Pope’s April prayer intention: ‘For a non-violent culture’
30 March 2023, 16:00

Pope Francis releases his prayer intention for the month of April, and urges everyone to pray and work for a non-violent culture which promotes peace.
By Devin Watkins

As the Church marks 60 years since Pope St. John XXIII published his encyclical Pacem in Terris, Pope Francis is calling on Christians to pray for a non-violent culture.

The Pope released a video accompanying his prayer intention for April 2023, produced by the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network.

He recalled that “war is madness” which is “beyond reason”.

“Any war, any armed confrontation, always ends in defeat for all,” he recalled.

Pope expected to be present at St Peter's for Palm Sunday Mass
31 March 2023, 13:17

The Director of the Holy See Press Office says Pope Francis is scheduled to be released from hospital on Saturday, and is expected to be present at the Palm Sunday Mass in St Peter's Square.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

On Friday, the Director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, said, "As he is scheduled to leave the hospital tomorrow, Pope Francis is expected to be present in St. Peter's Square for the Eucharistic celebration of Palm Sunday, Passion of the Lord."

In an earlier statement Friday morning, Mr Bruni updated the press on the Pope's condition: "Yesterday's day," the statement began, "passed well, with a normal clinical course. In the evening Pope Francis had dinner, eating pizza, together with those who are assisting him during these days of his hospital stay: with the Holy Father were the doctors, nurses, assistants, and staff of the Gendarmerie."

It added that this morning, after having breakfast, he read some newspapers and resumed work.

"His Holiness," the statement concluded, "is expected to return to the Santa Marta home tomorrow, upon the outcome of the results of the last examinations this morning."

Pope feeling better, visits young patients and baptises baby in hospital

The Director of the Holy See Press Office says Pope Francis is scheduled to be released from hospital on Saturday, and is expected to be present at the Palm Sunday Mass in St Peter's Square. On Friday afternoon he visited some of the little patients at the Hospital and baptized a baby.
By Vatican News

Pope Francis on Friday spent time with children who are being treated at the same Rome Hospital where he is receiving treatment for bronchitis.

A statement released by the Holy See Press Office Director, Matteo Bruni, said the Pope visited the children who are receiving treatment in the Gemelli Hospital's paediatric oncology ward.

"He brought them rosaries, chocolate easter eggs and copies of an Italian book for children about Jesus, born in Jerusalem of Judaea,” the statement said.

Bruni also said that during his visits, which lasted about half an hour, the Pope also baptized a little boy called Miguel Angel.

Afterwards, the Holy Father encouraged the baby's mother to tell the parish where the Baptism will be registered to say "the Pope baptised him!"

Board game marketed as ‘Christian’ is actually demonic, exorcist warns
By Peter Pinedo
Washington D.C., Mar 31, 2023 / 08:37 am

Catholic exorcist Father Ernesto Caro is warning that what is being marketed on Amazon as a Christian “Holy Spirit” board game is “not a game” at all but instead “a trap from the devil.”

On a March 28 segment of EWTN News Nightly, Caro, an exorcist in the Diocese of Monterey, Mexico, said that “the devil is always looking for different ways that he can trap all the victims that he can take for him, and this is one.”

The board game’s packaging claims it allows people to “communicate directly with Jesus Christ” and its online advertising says it’s “perfect for churches, prayer groups, or just getting together with friends.”

The game’s layout is very similar to that of a Ouija board, but it features Christian imagery including images of God, the crucifixion, angels, and a dove. Whereas a Ouija board normally has a triangle pendant that is moved for users to communicate with spirits, the Holy Spirit Board has a golden-colored cross.

Calling the game “disturbing” and “deceptive,” EWTN News Nightly host Tracy Sabol asked Caro what Christians who were tricked into buying the game should do.

Besides getting rid of the board immediately, Caro encouraged Christians who have bought the game to “repent and ask God for liberation” by going to confession and asking the priest to give an extra blessing for protection.

