Pope: We need the Lord to open the doors of our hearts
29 June 2024, 09:04

Pope Francis reflects on the image of ‘doors’ in his homily for the Solemnity of Sts Peter and Paul.
By Christopher Wells

In his homily for the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, Pope reflected on the image of “doors” – the doors that opened up when Peter was freed from prison, and the metaphorical doors that opened for Paul when he was converted on the road to Damascus and later when opened the doors of evangelization.

For both Peter and Paul, the encounter with the Lord was “a true and properly paschal experience; they were set free: the doors of a new life opened before them.”

Pope at Angelus: The Lord entrusted his Kingdom to flawed St Peter
29 June 2024, 12:14

During his Angelus address for the Solemnity of the Saints Peter and Paul, Pope Francis recalls how the Lord entrusted His Kingdom to St. Peter, who despite various falls, was able to lead the faithful toward Christ by cultivating the Lord's holy example.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

"Peter received the keys of the Kingdom not because he was perfect, but because he was humble and honest and the Father had given him a forthright faith."

This was the comforting message Pope Francis offered during his Angelus address on Saturday, 29 June, as the Church observed the Solemnity of the Saints Peter and Paul, the Patrons of Rome.

The Holy Father took his cue from the day's Gospel reading in which Jesus says to Simon called Peter: "To you, I will give the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven" (Mt 16:19).

Pope Francis meets with climate activist Al Gore
29 June 2024, 13:45

Pope Francis receives Al Gore, the former vice president of the United States, in a private audience on Friday.
By Vatican News staff reporter

Pope Francis met Friday with former US vice president Al Gore, who is in Rome for a three-day summit sponsored by his “Climate Reality Project.”

According to a statement from the Holy See Press Office, Gore praised the Pope for the impact of the encyclical Laudato sí on the 2015 Paris Accords on climate change, and for the recent Apostolic Exhortation Laudate Deum. Gore described the Vatican as an example of “ecological transition” in practice, pointing to the announcement of the establishment of an agrivoltaic plant at Santa Maria di Galeria.

For his part, Pope Francis thanked Gore for the “‘climate concern’ that has always inspired his political activity.” The two leaders agreed “on the need to accelerate the transition despite the resistance of large fossil fuel companies” and “discussed possible forms of collaboration to try to have a greater impact on public opinion.”

Russia frees prisoners after mediation of Vatican
29 June 2024, 17:01

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says ten Ukrainian civilians held prisoner for years by Russia arrived in Kyiv on Saturday after the mediation of the Vatican, including even priests and a representative of the Crimean Tatars.
By Stefan J. Bos

Ten visibly tired, exhausted former prisoners arrived in Kyiv after the Vatican mediated their case. They had been waiting for this moment for years, hoping and perhaps praying that the world had not forgotten them.

Some had been captured years before Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Among those freed was Nariman Dzhelyal, deputy head of the Mejlis, a representative body of Crimean Tatars that was relocated to Kyiv after Russia seized the peninsula in 2014.

He was taken from Crimea, where he lived despite the annexation, one year before the war.

Pope at Angelus: A Church and a society that excludes no one
30 June 2024, 09:53

At the Sunday Angelus, Pope Francis reflects on the Gospel account of the miraculous healing of a woman with a haemorrhage and the raising of Jairus's daughter from the dead.
By Christopher Wells

“God does not discriminate against anyone because He loves everyone,” Pope Francis said at the Angelus on Sunday morning.

The Holy Father based his reflection on the two “intertwined” miracles in the day’s Gospel: the healing of a woman with a haemorrhage when she touched Jesus’ cloak, and Jesus taking the hand of Jairus’ daughter as He raised her from the dead.

Pope Francis presides at an Ordinary Consistory of Cardinals, which approved the canonization of 15 people, including Blessed Carlo Acutis, the first millennial to be made a saint.
By Devin Watkins

The College of Cardinals gathered with Pope Francis on Monday morning in the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace for an Ordinary Public Consistory.

