14 January 2024, 12:11

At the Angelus prayer, Pope Francis encourages us to renew our joy as disciples of the Lord, and recalls how the first apostles went out looking for the Lord and upon finding Him shared their joy with others.
By Thaddeus Jones

In his customary reflections before leading the Angelus prayer on Sunday, Pope Francis spoke about the encounter of the first disciples in meeting Jesus, as recounted in John's Gospel.

Being a disciple of the Lord involves seeking, being with, and sharing with others our joy in discovering Him, just as the first disciples did in discovering the Messiah.

Pope: Let the Word of God renew our lives in hope and charity
21 January 2024, 10:32

Celebrating the annual Sunday of the Word of God, Pope Francis encourages us to be "conquered by the beauty" the Word of God brings into our lives, opening our hearts and showing us new and unforeseen wonders and horizons of God's love.
By Thaddeus Jones

Pope Francis presided over the celebration of the "Sunday of the Word of God" in Saint Peter's Basilica on 21 January. This year's motto is taken from the Gospel of Saint John: “Remain in my Word” (John 8,31).

The Pope established the day as a profoundly pastoral initiative to show the importance the word of God has in the daily life of the Church and our communities, a Word that is not confined to a book, but one that remains ever alive and becomes a concrete and tangible sign. The Vatican's Dicastery for Evangelization and Section for Fundamental Questions regarding Evangelization in the World, prepared a special liturgical and pastoral handbook for the annual observance, which takes place each year on the Third Sunday of Ordinary Time.

Pope at Angelus: Show how beautiful it is to love the Lord
21 January 2024, 12:29

At the Angelus prayer on Sunday, Pope Francis acknowledges that despite our limitations, Jesus still encourages us to witness, through our lives and our joy, how beautiful it is to love Jesus, and insists that announcing the Gospel is never time 'lost.'
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Like the Lord had much patience with His disciples, He has with us. Nevertheless, we are just as called upon to witness through our joy and our lives, how beautiful it is to love Jesus.

This was the comforting message Pope Francis offered during his Sunday Angelus address at noon to the faithful and pilgrims gathered in St. Peter's Square.

Pope at Audience: Avarice is a sickness of the heart
24 January 2024, 09:19

At the weekly General Audience, Pope Francis continues his catechesis series on vice and virtue with a reflection on avarice, saying the certainty of death is an effective reminder that we must be generous with our goods in this life since we cannot take our money beyond the grave.
By Christopher Wells

Avarice is a kind of “attachment to money that prevents man from generosity,” Pope Francis said at his Wednesday General Audience.

Continuing his series of catecheses on the vices and virtues, the Pope explained that avarice is not about how much wealth a person has but is a sin that affects us in a variety of ways.

“It is a sickness of the heart,” he said, “not of the wallet.”

Pope's Communications Day message: AI can never replace wisdom of human heart
24 January 2024, 11:30

In his message for the 58th World Day of Social Communications, Pope Francis urges humanity to cultivate wisdom of the heart in the age of artificial intelligence.
By Francesca Merlo

Pope Francis has released his message for the 2024 World Day of Social Communications, focusing on the theme: Artificial Intelligence and the Wisdom of the Heart: Towards a Fully Human Communication.

Celebrated on 12 May, this year's theme is closely linked to the Pope’s message for the World Day of Peace, which was devoted to the development of systems of artificial intelligence (AI).

AI is “radically affecting the world of information and communication, and through it, certain foundations of life in society,” says the Pope in his Communications Day message, adding that “these changes affect everyone.”

So, the Pope asks, “how can we remain fully human and guide this cultural transformation to serve a good purpose?”

Vatican establishes email address to report anticorruption concerns
24 January 2024, 13:02

The Holy See issues new norms detailing procedures for raising anticorruption concerns with the Vatican Auditor, via a dedicated email address, regarding anomalies in the use of financial or material resources, irregularities in tenders, and acts of corruption.
By Vatican News

The Holy See published a procedure on Wednesday regarding the steps for reporting financial anomalies to the Office of the Auditor General.

