Pope’s Vocations Day message: ‘Pilgrims of hope, builders of peace’
19 March 2024, 12:00

Pope Francis releases his message for the 61st World Day of Prayer for Vocations, celebrated on April 21, and urges Christians to welcome our shared vocation to sow the seeds of hope and peace in our world.
By Devin Watkins

“Our life finds fulfilment when we discover who we are, what our gifts are, where we can make them bear fruit, and what path we can follow in order to become signs and instruments of love, generous acceptance, beauty, and peace, wherever we find ourselves.”

Pope Francis offered that summary of our Christian vocation in his message for the 61st World Day of Prayer for Vocations, which the Church marks on April 21, 2024.

Released on Tuesday, the Pope’s message focuses on the theme: “Called to sow seeds of hope and to build peace.”

The Holy Father noted that all Christians are called to welcome our God-given vocation to serve Him in the world, whether it be through the consecrated life, the priesthood, marriage, or even as a single person.

Gratitude, he said, should characterize World Vocations Day celebrations, as we recall the countless Christians who serve God in all walks of life. He especially invited young people to make room for God, so that they might find happiness in His call, which always respects our freedom.

“Let Jesus draw you to Himself,” said the Pope. “Bring Him your important questions by reading the Gospels; let Him challenge you by His presence, which always provokes in us a healthy crisis.”

Jesus does not only want us to become saints, but "intelligent" ones, and exercising the virtue of prudence helps us become so.

Pope Francis made this point during his weekly General Audience on Wednesday morning in the Vatican.

At the start of Audience, the Holy Father explained he would have an assistant, Father Pierluigi Giroli from the Vatican Secretariat of State, read for him

Pope Francis: Migrants challenge us as Christians
20 March 2024, 11:46

Pope Francis urges Bishops from the border regions of Colombia and Costa Rica, along with the Bishops of Panama, to “eradicate the indifference” toward migrants and refugees passing through the Darien Gap between Panama and Colombia.
By Christopher Wells

In response to the disciples' question to Jesus, “Where do you want us to prepare the Passover meal for you?” Bishops from the border of Colombia and Costa Rica and the Bishops of Panama have responded, “In the Darien [region], with our migrant brothers and sisters.”

It is there, Pope Francis said in a message to the Bishops released on Wednesday, “that they are waiting for us, on the shore of a sea of tears and death that unites men and women, adults and children from the most diverse latitudes.”

Pope changes statutes of St. Mary Major, focuses canons on spiritual duties
20 March 2024, 14:45

Pope Francis approves new Statutes and Regulations for the Chapter of the Papal Basilica of St. Mary Major, appointing Lithuanian-born Archbishop Makrickas as the new Coadjutor Archpriest and focusing its Canons on pastoral and spiritual duties.
By Salvatore Cernuzio

With a chirograph, Pope Francis has approved the new Statutes and Regulations for the Chapter of the Liberian Basilica and entrusted Archbishop Rolandas Makrickas with all the faculties to apply the new norms until a new Administrative Council is established.

In his chirograph released on Wednesday, the Pope "frees" the canons from all economic and administrative responsibilities, appointing Archbishop Makrickas as the new coadjutor Archpriest of the Papal Basilica of St. Mary Major.

Following the commissioning process assigned to Archbishop Makrickas, who was appointed as the Extraordinary Commissioner in December 2021, Pope Francis completed the restructuring of the Basilica he has visited over a hundred times and where he hopes to be buried someday.

A Rescript published by Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, Substitute of the Secretariat of State, outlines the new duties of the canons (priests belonging to the Basilica’s Chapter), the documents of the new Statute and Regulations, and the appointment of Archbishop Makrickas, "with the right of succession."

Five U.S. Catholic priests chosen to attend Synod on Synodality meeting at the Vatican

CNA Staff, Mar 20, 2024 / 16:45 pm

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) announced Wednesday the names of five parish priests who have been selected to attend a global gathering of 300 priests at the Vatican this spring as part of the ongoing Synod on Synodality.

In a March 20 announcement, the USCCB said the five priests consist of four Latin-rite priests and one Eastern Catholic priest, at the request of the Vatican.

The five priests include Father Artur Bubnevych, pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Byzantine Catholic Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico; Father Joseph Friend, parochial administrator of three parishes in the Diocese of Little Rock, Arkansas; Father Luis Navarro, a canon lawyer and pastor of St. George Church in Stockton, California; Father William Swichtenberg, pastor of St. Mary’s Parish in Appleton, Wisconsin; and Father Donald Planty, a canon lawyer and pastor of St. Charles Catholic Church in Arlington, Virginia. (Planty’s work with young adults at his Arlington parish was recently highlighted on “EWTN News in Depth.”)

