Pope to WUCWO: Women’s capacity for self-giving can bring peace to world
13 May 2023, 11:45

Pope Francis meets with the World Union of Catholic Women’s Organizations, and encourages women to help others find peace through their capacity to build relationships.
By Devin Watkins

The World Union of Catholic Women’s Organizations, or WUCWO, held a special rally in the Vatican’s Paul VI Hall on Saturday, as the umbrella group gears up to hold its General Assembly in Assisi on 14-20 May.

Pope Francis encouraged the 1,500 women to find inspiration in their mission by looking to the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

In his address, the Pope expressed his hopes that the women may be enlivened by the Spirit while keeping in mind the founding principles of WUCWO.

He urged them to “look to the future with your eyes and heart open to the world, to listen to the lament of so many women in the world who suffer injustice, abandonment, discrimination, and poverty.”

Pope: Food must never be used as a weapon
13 May 2023, 11:59

Pope Francis reflects on the “vocation” of those who work in agriculture and participate in food production and on their responsibility to help ensure that food distribution may never become a weapon or element of speculation.
By Linda Bordoni

Those who work the land, who care for the crops and for livestock, Pope Francis said, are prime witnesses of the integral ecology the world is in need of, and he highlighted their responsibility in ensuring that food production and distribution never become a weapon of war or a mechanism of economic or political speculation.

Addressing a group of young farmers from Spain – members of the Asociación Agraria Jóvenes Agricultores - during an audience in the Vatican on Saturday, 13 May, the Pope recalled his own first-hand experience of the farming world as, he said, “Argentina is a country mainly dedicated to livestock farming and, although I am from the city, I have had the opportunity to get to know the reality of the fields.”

Speaking off-cuff he recalled an episode during his theology formation in which he found himself in a field and the city-born students expressed concern for “a dying cow”.

“The poor cow was there, giving birth. But being from the city, having eaten cement since I was a kid, I had no idea how to tell the difference between a dying cow and a cow giving birth, right? That's when I realised that there is a science that can only be acquired through living and experience,” he said.

Pope Francis reforms Vatican City State’s ‘Constitution’
13 May 2023, 12:00

Pope Francis issues a new Fundamental Law, replacing that of the year 2000, "to respond to the needs of our times". It makes all international commitments undertaken by the Holy See operative for the State as well. The Pontifical Commission is no longer restricted to cardinals, but laymen and women will also be able to take part, and it also envisages more stringent regulations for the provisional and final consultative budget.
By Salvatore Cernuzio

In order to "respond to the needs of our times" and to “render operational” situations that stem from the international commitments undertaken by the Apostolic See "with the renewed requirements that such a specific aspect demands", the Pope today, 13 May, the liturgical Feast of Our Lady of Fatima, issued a new Fundamental Law of Vatican City State.

The Pope thus renews the 'Constitution' of Vatican City State, replacing the one dated 26 November 2000, issued by Saint John Paul II, which in turn succeeded the one issued on 7 June 1929 by Pius XI.

The reform, therefore, comes the framework of the numerous reforms carried out during these ten years of the pontificate. The Law, in fact, "assumes and completes" the regulatory updates already issued and the institutional profiles made operational in the State with the reform of the Law on the sources of law, of the Law on the Governance of Vatican City State, and of the Law that regulates the judicial system.

As provided for in the "Constitution" of 2000, the Pope confirms "the fullness of authority" of the Supreme Pontiff "which includes “the fullness of legislative, executive and judicial powers".

Pope Francis gives Ukrainian President a sculpture of an olive branch
13 May 2023, 15:34

Pope Francis receives in private audience Volodymir Zelensky, President of Ukraine. Zelensky is in Rome where he has met with the Italian Premiere, Giorgia Meloni, and with President Sergio Mattarella.
By Linda Bordoni

Volodymir Zelensky’s car was escorted into the Vatican just minutes after 4 pm local time on Saturday, and the Ukrainian President was welcomed into the Apostolic Palace for his meeting with Pope Francis.

“It’s a great honour,” Zelensky said to the Pope who thanked him for his visit.

