Pope at Angelus: We are called to show compassion and mercy
26 November 2023, 12:16

https://www.vaticannews.va/en/pope.html
In his Angelus reflections on this Solemnity of Christ the King, Pope Francis reminds us that we are called to show compassion, mercy, and tenderness, which are the criteria by which we will be judged by the Lord. Recovering from flu-like symptoms, the Pope led the Angelus from his residence of the Casa Santa Marta.
By Vatican News

Recovering from flu-like symptoms, Pope Francis led the recitation of the midday Angelus prayer from his residence at the Casa Santa Marta instead of the usual window of the Apostolic Palace overlooking Saint Peter's Square on this cool autumn day. Msgr. Paolo Braida, Head of Office at the Secretariat of State, read the Pope's reflections before the Angelus and his additional message following the prayer.

Pilgrims and visitors who had gathered in the square participated in the Angelus via the large video screens broadcasting the event. Yesterday the Pope cancelled his scheduled events due to "flu-like" symptoms. In the afternoon he visited a nearby hospital for a scan of his lungs that yielded negative results for any risk of pulmonary complications.

Pope appears with IV, says he has ‘inflammation of the lungs’

ROME – After receiving a CAT-scan on his lungs yesterday, Pope Francis Sunday did not deliver his weekly Angelus address from the window of the papal apartment overlooking St. Peter’s Square but from a chapel inside his residence, citing ‘pulmonary inflammation’ and appearing with what seemed to be an IV in his hand.

Speaking to faithful gathered in the square on an unusually cold Roman day, and also those tuning in online, the pope said that “today I cannot come to the window because I have this problem of inflammation of the lungs.”

A Vatican official identified as Monsignor Paolo Luca Braida, head of office at the Secretariat of State, read the pontiff’s reflection on the day’s Gospel passage. He was seated next to the pontiff, who appeared to be short of breath.

Pope Francis at one point coughed, revealing what appeared to be an IV in the hand he lifted to cover his mouth, presumably for antibiotics.

The pope’s decision to recite his Angelus address from the chapel of the Vatican’s Saint Martha guesthouse where he lives, which marks the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic that he has livestreamed the event rather than delivering it in person, came the day after he underwent a CAT-scan on his lungs.

Pope Francis has no fever, ‘clearly improving’ from flu
27 November 2023, 10:34

The Director of the Holy See Press Office says a CT scan the Pope underwent over the weekend “ruled out pneumonia” and that he is in a “good” condition and improving.
By Joseph Tulloch

“The Pope is in a good and stable condition; he has no fever, and his respiratory situation is clearly improving."

That’s the latest update on the Pope’s health given on Monday morning by Matteo Bruni, the Director of the Holy See Press Office.

The Pope has been suffering from a “pulmonary inflammation," as he himself said on Sunday, appearing via videolink for his Sunday Angelus address.

Mr. Bruni confirmed that the CT scan which Pope Francis underwent early Saturday afternoon at the Gemelli Hospital on Rome's Tiberian Island "ruled out pneumonia but showed pulmonary inflammation that has caused some breathing difficulties."

“To increase the efficacy of the treatment, a cannula needle was inserted for the infusion of intravenous antibiotic therapy,” said Mr. Bruni.

Pope Francis met on Monday morning with the President of Paraguay, Santiago Peña Palacios.

The encounter lasted about 25 minutes, from 8:55 to 9:20 in the morning. It was held at the Pope’s residence in the Casa Santa Marta and not, as usual, in the Apostolic Palace, since the Pope is suffering from a mild pulmonary inflammation.

President Peña Palacios was accompanied by his wife and a delegation of thirteen others.

UPDATE: Pope Francis’ health: Here’s a timeline of his medical issues in recent years
By CNA Staff
Vatican City, Nov 27, 2023 / 15:45 pm

Pope Francis is being treated with antibiotics intravenously and has postponed some of his meetings this week as he recovers from a “mild flu,” according to the Vatican.

A CT scan at a Rome hospital over the weekend “ruled out pneumonia, but it showed lung inflammation causing some breathing difficulties,” Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said Nov. 27.

Francis, who turns 87 next month, spent much of the past decade as pope in relatively good health but has dealt with several painful medical conditions over the last few years.

