Pope at Angelus: Eucharist makes us prophets of a new world
02 June 2024, 12:05

At the Sunday Angelus prayer, Pope Francis reflects on the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, and says the Eucharist helps us overcome selfishness and opens us to love and fraternity.
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis prayed the Angelus on Sunday, as the Church in many countries celebrated the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, known as Corpus Christi.

Ahead of the traditional Marian prayer, the Pope reflected on Jesus’ act of giving Himself to us in the Eucharist on the night of the Last Supper.

The Gospel emphasizes the dimension of “gift,” he said, noting that Jesus revealed His identity and mission in this simple act of giving bread to His disciples.

“He did not hold back His life for Himself, but gave it to us,” said Pope Francis. “He did not consider His being like God a jealous treasure, but stripped Himself of His glory to share our humanity and bring us into eternal life.”

Jesus, added the Pope, made his entire life a gift on our behalf.

Pope Francis: In the Eucharist, Jesus offers himself for the world

Rome Newsroom, Jun 2, 2024 / 08:59 am

Following the Angelus address, Pope Francis is scheduled to preside over a Corpus Christi Mass in the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran at 5 p.m. local time followed by a Eucharistic procession through the streets of Rome to the Basilica of St. Mary Major.

The Solemnity of Corpus Christi, meaning the "Body of Christ" in Latin, is traditionally celebrated on the Thursday following Trinity Sunday or, in some countries including the United States and Italy, on the Sunday following that feast. The feast provides an opportunity for the Church to focus on the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.

“May the Virgin Mary, who welcomed Jesus, bread descended from Heaven, and gave herself entirely together with Him, help us too to become a gift of love, united with Jesus in the Eucharist,” Pope Francis said.

Pope at Corpus Christi Mass: ‘War-torn world needs aroma of bread of love’
02 June 2024, 18:45

Pope Francis presides at Mass on the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, and reflects on the importance of the Eucharist in bringing peace to our hearts and our war-torn world.
By Devin Watkins

“God does not abandon us but always seeks, waits for, and accompanies us, even to the point of placing Himself, helpless, into our hands”.

Pope Francis offered that certainty in his homily at Mass in the Basilica of St. John Lateran, as the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, known as Corpus Christi Sunday.

The Mass concluded with a Eucharistic procession to the Basilica of St. Mary Major.

Pope: Interreligious Dialogue is necessary in the fight for peace
03 June 2024, 10:33

Pope Francis praises the Focolare Movement for fostering interreligious dialogue and for their efforts in unity, mutual respect, and peacebuilding.
By Francesca Merlo

Greeting members of the Focolare Movement, in Rome for an Interreligious Conference, Pope Francis opened with a moment of solidarity with the Movement's President, Margaret Karram, born in Israel to a Palestinian family. As he greeted her the Holy Father assured her of his prayers for her homeland, which he said is "suffering so much at this time".

Speaking after the event, the President of the Movement described her interpretation of the Pope's words as being that the Holy Father "prays for my land, where two peoples live and two peoples suffer".

Pope Francis: An encounter with a migrant is an encounter with Christ
03 June 2024, 11:28

In his message for the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, Pope Francis invites us to see migrations as a sign of the times and as a symbol of the Church’s pilgrimage throughout history.
By Linda Bordoni

“See in the migrants of our time, as in those of every age, a living image of God’s people on their way to the eternal homeland,” writes Pope Francis in his 2024 Message for the 110th World Day of Migrants and Refugees.

The World Day, celebrated annually on 24 September, is a call to believers to show support and closeness to the millions of men, women and children who are forced to leave their homes. The current global estimate is that there were around 281 million international migrants in the world in 2020, which equates to 3.6 per cent of the global population, and that number continues to rise.

Vatican publishes calendar for upcoming papal events
03 June 2024, 11:48

The Holy See Press Office confirms upcoming papal visits to Trieste (Italy), southeast Asia and Oceania, and the European countries of Luxembourg and Belgium, as well as liturgical celebrations for the Solemnity of Sts Peter and Paul, and a consistory to vote on causes for canonization.
By Vatican News staff reporter

Pope Francis has a busy upcoming travel schedule that begins a pastoral visit to the Italian city of Trieste early next month for Italian Catholic Social Week.

