Pope to Swiss Guards: Your service is a testimony of your faith
06 May 2023, 11:32

Pope Francis greets the officers and members of the Pontifical Swiss Guards, and encourages the new recruits to use their period of service at the Vatican to deepen their Catholic faith.
By Lisa Zengarini

Pope Francis received in audience the Swiss Guards on Saturday as they prepare for the traditional swearing-in ceremony of the new recruits which takes place every year on May 6.

The day marks the anniversary of the heroic sacrifice of 147 Swiss guards who died during the Sack of Rome in 1527 as they protected Pope Clement VII.

Extending his greetings to the Commander of the Swiss Guards, Colonel Christoph Graf, the Chaplain, Fr Kolumban Reichlin, all the Officers and other members of the Corps, Pope Francis acknowledged, in particular, the 23 new recruits who will swear in this afternoon at the Courtyard of Saint Damasus in the Vatican, with their families.

King Charles III formally crowned in London's Westminster Abbey
06 May 2023, 17:00

King Charles III and Queen Camilla

Britain’s new monarch King Charles III and his wife Queen Camilla are crowned on Saturday at Westminster Abbey in a religious ceremony rich with ancient traditions and pageantry. Aged 74, Charles is the oldest British monarch ever to be crowned having ascended to the throne upon the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II in September last year.
By Susy Hodges

The coronation of King Charles and his wife Queen Camilla was a day of lavish celebrations filled with pomp and pageantry but at its heart was a religious ceremony that traces its origins back over 1,000 years.

Thousands of dignitaries from Britain and across the world attended the coronation service in London’s Westminster Abbey.  The service was led by the head of the Anglican Communion, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby but other church and faith leaders also attended including the head of the Catholic Church in England and Wales, Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster, who read a prayer.

There was a powerful ecumenical moment right at the start of the coronation service when a silver processional cross containing two fragments of the True Cross gifted to King Charles by Pope Francis was carried up the aisle.  The Pope sent the precious relics to the king last month as an ecumenical gesture marking the centenary of the Anglican Church in Wales.

Pope at Regina Coeli: Heaven is our homeland
07 May 2023, 12:12

Pope Francis assures the faithful gathered in St Peter's Square that Heaven is their homeland, and he urges each of them to follow Jesus when they they find themselves wondering where to go and how to get there.
By Francesca Merlo

Addressing the faithful gathered in St Peter's Square for his Sunday Regina Coeli, Pope Francis noted that the day's Gospel Reading, which is taken from Jesus' last discourse before his death, shows us how even back then Jesus showed the disciples the way, thus reminding us that He does so today, too: "He tells us where to go and how to go there", said the Pope.

Pope to Spiritian Fathers: God creates something new in us when we allow Him
08 May 2023, 11:54

Pope Francis addresses a delegation of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, and encourages the Spiritan Fathers in their difficult mission to evangelize and serve the most abandoned people on the margins of society.
By Francesca Merlo

Addressing members of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit under the protection of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, also known as Spiritans, Pope Francis described their charism like the hand of God, who "caresses the people, caresses each one of you: the tender God who always caresses."

The Holy Father emphasised, in particular, some of the fundamental values of the religious order's charism: "courage, openness and abandonment to the action of the Spirit so that He might do a new thing."

The audience took place to mark the 175th anniversary of the re-foundation of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, which joined the original order with the Society of the Sacred Heart of Mary, in 1848.

Protection Commission announces new strategies to safeguard against abuse
08 May 2023, 14:31

As the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors’ plenary session in Rome comes to an end, Cardinal Seán Patrick O'Malley says the Pope “has asked a lot from us, and we are all committed to making this work.”
By Salvatore Cernuzio

A "new universal framework" to update Church guidelines; a fund with contributions from the Bishops' Conferences for training and assistance to victims; partnership with the GHR Foundation for safeguarding programmes; strategies to combat online child abuse; an in-depth study on the issue of vulnerability in its various forms; and, a strategic plan to focus on the needs of victims and survivors and address them in the Church's accountability mechanisms.

These new strategies represent the work carried out by members of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors during its Plenary Assembly.

Members took time to analyse and elaborate on the work of the Commission's ongoing and future work, in light of the Pope's call for continued efforts to improve standards of conduct, and safeguard the Church from the horrendous crime of sexual abuse.