Here is a timeline charting Pope Francis’ recent health concerns:

December 2020

A bout of sciatic pain in the final days of 2020 keeps Pope Francis from presiding at the Vatican’s liturgies on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Francis has suffered from sciatica for a number of years; he spoke about it during an in-flight press conference returning from a trip to Brazil in July 2013.

“Sciatica is very painful, very painful! I don’t wish it on anyone,” he said about the condition, which starts in the lower back and can cause pain running down the back of the thigh and leg to the foot.

The Office of the President-Elect of Argentina confirmed on X that the country’s new president, Javier Milei, received a rosary from Pope Francis on Nov. 24.

The sacramental, blessed by the Holy Father, was sent to Milei and vice president-elect Victoria Villarruel.

Pope Francis' gift follows a phone call he had last week with the president-elect of Argentina in which the pontiff congratulated Milei and advised him to have “courage and wisdom” in governing the nation.

Milei took advantage of the occasion to invite the pope to visit his homeland in 2024.

Both gestures mark the beginning of a new relationship between the two as Milei has apologized for the insults and criticism that he had previously publicly leveled against the Holy Father.

Catholics can receive a plenary indulgence by praying before a Nativity scene
By Francesca Pollio Fenton
CNA Staff, Nov 25, 2023 / 08:00 am

This year, Catholics will be able to receive a plenary indulgence from Dec. 8, the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, to Feb. 2, 2024, the feast of the Presentation in the Temple of Our Lord Jesus Christ, by praying before a Nativity scene in a Franciscan church.

Earlier this year, on the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the faithful gathered at the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi, Italy, to honor the beloved Italian saint and celebrate the 800th anniversary of the approval of the Rule of St. Francis (1223) and the creation of the Nativity scene in Greccio.

As part of the celebration of this Franciscan Centenary, the Conference of the Franciscan Family asked Pope Francis for the approval of this plenary indulgence.

The conference wrote: “In order to promote the spiritual renewal of the faithful and increase the life of grace, we ask that the faithful receive a plenary indulgence under the usual conditions from 8 December 2023, the solemnity of Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, to 2 February 2024, feast of the Presentation in the Temple of Our Lord Jesus Christ, by visiting the churches run by Franciscan families throughout the world and stopping in prayer in front of the Nativity scenes set up there.”

The Apostolic Penitentiary welcomed the request, allowing the faithful to receive this indulgence under the usual conditions.

Those who are sick or unable to participate physically can obtain the indulgence by offering their sufferings up to the Lord or by “carrying out practices of piety.”

Pope's participation in COP28 Summit cancelled at doctors' request
28 November 2023, 20:31

The Director of the Holy See Press Office says Pope Francis’ physicians have asked him not to undertake his scheduled journey to Dubai to participate in the COP28 Summit, and he has accepted their advice “with great regret.”
By Vatican News

A statement released on Tuesday evening by the Director of the Holy See Press Office said, “Even though the Holy Father’s general health situation has improved in relation to the flu and respiratory tract inflammation he has been suffering from, his doctors have asked the Pope not to undertake his scheduled visit to Dubai in the coming days, on the occasion of the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.”

Matteo Bruni said that upon the advice of the doctors, Pope Francis "with great regret" has cancelled his visit to Dubai.

The visit was scheduled from 1 to 3 December, and on Saturday he was to address the COP28 Assembly, and on Sunday participate in the inauguration of the COP's Faith Pavilion.

Bruni added that "following through with the Pope’s and the Holy See’s wish to be part of the discussions taking place in the coming days, the modalities by which this can happen will be defined as soon as possible."

Pope Francis reportedly takes Vatican apartment, salary from Cardinal Burke
By Jonathan Liedl
Vatican City, Nov 28, 2023 / 13:34 pm

Pope Francis has stripped one of his top American critics, Cardinal Raymond Burke, of his Vatican housing and salary privileges, the Associated Press is reporting.

According to the AP report, which is based on conversations with two anonymous sources briefed on the measures, the pope discussed his planned actions against the American prelate at a Nov. 20 meeting of Vatican office heads.

The pope reportedly said that Burke was a source of “disunity” in the Church and that he was using the privileges afforded to retired cardinals against the Church.

The Italian Catholic news blog La Nuova Bussola Quotidiana first reported pending actions against Burke on Nov. 27.

“Cardinal Burke is my enemy, so I take away his apartment and his salary,” the pope had said at the Nov. 20 meeting, according to Bussola’s undisclosed Vatican source.