During the 7 July visit, the Holy Father is expected to meet with migrants and other marginalized people.

Later, the Pope will make two Apostolic Journeys outside of Italy. The first, from 2-13 September will take him halfway around the world, to southeast Asia and Oceania, where he will visit Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste, and Singapore.

At the end of the month, 26-29 September, Pope Francis will make a one-day visit to Luxembourg before visiting three cities in Belgium, where he will take part in celebrations marking the 600th anniversary of the foundation of the Catholic universities of Leuven and Louvain-la-Neuve.

The liturgical calendar released on Monday also noted that Pope Francis will preside at Holy Mass for the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, 29 July, which includes the blessing of the Pallia for new Metropolitan Archbishops.

Finally, on 1 July Pope Francis will hold an Ordinary Public Consistory for a vote on various causes for canonization.

New Paths: Pope meets with church officials from Amazon
04 June 2024, 12:17

Cardinal Pedro Barreto, president of the Ecclesial Conference of the Amazon, shares with the Pope the fruits of the synodal journey in the region.
By Johan Pacheco

“The Amazon recognises Pope Francis as the ‘grandfather’. That is what they call him, the grandfather, and for the native peoples, the grandfather is the wise person, the person who guides, the person who has no other interest than to be able to serve and encourage life."

That's according to Cardinal Pedro Barreto, President of the Ecclesial Conference of the Amazon (CEAMA).

He was speaking in an interview with Vatican Radio-Vatican News after meeting with the Holy Father on the morning of 3 June.
The meeting was attended jointly by members of CEAMA and the Pan-Amazonian Ecclesial Network (REPAM). Cardinal Barreto explained that they are two separate organisations: the former juridical, while the network comprises the territory of Amazonia.

“We have offered the Pope the progress we have made in recent years, after the Synod on the Amazon that was held five years ago, in 2019. And we have seen how the Ecclesial Conference of the Amazon is a mature fruit of this synodal process that has been followed throughout the Amazon,” said Cardinal Barreto.

During the meeting, they were able to express to the Pope their concern over the murder of environmental activists; and the exploitation of natural resources, “illegal mining, which makes the urgency of the situation ever greater due to the effects of climate change.”

The president of CEAMA shared that Pope Francis “thanked them for the work that the Church is doing throughout the Amazon biome and told us to continue working together, also because the synodal experience in the Amazon is like a model experience of what life in the Universal Church can be like.”

Pope recalls end of Nazi occupation of Rome
04 June 2024, 18:35

Pope Francis writes a letter to mark the 80th anniversary of the vow made in Rome in front of the Marian icon ‘Salus Populi Romani’ after the city was liberated from the Nazis.
By Vatican News

This is the first time the event has been commemorated in this way, writes the Pope in his letter to the Viceregent of Rome, Auxiliary Bishop Baldassare Reina, which was published on Tuesday evening.

On 4 June 1944, the people of Rome, together with their bishop, Pope Pius XII, implored Our Lady to save the city when a direct clash between the German army and the Anglo-American Allies was imminent and the city was facing "the nightmare of Nazi devastation".

Eighty years later, this is an occasion, the Pope said, “to pray for the victims of the Second World War and to reflect anew on the terrible scourge of war.”

“We cannot and must not give in to the logic of weapons!”

The innocent victims of wars in Ukraine, Palestine and Israel, Sudan, Myanmar and elsewhere challenge “the conscience of all”, the Pope wrote: “We cannot and must not give in to the logic of weapons!”

Pope Francis appoints new members to Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith
By Courtney Mares
Rome Newsroom, Jun 4, 2024 / 13:22 pm

Pope Francis has appointed two cardinals and an archbishop as new members of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.

The new appointments come as the Vatican office continues to grapple with the ecumenical fallout from Fiducia Supplicans, the dicastery’s declaration permitting nonliturgical same-sex blessings for same-sex couples.

Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, who has led the dicastery since September 2023, recently traveled to Egypt in an attempt to ease tensions after the Coptic Orthodox Church suspended its dialogue with the Catholic Church amid concerns over the blessings declaration.

Here is a look at the new members of the dicastery, which oversees matters of doctrinal orthodoxy throughout the global Catholic Church as well as the investigation and processing of sex abuse allegations against clergy.

