Pope at Angelus: God is with you in your most difficult times
18 June 2023, 12:20

Pope Francis gives thanks for the closeness of the Lord, who like a father, takes us by the hand when we fall and struggle, and he encourages the faithful to trust in him and perform works of love and hope. He expresses his profound gratitude to all for the prayerful support when he was in hospital.
By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis opened his Sunday Angelus address by expressing his profound gratitude to all for their affection, care, friendship, and prayerful support during his time at Rome's Gemelli Hospital. The Pope returned to the Vatican on Friday after release from the hospital.

“This human closeness and spiritual closeness were of great help and comfort to me. Thank you all! Thank you! Thank you from my heart!”

Last Sunday the weekly rendez-vous with believers and pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square could not go ahead as the Holy Father recovered from abdominal surgery performed in Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on 7 June.

But his speedy recovery led to his dismissal from the hospital on Friday morning, and on Sunday, at noon, he appeared at the window of the Apostolic Palace to pray the Angelus and greet his flock.

Pope looks to Jubilee Year as an occasion for social rebirth
19 June 2023, 11:50

Pope Francis sends a message of greetings to the Rome-based daily newspaper, Il Messaggero, as it marks 145 years since its establishment. In it, he looks ahead to the 2025 Jubilee year, an event that reaches out from Rome to the rest of the world.
By Linda Bordoni

"Once again," Pope Francis writes, during the Jubilee Year the eternal city will become the central point from which the Christian message will be beamed to the world, rekindling hope and new impetus for the building of a more fraternal society.

In a message of good wishes to the Roman daily, Il Messaggero, which is marking 145 years since it was established, the Pope focuses on the importance of the upcoming 2025 Jubilee Year which "will closely concern the city of Rome, but which will affect Europe and the whole world.”

The Jubilee is a special year of grace for believers, and the Pope notes it will offer hope, solace and rebirth to the many pilgrims who are expected to travel to Rome for the occasion.

Pope: Continue to inspire love for the Holy Eucharist
19 June 2023, 12:15

Continue your efforts to contribute to a revival of faith in, and love for, the Holy Eucharist, Pope Francis insists as he thanks American members of the Committee preparing for the forthcoming National Eucharistic Congress in the United States.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

"I encourage you to continue your efforts to contribute to a revival of faith in, and love for, the Holy Eucharist, the “source and summit of the Christian life.”

With these words, Pope Francis expressed his gratitude to the members of the Committee preparing for the forthcoming National Eucharistic Congress in the United States of America, for their efforts to promote love for the Eucharist.

“Indeed, the Eucharist is God’s response to the deepest hunger of the human heart, the hunger for authentic life, for, in the Eucharist, Christ Himself is truly in our midst, to nourish, console and sustain us on our journey.”

"Sadly nowadays, there are those among the Catholic faithful," the Pope lamented, "who believe that the Eucharist is more a symbol than the reality of the Lord’s presence and love."

The Pope also decried that the proper sense of Eucharistic adoration is becoming more and more lost, urging the faithful to combat this trend. Moreover, he urged, we need to value the elderly, often discarded, and who, instead, through their prayer and devotion, set a beautiful and powerful example of faith.

Pope Francis meets with the Canons Regular of the Lateran
19 June 2023, 14:31

Pope Francis meets with the Canons Regular of the Lateran celebrating the bicentenary of their foundation. He recommends they follow "four stars" in their apostolate: prayer, community, sharing everything in common, and service to the Church.
By Salvatore Cernuzio

Pope Francis offered four recommendations to the Canons Regular of the Lateran in his audience with them on Monday 19 June at the Vatican, noting they are also helpful for every religious congregation. First, he underscored the importance of "prayer" as "oxygen" for the soul and a help not to fall into selfishness and self-referentiality. Then he mentioned "community," being "brothers" and avoiding at all times the "scourge" of gossip. Third, he explained how "common use of goods", sharing all in community is a "wise" practice, while watching out against the devil who "always enters one's pockets". Finally, he encouraged the "spirit of service to the Church", rather than just living for oneself.

