Pope commends 'Christmas Contest' for transmitting Christ's peace and joy
23 September 2024, 10:00

In his remarks addressed to the annual 'Christmas Contest,' the Holy Father reiterates how the Christ Child gives meaning to our loves and how Jesus 'speaks to them' in their annual Vatican-organized endeavor leading up to Christmas Day.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

"The Incarnation of Jesus Christ, who brings true peace to the world – and how much we need it today! – has inspired, over the centuries, countless artists of every language and culture, who have portrayed paths of fraternity in the world."

Pope Francis stressed this in his remarks to participants in the Christmas Contest 2024. His prepared remarks were delivered to the participants given his Monday audiences were cancelled so he could recover from flu-like symptoms ahead of his upcoming 46th Apostolic Journey abroad to Belgium and Luxembourg.

Pope Francis to travel to Luxembourg and Belgium
23 September 2024, 18:05

The director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, gives the details of Pope Francis' 46th apostolic journey outside Italy, now to Luxembourg and Belgium, headquarters of the EU's financial and administrative institutions. “Peace is a key theme at a time when the continent risks being pulled into conflict again."
By Salvatore Cernuzio

Pope Francis will soon embark on a new international journey, the 46th of his pontificate, when he travels to Luxembourg and Belgium. The Pope will leave on Thursday 26 September and return to the Vatican on Sunday 29 September. He will address a host of themes, including peace, migration, the climate emergency, the future for young people. He will focus on Church issues, including the role of Christianity in societies marked by secularisation and the contribution of Christian education. The Catholic University of Louvain, founded in 1425, is marking its 600th anniversary and this anniversary is one of the reasons for the papal journey.

In the footsteps of John Paul II

Offering details about the journey, Holy See Press Office director, Matteo Bruni, also gave reassurances on the Pope's health as today he cancelled his scheduled audiences due to "a mild flu-like condition" to which he added there are no updates and that, "for the moment everything remains exactly as planned." This journey also follows in the footsteps of Pope John Paul II's visits to the two countries in 1985, when he met with the students of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and the academic community of the Université Catholique de Louvain. These two events are also part of Pope Francis' travel programme. His visit also includes a beatification during Mass at the King Baudouin Stadium of Venerable Anna de Jesus, who led the monastery in Brussels for fourteen years. Pope John Paul II also celebrated a beatification in Belgium in 1995, that of Saint Damien de Veuster, known as Damien of Molokai, a great Belgian missionary who died among the lepers of Hawaii whom he had served at the cost of his own life.

Pope: Free Aung San Suu Kyi; Vatican ready to welcome her
24 September 2024, 13:05

The Jesuit periodical “La Civiltà Cattolica” publishes its account of Pope Francis” private visits with Jesuits in Indonesia, East Timor, and Singapore.
By Salvatore Cernuzio

“I called for the release of Mrs. Aung San Suu Kyi and received her son in Rome. I offered the Vatican as a place of refuge for her.”

Pope Francis made his appeal for the deposed Burmese leader, a promoter of human rights and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, during a visit with Jesuits during his visit to Jakarta at the beginning of his Apostolic Journey to southeast Asia and Oceania earlier this month.

The plight of Aung San Suu Kyi, in prison since 2021 after the military coup, and in general for Myanmar with its wounds, which has always been at the centre of his thoughts and prayers, were among the topics addressed by Pope Francis in conversations with the Jesuits he met in Indonesia, Timor-Leste, and Singapore.

The Pope received the brethren privately in three different appointments, as part of his long pilgrimage of 2-13 September to South-East Asia and Oceania. As is the ‘tradition’ of every apostolic journey, La Civiltà Cattolica, the historic magazine of the Society of Jesus, on 24 September published ample excerpts of the Pontiff's conversations in an article signed by Father Antonio Spadaro, undersecretary of the Dicastery for Culture and Education and one of the members of the papal retinue.

World Communications Day 2025 theme calls for gentleness
24 September 2024, 14:23

Pope Francis chooses the theme for World Communications Day 2025 that calls on people to "share with gentleness the hope that is in your hearts", communication that creates the condition for dialogue.
By Vatican News

The Holy See Press Office released the theme Pope Francis has chosen for the Church's 59th World Communications Day in 2025, Share with gentleness the hope that is in your hearts (cf. 1Pt 3:15-16).

The introductory text accompanying the theme notes that the topic aims to bring attention to the fact that in today's world, "too often communication is violent, aimed at striking and not at establishing the conditions for dialogue." This calls for efforts "to disarm communication, to cleanse it of aggression."