The two leaders spent time in conversation aided by a translator, Fr Marko Gongalo, a Polish priest who works at the Secretariat of State.

The meeting, which lasted some 40 minutes, focused on the humanitarian and political situation in Ukraine following the ongoing war.

The Holy Father assured the President of his constant prayers, as witnessed by his numerous public appeals and invocations to the Lord for peace.

They agreed on the ongoing requirement to continue providing humanitarian aid to the population, and the Pope highlighted, in particular, the need for "gestures of humanity" towards the most fragile, the innocent victims of the conflict."

Bishop of Hong Kong: ‘Bridge church’ challenged to connect diverse parts
12 May 2023, 12:32

In an interview with La Civiltà Cattolica's Editor-in-Chief, Fr. Antonio Spadaro, S.J., Bishop Stephen Chow of Hong Kong discusses his visit to Beijing last April and the mission of the Diocese of Hong Kong in the Church.
Vatican News

“Our diocese has received from Pope John Paul II the mission to be a ‘bridge church’,” says Hong Kong Bishop Stephen Chow in an interview with Father Antonio Spadaro, the editor of the Jesuit review La Civiltà Cattolica.

“The greatest challenge” for his particular Church, says Bishop Chow, “is to connect the different and opposing sides, to help them see themselves as human persons eager to be heard and understood. To help them listen to their counterparts with respect and empathy, in the hope that this will ease their discomfort and/or foster collaboration.”

The interview was published today—in Italian, English, and Chinese—on the eve of the presentation of the Chinese language volume “The Magisterium of Pope Francis. A guide to reading his Encyclicals and Apostolic Exhortations” by Father Spadaro.

The event, which will take place at the headquarters of La Civiltà Cattolica in Rome, will feature an address by the Pro-Prefect for the Section for First Evangelisation and the New Particular Churches of the Dicastery for Evangelisation, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle.

Cardinal O‘Malley on increased effort towards a culture of abuse prevention
13 May 2023, 15:42

We publish the full speech by the Cardinal President of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors at the opening of the Commission's Plenary Session last 4 May.
By Seán Patrick O'Malley, OFM

Dear Colleagues: We have gathered to continue the work we began in our first meeting last October, shortly after the new membership was announced, building on the work of the Commission since its founding in 2013. Now, as then, we begin by remembering the impact of the evil of sexual abuse---indeed of all kinds of abuse---on so many countless people both inside and outside of our Church. This is our special and irreplaceable focus. This has always been our primary motivation: to accompany those whose lives have been so harmed by abuse and to work diligently to bring about a culture of prevention and care so that such abuse has no place in our Church. We meet in our new offices, assigned to us by the Holy Father, and recently hosted a group of survivors seeking justice for themselves and informed them how the church should protect all those at risk in its care.

Pope at Regina Coeli: Holy Spirit corrects and defends us
14 May 2023, 12:09

At the Regina Coeli prayer on Sunday, Pope Francis reflects on the consoling work of the Holy Spirit, saying that God’s Spirit gently corrects our missteps like a faithful friend while defending us from false accusations.
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis prayed the traditional Eastertide Marian prayer of the Regina Coeli on Sunday with pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square.

In his reflections on the Gospel for the 6th Sunday of Easter, the Pope noted that Jesus calls the Holy Spirit the “Paraclete”, which means both “consoler and advocate at the same time.”

“This means that the Holy Spirit does not leave us alone,” said the Holy Father. “He is near to us, like an advocate who assists the accused person, standing by his or her side.”

Pope at Audience: Love of Christ drove St. Francis Xavier to furthest frontiers
17 May 2023, 09:16

Praising 'the greatest missionary of modern times,' St. Francis Xavier, as embodying apostolic zeal at his Wednesday General Audience, Pope Francis said the love of Christ drove him to the farthest parts of the world to spread the Gospel.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

"The love of Christ was the strength that drove him to the furthest frontiers, with constant toil and danger, overcoming setbacks, disappointments and discouragement, indeed, giving him consolation and joy in following and serving Him to the end."