Pope: Jubilee Year an occasion to cancel foreign debt
05 June 2024, 11:39

Speaking to participants in a Vatican conference on debt in the Global South, Pope Francis says that the upcoming Jubilee Year is an opportunity to cancel or reduce debt owed by poorer countries.
By Joseph Tulloch

On Wednesday morning, Pope Francis met with participants in a conference entitled “Debt Crisis in the Global South", organised by the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy of Sciences.

The Pope joked about the early start to the meeting, which was held at 7:45am, apologising to participants for “dragging you out of bed.”

Millions left without future

Pope Francis then moved on to discuss the debt crisis, underlining the extent of the problem.

“After a mismanaged globalisation, after pandemics and wars,” he said, “we are now faced with a debt crisis that mainly affects the countries of the Global South, generating misery and distress.”

This situation, he said, deprives “millions of people of the possibility of a decent future”.

Pope at Audience: The Holy Spirit makes us truly free
05 June 2024, 09:26

Basing his reflection on the Hebrew word for “Spirit”, Pope Francis explains that the Third Person of the Trinity is able to make us truly free.
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis began his catechesis on Wednesday with a reflection on the Name of the Holy Spirit, which is revealed in the Old Testament as Ruach, a Hebrew word meaning “breath, wind, or puff of air.”

This word, he said, contains “the first fundamental revelation about the Person and function of the Holy Spirit.”

Recalling the “roar of rushing wind” that accompanied the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the Pope explained that the name Ruach expresses the “power” of the Holy Spirit, which like the wind is “an overwhelming and indomitable force… capable even of moving oceans.”

Pope marks anniversary of Normandy Landings with call for peace
05 June 2024, 17:43

In a letter addressed to Bishop Jacques Habert of Bayeux and Lisieux, Pope Francis commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Allied forces landing in Normandy.
By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis’ letter commemorating the landing of the Allied Forces in Normandy on 6 June 1944 was read during a ceremony in Bayeux Cathedral on the eve of the anniversary, in the presence of religious, civil and military authorities.

Expressing his closeness to all those present at the ceremony, the Pope reflected on the collective and military effort that led to the liberation of Europe and on the immense sacrifices made.

"The landing generally evokes the disaster of this terrible global conflict, where so many men, women, and children suffered, so many families were torn apart, and so much destruction was caused," he wrote.

Evoking the image of Normandy's cities - Caen, Le Havre, Saint-Lô, Cherbourg, Flers, Rouen, Lisieux, Falaise, Argentan - and many others, which were completely destroyed along with the lives of innumerable innocent civilian victims and those who endured tremendous suffering due to the bombings, the Pope emphasized the importance of remembering these events to condemn and reject war unequivocally.

Pope to nuns: You are instruments of the Lord
06 June 2024, 13:38

Pope Francis invites Sisters of Saint Felix of Cantalice, and Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy, to surrender themselves to the Lord, to always trust His will, and to always give generously.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

"We are all instruments in the wise hands of God!" Pope Francis said in an address to Sisters of Saint Felix of Cantalice and Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy, who visited the Vatican on Thursday on the occasion of their General Chapters.

The Holy Father began the encounter by expressing appreciation for their visit to reaffirm their dedication to the service of God and the Church.

"Service," he observed, "is indeed a common element in your foundations, which took place in the same historical period of the nineteenth century, albeit in different circumstances."

Pope: Priests are not meant to walk alone
06 June 2024, 14:51

Meeting with participants in the Plenary Assembly of the Dicastery for the Clergy, the Pope emphasised formation, vocation, and the importance of the permanent diaconate.
By Adriana Masotti

Pope Francis met with participants in the Dicastery for the Clergy’s Plenary Assembly in the Vatican on Thursday morning, focusing on three main aspects: the ongoing formation of priests, the promotion of vocations, and the permanent diaconate.

The Pope emphasized the importance of priests living within a network of fraternal relationships because "we are not meant to journey alone”, and expressed his gratitude for the generosity with which the majority of priests work, in the face of many difficulties.