CNA was unable to immediately reach Burke to confirm the measures against him. The Vatican’s communications office did not respond to EWTN’s request for comment by time of publication.

The AP reported that the Vatican spokesman, Matteo Bruni, “referred questions to Burke.”

“I don’t have anything particular to say about that,” Bruni told reporters.

Pope’s December prayer intention: ‘For people with disabilities’
28 November 2023, 16:00

Pope Francis releases his prayer intention for the month of December 2023, and invites everyone to pray that people with disabilities may be at the center of attention in our societies.
By Devin Watkins

“Let us pray that people with disabilities may be at the center of attention in society, and that institutions offer inclusion programs that enhance their active participation.”

Pope Francis offered that invitation to Christians in The Pope Video released on Tuesday to accompany his monthly prayer intention for the universal Church.

In the video, the Pope acknowledged that people with disabilities “are among the most fragile among us.”

“Some of them suffer rejection, rooted in either ignorance or prejudice, which then marginalizes them,” he added.

Pope at Audience: Christians must fill pessimistic societies with Gospel joy
29 November 2023, 09:22

At the weekly General Audience, Pope Francis continues his catechesis series on apostolic zeal, reflecting on the Christian mission to share the joy of the Gospel.
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis reflected on his Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, in his catechesis on apostolic zeal at the Wednesday General Audience.

Msgr. Filippo Ciampanelli, an official of the Secretariat of State, read the Pope’s prepared catechesis, since he is still recovering from pulmonary inflammation.

He focused on the actuality of the Christian proclamation of the joy inherent in the message of Christ.

Pope encourages Franciscans to live out their charism in the world
29 November 2023, 16:45

As the Franciscan Family marks the 8th Centenary of the confirmation of the Rule of St. Francis, on 29 November 1223, Pope Francis invites Franciscan friars and sisters to renew their vocation of bringing the Gospel of poverty and fraternity to today’s world.
By Lisa Zengarini

Pope Francis has urged members of the Franciscan Family to hold true to the charism of fraternity, humility and poverty of their Founder by going out to the world to share the Gospel.

The Regola Bullata of 1223

For Franciscan friars and sisters going around the world means realizing their “itinerant vocation in a style of fraternity and peaceful life” and is in line with the call on all Christians “to be an ‘outgoing Church’", the Pope said in a letter he addressed to the Ministers General of the Order on the occasion of the 8th Centenary of the formal confirmation of the Rule of St. Francis of Assisi by Pope Honorius III.

The Rule (Regola Bullata) was formally recognized in the Bull “Solere Annuere” issued on November 29 1223, 800 years ago today.

Pope Francis’ letter was read out during a solemn liturgy presided over on Wednesday afternoon at the Papal Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran in Rome by Cardinal Angelo De Donatis, the Pope's Vicar for the Diocese.

The celebration was attended by friars, nuns, and lay people belonging to the three Orders founded by St. Francis.

Cardinal Parolin: Pope's Dubai visit cancelled to ensure full recovery
29 November 2023, 18:50

Speaking on the sidelines of an event at the Italian Chamber of Deputies, Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin confirms that Pope Francis is getting better and that his scheduled journey to Dubai for COP28 was cancelled to ensure his full recovery.
By Salvatore Cernuzio

"The condition of the Holy Father is stable; he does not have a fever, but the lung inflammation associated with respiratory difficulties persists. Antibiotic therapy continues."

The Holy See Press Office released that brief update on Pope Francis' health on Wednesday evening.

Earlier in the day, Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin confirmed that the Pope is recovering well from the flu and lung inflammation, which made him decide on Tuesday to cancel his journey to Dubai.

“The Pope is on the mend; he just didn't want to expose himself to risks, following the advice of his doctors," said the Cardinal. The Pope was scheduled to leave for Dubai on Friday, 1 December,  to take part in the COP28 on climate change.

“I believe he made this choice to avoid a relapse so he can recover as soon as possible," Cardinal Parolin told journalists on the sidelines of an event at the Italian Chamber of Deputies where he held a lecture on the legacy of the late Italian Bishop and missionary Luigi Secco.

Cardinal Parolin confirmed that the Holy See is studying the “modalities” by which the Pope will take part in the discussions in Dubai, as announced on Tuesday evening by the Director of the Holy See Press Office.

“We are working on them. I have participated in all the COPs, starting in Paris and the following ones, so I think I will go this time too, but obviously I will shorten my  visit, he said.

