Pope at Angelus: Journey through Lent listening to voice of God
18 February 2024, 12:10

As Christians take our first steps on the Lenten path, Pope Francis invites us to confront our inner struggles and to allow the voice of God to speak to our hearts.
By Linda Bordoni

On the first Sunday of Lent, Pope Francis took his cue from the Gospel of Mark that presents us with Jesus tempted in the desert (Mk 1:12-15).

Speaking during the Angelus address, the Pope reflected on the symbolic significance of the wilderness, urging Christians to "enter the wilderness, that is, silence, the inner world, listening to the heart, in contact with the truth."

In the desert, he continued, Christ “was with the wild beasts, and the angels ministered to Him. Wild beasts and angels were His company.”

But, in a symbolic sense, he explained, “they are our company too: indeed, when we enter the inner wildness, we can encounter wild beasts and angels there."

Pope creates study groups to explore themes from Synod’s first session
17 February 2024, 12:02

Pope Francis establishes study groups to explore various themes that emerged from the Synod session in October 2023, and sets the dates for the second session of the 16th Ordinary General Assembly.
By Vatican News

The General Secretariat of the Synod announced on Saturday that Pope Francis has set the dates for the second session of the 16th Ordinary General Assembly, which will take place from Wednesday, October 2, to Sunday, October 27, 2024.

The session will continue the work of the Synod on synodality on the theme "For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, and Mission."

It will be preceded by two days of spiritual retreat, from September 30 to October 1, with participants arriving in Rome on September 29.

Also on Saturday, Pope Francis released a chirograph establishing the creation of study groups to delve into some of the themes that emerged in the first Synod session.

The study groups will be formed among the competent dicasteries of the Roman Curia and the General Secretariat of the Synod, which will coordinate them.

Update: German Synodal Way

German bishops halt move toward establishing a Synodal Council at Vatican’s request
By Jonathan Liedl
National Catholic Register, Feb 17, 2024 / 18:35 pm

In a significant setback for the Synodal Way project in Germany, the German bishops will not be voting on a step toward a forbidden “Synodal Council” at their upcoming plenary assembly at the Vatican’s request.

German Bishops Conference (DBK) spokesman Matthias Kopp confirmed on Feb. 17 that the bishops have removed a vote on endorsing a committee that is preparing the Synodal Council, a mixed body of laity and bishops that would govern the Church in Germany, from the agenda of their Feb. 19–22 meeting in Augsburg.

The development comes after the DBK received a letter from the Vatican on the same day.

“This letter requests that the General Assembly — also due to upcoming discussions between representatives of the Roman Curia and representatives of the German Bishops’ Conference — not vote on the statutes of the Synodal Committee,” Kopp told Germany’s Catholic News Agency (KNA).

Although it had not been explicitly on the publicly available agenda of the DBK assembly, a vote on approving the committee preparing the Synodal Council had been widely expected to take place in Augsburg.

Rome to host 7th Day of the Catacombs, opportunity to reflect on early Christians
By Matthew Santucci
Rome Newsroom, Feb 19, 2024 / 13:50 pm

Rome's catacombs will open to the public for free guided tours and moments of prayer and reflection on Saturday, March 2, as part of the 7th edition of Day of the Catacombs.

A press release circulated by the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology, the event’s sponsor, announced that the theme for this year’s edition of the Day of the Catacombs is “from remembrance to prayer.”

Observing that “the pope wanted this year to be dedicated to prayer,” the press release went on to note that this event fits “into the preparatory journey to the Jubilee of 2025.”

The press release emphasized that visiting the catacombs is an opportunity to “experience an encounter with the memories and testimonies of the first Christian community of Rome,” and that they remind us of the “people, events, stories that are extremely significant and important even for the present.”

“So evocative memory, directly perceived and experienced, cannot fail to arouse profound reflection and therefore, for believers, prayer; a prayer addressed to the Lord, God of life and savior, but also to the Martyrs and to those who witnessed their faith, whose example and whose intercession support us on the present journey,” the press release continued.

Dicastery for Evangelization offers resource for Year of Prayer
21 February 2024, 13:38

The Vatican’s Dicastery for Evangelization releases “Teach Us To Pray", a guide book on prayer for Christians, as the Church prepares to celebrate the 2025 Jubilee.
By Christopher Wells

The Vatican’s Dicastery for Evangelization has issued a new resource on prayer aimed at inviting the faithful to “intensify prayer as a personal dialogue with God” and to reflect on their faith and commitment in today’s world.

The new guidebook, entitled Teach Us to Pray (Italian: “Insegnaci a pregare”), is the latest in a series of resources provided by the Dicastery to assist the Church as she prepares for the celebration of Jubilee 2025.

The title is taken from the request of Jesus’ disciples in the Gospel of St. Luke, which provides the framework for the Church’s preparation for the Jubilee.

Once again this year, the Vatican Museums, and the affiliated Pontifical Villas at Castel Gandolfo, are participating in the celebrations of International Women's Day.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Museums announced the creation of an original themed guided tour, offered on 7 - 8 March, to highlight the "creative gaze" and "tender heart" which Pope Francis has recalled as a distinctly feminine prerogative.