Pope Francis gives catechesis in garage of Roman condominium
06 June 2024, 19:45

For his third appointment of the 'School of Prayer' preparing for the 2025 Jubilee, Pope Francis meets an unsuspecting group of about 30 families in a Roman condominium garage from a parish in the city's western outskirts, and acknowledges that while fighting is normal, to try to make amends.
By Salvatore Cernuzio

This time the venue was not a parish hall or theater, but rather a condominium garage with a gravel floor, brick walls, trees and ivy all around, with shutters hiding parked cars and residents peering from balconies.

At the center was an armchair, in front of which sat about thirty families, couples with children, young people, and parishioners from the nearby Church of St. Bridget of Sweden, some of whom arrived after the meeting had already started, wearing slippers or house clothes.

Among them, was a lady who rushed down the stairs trying to fix her hair. “Oh my God, what a surprise, you could have told me earlier!”

And thus, he were had an entirely new setting for the third session of the "School of Prayer," a series of meetings by the Pope in Rome during the Year of Prayer in preparation for the 2025 Jubilee Year.

Update:  Synod on Synodality

Synod: Work begins for the Instrumentum laboris 2
06 June 2024, 09:14

Around twenty theologians from around the world have arrived in Rome to begin work on the Instrumentum laboris for the Second Session of the XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops.
By Vatican News

With the document Towards October 2024 sent last December to all the bishops of the world, the General Secretariat of the Synod asked the local churches and groups of Churches to deepen some aspects of the  Synthesis Report that are fundamental to the theme of the Synod, starting from a guiding question of the entire synodal process: ‘HOW to be a synodal Church in mission?’

During these months, the individual local Churches have carried out their work by sending their contribution through the Bishops’ Conferences, the Eastern Catholic Churches and the International Reunions of Bishops’ Conferences.

Pope: Foster dialogue and defend victims of war
07 June 2024, 16:23

Pope Francis meets with thirty-five students from the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy, the institution that has been training the Holy See's diplomats for over three centuries.
By L’Osservatore Romano

Introducing the Community, the President, Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio, singled out the fourteen students who, having completed their academic courses, are preparing to leave in the coming months for their Missionary Year.

After listening to their destinations, the Pope recalled the meaning of this mission, expressed four years ago to the then-President of the Academy, Msgr. Joseph Marino: to train the future diplomats of the Holy See to be close to the People of God, especially in the most distant mission lands.

This, in addition to rekindling their pastoral hearts, will be a powerful antidote to spiritual worldliness, a risk to which diplomatic service can expose them.

Pope Francis then advised all the students, but especially the departing missionaries, to take with them for reading and meditation the apostolic exhortation Evangelii Nuntiandi of his predecessor Saint Paul VI, which remains relevant.

Former employee arrested in Vatican sting operation for alleged fraud
By Crux Staff
Jun 7, 2024

ROME – A former Vatican employee has been arrested in a sting operation and is currently behind bars awaiting formal charges for trying to sell back a manuscript he allegedly pilfered from the archives of St. Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican confirmed Thursday, after the incident was first reported in the Italian newspaper Domani.

At least one individual with knowledge of the manuscript in question, however, has raised doubts about whether it actually ever was part of the basilica’s archives.

Although the report in Vatican News, the official state-owned news agency, does not name the suspect, Domani and other Italian outlets have identified him as Alfio Maria Daniele Pergolizzi, an art historian who ran the communications office for St. Peter’s Basilica from 1995 to 2011.

According to details provided by Domani, Pergolizzi, accompanied by another unidentified individual, met May 27 with Italian Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, head of the administration for St. Peter’s Basilica, to sell him a manuscript prepared by the school of artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini describing the gold necessary to decorate the famed Baldacchino that rises above the basilica’s main altar.

Everything you need to know about devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
By Christine Rousselle
Washington, D.C. Newsroom, Jun 7, 2024 / 04:00 am

The solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus falls on the Friday after the Corpus Christi octave, which in 2024 is on June 7. What exactly is the meaning behind this feast day? Below are answers to some common questions.

Why do Catholics venerate the Sacred Heart of Jesus?

“Devoting ourselves to the Sacred Heart is one of the easiest, fastest, and most pleasant ways to grow in holiness,” Father Ambrose Dobrozsi, a priest of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, told CNA.

“Many saints have done many things to grow close to Jesus Christ, but no way is more sure and more pleasing to him than to consecrate ourselves to his Sacred Heart through the Immaculate Heart of his mother,” he added.