Coptic Pope to visit Rome to mark 50 years since historic Coptic-Catholic agreement
08 May 2023, 12:03

As Pope Tawadros II prepares to travel to Rome to meet Pope Francis, the Coptic Orthodox Archbishop of London speaks to Vatican News about the "great love and respect" between the two leaders.
By Joseph Tulloch

Exactly fifty years ago, the heads of the Coptic Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches signed a historic Christological agreement, putting an end to a 1,500-year old theological controversy and ushering in a new era of Coptic-Catholic relations.

To mark the occasion, Pope Tawadros II, the head of the Coptic Orthodox Church, will be in Rome this week.

He will speak at Pope Francis’ General Audience on Wednesday – the first time the head of another Church has done so – and pray with him privately on Thursday. On Sunday, he will preside over a Liturgy in the Basilica of St John Lateran, the Pope’s official cathedral.

At his side throughout the week will be Archbishop Angaelos, the Coptic Orthodox Bishop of London.

He spoke to Vatican News about the upcoming visit, stressing that the initial encounter in 1973 between the two Popes was “pivotal” to the ecumenical movement.

Archbishop Angaelos also described the “great love and respect” between the current leaders of the Coptic Orthodox and Catholic Churches.

The following transcript has been lightly edited for reasons of style and brevity.

Pope Francis and Pope Tawadros II praise ongoing Catholic-Coptic dialogue
09 May 2023, 11:01

Pope Francis and the Coptic Orthodox Pope Tawadros II release a jointly-written preface for a new book, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the historic “Joint Christological Declaration” that continues to strengthen ties between the Catholic and Coptic Churches.
By Devin Watkins

As the Catholic and Coptic Orthodox Churches mark fifty years since the first modern meeting between their leaders, Pope Francis and Pope Tawadros II have penned a joint preface for a new book.

Set to hit bookshelves on Wednesday, the book is entitled “The Catholic Church and the Coptic Orthodox Church. 50th Anniversary of the Meeting between Pope Paul VI and Pope Shenouda III (1973-2023)”.

The preface, released on Tuesday, traces the path of dialogue which led to that historic encounter and the fruits which it has borne over the last half century.

Pope to Hungary's Jesuits: 'Young people need consistent witness'
09 May 2023, 14:40

The Jesuit Review 'La Civiltà Cattolica' publishes the exchange between Pope Francis and his Jesuit confreres in Budapest, during his Apostolic Journey to Hungary.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

While in Budapest, Pope Francis met on 29 April with his Jesuit brothers ministering in Hungary for a private moment of conversation.

On Tuesday, the Jesuit review La Civilta Cattolica published the exchange between the Pope and his fellow Jesuits, which took place in the Apostolic Nunciature in the Hungarian capital on the second day of his Apostolic Visit to Hungary.

The full text of the conversation, written and published by Fr. Antonio Spadaro, the Editor-in-Chief of La Civiltà Cattolica, can be read on the publication's website.

The Holy Father normally reserves a private moment to meet with his Jesuit brothers during his Apostolic Journeys, where he responds to questions in an informal conversation with those gathered.

Fr. Spadaro introduced the conversation by recalling the Holy Father warmly greeting, one by one, the 32 Jesuits present, and encouraging them to freely ask him whatever they pleased.

The questions during the encounter were wide-ranging, but several focused on how to properly minister to young people and young seminarians.

Pope: Food access must be guaranteed during times of war
10 May 2023, 11:18

Pope Francis calls for increased global efforts to guarantee access to food, especially during times of war and the war in Ukraine, as he encourages participants in the Conference “Food and Humanitarian Crises: Science and Policies for their Prevention and Mitigation,” sponsored by the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

It is a pressing challenge to relieve the sufferings of so many of our brothers and sisters who lack healthy eating and access to sufficient food, and to ensure war and crises, especially the war in Ukraine, do not prevent food from reaching those in need.

With this observation, Pope Francis encouraged the efforts of participants in the Conference “Food and Humanitarian Crises: Science and Policies for their Prevention and Mitigation” sponsored by the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.

The two-day conference concludes on Wednesday in the Vatican's Casina Pio IV, the Academy's headquarters located in the Vatican Gardens.

