Pope at Epiphany Mass: Imitate the Magi to approach the Christ Child
06 January 2024, 10:41

Pope Francis with the Christ Child

Pope Francis presides over Mass on the Solemnity of the Epiphany, and recalls three ways that imitating the Three Kings may lead us closer to God.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Like the Magi, let us seek out the Lord with our eyes to the Heavens...

Pope Francis gave this encouragement during Holy Mass on Saturday morning, on the Solemnity of the Epiphany.

Addressing the faithful gathered in St Peter's Basilica, the Holy Father began by recalling that the Magi set out to seek the newborn King.

"They are an image of the world’s peoples journeying in search of God, of the foreigners who now are led to the mountain of the Lord, of those who now, from afar, can hear the message of salvation, of all those who were lost and now hear the beckoning of a friendly voice.

"For now, in the flesh of the Babe of Bethlehem," the Holy Father rejoiced, "the glory of the Lord has been revealed to all the nations" and “all shall see the salvation of God.”

Pope at Angelus: Magi teach us to wonder at the humble Child Jesus

Pope Francis during the Angelus on the Solemnity of the Epiphany  (Vatican Media)

At the Angelus prayer on the Feast of the Epiphany, Pope Francis invites Christians to look to the Child Jesus and wonder at His humility, as the Magi did when they arrived at the manger in Bethlehem bearing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, and to see the problems of the world through the eyes of children.
By Lisa Zengarini

Pope Francis prayed the Angelus on Saturday, the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord, with pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square.

In his remarks ahead of the traditional Marian prayer, the Pope invited the faithful to reflect on the scene of the Magi, who, after wondering about the apparition of a star, set out for Bethlehem to find Jesus and offer Him their gifts.

Feast of Epiphany 2024...

7 facts about the Wise Men you might not know

On Jan. 6, the Catholic Church celebrates the solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord. On that day we commemorate the “manifestation” of the expected Messiah, who reveals himself to all the peoples of humanity, represented by the Three Wise Men who arrived in Bethlehem from the East.

The Gospel according to St. Matthew tells us that “on entering the house they saw the child with Mary, his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh” (Mt 2:11).

Here are seven facts that perhaps you didn’t know about the Three Wise Men and the Epiphany.

1. The Church celebrates three epiphanies.

The feast of the Three Kings is commonly called Epiphany, a word that in Greek means “manifestation” in the sense that God reveals himself and makes himself known.

However, the Church celebrates three manifestations of the life of Jesus as epiphanies: the Epiphany of the Magi from the East (manifestation to the pagans), the Epiphany of the Baptism of the Lord (manifestation to the Jews), and the Epiphany of the wedding at Cana (manifestation to his disciples).

Rome mayor promises Pope a more ‘presentable, inclusive’ city for Jubilee 2025
By Crux Staff
Jan 6, 2024

ROME – In a half-hour audience with Pope Francis on Friday, Rome’s Mayor Roberto Gualtieri reported that more than 1,400 public work sites are open across the city, the lion’s share in preparation for the Jubilee Year of 2025, and vowed that the city will be “not only cleaner and more presentable, but also more supportive and inclusive” during the year-long Catholic festival.

Gualtieri presented Pope Francis with a book illustrating 184 principal projects for the Holy Year which, he said, collectively will “change the face” of the city.

“We’re working without pause,” Gaultieri said, acknowledging that preparations for the Jubilee Year got off to a slow start because of the collapse of the former government of Prime Minister Mario Draghi in late 2022, which, he said, caused a 7-8 month delay in approving the necessary legislation.

Nevertheless, Gualtieri said, the city is scrambling to catch up, including authorizing overtime for crews to work on some projects overnight, from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., in part to speed up completion and in part to ease traffic burdens created by the work sites.

Gualtieri acknowledged that the various constructions projects across town are creating no shortage of disruptions, adding to the city’s already notoriously congested traffic situation, but said that “without work sites, there’s no future for the city.”

In terms of specific improvements anticipated for the Jubilee Year, Gualtieri cited five projects in particular in the vicinity of the Vatican.

