Thousands gather to celebrate Mass with Pope Francis in Ecuador
Published July 06, 2015

July 6, 2015 - People wait for the arrival of Pope Francis to celebrate a Mass at Samanes Park in Guayaquil, Ecuador. The pope is expected to stress the need to protect the poor and the environment from exploitation and to foster dialogue among all sectors of society. (AP)
Hundreds of thousands gathered in the city of Guayaquil on Ecuador's coast Monday to cheer and wave to South America's first pontiff, Pope Francis, who celebrated Mass with a message of compassion for the weak and forgotten.

In his homily, Francis praised families as the bedrock of society -- "the nearest hospital, the first school for the young, the best home for the elderly" -- and said miracles are performed every day inside a family out of love. But he said sometimes the love and happiness runs out.

"How many women, sad and lonely, wonder when love left, when it slipped away from their lives?" he asked. "How many elderly people feel left out of family celebrations, cast aside and longing each day for a little love?"

Pope Francis started his day with a group of altar boys who took selfie photos with him after he landed Monday, and Mayor Jaime Nebot who gave him gold and silver keys to the port city. He smiled and waved as he traveled the streets in the Pope mobile.

Pope Francis celebrates Mass for families in Guayaquil park
06/07/2015 17:32

(Vatican Radio) The family is a ‘domestic Church’ where we learn to love and serve others, to show gratitude not greed, and to ask forgiveness when we have caused harm. That was the theme Pope Francis’ homily at Mass in Ecuador’s main commercial city of Guayaquil, located on the Pacific coast of the South American nation. The Pope travelled to the port city from the capital Quito to celebrate an open air Mass on Monday, the first full day of his pastoral visit to Ecuador, Bolivia and Paraguay.

In his homily, Pope Francis reflected on the Gospel passage of the wedding in Cana, where Mary shows herself concerned for the needs of others and tells her son Jesus that the wine has run out. Wine is a sign of “happiness, love and plenty”, the Pope said, noting that many young, old and lonely people sense that “these are no longer found in their homes”.

The Pope urged his listeners to open their hearts, like Mary, to hear the words of Jesus who came to serve, especially those on the peripheries, the hopeless and the loveless. “Say it until you are convinced of it”, he said, “the best wine is yet to come”.

The Latest: Pope Wraps Up Visit in Guayaquil, Flies to Quito
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS  JULY 6, 2015, 6:10 P.M. E.D.T.

QUITO, Ecuador — Here are the latest developments from Pope Francis' trip to South America:
___

5:20 p.m.

The pope has wrapped up a seven-hour stay in Ecuador's biggest city and is flying back to the capital of Quito.

During the day, Pope Francis celebrated an outdoor Mass for hundreds of thousands of people gathered under a broiling sun at Samanes Park on the northern edge of the port city of Guayaquil.

He then had a private lunch with fellow Jesuits, before heading to the airport and his plane back to Quito.
___

5:05 p.m.

Pope Francis had a chance to sample seafood from the Ecuadorean coast while meeting with fellow Jesuit priests in the port city of Guayaquil.

The entrees were shrimp ceviche and a chicken broth. Then the main course was grilled sea bass. Desert was tropical fruit and sweets made by women who work in a Jesuit school in Portoviejo, about 85 miles (136 kilometers) north of Guayaquil.

The Rev. Pedro Barriga, the 89-year-old leader of the Jesuit school in Guayaquil, says the meal last nearly an hour. He says the meeting was very informal, and the pope went around and shook everybody's hand.

Were the dishes tasty?

"Don't ask me about the food," Barriga said with a laugh. "I have poor taste. I eat everything they put in front of me."
___

4:30 p.m.

Before Monday, it had been 30 years since the Rev. Francisco Cortes last saw Pope Francis, who then was simply the Rev. Jorge Mario Bergoglio and was in charge of the Jesuit order in Argentina.

The now nearly 91-year-old Cortes must have made a strong impression with his work at the Colegio Javier parochial school mentoring young men sent to him by the future pontiff. His meeting with Francis on Monday was the only private one-on-one session that the pope scheduled for his visit to Ecuador.

After Francis arrived following a huge outdoor Mass in Guayaquil, Cortes gave a bouquet to the pontiff and they embraced.

Cortes told The Associated Press earlier that he was perplexed by the pope's invitation.

In his words, "I don't know why he set the meeting. We haven't even corresponded. I'm really just a Mr. Nobody."
___

2:45 p.m.

Pope Francis has arrived at a Jesuit-run secondary school in Guayaquil for lunch with a handful of fellow Jesuits.

Two youngsters presented Francis with flowers and other gifts as he arrived at the Colegio Javier. In exchange, they received a papal hug.