Pope Francis returns home after brief hospital stay
01 April 2023, 11:11

Pope Francis is discharged from the A. Gemelli University hospital on Saturday morning.
By Vatican News staff reporter

Pope Francis was released from Gemelli Hospital on Saturday morning following a brief hospital stay that involved scheduled tests and treatment for bronchitis.

In a brief statement Saturday morning, the Holy See Press Office noted that, before his departure, the Holy Father greeted the leadership of the hospital, including Franco Anelli, the Rector of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart; Marco Elefanti, the General Director of the Policlinic; and the General Ecclesiastical Assistant for the hospital, Bishop Claudio Giuliodori, as well as the medical team and healthcare workers who assisted him during his convalescence.

The Agostino Gemelli University Policlinic, the largest hospital in Rome, is the teaching hospital for the Catholic University’s medical school. The hospital is named for Franciscan Friar Agostino Gemelli, a physician and psychologist, who was also the founder and first rector of the University.

As he left the hospital, Pope Francis stopped his car briefly to greet those present, pausing for a moment to embrace and pray with a couple who had lost their daughter during the night.

Pope: Modern neocolonialism is a crime and a threat to peace
01 April 2023, 16:00

In a message addressed to a workshop in the Vatican on neocolonialism, Pope Francis warns against modern economic and ideological colonialism and again, apologizes for those Christians who contributed to the colonization of Africa and the Americas.
By Lisa Zengarini

“No power - political, economic, ideological - is entitled to unilaterally determine the identity of a nation or social group,” Pope Francis told a forum of judges for social rights gathered this week in the Vatican for an African and American intercontinental workshop on modern neocolonialism.

“The subjugation and plunder of peoples through the use of force or cultural and political penetration is a crime (…) because there are no chances for peace in a world that discards populations and oppresses to loot,” the Pope wrote in a message to the participants.

New interview: Pope Francis gives an extensive interview to Argentina's television network, Canal 5 de Noticias

Pope gives interview to Argentine television network
01 April 2023, 15:37

On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of his pontificate, Pope Francis gives an extensive interview to Argentina's television network, Canal 5 de Noticias, where he addresses a wide range of topics, from memories of his election in 2013 to events in his country, from peace to Church issues.
By Sebastián Sansón Ferrari

Pope Francis has given a wide-ranging interview to Argentina's Canal 5 de Noticias television network, coinciding with the tenth anniversary of his pontificate. The Pope addressed a host of issues, some already addressed in other interviews he has given in recent weeks for the anniversary. In addition to subjects such as promoting world peace, the war in Ukraine, the Church's efforts to combat abuse, and the importance of patriotism, he also delved into issues relating to his homeland, Argentina.

Internal struggles

Journalist Gustavo Sylvestre asked the Pope about what he said at the General Audience on 15 March 2023. The Pope thanked Argentine government leaders and opposition parties for coming together to sign a letter of greetings for him, while he also urged them to always agree to come together to talk, discuss, and work for the progress of the nation. He went on to say that often people like to see other people's infighting or to argue about anything, but he warned that "our infighting is harmful, it is stronger than the sense of belonging, it destroys political affiliation," and you end up with "different political parties that have no political power of bringing people together."

Regarding the rise of extremist parties, the Pope said the antidote is social justice. "There is no other," he added. "If you want to discuss with a politician, an ultra-right thinker, talk about social justice, talk horizontally," he advised, as a way to bring people together on the theme that needs addressing.

Striving for Justice

With respect to the instrumentalization of justice, the Pope said that "lawfare begins through the media, which denigrates and insinuates suspicion of a crime committed. Huge investigations are created and the volume of these investigations is enough to condemn, even if the crime [violation of the law] is not found". In this regard, the Pope said that "we need to raise our voices, we need to say: there is an irregularity here... politicians have this mission to unmask a justice that is not fair."