Pope Francis baptises 16 infants in the Sistine Chapel

As is customary on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, Pope Francis baptises 16 infants in the Sistine Chapel, welcoming them into their new life of faith.
By Francesca Merlo

Pope Francis on Sunday baptised 16 infants on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord.

Under the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel, Pope Francis celebrated the Lord's gift of faith to these children, saying they are also protagonists of the ceremony, since they give witness of how to receive faith.

Although the children were all silent as the Pope spoke, “it only takes one to give the first note and the concert starts,” he said. Should they in fact cry, he continued “let them cry!”. Likewise, “if they are hungry, feed them”. They decide on this feast day, as they prepare to receive the gift of faith.
In fact, the Pope continued, let them be an example of faith to us, too. “May they show us how to receive our faith: with innocence and with open hearts”.

He then went on to baptise each child one by one, welcoming each one into its faith.

Pope at Angelus: Our Baptism made us children of God
07 January 2024, 12:11

During his Sunday Angelus on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, Pope Francis reminds faithful that the day they were baptized, we became children of God forever, and this date of great grace must be remembered and celebrated.
 By Deborah Castellano Lubov

At our Baptism, we became God's beloved children forever, and this is an occasion to remember and celebrate.

This was the powerful reminder Pope Francis offered to the faithful during his Angelus address in St. Peter's Square on Sunday, the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord.
As he reflected on the day's Gospel passage, which recalls Jesus' Baptism by St. John the Baptist, the Holy Father reminded the faithful how our Baptism extraordinarily changes our lives and immerses us in His infinite embrace.

Pope Francis: 'Peace is a responsibility incumbent on all of us'
08 January 2024, 10:38

In his annual “State of the World” address to members of the Diplomatic Corps accredited to the Holy See, Pope Francis reflects on the conflicts and divisions ravaging the world and highlights the responsibility of individuals and nations to foster peace.
By Linda Bordoni

“Blessed are the peacemakers,” Pope Francis recalled as he welcomed the expanded “diplomatic family” in the Vatican, thanking the ambassadors for their efforts to nurture good relations between the Holy See and their respective countries.

And immediately he shone the light on the central theme of his discourse – Peace - which he said, is primarily a gift of God, for it is He who left us His peace. “Yet it is also a responsibility incumbent upon all of us,” he added.

Rediscovered book by Cardinal Fernández features graphic erotic passages on ‘spirituality and sensuality’
By Jonathan Liedl

A 1998 book by Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernández featuring provocative, sexually-charged themes has resurfaced, likely adding further scrutiny to the already embattled prefect of the Vatican’s doctrine office.

Titled “Mystical Passion: Spirituality and Sensuality,” the 26-year-old work includes graphic descriptions of human sexual relations and discussion of what the Argentinian theologian describes as “mystical orgasm.”

The nearly 100-page-long book also depicts in detail an imaginary erotic encounter with Jesus Christ on the shores of Galilee, which Fernández said was based on a spiritual experience disclosed to him by a 16-year-old girl.

The book, originally published in Mexico, was brought to renewed attention on Jan. 8 by Caminante Wanderer, a traditionalist Catholic blog based in Argentina, which described “Mystical Passion” as “imprudent” and “an occasion of sin” for potential readers.

Similarly, the Italian traditionalist website Messa in Latino said the book was “truly scandalous and apparently blasphemous.”

Fernández did not respond to a request for comment by EWTN News before publication.

Pope to Vatican-accredited journalists: ‘Love humanity, learn humility’
22 January 2024, 09:53

Pope Francis meets with reporters accredited to the Vatican, and urges them to combine “subtlety of spirit” with journalistic skill in order to effectively broadcast news pertaining to the Pope and the Holy See.
By Devin Watkins

“The beauty of your work around Peter is that it is founded on the solid rock of responsibility in truth, not on the fragile sands of gossip and ideological interpretations.”

Pope Francis offered that reminder to 150-odd journalists accredited to the Vatican, frequently known by the insider term “Vaticanisti”.