The Pope led the Cardinals residing in Rome in praying Mid-Morning Prayer of the Liturgy of the Hours before they proceeded to review the causes of canonization of several Blesseds.

Cardinal Marcelo Semeraro, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of the Saints, presented a brief report—known in Latin as the Peroratio—on the lives and miracles of the 15 people under consideration, after which the Consistory voted and approved their canonization.

Pope’s July prayer intention: For pastoral care of the sick
02 July 2024, 16:00

Pope Francis releases his prayer intention for the month of July, and invites Christians to pray that the Church might show God’s closeness to people enduring illness.
By Devin Watkins

“Let us pray that the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick grant the Lord’s strength to those who receive it and to their loved ones, and that it may become for everyone an ever more visible sign of compassion and hope.”

Pope Francis offered that invitation to Christians around the world in The Pope Video, which accompanies his monthly prayer intention.

The Pope is inviting the Church to pray for the pastoral care of the sick during the month of July 2024.

In the video, he recalled that the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not only for people at death’s doorstep.

If someone thinks that a priest offering the sacrament means that they are about to die, said the Pope, they have embraced a hopeless vision.

“Let us remember that the Anointing of the Sick is one of the ‘sacraments of healing,’ of ‘restoration,’ that heals the spirit,” said the Pope.

He added that the sacrament is always available for people who are ill, especially the elderly.

“When a person is very ill,” he said, “it’s advisable to give them the Anointing of the Sick.”

Pope Francis concluded by praying that the sacrament may become a more visible sign of compassion and hope.

Migrants meet with Pope: He is like a father for all of us
03 July 2024, 10:31

Pope Francis meets with a group of migrants including authors from Senegal and Gambia who have written books about their struggles in search of a new home.
By Alessandro De Carolis

Pope Francis’ meeting with migrants on Tuesday afternoon was not the first such encounter. Each, however, follows a similar pattern, and each time “a great moment of grace” is repeated.
A group of migrants visited Casa Santa Marta to get to know a man they see as a “father” and a “shepherd to all,” in the words of Fr Mattia Ferrari, who accompanied the group.

Vatican official to testify in London property trial at UK High Court
03 July 2024, 11:31

Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, the Substitute of the Secretariat of State, will appear at the British High Court in London on July 4–8 to testify in a trial regarding the Vatican’s purchase and sale of the property on Sloane Avenue in Chelsea.
By Salvatore Cernuzio – London

Over 8 months after the conclusion of the trial in the Vatican Tribunal regarding the purchase and sale of the London property, which saw the conviction of ten defendants for various crimes including fraud and corruption, the issue of the Sloane Avenue property has returned to the forefront in another judicial proceeding, this time at His Majesty's High Court of Justice in England.

The trial began on June 24 following a civil complaint filed in 2020 in England by Raffaele Mincione, the financier among the ten defendants in the Vatican trial. The Vatican Tribunal sentenced him to 5 years and 6 months imprisonment, plus an 8,000-euro fine and permanent disqualification from public office, for money laundering, embezzlement, and corruption.

The Federal Court of Appeals in Switzerland had also expressed its opinion on the matter, confirming in 2021-22 the seizure of almost 100 million euros from some defendants, including Mincione.

Mincione initiated this civil proceeding, aiming to obtain around thirty declarations from the High Court affirming that he "acted in good faith" in the transactions with the Holy See for the purchase and sale of the London property.

The Secretariat of State, however, has always contested the inflated price of the property and the special powers Mincione acquired in the various transactions beyond the contracts.

Vatican to publish Instrumentum Laboris for October’s Synod on Synodality meeting
By Hannah Brockhaus
Rome Newsroom, Jul 3, 2024 / 10:55 am

The Vatican will publish next week the guiding document for discussions at the final assembly of the Catholic Church’s yearslong Synod on Synodality.