Here is Pope Francis’ schedule for Holy Week and Easter 2023
By Hannah Brockhaus
Rome Newsroom, Apr 1, 2023 / 05:00 am

Palm Sunday marks the start of one of the most full and beautiful liturgical periods of the Catholic Church year.

It is also one of the busiest liturgical periods at the Vatican, where Pope Francis has been scheduled to preside over nine Masses, liturgies, and devotions between April 2 and Easter Monday, April 10.

With Pope Francis having been hospitalized on March 29 for a respiratory infection, it was unclear if he would be well enough to participate in any or some of the liturgies.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni confirmed on April 1 as Pope Francis was discharged from the hospital that the pope is still planning to be present for Palm Sunday Mass on April 2. Pope Francis will preside over the liturgies with a cardinal celebrating at the altar.

Here is the Vatican’s full schedule for Holy Week and Easter 2023:

Synod Continental Stage comes to conclusion
01 April 2023, 14:06

The second stage of the synodal process, the worldwide Continental Stage, has come to a conclusion, but dialogue with the People of God continues. The General Secretariat of the Synod elaborated on the process in a statement to mark the final day of the Continental Stage, Friday, 31 March 2023.
By Vatican News

The broad-based consultation of the People of God around the world has officially finished its "continental stage," consisting of a time of listening, dialogue, and discernment among the Churches of the same geographical area. This process came after the "Local Stage" of diocesan and national meetings. Both experiences represent a new style of dialogue, engagement, and involvement of the faithful presented by this synodal process.

The Sanctuary of Lourdes may remove Rupnik’s mosaics out of respect for victims

Mosaic art created by Father Marko Rupnik could be removed from the Basilica of the Sanctuary of Lourdes, France, out of consideration for victims of abuse who come to the sanctuary in search of consolation, the bishop of Tarbes and Lourdes said.

“Lourdes is a place where many victims turn to the Immaculate Conception for comfort and healing. Their anguish is great before the mosaics of Father Rupnik in this very place: We cannot ignore it,” Bishop Jean-Marc Micas said in a statement released Friday.

Rupnik, a Jesuit priest and artist, founded the Aletti Center, an art school in Rome dedicated to religious art. He has been accused of sexually and psychologically abusing consecrated women from the Loyola Community in Slovenia who were associated with the Aletti Center.

As the National Catholic Register reported earlier this year, Rupnik’s art decorates more than 200 churches and shrines around the world, including at Lourdes, Fatima, and the Vatican.

Pope at Mass: Jesus turns our hearts of stone to hearts of flesh
02 April 2023, 11:00

In his Palm Sunday Mass, Pope Francis reflects on the faith Jesus placed in God, abandoning himself in his moment of pain because he knew that God's reason would save him.
By Francesca Merlo

Pope Francis presided at the Solemn Mass for Palm Sunday of the Lord's Passion this morning, his first public appearance after being released from Rome's Gemelli Hospital on Saturday April 1st. An estimated sixty thousand faithful took part in the the celebration that concluded with the recitation of the Angelus prayer.

In his homily following the recitation of the Passion, Pope Francis reflected on Christ's cry from the Cross: 'My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?' "Those words bring us to the very heart of Christ’s Passion, the culmination of the sufferings He endured for our salvation," the Pope said, noting that these are the only words from the Cross reported in St Matthew's Gospel."

Pope extends deadline to appeal dismissal from religious institutes
03 April 2023, 12:54

In an Apostolic Letter issued motu proprio, Pope Francis extends to thirty days the deadline for consecrated persons who are dismissed from religious institutes to appeal the judgment against them, a change which seeks to guarantee the person's rights.
By Salvatore Cernuzio

In order to guarantee a more definite and adequate protection of the rights of persons who are dismissed from Institutes of Consecrated Life – resulting in a change in their juridical status - Pope Francis has decided to lengthen the time in which it is possible to submit an appeal to the competent authority.