The theme description notes that the prevailing standard seems to be that of competition, opposition, and domination as can be seen in television talk shows to verbal wars on social media. It adds that for Christians, "hope is a person, and He is Christ." And this hope is tied to community, since "when we speak of Christian hope we cannot disregard a community that lives the message of Jesus in such a credible way as to give a glimpse of the hope that it brings, and is capable of communicating the hope of Christ with deeds and words even today."

The Vatican diplomat's remarks came Tuesday during the Conference titled “Freedom of Conscience and Religion in the Context of a Democratic State” in the Senate of the Republic of Poland.

Specifically, Archbishop Gallagher spoke on the topic “Freedom of Conscience and Religion in the Context of the Social Teachings of the Church.”

Speaking at the Summit of the Future, Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin says the United Nations high-level event offers a reason for hope amid the current crisis of multilateralism, and calls for concrete actions towards a safer, more peaceful, sustainable and inclusive world for tomorrow’s generations.
By Lisa Zengarini

Dialogue remains the key to address the current global conflicts, promote justice and peace, and restore the sense of belonging to a global human family, Cardinal Pietro Parolin said on Monday at the UN headquarters in New York.

The “Pact of the Future”

The Vatican Secretary of State was speaking at the UN Summit of the Future, which has adopted the “Pact of the Future” aimed at strengthening global governance to address challenges ranging from conflict to climate change and human rights.

The landmark declaration, in which world leaders have pledged concrete actions towards a safer, more peaceful, sustainable and inclusive world for tomorrow’s generations, passed on Sunday by consensus, despite a last-minute proposal for an amendment by some countries.

Re:  Synod on Synodality

7 Ways That the Synod on Synodality Can (Still) Change the Church

ANALYSIS: The October gathering could lead to several big changes that impact daily life in the Catholic Church.
Jonathan Liedl   Vatican   September 23, 2024

The most controversial issues may be off the agenda of next month’s Synod on Synodality assembly in Rome. But make no mistake about it: The Oct. 2-27 gathering could still lead to several big changes that impact daily life in the Catholic Church.

Delegates to the synod, which will conclude a four-year global synod process that’s focused on how to increase participation in the Catholic Church, will likely discuss and possibly approve proposals touching on everything from women in leadership positions to the ability of national bishops’ conferences to make doctrinal decisions.

The potential for impactful changes remains even after Pope Francis decided to transfer contentious topics — such as the possibility of women deacons and the discernment of controversial doctrinal issues (including those related to sexuality) — to dedicated study groups and not the synod assembly as a whole.

In fact, both concerned theologians and eager activists have speculated that by focusing on more foundational topics like decision-making in the life of the Church, the synod could actually “open the door” to efforts to change particular doctrines and disciplines.

And while participants like Cardinal Christoph Schönborn of Vienna have said that the specific topics of the synod “are a little up in the air,” the document that will guide October’s discussions, the instrumentum laboris (IL), already includes initial sketches of several concrete proposals.

More than 360 voting delegates — including, for the second year in a row, a significant number of women and non-ordained men — will discuss these proposals throughout October before voting on a final document. Pope Francis will take this text into consideration before writing his own post-synodal teaching — unless he decides to simply accept the synod’s final document as magisterial, as a recent change to canon law allows him to do.

Whatever the case, we’re in for a far more consequential October than those who focus only on “hot-button issues” would lead you to believe.

Here are seven concrete ways the synod can still change the Catholic Church.

Pope: the world is being destroyed, stop the wars while there is still time
24 September 2024, 18:55

In his message to the participants at the International Meeting for Peace organised by the Community of Sant'Egidio in Paris from 22 to 24 September following the Spirit of Assisi event called for by John Paul II in 1986, Pope Francis invites political leaders to silence weapons and exhorts believers to make fraternity grow in the world.
By Tiziana Campisi

“Stop war!  Stop wars!”. This is the cry of so many people raised by the participants at the International  Meeting for Peace organised by the Community of Sant'Egidio in Paris from 22 to 24 September. Pope Francis addresses “political leaders” in his message, saying "We are now destroying the world!  Let us stop while there is still time!" The message is addressed to all the participants at the meeting, with representatives of the churches, Christian communities, religious leaders of other faiths, and the authorities participating in the event that has its origins 38 years ago by promoted by John Paul II in Assisi.

The Lord protects us from being deceived by the devil....

Pope Francis gave this comforting observation during his Wednesday morning General Audience in St. Peter's Square, while, at the same time, urging the faithful to "never dialogue with the devil."

As he continued his catechesis series on the Holy Spirit, he turned this week to the Gospel account of Jesus’ temptations in the desert.