Update: Fr. Marko Rupnik

Doctrine of Faith reviews Rupnik case documentation as investigation continues
21 February 2024, 15:11

The Holy See Press Office offers an update on the ongoing investigation by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith into allegations against Fr. Marko Rupnik, the former Jesuit whom several religious sisters have accused of psychological and sexual abuse.
By Salvatore Cernuzio

The Vatican Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF) has contacted several institutions over the past months to obtain documentation related to Fr. Marko Rupnik, a Slovenian-born former Jesuit and artist.

The Holy See Press Office confirmed on Wednesday that the DDF’s investigation has been expanded into other ecclesial realities with which there had previously been no contact.

The Press Office said the investigation is continuing into allegations against Fr. Rupnik, who has been accused of inflicting psychological and sexual abuse on several adult consecrated women. He was dismissed from the Society of Jesus in June 2023.

On October 27, Pope Francis entrusted the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith with the task of examining the case, after deciding to "waive the statute of limitations to allow the proceedings to take place."

The decision was taken after the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, in September, sent the Pope some reports it had received regarding "serious problems" in the handling of the Rupnik case and "the lack of closeness to the victims."

Vatican official says Pope Francis will cause ‘new social dialogue’ in Argentina
By John Lavenburg
Feb 21, 2024

NEW YORK – According to a top official with the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, the unity of the Church that would be represented on a papal visit to Argentina could help create a new social dialogue and unity in the country at a critical economic and political juncture.

“In the Church we are together. People have different perspectives, but all of us are Catholics,” Emilce Cuda, the Secretary of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, told Crux. “That is Catholicism … working together with the people who think differently because we are Catholics.”

“So, in that sense, in Argentina the moment is absolutely critical economically and politically, and the people are saying that if Pope Francis arrives there, they represent unity and maybe they can help with a new social dialogue,” said Cuda, an Argentinian theologian.

Cuda also said the recent meeting between Francis and Argentinian President Javier Milei, who has previously spoken ill of the pontiff, was an important showing for the world.

“It was absolutely important not only for Argentine people but for other countries how to show that a person who in the past told Pope Francis not nice words, a person who represents another point of view or the economy and the politics, and Pope Francis received him,” Cuda explained.

Belgian bishops reportedly back women deacons, end to priestly celibacy
By Elise Ann Allen
Feb 21, 2024

ROME – In the lead up to this year’s closing session of the Synod of Bishops on Synodality, the Belgian bishops have apparently opened a national discussion on allowing women deacons and ending the requirement of priestly celibacy.

According to Belgian Catholic news site Kerknet, the Belgian bishops’ conference ahead of the October 2-27 synod have sent a letter to all dioceses proposing, among other things, an openness to the women’s diaconate and an end to mandatory priestly celibacy.

In the draft text, apparently sent to various diocesan discussion groups and councils throughout Belgium, makes three basic points, the first of which is that “a synodal missionary Church requires open dialogue with the world around us.”

The Church, it says, cannot limit itself “to a one-way street” when it comes to sharing the Gospel with the world.

Registration opened on Thursday for the 2024 National Eucharistic Congress, a “milestone” in the third year of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) initiative to renew the Catholic Church through the Eucharist.

The five-day congress will be held in Indianapolis from July 17–21 in Lucas Oil Stadium, which boasts a capacity of nearly 70,000.

“The National Eucharistic Congress is the milestone moment of a three-year initiative of the USCCB designed to renew the Catholic Church in the United States by bringing forth an encounter with the living Lord Jesus Christ in the holy Eucharist,” stated a Feb. 15 press release from the event’s organizers.

This year’s gathering is the 10th National Eucharistic Congress in the U.S. but the first since the beginning of World War II.

Pope cancels audiences due to mild flu
24 February 2024, 10:39

The Holy See Press Office informed journalists that Pope Francis has cancelled his engagements on Saturday “as a precautionary measure.”
By Vatican News

Pope Francis cancelled his engagements on Saturday morning “due to a mild, flu-like condition,” according to an announcement from the Holy See Press Office. The statement indicated that the decision was made “as a precautionary measure.”

Last week, the Holy Father took part in the Lenten Spiritual Exercises, a period of the liturgical year set aside for prayer and recollection.  Pope Francis has emphasized the importance of a personal experience of the annual spiritual exercises for himself and his collaborators in the Roman Curia.

During the past week, all of the Pontiff’s engagements were suspended, including Wednesday’s general audience. Papal appointments had been scheduled to resume today.

Cooperation and service at heart of priestly ministry, says Pope
24 February 2024, 12:01

In an address to deacons preparing for the priesthood in the diocese of Rome, Pope Francis highlights faithful cooperation, service to the People of God, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit as key aspects of priestly ministry.
By Christopher Wells

In an address prepared for deacons preparing for priestly ordination, Pope Francis reflected on three aspects of priestly ministry highlighted in the rite of ordination: faithful cooperation with the Bishop, service to the people of God, and guidance by the Holy Spirit.