Those dismissed from such Institutes will now have “thirty days” to present their appeal, and will no longer need “to request in writing the revocation or correction of the decree to its author.”

The previous deadline had been ten days for the Latin Church, and fifteen for the Eastern Churches.

03 April 2023, 13:08

Pope Francis receives in audience executives and employees of the Italian National Institute of Social Security (INPS), turning 125 this year, and calls for sustainable social security policies for the sake of the new generations and those to come, while decrying the “demographic winter” in Italy.
By Lisa Zengarini

Pope Francis has urged Italian policymakers to make social security economically and socially sustainable, keeping in mind the common good of present and future generations.

He did so when addressing 400 executives and employees of the Italian National Institute of Social Security (INPS) in the Vatican on Monday.

“We need wise politicians, guided by the criterion of fraternity”, who avoid “wasting resources when available and leaving future generations in serious difficulty”, he said.

Pope Francis on Tuesday accepted the resignation of Archbishop Michael O. Jackels from the pastoral government of the Archdiocese of Dubuque, Iowa.

An April 4 statement from the United States bishops’ conference said Jackels’ resignation was for health reasons.

Bishop Emeritus Richard E. Pates of Des Moines, Iowa, has been appointed apostolic administrator of the Archdiocese of Dubuque, the USCCB communication said.

Jackels, who will turn 69 on April 13, has been archbishop of Dubuque since May 2013. He is scheduled to offer the archdiocese’s Chrism Mass in the Cathedral of St. Raphael in the afternoon on April 4.

Report: Chinese bishop appointed to Shanghai without Vatican approval
By Hannah Brockhaus
Vatican City, Apr 4, 2023 / 09:56 am

A Chinese bishop was installed Tuesday as the bishop of Shanghai without the Vatican’s approval, according to Asia News.

The report says Bishop Joseph Shen Bin of Haimen was appointed to lead the Diocese of Shanghai by the Council of Chinese Bishops, the state-sanctioned bishops’ conference.

Shen Bin is also the head of the Council of Chinese Bishops, Asia News reported.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said Tuesday that “the Holy See had been informed a few days ago of the decision of the Chinese authorities to transfer [Shen Bin from Haimen to Shanghai] and learned from the media of the installation this morning.”

He said he had nothing to add to the Holy See’s assessment of the bishop’s transfer for the time being.

The Asia News report said the installation of Shen Bin as bishop of Shanghai happened without the Vatican’s approval and therefore in violation of the Vatican-China deal on the appointment of bishops.

Francis causes controversy in Brazil for saying Lula was victim of lawfare

SÃO PAULO – During an interview with an Argentinian TV station aired on March 30, Pope Francis claimed that Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, convicted of bribery and imprisoned in 2018, and former President Dilma Rousseff, impeached due to alleged budgetary manipulation in 2016, were both victims of judicial persecution.

His comments sparked anger among the supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro and other conservatives.

The pontiff’s one-hour-long interview with journalist Gustavo Sylvestre of the Argentinian news channel C5N was recorded prior to his hospitalization on March 29. They discussed several themes, including Latin American politics and the Argentinian upcoming elections in October.

At this point, Sylvestre asked him about the lawfare thesis, the alleged instrumentalization of the juridical system by political forces in order to persecute and criminalize electoral opponents.

Many left-wing leaders in the region claim that they have been subjected to lawfare, like Argentinian Vice President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, convicted in 2022 for corruption, and Lula, who was going to run for president against Bolsonaro in 2018 and ended up being arrested and impeded to do so.

“Lawfare begins… the means of communication open the way. ‘We have to prevent that person from reaching that office,’ and then they hit the person. […] They disqualify the person and raise suspicions of a crime,” described Pope Francis.

The pontiff added that a huge casefile is then produced, one that does not contain evidence of a crime, but “the (large) volume of the summary” is enough to get the person convicted.
