discard and ignore" said Pope Francis speaking to Vatican employees and participants in the Dicastery for Communication’s Plenary Assembly.

In an audience on Saturday morning in the Apostolic Palace's Clementine Hall, the Pope reminded those present that the voice of God must resonate in their work

The three cornerstones of communication

In his prepared remarks, the Pope indicated three points upon which communication must be oriented: "making people less lonely", "giving voice to the voiceless" and educating oneself to communicate truthfully.