He met early Monday with members of the International Association of Journalists Accredited to the Vatican.

Pope upholds legacy of Don Milani, a “restless and disturbing” priest
22 January 2024, 12:15

Pope Francis meets members of the Committee for the Centenary of the birth of Italian pioneer priest and educator, Don Lorenzo Milani, and recalls his dedication to the education of the poor and excluded in society.
By Lisa Zengarini

Fr. Milani’s testimony and message invites us “not to remain indifferent, to identify the new poor,” and to reach out “to all the excluded," Pope Francis said on Monday, as he addressed members of the Committee for the Centenary of the Birth of this pioneering Italian priest.

Born in Florence in 1923 to a well-off, non-believing middle-class family, Don Lorenzo Milani was an educator of the poor who, in the Fifties and Sixties,  developed innovative methods of critical pedagogy, centred around social justice, in the school he founded in the rural hamlet of Barbiana, in Tuscany.

Though less known internationally, he holds an important position in the history of open education.

In his address, Pope Francis thanked the Committee for its commitment to keeping Don Milani’s testimony and message alive, and to making it known to all, "especially to younger generations."

Pope Francis: God’s gifts are entrusted to our care
22 January 2024, 10:27

Pope Francis highlights the need for respect and steadfastness in caring for the earth and for one another, as he welcomes participants in the Vinitaly wine and spirits trade fair to the Vatican.
By Christopher Wells

Welcoming participants in the Vinitaly fair to the Vatican, Pope Francis paid tribute to their decision to reflect on the ethical aspects and moral responsibilities of their work, while noting that they have drawn their inspiration from St. Francis of Assisi.

The wine and spirits trade fair is focused on promoting relationships between producers, buyers, and stakeholders in the wine industry, as well as sharing experiences and skills.

In his address to the group, Pope Francis highlighted the fundamental lines of their reflection, including concern for the environment, labour, and healthy consumer habits, saying these “point to an attitude focused on respect at various levels.”

Pope launches new YOUCAT: ‘Christ is password for a joyful life’
22 January 2024, 13:08

Pope Francis writes a letter to young people to accompany a new edition of the YOUCAT, or ‘Youth Catechism of the Catholic Church’, and invites them to find the secret to a joyful life in living with and for Christ.
By Devin Watkins

“Reading the Gospel, praying assiduously, and studying the catechism with enthusiasm help us to ‘transfer’ to our heart and our mind the eyes, feelings, and attitudes of Jesus.”

Pope Francis offered that positive review of a new edition of YOUCAT, in a letter to young people published in the Italian newspaper La Stampa, on Monday.

He encouraged young people to study the Youth Catechism of the Catholic Church, recalling that love is the real reason we are Christians.

“Love is the primary reason for the existence of the Church,” said the Pope. “I speak, first of all, of the love of tenderness and mercy that God the Father has for every human being and that Jesus the Son has revealed to us with His life, His death, and His resurrection.”

Each of us, he added, is invited to respond to God’s love for us with love for Him and for our brothers and sisters.

Joy in knowing Jesus and making him known

Pope Francis recalled Pope Benedict XVI’s encyclical Deus caritas est and his assertion that our Christian life flows from an encounter with Jesus, which gives our lives a new horizon and direction.

"Growing Together" ecumenical events open with Anglican and Catholic Bishops
22 January 2024, 17:35

Catholic and Anglican Bishops are undertaking a week of dialogue, prayer, and pilgrimages to Rome and Canterbury, involving 50 bishops from 27 countries to mark the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.
By Vatican News

During the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, Bishops from the Anglican and Roman Catholic traditions are gathering for "Growing Together", a week-long summit of ecumenical discussion and pilgrimage to be held in Rome and Canterbury from 22-29 January 2024.

Worldwide representation

The Bishops will arrive in pairs—Anglicans and Catholics—representing various countries around the world. More than 50 Bishops from 27 countries will participate.

As they visit sacred sites in Rome and Canterbury, the Bishops will pray, reflect, and learn from each other. The goal is to discuss ways to grow together in witness and mission in the world.