Coptic Pope addresses pilgrims at General Audience with Pope Francis
10 May 2023, 10:15

Pope Francis with Coptic Pope Tawadros II  (Vatican Media)

Pope Tawadros II, head of the Coptic Orthodox Church, speaks at the Wednesday General Audience with Pope Francis, fifty years to the day after a historic Christological agreement between their two Churches.
By Joseph Tulloch

Pope Francis was joined at his weekly General Audience by Pope Tawadros II, the head of the Coptic Orthodox Church, for a special joint greeting to the faithful.

Pope Tawadros addressed the crowd gathered in St Peter’s Square, the first time the head of another Church has done so.

Tawadros’ greetings

“Beloved brother, His Holiness Pope Francis,” said Pope Tawadros, “Christ is risen, He is truly risen!”

The Coptic Orthodox leader recalled his last visit to St Peter’s Square, ten years ago today. “I look at this place,” he said, “and I go back in my memory to ten years ago, on this same date, and I remember your dear affection in welcoming me, together with the delegation of the Coptic Church.”

Pope Tawadros recalled that, on that occasion, on 10 May 2013, he had suggested that the date be celebrated as a ‘Day of Coptic-Catholic Friendship’. Since then, he said, he and Pope Francis have spoken over the phone on that day every year.

The Coptic Orthodox leader went on to thank Francis for his visit to Egypt in 2017, recalling that the country – where his Church is based – has ancient Christian roots, and was the birthplace of monasticism.

“Despite the differences in our roots and affiliations,” he said, “we are united by the love of Christ who dwells within us, and the host of our Apostolic Fathers and saints which surrounds and guides us.”

Pope: Rabbi Skorka shows that 'faith and human rights are not in conflict'
10 May 2023, 13:13

As the Department of Theology of the University of Trnava, in Slovakia, confers an honorary doctorate on Argentinean writer and biophysicist Rabbi Abraham Skorka, Pope Francis sends his long-time friend a letter to congratulate him and recall his commitment to interreligious dialogue.
By Tiziana Campisi

In a letter released on Wednesday, Pope Francis has congratulated Rabbi Abraham Skorka, from Argentina, who was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Faculty of Theology of the University of Trnava, in Slovakia, run by the Jesuits, for his contribution to the advancement of Jewish-Christian and interreligious dialogue and for promoting tolerance in the fields of science and education.

In the missive, read during the ceremony, the Pope expressed gratitude to his long-time friend for his commitment and for having positively influenced, in his 42 years of pedagogical and academic activity, "two generations of rabbis, as well as Catholic and Protestant theologians, fully respecting the academic aspects of theology."

ASIF 2022 report: More 'incisive' efforts in financial transparency
10 May 2023, 15:18

The Vatican’s Supervisory and Financial Information Authority publishes its annual report for the fiscal year 2022, detailing the ASIF’s efforts to increase financial transparency through active participation in MONEYVAL and Egmont programs, as well as international information sharing to prevent tax evasion.
By Vatican News

One hundred twenty-eight cases of suspicious activity reports received in 2022, 124 from the Institute for the Works of Religion (IOR) alone, some of which led to five suspensions. Nineteen reports forwarded to the Vatican’s Office of the Promoter of Justice. Sixty-seven international memoranda of understanding signed so far, the latest with North Macedonia and the Cayman Islands.

According to its annual report released on Wednesday, the Vatican’s Supervisory and Financial Information Authority (ASIF), established by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010 to combat money laundering and terrorist financing and financial intelligence, continues its “incisive” work.

The 2022 annual report traces the activities carried out by the ASIF over the past twelve months, and notes the contributions made “internally” and “externally”, as well as the participation "without interruption or hesitation" in the programs of international fora such as Egmont and MONEYVAL.

Pope to Tawadros II: May our friendship never stop growing
11 May 2023, 10:01

Pope Francis greets Coptic Orthodox Pope Tawadros II and recalls the history of relations between Copts and Catholics as they strive to maintain a friendship that never stops growing.
By Francesca Merlo

Pope Francis on Thursday addressed Coptic-Orthodox Pope Tawadros II and his delegation, who are in Rome to celebrate 50 years of Coptic and Catholic relationships, as well as the tenth anniversary of their first meeting in 2013.