The Secretary of State explained that the Vatican delegation will stay in Dubai through the two weeks of discussions. “I would only participate in the first part," he said.

BREAKING: Papal biographer confirms Pope Francis will remove Cardinal Burke’s flat, salary
Michael Haynes
Wed Nov 29, 2023 - 12:02 pm EST

VATICAN CITY (LifeSiteNews) – Pope Francis’ favored biographer, Austen Ivereigh, has stated the Pope personally confirmed the reports that he intends to strip Raymond Cardinal Burke of his flat and salary, though denied calling the cardinal his “enemy.”

In a report published November 29 on the heterodox site Where Peter Is, Ivereigh wrote that he had met with the Argentine pontiff on Monday, who confirmed the veracity of reports stating that Francis intended to strip Cardinal Burke of his Rome apartment and his salary.

READ: Pope Francis set to remove his ‘enemy’ Cardinal Burke’s ‘flat and salary’: report

Ivereigh wrote:

In the course of our conversation, Francis told me he had decided to remove Cardinal Burke’s cardinal privileges — his apartment and salary — because he had been using those privileges against the Church. He told me that while the decision wasn’t a secret, he didn’t intend a public announcement but earlier that day (Monday) it had been leaked.

Ivereigh stated that this meeting took place on Monday afternoon. It was on Monday morning that the New Daily Compass (La Nuova Bussola Quotidiana) published their report, stating that Pope Francis had, during a November 20 meeting with heads of the Roman Curia, revealed his intention to evict the prominent American cardinal from his lodgings in Rome.

Pope calls for reflection on feminine dimension of Church
30 November 2023, 11:09

Pope Francis highlights the need for more women theologians in remarks to members of the International Theological Commission on Thursday, and calls on the Commission to propose “an evangelizing theology, which promotes dialogue with the world of culture.”
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis highlighted the feminine dimension of the Church on Thursday, emphasizing the need for women’s perspective in theology. “Women have a different capacity for theological reflection than we men do,” the Pope said.

His extemporaneous remarks came during an audience with members of the International Theological Commission (ITC), which, as the Pope noted, is composed primarily of men.

The Church is woman

“The Church is woman,” he said, continuing his reflection. “And if we do not understand what woman is or what the theology of womanhood is, we will never understand what the Church is.” He described the "masculinizing" of the Church as a “great sin,” which has yet to be resolved.

The Pope appealed to a distinction proposed by Jesuit theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar, who described a “Petrine” or ministerial principle, and a “Marian” or mystical principle. “The Marian is more important than the Petrine,” Pope Francis said, “because there is the bride Church, the woman Church, without being masculine.”

This should lead not only to more women represented in the ITC, but also to greater reflection on the Church as woman and as bride. “This is a task I ask of you, please. 'Demasculinize' the Church.”

Pope: ‘Poorly cared-for health succumbs to fragility’
30 November 2023, 12:27

Meeting with participants in a seminar on “Ethics in Health Management’, Pope Francis says he is recovering from infectious bronchitis, and reflects on the importance of caring for one’s health.
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis held an audience on Thursday with participants in a seminar on “Ethics in Health Management”.

In off-the-cuff remarks, he took the opportunity to reflect on his own health.

“As you can see, I am alive,” he joked. “The doctor didn't let me go to Dubai. The reason is that it's very hot there, and going from the heat to air conditioning is not convenient in this bronchial situation.”

The Pope also thanked God that his illness was not pneumonia, calling it “a very acute, infectious bronchitis.”

“I no longer have a fever, but antibiotics and such things are still ongoing,” he said.

Pope sends greetings to Ecumenical Patriarch on feast of St. Andrew
30 November 2023, 12:48

In his traditional greetings to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew on the occasion of the feast of Saint Andrew, the patron of Constantinople, Pope Francis highlights the historic meeting of Pope Paul VI and Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras in 1964, and prays that Sts Peter and Andrew might obtain for us the gifts of fraternal communion and peace.
By Christopher Wells

Sixty years ago, Paul VI and Athenagoras met together in Jerusalem, the first such meeting between a Pope and an Ecumenical Patriarch in more than a thousand years.

“That encounter was a vital step forward in breaking down the barrier of misunderstanding, distrust and even hostility that had existed for almost a millennium,” writes Pope Francis, in his annual greetings to the current Ecumenical Patriarch, Bartholomew I.