With these words, Pope Francis described St. Francis Xavier, "rightly considered the greatest missionary of modern times" at his weekly General Audience on Wednesday morning in St. Peter's Square, as he continued reflecting on figures who personified apostolic zeal.

Reflecting on the patron saint of Catholic missions to the faithful in the Square, the Pope praised the saint's prolific care for the sick, poor, and children, wherever he found himself.

“His intense activity was always united with prayer, with union with God.”

The new “National Life Monument,” a larger-than-life bronze sculpture depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary pregnant with the Christ Child, was unveiled and dedicated today on the campus of The Catholic University of America’s Theological College in Washington, D.C.

According to the Canadian artist Timothy Paul Schmalz, the statue, titled “Advent,” is meant to be a symbol of beauty, a celebration of new life, and a bold pro-life statement in the nation’s capital.

Schmalz was present at the dedication ceremony along with the archbishop of Washington, Cardinal Wilton Gregory, and Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet. Gregory prayed over the monument, giving a special blessing to the statue and those present for the dedication.

Gregory praised the monument, saying, “Advent, as a pregnant Madonna, transcends bronze, revealing a deeper significance, deeper truths of God and of us, and his love for each of us, graced as we are in his image and likeness.”

Is tomorrow a holy day of obligation? It depends on where you live
By Tina Dennelly
CNA Newsroom, May 17, 2023 / 16:30 pm

Tomorrow is Ascension Thursday, the day the Church marks 40 days since Jesus’ resurrection and the day he ascended into heaven (see Acts 1:1–11). But depending on where you live, you may or may not be obligated to attend Mass on that day.

If you live in the ecclesiastical provinces of Boston, Hartford, New York, Omaha, and Philadelphia, tomorrow is a holy day of obligation for you. That means if you live in New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Nebraska, or Pennsylvania, you have to go to Mass!

If you live in the rest of the country, the celebration of the solemnity of the Ascension is moved to the Seventh Sunday of Easter — which this year is Sunday, May 21.

Why the different days of celebration?

Vatican stamp inspired by monument celebrating colonial era stirs controversy
By Crux Staff
May 18, 2023

ROME – One of the hard lessons about being pope is that while it can require massive effort to accomplish something positive, it doesn’t take much at all to get you into trouble. As proof of the point, Pope Francis is facing blowback right now over a tiny piece of paper that measures less than two inches by 1.3 inches.

The paper in question is a new Vatican postage stamp promoting the next World Youth Day, to be staged in Lisbon, Portugal, August 1-6.

The stamp depicts Francis leading a small coterie of youth in pointing toward the horizon and, therefore, toward the future. It’s inspired by a famous statue in Lisbon called the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, or the “Monument of the Discoveries,” which was erected in 1960 to mark the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator, and thus to celebrate Portugal’s Age of Discovery.

The choice has generated objections, both in Portugal and elsewhere, among critics who see it as celebrating colonial exploitation and oppression, finding it especially ironic that the Vatican would embrace such imagery just weeks after formally disowning the colonial-era “doctrine of discovery.”

Pope expresses 'heartfelt sympathy' after deadly Italian floods
18 May 2023, 12:10

Pope Francis expresses his heartfelt sympathy for the people killed, and thousands forced to evacuate their homes, as exceptional, torrential rains battered northern Italy, causing massive damage.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Fourteen people are dead and thousands more were evacuated from their homes following exceptional, torrential rains which battered northern Italy's Emilia-Romagna region and eastern provinces, triggering floods and landslides.

According to Civil Protection Minister, Nello Musumeci, some areas had received half their average annual rainfall in just 36 hours. Rivers burst their banks and water washed through towns, and submerged thousands of acres of farmland, according to news agency Reuter.

This catastrophe marks the latest episode of extreme weather and always-more-violent storms to strike the globe as the climate crisis intensifies.

Pope's heartfelt sympathy, prayers

Rome prepares for 35 million pilgrims during 2025 Jubilee Year
By Hannah Brockhaus
Vatican City, May 18, 2023 / 08:00 am

As Rome and the Vatican prepare for an influx of millions of people for a special year focused on hope, one experienced jubilee attendee is offering her advice for a fruitful pilgrimage.

