Pope Francis begins visit to Hungary in hopes of building bridges
28 April 2023, 08:21

Pope Francis sets off on his three-day Apostolic Visit to Hungary aboard the papal plane bound for Budapest, following a meeting at the Casa Santa Marta with a group of 15 homeless people.
By Devin Watkins

The papal plane took off from Rome’s Fiumicino Airport on Friday morning at 8:21 AM, as Pope Francis began his Apostolic Journey to Hungary.

Ahead of his departure, the Pope met briefly with 15 people who sleep rough around St. Peter's Basilica, who were accompanied to the Casa Santa Marta by Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, the Prefect of the Dicastery for the Service of Charity.

Departure guaranteed

The ITA Airways A320 neo is scheduled to arrive in Budapest, the Hungarian capital, at around 10:00 AM (GMT+2).

As a side note, a former employee of Alitalia (now ITA Airways), told Vatican News that the Italian flag carrier has always guaranteed the Pope’s departure by preparing two identical planes with all the trimmings, in case either were to experience last-minute technical difficulties that could hinder or delay takeoff.

In Hungary, Pope Francis will kick off his Apostolic Visit with the customary encounter with the EU nation’s president and prime minister, speaking also to civil servants and diplomatic corps.

During his three days in Budapest, the Pope will meet with the local Church’s clergy and ministers, as well as with young people and refugees.

Sunday will see him celebrate Mass in Budapest’s Kossuth Lajos Square for the country’s Catholic faithful, which make up around 37 percent of the population.

By Joseph Tulloch

Pope Francis has arrived in Budapest, Hungary, for his 41st Apostolic Journey abroad.

His first stop upon arrival in the central European nation was Sándor Palace, the official residence of the President of Hungary.

Following a private meeting with President Katalin Novák, Pope Francis met with Viktor Orbán, the country’s Prime Minister.

Official welcome

The Pope arrived at Sándor Palace at 11:18 local time, and was greeted with a guard of honour. The national anthems of both Hungary and the Vatican City were played, and the Pope greeted the President and Prime Minister, as well as other Hungarian officials.

Following this official welcome, the Pope and President Novák entered the palace and made for its Empire Hall, where official photographs were taken, and the Pope signed the country’s Book of Honour, writing in Italian:

“I come as a pilgrim and friend to Hungary, a country rich in history and culture; in Budapest, city of bridges and of saints, I think of all Europe, and pray that, in unity and solidarity, it might be in our times too a house of peace and a prophecy of welcome.”

Pope Francis to Church leaders in Hungary: Risen Christ is the future
28 April 2023, 18:00

Meeting with Hungarian bishops, priests, deacons, consecrated men and women, seminarians, and pastoral workers, Pope Francis calls for “the grace of discernment,” to enable us to approach our own times with openness and a” prophetic spirit”.
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis’ message on Friday to Hungarian Church leaders – bishops, priests, deacons, consecrated women and men, seminarians, and pastoral workers – focused on the centrality of the Risen Christ, who is “indeed our future.”

Prophetic receptivity

In the face of the challenges of the modern world, the Pope warned against two contrary temptations of “bleak defeatism” and “worldly conformism.”

Instead, he said, the Church is called to a “prophetic receptivity” based on the Gospel, which gives us “the grace of discernment, enabling us to approach our own times with openness, but also with a prophetic spirit.”

Recalling Christ’s parable of the fig tree, Pope Francis explained that we are called to be open to the signs of the times, and to see the changes and challenges of the modern world “as a fruitful plant pointing to the time of the Lord’s future coming.”

Pope Francis upholds "Billings Revolution"
28 April 2023, 13:45

In a message to participants in the WOOMB International Congress Rome on the Billings Method, Pope Francis highlights its ongoing contribution to the understanding of human sexuality and to a fuller appreciation of the relational and procreative dimensions of the couple, saying that use of methods based on the natural rhythms of fertility should be encouraged.
By Lisa Zengarini

Pope Francis has called for a “new revolution” in today’s way of thinking human sexuality, after the so-called sexual revolution and the breakdown of taboos in the Sixties, by refocusing on its strict connection with the fundamental vocation of each person which is the “gift of self”.