The gathering, “Parish Priests for the Synod: An International Meeting,” will be held April 28 to May 2. Announcing the event last month, the Vatican said bishops were asked to give preference to parish priests with “significant experience in the perspective of a synodal Church” while also selecting priests from “a variety of pastoral contexts.”

Pope to Brazil's Social Week: 'May we see Jesus' face in the poor'
21 March 2024, 12:34

Pope Francis sends letter of encouragement to participants in the 6th Edition of Brazil's Social Week, which began Wednesday in Brasília, organized by the Brazilian Bishops' Conference, and seeks to build "a more just society where universal fraternity and social friendship are lived."
By Vatican News

"May we try to see in those who are forced to live in poverty due to social injustice the face of Jesus, who exhorts us not to remain indifferent, because, as He Himself said: 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.'"

This was the invitation that Pope Francis addressed to the participants of the Sixth Brazilian Social Week, 20-22 March, in Brazil, in a letter he sent for the occasion.

The event was organized by the Episcopal Commission of Pastoral for Socio-Transformative Action of the National Conference of Brazilian Bishops (CNBB) with the theme, "The Brazil we want, the good living of the peoples."

Belgium: Vangheluwe dismissed from clerical state for abuse
21 March 2024, 15:28

Roger Vangheluwe, the 87-year-old former bishop of Bruges, has been dismissed from the clerical state after being found guilty of abuse of a minor. Pope Francis approved the sentence following a re-examination of the case in light of "serious new elements" reported to the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.
By Salvatore Cernuzio

The decades-long case of 87-year-old Belgian Bishop Roger Vangheluwe, who was found guilty of sexual abuse of minors, has ended with his dismissal from the clerical state.

According to a statement from the Apostolic Nunciature in Brussels, Pope Francis on Thursday, 21 March, imposed the sentence on the former bishop of Bruges, who had resigned as head of the diocese in April 2010 after being accused of historical abuse.

Vangheluwe admitted, in particular, to having abused one of his nephews. The crimes of which he was accused, however, were barred under the statute of limitations.

German bishops to discuss Synodal Way with Vatican amid controversy
By AC Wimmer
CNA Newsroom, Mar 21, 2024 / 07:00 am

A delegation of German bishops is expected in Rome this Friday for talks with the Vatican about the German Synodal Way.

While the precise agenda is not a matter of public record, the encounter will likely focus on plans to install a permanent Synodal Council to oversee the Church in Germany.

Raising several concerns, the Vatican reminded the Germans ahead of the meeting — in a letter dated Feb. 16 — that the Holy See has not mandated them to set up such a council.

Addressing Bishop Georg Bätzing, president of the German Bishops’ Conference (DBK), Vatican officials told the Germans “that neither the Synodal Way, nor any body established by it, nor any bishops’ conference has the competence to establish the ‘synodal council’ at the national, diocesan, or parish level.”

Previous warnings from Rome have not always been well received, and the February letter, signed by Cardinals Pietro Parolin, Victor Fernández, and Robert Prevost — the heads of the Secretariat of State, Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, and the Dicastery for Bishops — may suffer a similar fate.

“I have the impression that we are not properly understood in Rome,” Bishop Helmut Dieser of Aachen told news agency KNA this week regarding the Friday meeting in Rome, reported CNA Deutsch, CNA’s German-language news partner.

While hoping for progress, Dieser, who supports changes in Church teaching on sexuality and gender, also criticized the Vatican: Noting Rome had invited bishops, not laypeople, the bishop said this was “not the style of leadership that we are trying to establish in Germany.”

Vatican holds dialogue with German Bishops about Synodal journey
23 March 2024, 09:36

Vatican officials meet with representatives of the German Bishops’ Conference to discuss several theological questions raised in documents from the Synodal process in Germany.
By Vatican News

The Holy See and the German Bishops’ Conference released a joint statement on Friday at the end of a day of talks in the Vatican on the Synodal path in Germany.

According to the statement, representatives of the Roman Curia met with several German Bishops “to continue the dialogue begun during the Ad Limina visit of the German Bishops in November 2022.”

The meeting follows a previous encounter held on July 26, 2023, and was “characterized by a positive and constructive atmosphere.”

Discussions focused on “some of the open theological questions raised in the documents of the Synodal Path of the Catholic Church in Germany.”

Representatives agreed to continue their dialogue through “a regular exchange” so as to address “differences and agreements.”