“A pilgrimage as massive as that of a jubilee year should be a wonderful, unique, spiritual experience,” Joan Lewis, author of “A Holy Year in Rome: The Complete Pilgrim’s Guide for the Jubilee of Mercy,” told CNA.

“Watching people from all over the world praying... it’s an experience of the universal Church. For me, it reinforces my faith.”

The Vatican and the city of Rome are expecting an estimated 35 million people to flock to the Eternal City for the 2025 Jubilee Year of Hope — the first ordinary jubilee since the Great Jubilee of 2000.

Guard opens fire as man drives car into Vatican; suspect in custody
By Shannon Mullen, Courtney Mares
CNA Newsroom, May 18, 2023 / 15:13 pm

An unidentified man is in custody after driving a car at high speed through a gate at the Vatican Thursday, the Holy See press office said.

A guard stationed at the Santa Anna entrance fired his weapon in the direction of the vehicle’s front tires, hitting the left front fender, but the vehicle proceeded onto the Vatican grounds until the driver got out at the San Damaso Courtyard, the main courtyard of the Apostolic Palace, the press office said. There the man was blocked and placed under arrest by the Gendarmerie Corps, the press office said.

The incident happened after 8 p.m. at one of the main entrances to Vatican City by car. It is located north of St. Peter’s Square and next to the Swiss Guard barracks. The press office said the man initially approached the entrance in his vehicle and was turned away because he lacked the proper authorization.

Bill Gates’ Four Seasons wins contract for high-end hotel on Vatican doorstep
By Elise Ann Allen
May 18, 2023

ROME – After a lengthy negotiation process, and in spite of public backlash, the Catholic Church’s Order of the Holy Sepulcher has decided to award Bill Gates’s Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts chain a contract for a new luxury hotel a stone’s throw from St. Peter’s Basilica.

In a statement, the order said that on March 10, an agreement was signed with the Fort Partners Group leasing the Palazzo di Domenico della Rovere in Borgo “for hotel use under the management of the Four Seasons group.”

Simply called “Palazzo della Rovere,” the property is located along the Via della Conciliazione, the main street leading up to Bernini’s famed colonnades in St. Peter’s Square.

Previously owned by the Jesuit order, the building now belongs to the Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, made up of roughly 30,000 Knights and Dames throughout the world dedicated to providing financial support to the church in the Holy Land.

The funds are given to the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, which operates pastoral, educational, and social works throughout Jordan, Palestine, Israel, and Cyprus.

Pope Francis invites young people to pray to Blessed Mother
20 May 2023, 10:42

In front of his residence, Casa Santa Marta, Pope Francis receives some 1,000 recently-confirmed, or soon-to-be-confirmed, young people from the Archdiocese of Genoa, Italy, and invites them to pray to the Blessed Mother, while warning them against gossip and fighting.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

On Saturday morning, Pope Francis met with nearly 1,000 recently-confirmed, or soon-to-be-confirmed, young people hailing from the Italian Archdiocese of Genoa.

The young people of the nation's northern port city enthusiastically greeted the Pope with banners and fanfare, in the square in front of his residence, Casa Santa Marta, where he warmly welcomed them.

The Holy Father addressed the young Catholics candidly, and encouraged them to pray to the Blessed Mother.

He also warned them against speaking badly against others, and against gossip.

Be embraced by Mary's tender arms, Pope tells Monfort Missionaries
20 May 2023, 11:20

Pope Francis urges Monfort Missionaries to be embraced by the Blessed Mother's tender arms, and to witness this tenderness to others, as he welcomes them to the Vatican for their 38th General Chapter.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Be embraced by Mary's tender arms, and exemplify her loving witness, Pope Francis told Monfort Missionaries in the Vatican on Saturday on the occasion of their 38th General Chapter.

The Company of Mary, also known as the Montfort Missionaries, is an international Religious Congregation in the Church, dedicated to the establishment of the Kingdom of God under the patronage of Mary, the Mother of Jesus. It was founded at the beginning of the 18th Century by Saint Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort. Today, it numbers just under 1,000 priests and brothers, who carry out their mission in around 30 different countries.