Prayer, community, the sharing of goods, and service represent four continuing aspects of the history of the Canons Regular as they celebrate 200 years since their foundation, the Pope underscored, "four stars that never wane and ones that make your apostolate luminous and relevant."

John Kerry meets Pope Francis at the Vatican for a fourth time
By Courtney Mares
Rome Newsroom, Jun 19, 2023 / 07:45 am

Pope Francis met with U.S. President Joe Biden’s climate envoy John Kerry on Monday in what was Kerry’s fourth official private meeting with the pope.

The 79-year-old American politician was the first government official to have a private audience at the Vatican with Pope Francis since his release from the hospital.

Kerry is in Europe this week to participate in French President Emmanuel Macron’s Summit for a New Global Financing Pact and the One Planet Sovereign Wealth Funds’ Annual CEO Summit in Paris, according to the U.S. State Department.

At the time of publication, the Vatican had released no information about what the two men discussed, in line with its usual custom for papal meetings with non-heads of state. It noted the audience in its daily bulletin and released photographs of the meeting.

Pope Francis names Cardinal Ghirlanda to succeed Cardinal Burke as Order of Malta patron
By Courtney Mares
Vatican City, Jun 19, 2023 / 10:06 am

Pope Francis on Monday appointed Cardinal Gianfranco Ghirlanda, SJ, to succeed Cardinal Raymond Burke as the patron of the Order of Malta.

The Vatican announced June 19 that the 80-year-old Jesuit cardinal will take on the role as the “Cardinalis Patronus,” the papal representative to the sovereign order responsible for promoting the spiritual interests of the order and its 13,500 members.

Ghirlanda has already played an active role in the Order of Malta’s reform. He was part of the team that drafted the order’s new constitution and spoke with the pope at length about the process, along with Cardinal Silvano Maria Tomasi, the most recent special delegate to the order.

The Sovereign Military Order of Malta is both a lay religious order of the Catholic Church and a sovereign state subject to international law.

Pope Francis receives President Díaz-Canel Bermúdez of Cuba and his entourage in private audience in the Vatican.
By Vatican news

A statement released by the Holy See Press Office on Tuesday, 20 June, said Pope Francis received the President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez in the Vatican’s Paul VI Hall during the morning.

The President then went on to meet Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State, accompanied by Mgr. Daniel Pacho, Undersecretary for the Multilateral Sector of the Section for Relations with States and International Organisations.

According to the statement, amongst the topics discussed were the importance of diplomatic relations between the Holy See and Cuba, and the historic visit of Pope St. John Paul II in 1998 was evoked on its 25th anniversary year.

They then dwelt on the situation in the country and the contribution that the Church offers, especially in the areas of charity.

The statement concluded noting that during the conversation some international topics of mutual interest were touched upon, as well as the importance of continuing to promote the common good.

On World Refugee Day, Pope Francis urges action; companies pledge to hire refugees
By Peter Pinedo
Washington, D.C. Newsroom, Jun 20, 2023 / 11:30 am

June 20 is World Refugee Day, a day established by the United Nations to promote awareness of the estimated 27.1 million refugees displaced by violence and conflict across the globe.

To mark the day, Pope Francis urged continued prayer and action, and multinational companies, including Amazon and Microsoft, pledged to collectively hire more than 250,000 refugees in Europe.

In a tweet Tuesday, Francis said he was “thinking of Christ present in so many desperate people fleeing conflicts and climate change.”

“The problem of hospitality needs to be confronted together,” the pope added. “Without excuses and without delay, because the effects will be felt, sooner or later, by all of us.”

Pope tells young astronomers to never lose ‘sense of wonder’
20 June 2023, 11:37

In a message addressed to participants in the Vatican Observatory’s Summer School of Astrophysics, the Pope reflects on new scientific tools that reveal new astronomical discoveries and invites them to always be inspired by the love for truth.
By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis has sent a message of greetings to this year’s participants in the Vatican Observatory Summer School inviting them to never lose the sense of wonder, in their research and in their lives, as they continue to observe the universe with increasingly sophisticated tools.