According to the joint statement, “the German bishops clarified that this work will serve to develop concrete forms of synodality for the Church in Germany, in accordance with the ecclesiology of the Second Vatican Council, the provisions of Canon Law, and the results of the Synod of the universal Church, which will then be submitted to the Holy See for approval.”

The next dialogue will be held before August 2024.

Meeting managers and staff of the Italian broadcasting corporation, RAI, Pope Francis highlights its mission to serve citizens by producing high-quality programmes and unbiased information for the common good.
By Lisa Zengarini

The primary mission of a public broadcaster is to serve citizens by providing them with truthful and accurate information, education, and high-quality entertainment, Pope Francis said on Saturday.

The Pope was speaking to managers and employees of the RAI-Radio Televisione Italiana, the Italian broadcasting corporation, whom he received on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of its radio launch and the 70th anniversary of its first public TV channel.

Pope prays for victims of terrorist attack in Moscow
24 March 2024, 11:56

Pope Francis offers his prayers for the victims of Friday’s terrorist attack on a concert hall in the Russian capital of Moscow, and invites everyone to pray for “martyred Ukraine” as the country faces heavy Russian bombardment of critical infrastructure.
By Devin Watkins

“I assure my prayers for the victims of the vile terrorist attack carried out the other evening in Moscow.”

Pope Francis offered that assurance as he prayed the Angelus in St. Peter’s Square at the conclusion of Mass on Palm Sunday.

“May the Lord welcome them in His peace and comfort their families,” he added.

The Pope also prayed that God might instill peace in the hearts of all people.

“May He convert the hearts of those who plan, organize, and carry out these inhuman actions, which offend God, who commanded: ‘Thou shalt not kill’,” he said.

Pope Francis chose not to read the homily prepared for Palm Sunday Mass at the last minute without explanation. The 87-year-old pope, who arrived at the Mass in a wheelchair, has had aides read some of his speeches for him in recent weeks.

Pope Francis: Youth are living hope of a Church on the move
25 March 2024, 12:00

On the fifth anniversary of the Apostolic Exhortation ‘Christus vivit’, Pope Francis invites young people to “make their voices heard” as they “bear witness before everyone to the joy born of friendship with Christ.”
By Christopher Wells

The “certainty” that “Christ is alive and He wants you to be alive” has inspired Pope Francis to write again to young people, on the fifth anniversary of his Apostolic Exhortation, Christus vivit, written in the wake of the 2018 Synod on “young people, faith, and vocational discernment.”

“Above all,” Pope Francis says in the message released on Monday, “I would like my words to be a source of renewed hope” to young people who may feel discouraged in a world “marked by so many conflicts and so much suffering.”

Pope to Rome’s Nigerian community: Embrace unity, reject division
25 March 2024, 12:25

Pope Francis meets with Nigerians resident in Rome, thanking them for their witness to the Gospel, and stressing that "the diversity of ethnicities, cultural traditions, and languages in your nation is not a problem, but a gift."
By Joseph Tulloch

On Monday morning, Pope Francis received Rome’s Nigerian community in an audience in the Vatican.

The Pope began by expressing his gratitude for their joyful witness to the Gospel message, as well as "the numerous young people from Nigeria who have heard the Lord’s call to the priesthood and the consecrated life", responding "with generosity, humility and perseverance.”

Some of them were present at the audience, the Pope noted, encouraging them to "always be missionary disciples", grateful for the Lord's call "to zealously proclaim our faith and contribute to the building of a more just and humane world."

The Vatican releases the programme for Pope Francis’ pastoral visit to the Italian city of Venice, on April 28, to explore the Holy See Pavilion of the Venice Art Biennale.
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis is scheduled to make a one-day pastoral visit to the northern Italian city of Venice on Sunday, April 28.

The Holy See Press Office released the programme for the visit on Monday.

According to the schedule, the Pope is due to arrive in Venice by helicopter, landing inside the Giudecca Women’s Prison facility.

After receiving a welcome by Venetian Patriarch Francesco Moraglia and several Italian officials at 8 AM, the Pope meets with around 80 female inmates in the prison’s courtyard.

He is then scheduled to meet with artists in the prison’s chapel, and view the Holy See’s Pavilion for the 60th International Art Exhibition – known as the Venice Biennale.

The Pavilion bears the title “With My Own Eyes,” and is dedicated to the theme of human rights and people living on the margins of society.

According to the Holy See, it seeks to draw the world’s attention to those people who are largely ignored while fostering a culture of encounter.