The procedure will facilitate the dissemination of knowledge and the possibility of "whistleblowing," or raising concerns about potential abuses, in force in the legislation of the Holy See and Vatican City State.

This is one of the most effective tools for combating corruption, provided for, among other things, by the United Nations Convention against Corruption, to which the Holy See acceded in 2016.

The Statutes of the Office of the Auditor General and the Apostolic Constitution "Praedicate Evangelium" provide for the Auditor General to be the recipient of reports on particular situations related to anomalies in the use or allocation of financial or material resources; irregularities in the awarding of contracts or in the conduct of transactions or disposals; and acts of corruption or fraud.

Email for raising concerns

The procedure states that reports may be submitted in writing, using a dedicated email address, which is segnalazionianomalie@urg.va, or by a confidential letter addressed to the Auditor General.

Pope to Roman Rota: Discern annulment cases 'with prayer, on your knees'
25 January 2024, 13:01

Pope Francis inaugurates the Vatican's judicial year and urges officials of the Tribunal of the Roman Rota, an appeals court, to pray fervently as they discern cases that hit their docket.
By Joseph Tulloch

On Thursday, Pope Francis addressed officials from the Vatican’s Tribunal of the Roman Rota, an appeals court.

In a speech delivered to mark the inauguration of the Judicial Year in the Vatican City State, the Pope discussed the process of discernment as it applies to annulment cases.

He discussed the tension between justice and mercy, the importance of prayer for the judges' work, and the close relationship between judicial discernment and synodality.

"An elderly priest, kind, gentle, fraternal, and peaceful in the face of wild and blind violence unleashed supposedly in the name of God."

This is the portrait Pope Francis has painted of Father Jacques Hamel in a message addressed to the 27th edition of the International Days of Saint Francis de Sales, which began on Wednesday in Lourdes.

The Pope’s message was read at the presentation of an award dedicated to Fr. Hamel, read out by Archbishop Celestino Migliore, Apostolic Nuncio to France.

The Father Jacques Hamel Award was given this year to two journalists: Canadian Sarah-Christine Bourihane and Italian Romina Gobbo.

Father Thaddeus Wang Yuesheng was consecrated bishop of Zhengzhou, China, on Thursday, bringing an end to a 70-year-long sede vacante.

The Holy See Press Office announced on Thursday morning that Wang was appointed by Pope Francis as the bishop of Zhengzhou on Dec. 16, 2023. The report noted that the decision took place “in the framework of the Provisional Agreement between the Holy See and the People’s Republic of China.”

The Vatican Fides News Agency, which is part of the Dicastery for Evangelization, added that his appointment “was also favored by the direct contribution of the various components of the local Church, according to the criterion of synodality.”

Pope at Ecumenical Vespers: ‘Christian journey to unity rooted in prayer’
25 January 2024, 18:25

Pope Francis presides over Ecumenical Vespers to close the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, and invites all Christians to avoid the devil’s trap of division through prayerful, selfless service.
By Devin Watkins

“Only a love that becomes gratuitous service, only the love that Jesus taught and embodied, will bring separated Christians closer to one another.”

Pope Francis offered that invitation on Thursday evening in his homily at an ecumenical Evening Prayer service held in the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls.

At the conclusion of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, the Pope joined the heads and representatives of various Churches for Vespers, including Metropolitan Polycarp of Italy, representing the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.

As a sign of Christian Unity, Pope Francis and Archbishop Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury and leader of the Anglican Communion, sent out pairs of Catholic and Anglican Bishops.

The Bishops are taking part in the ecumenical summit “Growing Together” in Rome and Canterbury, and were commissioned by the Pope and the Archbishop to “continuing to testify to the unity willed by God for his Church in their respective regions”.