The Pope, who penned his message during his convalescence last week in the Gemelli Hospital where he underwent abdominal surgery, took the occasion to thank “Specola Vaticana” faculty members who are guiding the participants in this experience.

The summer school in Castel Gandolfo, which is back after a five-year hiatus due in part to the Covid-19 pandemic, was established in 1986 for young astronomers and has always enjoyed the support of the Popes.

Synod update: General Secretariat of the Synod publishes the “Instrumentum laboris”

20 June 2023, 14:31

The General Secretariat of the Synod publishes the “Instrumentum laboris”, the document that will guide the work of the two-part General Assembly that will meet in Rome in October 2023 and October 2024.
By Salvatore Cernuzio

A document of some sixty pages that incorporates the experiences of local Churches in every region of the world – Churches that are experiencing wars, climate change, economic systems that produce “exploitation, inequality, and ‘waste’.” Churches whose faithful suffer martyrdom, in countries where they are minorities or where they are coming to terms “with an increasingly driven, and sometimes aggressive, secularisation.” Churches wounded by sexual abuse, or abuses of power and conscience,” whether economic and institutional – wounds that demand answers and “conversion.” Churches that are fearlessly confronting the challenges by engaging in the synodal discernment, without trying to “resolve them at all costs”: “Only in this way can these tensions become sources of energy and not lapse into destructive polarisations.”

Released on Tuesday morning, the document – known as the Instrumentum laboris – will be the basis for the work of the participants in the General Assembly of the Synod on Synodality, which begins in the Vatican in October 2023 and concludes with a second Assembly one year later.

Synod on Synodality leaders: Full list of delegates for October assembly still under review
By Hannah Brockhaus
Vatican City, Jun 20, 2023 / 14:00 pm

Organizers of the Synod on Synodality on Tuesday announced a change of venue for the upcoming synodal assembly of bishops and other delegates being held in October but said that the full list of those participating in the monthlong event is still being prepared.

The June 20 media briefing was held at the Holy See Press Office to present the synod’s Instrumentum Laboris, a document released earlier in the day that outlines key questions for the upcoming synod discussions.

Both this year’s assembly and a final one set for October 2024 will be held in a Vatican auditorium and not in the synod hall as customary.

The location was chosen to provide more space. To better facilitate discussion, participants will sit at round tables in the Paul VI Hall, where Pope Francis sometimes holds large audiences, explained Father Giacomo Costa, SJ, a consultor to the Secretariat General of the Synod.

CNA Newsroom, Jun 20, 2023 / 07:00 am

Four German bishops voted Tuesday against providing funding for the synod committee that is preparing to introduce a permanent German synodal council to oversee the Church in Germany.

The four bishops are Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki of Cologne and three bishops from Bavaria: Gregor Maria Hanke, OSB, of Eichstätt; Stefan Oster of Passau; and Rudolf Voderholzer of Regensburg.

The German Bishops’ Conference issued a statement June 20 saying: “For a large majority of the diocesan bishops, it is important that the 15 decisions of the synodal assembly be implemented as soon as possible.”

However, the statement continued, since a unanimous decision of the bishops is needed to provide financial and human resources, “and four bishops have declared that they will not agree to further financing of the Synodal Way,” it is now necessary to find other ways of financing, according to a report by CNA Deutsch, CNA’s German-language partner news agency.

Warning of a threat of a new schism from Germany, the Vatican already intervened in July 2022 against a German synodal council.

In January, the Vatican asserted “that neither the Synodal Way, nor any body established by it, nor any bishops’ conference has the competence to establish the ‘synodal council’ at the national, diocesan, or parish level.”