The Instrumentum Laboris, or “working tool” for the upcoming 16th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, will be presented at a July 9 press conference by Cardinals Mario Grech and Jean-Claude Hollerich, together with the special secretaries of the synodal assembly.

Dubbed the “Instrumentum Laboris 2,” the document has been in preparation since early June, when approximately 20 experts in theology, ecclesiology, and canon law held a closed-door meeting to analyze synod reports from dioceses and religious communities.

The Instrumentum Laboris will guide the discussions at an assembly at the Vatican in October. The monthlong gathering is the second session of a two-part assembly of the Synod on Synodality. The first session was held in October 2023.

Archbishop Peña Parra gives testimony at British High Court

The Substitute of the Secretariat of State gives testimony at the British High Court in London in the civil case brought by financier Raffaele Mincione. He answers questions from Mincione's lawyer regarding financial relations with broker Gianluigi Torzi and efforts to force him to relinquish control of the Sloane Avenue property.
By Salvatore Cernuzio, London

The two-and-a-half hour interrogation in English at the High Court of Justice in London of Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, Substitute of the Secretariat of State, highlighted details regarding the situation into which broker Gianluigi Torzi, convicted in first instance by a Vatican Court also for extortion, involved him and the Secretariat of State with the sale of the London building. Archbishop Peña Parra spoke about the "lies and deception" up until the end, feeling "trapped" and being "forced" to accept Gianluigi Torzi's demands in ending all relations with him. He explained how the broker, arrested in 2020 in the Vatican and soon to be released, was paid two invoices of £5 million and £10 million in the name of his companies Sunset Enterprise and Lighthouse to exit the deal and cede total control to the Holy See of the London building it owned. "I felt totally mocked," said Archbishop Peña Parra in the only words spoken in Italian.

A press release from the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith declares the excommunication “latae sententiae” incurred by the former nuncio to the United States, who does not recognize the legitimacy of Pope Francis or of the Second Vatican Council.
Vatican News

Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, the former apostolic nuncio to the United States of America, has incurred the penalty of excommunication for having abandoned communion with the Bishop of Rome and the Catholic Church.

A press release issued by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith states: “On 4 July 2024, the Congress of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith met to conclude the extrajudicial penal process referred to in canon 1720 CIC against the Most Reverend Carlo Maria Viganò, titular Archbishop of Ulpiana, accused of the reserved delict of schism (canons 751 and 1364 CIC; art. 2 SST).”

The communiqué continues, “His public statements manifesting his refusal to recognize and submit to the Supreme Pontiff, his rejection of communion with the members of the Church subject to him, and of the legitimacy and magisterial authority of the Second Vatican Council are well known.

“At the conclusion of the penal process, the Most Reverend Carlo Maria Viganò was found guilty of the reserved delict of schism."

Further, the press release notes, “The Dicastery declared the latae sententiae excommunication in accordance with canon 1364 § 1 CIC. The lifting of the censure in these cases is reserved to the Apostolic See.”

Finally, the statement says, “This decision was communicated to the Most Reverend Viganò on 5 July 2024.”

Re: Vatican financial trial

Archbishop Peña Parra misled about London contracts
05 July 2024, 20:25

During the second hearing at London’s High Court of Justice concerning the Sloane Avenue property affair, the focus is again on dealings with the broker Gianluigi Torzi. Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra reiterates that he would never have ratified the agreements with financier Raffaele Mincione and Torzi had he been properly informed.
By Salvatore Cernuzio - London

"Traps"

Relations with the broker, Gianluigi Torzi, and other figures described as "wolves in sheep's clothing" that orbited around the Vatican were central in the second interrogation of Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, Substitute of the Secretariat of State. The all-day interrogation took place at the High Court of Justice in London, As in the first hearing yesterday, the interrogation was led by Raffaele Mincione’s lawyer, Charles Samek, whose legal action initiated the ongoing civil trial that began on June 24. Like at Thursday's hearing, there was little mention of transactions with Mincione, manager of the fund that held the Sloane Avenue property. Instead, the focus was primarily on dealings with Torzi (convicted in the first instance by a Vatican court), to whose Gutt fund the management of the building had passed thanks to an agreement granting the broker a thousand shares with voting rights, thus total control of the property. Archbishop Peña Parra described it as a "trap," which forced the Holy See, after a series of pressures and even threats from Torzi (such as selling the property to third parties or using its revenues to fund his companies), to pay the 15 million euros he demanded to end all relations. The payment was made in two instalments of 10 and 5 million, certified with invoices demanded by Torzi, partly referring to "consultations" that were never rendered.