Symbolic moment

On 25 January, at the tomb of the Apostle Paul, Pope Francis and the Archbishop of Canterbury will send the Bishops in pairs to be witnesses to Christian unity.

The International Anglican-Roman Catholic Commission for Unity and Mission (IARCCUM) has organized the event and says it will mark an important and symbolic occasion for Anglican-Catholic ties and the advancement of ecumenical dialogue.

Year of Prayer: Pope Francis to set up 'School of Prayer'
23 January 2024, 12:42

As the Year of Prayer gets underway, the Prefect and Undersecretary of the Dicastery for Evangelisation explain its purpose as helping Catholics prepare for the 2025 Jubilee, announcing that Pope Francis will set up a "School of Prayer" to explore various aspects of every Christian's "breath of faith."
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

On Sunday, Pope Francis inaugurated a Year of Prayer ahead of the 2025 Jubilee, calling on the faithful “to pray more fervently to prepare ourselves to live properly this grace-filled event and to experience the power of hope in God.”

The Year of Prayer, the Holy Father explained, is dedicated “to rediscovering the great value and absolute need for prayer, prayer in personal life, in the life of the Church, prayer in the world.”

The Holy See Press Office presented the Year of Prayer on Tuesday at a press conference held by Archbishop Rino Fisichella, Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelisation, and Monsignor Graham Bell, Undersecretary of the Dicastery, whose Section is in charge of coordinating the Year of Prayer.

Pope’s liturgical schedule includes canonization of Argentine Blessed
09 January 2024, 12:36

The Prefecture of the Papal Household releases the schedule of Pope Francis' liturgical celebrations for January and February, which includes the canonization of Blessed Maria Antonia of Saint Joseph de Paz y Figueroa, born in what is now Argentina.
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis is set to canonize fellow Argentinian Blessed Maria Antonia of Saint Joseph de Paz y Figueroa in Saint Peter’s Basilica on 11 February, the Sixth Sunday of Ordinary Time.

Blessed Maria Antonia of St. Joseph spent much of her life promoting retreats in the Ignatian tradition following the expulsion of the Jesuits from Spain in the second half of the 18th century. She was beatified by Pope Francis in August 2016.

The canonization of Blessed Maria Antonia is part of a busy schedule of liturgical events for the Pope over the next few weeks.

Pope at Audience: Gluttony distorts God's gift of 'our daily bread'
10 January 2024, 09:14

At the weekly General Audience, Pope Francis reflects on the sin of gluttony, and recalls that imbalanced relationships with food can damage the planet and our own hearts.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Eating a slice of cake is not the issue, since Jesus Himself appreciated good food and company, but rather taking for granted or distorting "God's daily bread," which can slowly but surely destroy the planet.

Pope Francis offered this perspective during his weekly General Audience held in the Vatican's Paul VI Hall.

Continuing his catechesis series on virtues and vices, the Pope focused this week on the sin of gluttony.

Baldacchino in St Peter's Basilica to be restored
11 January 2024, 12:33

Ahead of the Jubilee year 2025, the Knights of Columbus are supporting a ten-month restoration of the Baldacchino over the high altar in Saint Peter’s Basilica.
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis has authorized the first “systematic and complete” restoration of the Baldacchino of St Peter’s Basilica, almost 400 years after work began on Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s baroque masterpiece.

The “challenging and necessary” restoration has “significant symbolic value,” the Archpriest of the Basilica, Cardinal Mauro Gambetti said at a press conference introducing the work, because the Baldacchino “marks with its magnificence the place of the Tomb of the Apostle Peter” under the high Altar.

Universités des communicants en Église

The Universités des communicants en Église (UCE) are organized periodically in different locations by the Council for Communication of the Bishops’ Conference of France (CEF) for Catholic communicators working for dioceses, religious congregations or Catholic organizations and associations so they can  share how to make their work more effective. The aim of this specific course in Rome is to prepare the French Church communicators for the Jubilee of Hope in 2025.