Fr. Gabriele Martinelli, who until 2021 worked in the Vatican, was found guilty of corruption of a minor, following his acquittal on all charges in the initial trial due to insufficient evidence.
By Vatican News

The Court of Appeal of the Vatican City State, presided over by Archbishop Alejandro Arellano Cedillo, has sentenced a 31-year-old Italian priest from Como to two years and six months of imprisonment.

The sentence also included a 1,000 euro fine for the crime of corruption of a minor he committed when he was a student at the Saint Pius Preseminary from 9 August 2008 to 19 March 2009.

IOM Director General: Pope Francis offers eloquent voice on migration
26 January 2024, 15:42

Following an audience with Pope Francis, Amy Pope, the Director General of the UN International Organization for Migration, praises the Holy Father’s passionate advocacy regarding migration and laments how migrants are often vilified in election years.
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis met Friday with Amy Pope, Director General of the United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM), during a private audience in the Apostolic Palace.

In their conversation, the Pope and Ms. Pope shared a joke about their meeting being “an opportunity for the two Popes to meet.”

“I have to admit it was a real pleasure for me to meet the Pope,” she said afterwards in an interview with Vatican News, adding that she thanked the Holy Father (another papal moniker which might cause less confusion) for his advocacy on behalf of migrants around the world.

“He’s an incredible voice, and at this moment in time when so much of the rhetoric around migration is so negative, having someone like the Holy Father speak out so passionately and eloquently on the subject is incredibly important, not just for our organization, but for millions of people around the world.”

Pope sends greetings to Portuguese girl suffering serious illness
26 January 2024, 17:02

Pope Francis sends a video message to Edna, a young Portuguese girl with whom he had corresponded ahead of World Youth Day in Lisbon, encouraging her to continue her struggle with a life-threatening illness and to pray for young people.
By Salvatore Cernuzio

Edna Rodriques, a 17-year-old Portuguese woman, has suffered from a severe illness for the past eight years.

“The doctor said that he does not know when I will meet Jesus, but that it will happen soon,” she wrote to Pope Francis in a letter she addressed to him from the hospital in June 2023, ahead of World Youth Day in Lisbon.

Despite the prognosis, Edna still endures her great suffering and carries on with the same serenity that moved Pope Francis.

On Friday, the Pope greeted the young woman once again in a short video recorded by Cardinal Américo Manuel Alves Aguiar, Bishop of Setúbal (Portugal), who was one of the organizers of the WYD.

Pope Francis names U.S. Catholic marriage advocates as advisers to Vatican family dicastery
By Daniel Payne
CNA Staff, Jan 26, 2024 / 10:40 am

Pope Francis recently nominated two U.S.-based Catholic advocates of marriage and family life to a key Vatican dicastery, an honor that left the recipients both “stunned” and “excited.”

The Holy Father named Ryan and Mary Rose Verret as consultants to the Dicastery for the Laity, Family, and Life, according to a press release from the Verrets’ marriage ministry Witness to Love.

The Dicastery for the Laity, Family, and Life says on its website that it “promotes the pastoral care of marriage and the family on the basis of the teachings of the Church’s magisterium” and “works to ensure the recognition of the rights and duties of spouses and of families in the Church, society, and in economic and political life.”

Pope’s ambassador to U.S. moderates education forum in Florida
By Kate Quiñones
CNA Staff, Jan 26, 2024 / 06:00 am

Cardinal Christophe Pierre, the pope’s ambassador to the United States, was in St. Petersburg, Florida, on Jan. 24 to draw attention to the issue of education and discuss what is needed to help young people thrive in the modern world.

During his approximately 24-hour visit to the state, the apostolic nuncio moderated the education forum “Education and the Road to Destiny” at St. Petersburg Catholic High School. Bishop Gregory Parkes of St. Petersburg hosted the forum.

The forum discussed “The Risk of Education,” a book published by Italian priest and educator Father Luigi Giussani, founder of the Catholic movement Communion and Liberation, which has a small but dedicated following in St. Petersburg.