In his speech, Pope Francis noted that "in the ecumenical journey, it is important to always look ahead". He advised that we always ask ourselves "how far do we still have to go?"

However, he continued, it is also necessary to always remember, especially in times of discouragment, "to rejoice in the path already travelled and to draw on the fervour of the pioneers who have gone before us."

Pope to Caritas Internationalis: Continue sharing God's love in charity
11 May 2023, 12:27

Pope Francis meets with participants in the General Assembly of Caritas Internationalis, and thanks the confederation of Catholic relief agencies for their tireless efforts and loving charity across the globe.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Continue reciprocating God's love, Pope Francis said on Thursday, as he encouraged members of the representative council and staff of the Pontifical Foundation Caritas Internationalis in the Vatican.

Caritas Internationalis is a confederation of over 160 members who are working at the grassroots in almost every country of the world. Caritas, inspired by the Catholic faith, helps by reaching out to the poor, vulnerable, and excluded, regardless of race or religion, to build a world based on justice and fraternal love.

In his remarks, the Holy Father praised their immense charitable work globally, done out of love and replicating the love of Christ.

"We must never forget that, at the origin of all our charitable and social activity, is Christ Himself who, 'having loved His own who were in the world, loved them to the end.'

Pope to missionaries: ‘Proclaim Christ above all by your witness of life’
11 May 2023, 13:16

Pope Francis reminds Italian missionaries that through embodying Christ in prayer and listening, they will achieve “the salvation of the brothers and sisters which the Lord entrusts to them.”
By Rechilda Estores

Pope Francis met Thursday with members of the Italian Conference of Missionary Institutes, as the group celebrates the 50th anniversary since their establishment.

“For half a century you have dedicated yourselves to promoting the mission ad gentes in Italy, making yourselves the voice of thousands of missionaries who devote themselves to the proclamation of Christ,” Pope said.

He expressed that the Church is missionary by her very nature and has a responsibility to the people. "The whole Church is missionary, and the work of evangelization is a fundamental duty of the People of God."

These missionary works are vital to the Christian faith, he added, saying, “Mission is oxygen for Christian life, which without it becomes sick and withers.”

Pope's Migrants Day Message: Free to migrate or to stay
11 May 2023, 11:30

Pope Francis releases his message for the 109th World Day of Migrants and Refugees, which focuses on the theme, "Free to choose whether to migrate or to stay"
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

"Free to choose whether to migrate or to stay," is the title of Pope Francis’ Message for the 109th World Day of Migrants and Refugees, which the Church observes on the last Sunday of September, which this year falls on September 24.

In his message, the Holy Father recognizes the migratory flows of our times are produced by a complex and varied phenomenon that, to be properly understood, "require a careful analysis of every aspect of its different stages, from departure to arrival, including the possibility of return."

To contribute to this effort, the Pope said he devoted this year's Message "to the freedom that should always mark the decision to leave one’s native land."

Pope Francis: Family is the future of society
12 May 2023, 12:05

Speaking at a conference in Rome on Italy's dearth of babies, Pope Francis highlights the urgent need for joint efforts to support families to address the demographic crisis, warning that “savage” free-market conditions are preventing young people from having children.
By Lisa Zengarini

Parents, and especially women, need more support and security if countries such as Italy are to reverse the course of the  “demographic winter”, Pope Francis said on Friday.

Addressing participants in the third edition of the “General States of Births”, meeting in Rome this week and attended by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, the Pope highlighted that the issue of birth rates is crucial for the future of our societies.

“Indeed, the birth of children is the main indicator for measuring the hope of a people,” he said. “If few are born, it means that there is little hope.”

The Ordinary Council of the General Secretariat of the Synod approves the 'Instrumentum laboris' (working document) for the first session of the Synod on Synodality, as well as the methodology of the Assembly.
By Christopher Wells

In “an atmosphere of great fraternity” marked by moments of prayer and personal reflection, the Ordinary Council of the General Secretariat of the Synod met this week in Rome to discuss the working document for the General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops.

The document, which is set to be published in early June, will guide discussions at the first meeting of the General Assembly in October. The Assembly will meet for the second part of its deliberations the following year.

During their meeting, members of the Council along with various consultants “reviewed, amended, and approved the Instrumentum laboris,” as well as the methodology for the upcoming Assembly.