The beauty of human sexuality

“We need to discover the beauty of human sexuality by once again turning to the great book of nature, learning to respect the value of the body and the generation of life, with a view to authentic experiences of conjugal love”, the Pope wrote in a message addressed to participants in the WOOMB International Congress hosted from 28-29 April by the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome.

WOOMB is a U.S. based organization founded in the 1970’s to help spread the Billings Ovulation Method for natural family planning, which was pioneered in 1953  by Australian physician John Billings and his wife Evelyn as an alternative  to artificial contraception. As such this method is endorsed by the Catholic Church, as well as being approved by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Pope Francis visits Blessed Laszlo home for blind children in Budapest
29 April 2023, 09:11

Pope Francis makes a private visit to the Blessed László Batthyány-Strattmann Institute, a centre for blind children and children with disabilities in Budapest, and thanks the Hungarian children for their songs and witness of life.
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis began the second day of his Apostolic Journey to Hungary with a visit to the Blessed László Batthyány-Strattmann Catholic Social Institution, Kindergarten, Primary School, and Special Children’s Home for the Blind.

The Holy Father was welcomed to the Institute by its directory, György Inotay, who greeted the Pope with the Franciscan prayer for peace, which he read in Latin.

After a short tour of the facilities, Pope Francis attended a concert with works primarily by Hungarian composers. Following the concert, the Pope met with some of the children cared for in the home.

Pope in Hungary: 'Church must speak the language of charity'
29 April 2023, 11:00

On the second day of Pope Francis’ Apostolic Visit to Hungary, he meets with a group of refugees and poor people assisted by Catholic associations, and says genuine faith challenges us to encounter the poor and speak the language of charity.
By Linda Bordoni

About a six hundred refugees and poor people gathered at St. Elizabeth's Church in Budapest, to listen first-hand to Pope Francis’ words of closeness for those he carries closest to his heart. Some one thousand others filled Rózsák Square outside.

Some were able to offer their testimonies of life marked by persecution, fear and flight.

The Pope said he was moved by the stories, and he reflected on the testimony brought by Oleg and his family who fled the horrors of war in Ukraine.

“Their journey to the future,” brought them to Hungary, he said, and “began with a journey of memory because Oleg remembered the warm welcome he received in Hungary years ago when he came to work here as a cook.”

Pope Francis blesses Greek Catholic Church in Hungary
29 April 2023, 11:38

Pope Francis pays a visit to the Greek Catholic community in Budapest, as he prays with the Catholics of the Byzantine rite in the Church of the Protection of the Mother of God.
By Francesca Merlo

Pope Francis paid a brief visit to the Greek Catholic community in Budapest on Saturday morning, the second day of his Apostolic Journey to Hungary.

After meeting with migrants and refugees at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, the Holy Father travelled to the nearby Protection of the Mother of God Church, located in the 7th Disctrict's Rose Square, which serves the Catholic faithful of the Byzantine rite.

The Pope was welcomed at the entrance by Archbishop Péter Fülöp Kocsis, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Hajdúdorog, and together they walked to the Iconostasis, while the choir sang in the background.

After a brief greeting with the Archbishop there was a moment of prayer, led by Pope Francis, with the community. The Pope was handed a cross and blessed the Greek Catholic community of Hungary.

Pope tells young Hungarians to aim high in life
29 April 2023, 14:42

Pope Francis meets with young people at the Papp László Sport Arena in Budapest and encourages them to “aim high in life”, reminding them that no one can take their place in the history of the Church and the world.
By Lisa Zengarini

“Invest in the great goals of life! Then, train through dialogue with Jesus, who is the best of coaches”. In the last public event of the second day of his Apostolic Journey to Hungary, Pope Francis encouraged youths to “aim high” in their lives, overcoming their fears and stepping forward, always dialoguing with Jesus, their best friend and brother.

The event, attended by some 12,000 people, was introduced by the greeting speech of the Hungarian lead bishop for Youth Ministry, Bishop Ferenc Palánki, and the testimonies of four youths: Bertalan, Dóra, two high-school students, Tódor, a young Greek-Catholic, and Krisztina, a university student.