Although a scheduled meeting was postponed on account of the Pope’s health, the Holy Father’s remarks were published on Saturday by the Holy See Press Office.

Pope: Education is an act of hope for a better society
24 February 2024, 15:32

In a message addressed to participants in a conference in Madrid on the Church’s commitment in education in Spain, Pope Francis highlights the importance for Catholic institutions to ensure that education is accessible to all.
By Lisa Zengarini

Pope Francis has reminded  Spanish Catholic educators that the Church is called to promote an inclusive education, where all students can unleash their potential regardless of their background, recalling that this has always been an essential part of its educational mission.

“Education is, above all, an act of hope in those before us (…), in their possibilities to change and contribute to the renewal of society”, he said in a message he addressed  on Saturday to participants in a conference organized in Madrid  by the Spanish Bishops’ Conference (CEE) on the Church’s commitment in education.

The session concludes a four months’ process started in October 2023 in which bishops, experts and Catholic educators from across Spain have reflected and taken stock of the work done by the Church in Spain in the field of education.

Pope at Angelus: Let's open ourselves to the light of Jesus!
25 February 2024, 12:13

During his weekly Sunday Angelus, Pope Francis offers the faithful a 'good Lenten resolution', inviting them to open themselves to the light of Jesus and to never let anything divert their glance from it.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

"Let's open ourselves to the light of Jesus, and let's never be diverted from His light!" This was the invitation Pope Francis gave the faithful today at noon during his weekly Angelus address.

In his remarks this Second Sunday of Lent, the Pope recalled the day's Gospel reading according to St. Mark, which tells of the Transfiguration.

After announcing to His disciples His Passion, Jesus takes with Him Peter, James, and John, ascends a high mountain, and there He physically manifests Himself in all His glory, showing the light "that is Jesus."

From this "light," the Holy Father underscored, "the disciples must never again divert their eyes," especially in moments of trial, such as those close to the Passion.

The message, the Pope pointed out, is "Never divert your eyes from the light of Jesus."

Due to persistent, mild flu-like symptoms, Pope Francis cancels his Monday audiences.
By Vatican News

"Mild flu-like symptoms persist. There is no fever. As a precaution, however, Pope Francis' audiences this morning are suspended," the Holy See Press Office announced on Monday. Although Pope Francis had cancelled his Saturday audiences for mild flu, the Holy Father delivered his weekly Angelus address to the faithful in St. Peter's Square on Sunday.

Pope Francis' next public event is expected to be his weekly General Audience with the faithful on Wednesday morning in the Vatican's Paul VI Hall.

Pope Francis accepts resignation of Polish archbishop accused of ignoring abuse
By Matthew Santucci
Rome Newsroom, Feb 26, 2024 / 00:01 am

Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Polish Archbishop Andrzej Dzięga, who has faced allegations that he ignored abuse cases in Poland.

Neither the Apostolic Nunciature of Poland, which announced the resignation on Feb. 24, nor the Holy See Press Office provided a reason for Dzięga’s resignation. The 71-year-old prelate, who has led the Archdiocese of Szczecin-Kamien since 2009, will not turn 75, the age at which canon law requires a bishop to submit his resignation to the pope, until 2027.

Dzięga published a two-page resignation letter on Feb. 24 in which he apologized to his “brother priests,” saying: “If my weaknesses, including incomplete understanding of specific circumstances, and sometimes even my ordinary human fatigue, became the cause of your anxiety, I am sorry.”

After apparent opening, Pope’s theological advisor closes door anew to Masonry
By Crux Staff
Feb 26, 2024

ROME – Just days after a prominent cardinal called for a “permanent dialogue” with Freemasons, suggesting that “an evolution in mutual understanding” has taken place over the last half-century, a top theological advisor to Pope Francis has reiterated the fundamental incompatibility between masonry and Catholicism.

Bishop Antonio Staglianò, President of the Pontifical Academy of Theology, also confirmed a November 2023 Vatican ruling that Catholics who join Masonic lodges are in a state of “grave sin” and may not receive communion.

“Within Freemasonry, plots of occult power develop which are in contradiction with Christian action,” Staglianò told Vatican Media. “In short, when we talk about irreconcilability, we are referring to profound contradictions.”

The comments came in the wake of a Feb. 16 conference in Milan that brought together leaders of Italy’s major Masonic lodges and senior Catholic officials, including Archbishop Mario Delpini of Milan.

PHOTOS: Restoration of Bernini’s baldacchino begins in St. Peter’s Basilica

Rome Newsroom, Feb 27, 2024 / 09:00 am

Restoration work has begun on the baldacchino over the main altar of St. Peter’s Basilica designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

Workers will scale the scaffolding surrounding the 92-feet-high canopy each day to meticulously clean the dust and grime that has darkened the baldacchino over the centuries.

The 400-year-old twisting bronze columns of the large canopy will remain covered by scaffolding until the works are complete in December in time for the start of the Catholic Church’s jubilee year.

Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, the archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica, has said that the scaffolding was set up in a way to allow papal liturgies — including this year’s Holy Week liturgies — to continue to take place in the basilica amid the restoration work.