Pope Francis appoints new prefect of Vatican archives
By Courtney Mares
Vatican City, Jul 6, 2024 / 09:05 am

Pope Francis has named an Augustinian priest as the new prefect of the Vatican Apostolic Archive, which preserves Church documents dating back to the eighth century.

The Vatican announced on July 5 that Father Rocco Ronzani, a patristics professor from Rome, will serve as the head of what was formerly called the Vatican’s “secret archive.”

The Vatican Apostolic Archive contains 53 miles of underground shelving preserving documentation from historic papacies, ecumenical councils, conclaves, and Vatican nunciatures, or embassies, around the world.

Pope Leo XIII opened the archive to scholars in 1881. Qualified researchers can request permission to visit and view specific documents.

Many historians researching World War II have come to the Vatican’s underground stacks since 2020 when Pope Francis opened the archives of the pontificate of Pius XII.

Pope in Trieste: Catholics called to heal ‘wounded heart’ of democracy
07 July 2024, 09:00

Pope Francis delivers the concluding address of the 50th Italian Catholic Social Week in Trieste, and calls on the Church to help correct the crisis of democracy through participation and political charity.
By Devin Watkins

On the final day of the annual Italian Catholic Social Week, Pope Francis traveled to the northern Italian city of Trieste on Sunday to share his thoughts on the crisis of democracy.

Speaking to over 900 delegates from dioceses and associations across Italy, the Pope appealed for a democratic process that engages personal and community involvement.

In his address, he recalled that the first Italian Catholic Social Week was held in 1907 and that later editions helped galvanize the Italian democratic process after World War II.

Pope at Mass in Trieste: We need the ‘scandal’ of faith
07 July 2024, 11:02

Pope Francis presides at Mass in Trieste for the conclusion of 50th Italian Catholic Social Week, and says the world needs the "scandal of faith" that enters human history and becomes a leaven of hope and a seed for a new world.
By Christopher Wells

What the world needs now is “the scandal of faith,” Pope Francis said during his homily for Mass on Sunday, which he presided in the Italian city of Trieste to mark the conclusion of the 50th Italian Catholic Social Week.

The Holy Father began his reflection by noting that Jesus Himself was rejected by His own countrymen, precisely because of His humanity. They saw only His ordinary life as “the son of Joseph the carpenter,” and could not understand the source of His wisdom and His miracles.

"A strong and powerful God is understandable and attractive," the Pope said. But a God who is weak, even to the point of dying on the Cross; a God who challenges us to life for others, as Jesus did, is "an uncomfortable God" that troubles and scandalizes us.

Pope calls for renewed commitment to pray and work for peace
07 July 2024, 12:25

At the conclusion of his Sunday visit to the northeastern Italian city of Trieste, Pope Francis calls for prayers and efforts for world peace, remembering in particular Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, Sudan, and Mynamar, all those worldwide suffering due to war.
By Thaddeus Jones

At the conclusion of Sunday's Mass in Trieste, Pope Francis asked everyone to renew their commitment to pray and work for world peace.

The Pope's words came just before leading the recitation of the Angelus prayer during his Sunday visit to the northeastern Italian city.

“From this city, let us renew our commitment to pray and work for peace: for martyred Ukraine, for Palestine and Israel, for Sudan, Myanmar and every people that suffers because of war. And let us invoke the Virgin Mary, venerated on Monte Grisa as Mother and Queen.”