Pope meets with Metropolitan Hilarion in Budapest
29 April 2023, 16:10

Pope Francis holds a “cordial” meeting at the Apostolic Nunciature with the Russian Orthodox Metropolitan Archbishop of Budapest and Hungary, who previously served as the head of the Department of External Relations of the Patriarchate of Moscow.
By Vatican News staff reporter

After his morning appointments on the second day of his visit to Hungary, Pope Francis met privately on Saturday with Archbishop Hilarion, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Budapest and Hungary, in the Apostolic Nunciature where he is staying.

The former Metropolitan of Volokolamsk, Russia, was appointed to this post in June 2022, after serving for thirteen years as head of the Department of External Relations of the Patriarchate of Moscow, and was known informally as Patriarch Kirill's "foreign minister".

A cordial meeting

The possibility of a meeting with Archbishop Hilarion had been anticipated by the Director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, on 21 April, during his briefing on Pope Francis’ Apostolic Journey to Hungary. Mr. Bruni stated, however, that an audience was not a part of the official agenda.

As reported by the Holy See, the audience, which took place with the help of an interpreter, was cordial and lasted about 20 minutes.

The Holy Father greeted the Metropolitan with a hug and kissed his pectoral cross.

The Good Shepherd calls us to ‘open our hearts to love,’ Pope Francis says at Mass in Hungary

During an outdoor Mass in Budapest on Good Shepherd Sunday, Pope Francis called on Hungarians to be “open and inclusive,” reflecting on how Jesus wants his flock to share the abundant life they’ve received from him.

“Though we are diverse and come from different communities, the Lord has brought us together, so that his immense love can enfold us in one embrace,” the pope said in his April 30 homily, speaking in bright sunshine to more than 50,000 people gathered in and around the Hungarian capital’s picturesque Kossuth Lajos Square.

“[A]ll of us are called to cultivate relationships of fraternity and cooperation, avoiding divisions,” he said, “not retreating into our own community, not concerned to stake out our individual territory, but rather opening our hearts to mutual love.”

Prior to Mass, held outside the city’s majestic neo-Gothic Parliament building, the pope was transported in his wheelchair to a specially constructed altar platform flanked by banners in the colors of the Vatican and Hungarian flags and simply adorned with a towering wooden crucifix.

Cardinal Peter Erdő, the archbishop of Budapest, was the principal celebrant of the Mass; since the pope’s knee injury has impeded his mobility, he has called on cardinals to take his place at the altar.

Pope at Mass in Hungary: Christ calls us by name and sends us forth
30 April 2023, 10:12

Celebrating Sunday Mass in Budapest’s historic Kossuth Lajos Square, Pope Francis reflects on the image of the Good Shepherd, who knows His sheep and calls them by name, and then sends us forth to be witnesses of the Gospel.
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis began his third and final day in Budapest with the celebration of Holy Mass with tens of thousands of faithful gathered in Kossuth Lajos Square in central Budapest.

The Holy Father based his homily on the Gospel reading for the Fourth Sunday of Easter, which focuses on the figure of the Good Shepherd. A good shepherd, he said, “gives his life for his sheep.”

"Jesus, like a shepherd who goes in search of his flock, came to find us when we were lost," he said. "Like a shepherd, He came to snatch us from death."

Christ, the Good Shepherd, does two things in particular for His sheep, the Pope continued: He calls His sheep by name, and He leads them out.

Pope to Hungary's academicians: Knowledge is humility, justice and peace
30 April 2023, 16:30

Pope Francis addresses Hungary's academicians and scientists at the last public event of his Apostolic Visit, and urges them to always be humble and recall that knowledge is truth and that truth is freedom.
By Francesca Merlo

Pope Francis’ final meeting in Budapest took place at the Péter Pázmány Catholic University, where he spoke to representatives of Hungarian academicians and exponents of culture.

In his addresss, the Holy Father focused on the acquisition of knowledge, which he said “entails a constant planting of seeds that take root in the soil of reality and bear rich fruit.”

He recalled that Romano Guardini, “a great intellectual and a man of deep faith”, claimed that there were “two ways of ‘knowing’”: One is a gentle, relational knowledge and mastery, which Guardini described as “rule by service, creation out of natural possibilities, which does not transgress set limits”, and another which he described as not inspecting but analysing.