Pope: The war endangers the civil and religious balance in Europe
22 June 2023, 10:14

Pope Francis meets with Assumptionists in the Vatican and highlights key aspects of their apostolate, from pilgrimages to their commitment to the media and their work in the Middle East.
By Francesca Merlo

Addressing Assumptionists, in Rome for their 34th General Chapter, Pope Francis chose to share some reflections on the theme that guides the work of their Chapter: "This Kingdom of God is at hand". He noted that one of the principal missions of apostolic religious life is to manifest, "very concretely", closeness to the Kingdom "and therefore, this hope for every person and for the whole world".

The Pope stressed to the Assumptionists that "wherever you are, you are signs of the Kingdom by your closeness to the people to whom you are sent".

Pope thanks humanitarian arm of eastern Churches for aid to Ukraine, Turkey, Eritrea, Iran
22 June 2023, 12:01

Pope Francis expresses gratitude for the proactive solidarity and generosity of the Reunion of Aid Agencies for the Oriental Churches, the Holy See's humanitarian arm for Eastern Churches, for its work to alleviate the suffering in war-torn Ukraine, Turkey and Syria, Holy Land, and across the world.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Receiving ROACO members in the Vatican on the morning of Thursday, 22 June, Pope Francis handed them his prepared remarks and explained he would not be reading his discourse because he is still having difficulty breathing after the general anaesthesia he underwent during surgery on 7 June.

However, he expressed joy for the visit of representatives of the "Reunion of Aid Agencies for the Oriental Churches" and its Youth Conference that are holding their Plenary Assembly in Rome and thanked them for their proactive solidarity "that helps heal wounds like a caress on the face of someone who is suffering."

“A caress that restores hope amidst the turmoil of conflict.”

Fatima visionary Sr Lucia declared Venerable
22 June 2023, 12:44

Pope Francis approves decrees recognizing the heroic virtues of five Servants of God, including Sr Lucia de Juesus Rosa dos Santos, one of the visionaries of Fatima; along with the martyrdom of twenty martyrs of the Spanish Civil War.
By Christopher Wells

Carmelite Sister Lucia de Jesus Rosa dos Santos, who, along with her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto witnessed a series of apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Fatima, has been declared Venerable by the Church.

The decree recognizing Sr Lucia’s heroic virtues was promulgated on Thursday with the approval of Pope Francis.

In 1916, Lucia and her two cousins reported being visited by an Angel in the area of Fatima, Portugal. The following year, beginning on 13 May, the children claimed to receive a series of apparitions from the Blessed Virgin Mary, which culminated six months later with the famous “Miracle of the Sun” that was witnessed by tens of thousands of people.

After the untimely death of her cousins, who died a few years later due to Spanish flu, Sister Lucia remained the sole custodian of the message entrusted to her by Our Lady, which she transcribed, at the instigation of the Bishop of Leiria, José Alves Correia da Silvia, into four documents between 1935 and 1941.

A later document, dated 1944, contained the so-called “third secret,” was sent to Rome and opened for the first time in 1960. St John Paul II, who had a special devotion to Our Lady of Fatima, allowed the secret to be published in 2000.

Pope: 40 Days to WYD, 'My doctor says I can go, I cannot wait!'
22 June 2023, 16:15

Fourty days before the upcoming World Youth Day in Portugal, Pope Francis sends video message to young people who will participate or follow the WYD in Lisbon, saying: "The doctor told me I can go, I can't wait."
By Salvatore Cernuzio

"Some think that because of illness, I cannot go, but the doctor told me I can, so I will be with you. Come on, young people!" On the same morning in which during the audience at ROACO, he spoke of some discomfort from the recent laparotomy operation, the Pope sent a message to the young people from every continent who will all gather in Lisbon from 1 to 6 August for World Youth Day and reassured them of his presence at the great event.

Showing the grey backpack with the kit that will be distributed to the pilgrims, he says: "There are 40 days left, like Lent, to the meeting in Lisbon. I am ready! I already have everything. I can't wait to go!"