25 September 2024, 11:33

Pope Francis urges young people of the "Economy of Francesco" to transform the economy through love, witness, and hope, rather than power or wealth.
By Francesca Merlo

Pope Francis on Wednesday welcomed a delegation of “The Economy of Francesco,” a movement of young economists working to shape a new economic paradigm, one rooted in the Gospel, driven by love, and conscious of the wounds of our world.

Throughout his pontificate, the Pope has consistently called for an economy that prioritises human dignity over profit.

Pope Francis traveled to the Basilica of St. Mary Major on Wednesday evening to entrust his Apostolic Journey to Luxembourg and Belgium to Our Lady.

He paused to pray at the feet of the ancient icon of Maria Salus Populi Romani before returning to the Vatican, according to the Holy See Press Office.

A Facebook post by the Marian Papal Basilica noted that this marks Pope Francis' 120th visit to St. Mary Major.

The Pope departs on his 46th Apostolic Journey abroad on Thursday and will spend the day in Luxembourg.

He flies on the evening of the same day to Brussels, where he will spend three days meeting with the people of Belgium.

Pope: Luxembourg can be a model of cooperation on behalf of peace
26 September 2024, 12:26

In the first official speech of his eight-hour visit to Luxembourg, Pope Francis highlights the crucial role of the small nation at the heart of Europe in fostering European unity and peace, and decries resurgent nationalism and wars.
By Lisa Zengarini

“Luxembourg can show everyone the advantages of peace as opposed to the horrors of war... and the benefits of cooperation between nations as opposed to the harmful consequences of hardening positions and the selfish and short-sighted or even violent pursuit of one’s own interests.”

Upon his arrival in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg on Thursday morning, Pope Francis encouraged local government authorities to uphold its longstanding commitment to peace and to building “a united and fraternal Europe” amid resurgent nationalism and war looming on the continent.

Pope in Luxembourg: Service, mission, and joy are at the heart of the Gospel
26 September 2024, 17:00

Addressing the Catholic community of Luxembourg, Pope Francis emphasises the importance of service, mission, and joy, and calls on the Church to embrace hospitality, engage in missionary outreach, and live the Gospel with joyful hearts.
By Francesca Merlo

As the final event of the first leg of his 46th Apostolic Journey abroad, Pope Francis addressed a gathering of Luxembourg’s Catholic community. The event coincided with a Marian Jubilee, marking four centuries of devotion to Mary, Consoler of the Afflicted.

Speaking to the faithful gathered in Luxembourg’s Notre-Dame Cathedral, Pope Francis focused on three key themes: service, mission, and joy.

Pope Francis is in Belgium at the start of a three-day apostolic visit dense with events and encounters.
By Vatican News

A 55-minute flight from Luxembourg brought Pope Francis to Brussels’ Melsbroek Air Base on Thursday evening kicking off the second leg of his 46th Apostolic journey abroad.

The first to welcome him to the country were the Apostolic Nuncio to Belgium, Archbishop Franco Coppola and the Ambassador of Belgium to the Holy See, Patrick Renault, who boarded the papal plane shortly after landing.

Awaiting the Pope on the tarmac was the Archbishop of Mechelen-Brussel, Malines-Bruxelles, Luc Terlinden and a delegation of religious and civil authorities.

He was greeted by the guard of honour and a military band that played the national anthems of the Vatican and Belgium. A children’s choir also had songs of welcome for the Holy Father.

The last Pope to visit Belgium was Pope St. John II in 1995.

After a brief welcome ceremony, Pope Francis travels to the Apostolic Nunciature where he will reside during his stay in Belgium.

Catholic Church elevated in Estonia: Pope Francis creates Diocese of Tallinn
By AC Wimmer
CNA Newsroom, Sep 26, 2024 / 14:15 pm

Pope Francis has elevated the Apostolic Administration of Estonia to the status of a diocese, creating the first Catholic diocese in the Baltic country.

The Vatican made the announcement on Sept. 26, coinciding with the start of the pope’s apostolic journey to Luxembourg and Belgium.

The newly established Diocese of Tallinn encompasses the entire territory of Estonia and remains immediately subject to the Holy See. The pope appointed the current apostolic administrator, Philippe Jean-Charles Jourdan, as the first bishop of the new diocese.

Jourdan, 64, a native of France, has led the Catholic community in Estonia since 2005. In a recent interview with Omnes, he discussed the historical context of the Catholic presence in Estonia.

“Although we are now celebrating 100 years of apostolic administration, this does not mean that Catholics arrived in 1924. We have had a Catholic presence in Estonia since the 13th century.”