Francis also could be seen embracing an elderly man. While at the school, the pope is scheduled to meet with the Rev. Francisco Cortes, the 91-year-old headmaster known affectionately as "Padre Paquito."

When Francis was the Rev. Jorge Mario Bergoglio in his native Argentina, he used to send his seminarians on study trips to the Javier school in Guayaquil, entrusting them to Cortes.

Cortes has said the last time he spoke to Bergoglio was some 30 years ago and he couldn't believe the pope remembered him.

The Latest: President surprises pope with big reception line
The Associated Press | July 6, 2015  | Updated: July 6, 2015 9:08pm

QUITO, Ecuador (AP) — Here are the latest developments from Pope Francis' trip to South America:
___

9:05 p.m.

Ecuador's president had a bit of surprise for Pope Francis after their meeting at the Carondolet palace Monday evening.

The 78-year-old pontiff who'd had a long day in the sun on the coast emerged from the 50-minute session to find a reception line stretching into the distance.

President Rafael Correa spent a quarter hour introducing the pope to dozens of people: Ecuador's entire Cabinet, deputy ministers, military officials and others.

The pope then walked 50 meters (150 feet) to Quito's cathedral. Inside, he left a bouquet of white roses at the feet of a statue of the Virgin Mary, placed a rosary on its hand and briefly prayed silently.

He then went out on the steps to address a crowd, many of whom had waited hours to see him and endured a deluge.

But instead of giving the short speech that he had prepared, Francis offered a brief blessing for the "noble Ecuadorean people."
___

7 p.m.

Pope Francis is back in Ecuador's capital and he is making a formal courtesy visit to President Rafael Correa at the Carondelet Palace on Monday night.

Francis' gift to the president has a personal touch: a reproduction of an important icon of the Madonna with Child.

The original Byzantine mosaic dates from the 13th century and is in the Roman basilica where on Aug. 22, 1541, St. Ignatius Loyola and his confreres professed their religious vows. Their order became the Jesuits — the Society of Jesus religious order to which Francis belongs and which played a fundamental role in the history and development of Latin America.

Vatican mosaic specialists made a replica of the icon working with the same type of glue composition used centuries ago to affix the mosaics inside St. Peter's Basilica.

Pope Francis at Quito cathedral: a pilgrim sharing the joy of the Gospel
07/07/2015 04:30

Pope Francis at Quito Cathedral, July 6, 2015
(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis visited the metropolitan cathedral of Quito, Ecuador, on Monday, the second day of his Apostolic Voyage to Latin America. The visit to the cathedral followed a courtesy call on the President of the Republic of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, and included some remarks to the faithful, a small number of whom were gathered inside the church proper, and a great throng of whom were gathered outside in the cathedral square.

Emerging from the cathedral after a moment of prayerful recollection before a statue of Our Lady holding the infant Jesus, and another of silent adoration before Our Eucharistic Lord in the Tabernacle, Pope Francis greeted the crowd in the square and offered his blessing. “I'm going to give the blessing,” he said, “I'll give the blessing to each of you, for your families, for all loved ones and for this great nation and noble Ecuadorean people, that there be no difference, no exclusion, no people discarded, that all might be brothers and sisters, a blessing that goes to everyone and that there be none left out of this great Ecuadorian nation. To each of you, your families, goes the blessing, but first let us pray together a Hail Mary.”

And the people prayed the great prayer of Marian devotion, and Pope Francis blessed them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and then he asked the people to pray for him, and he bade them good evening, and took his leave.

Visit to the president of Ecuador and Quito Cathedral

Vatican City, 7 July 2015 (VIS) – The Pope spent the last part of his second day in Ecuador in the capital, Quito, where he paid a courtesy visit to President Rafael Correa at Carondelet Palace, the seat of the government. Built in the late eighteenth century by the Spanish architect Antonio Garcia, it is located in the historic centre of the city and owes its name to the governor Francisco Luis Hector, baron of Carondelet, under whose mandate it was constructed. During the colonial period it was known as the Royal Palace, but according to legend Simon Bolivar, in admiration of its facade, changed its name in memory of the governor.

Upon arrival President Correa greeted the Pope with a warm embrace; they then entered the Protocol Room where they spoke in private. The president subsequently introduced his family to the Holy Father and gifts were exchanged. Francis gave the Ecuadorian head of State a mosaic depicting the Virgin and Child, a copy realised by the Vatican Museums mosaic laboratory of the image from the Chapel of the Most Holy Sacrament of the Roman basilica of St. Paul Outside-the-Walls, before which St. Ignatius of Loyola and his first followers gave their religious vows on 22 August 1541, thereby originating the Society of Jesus.

Pope Francis: Evangelize with the Gospel of Joy
2015-07-07 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) In his homily during the “Mass for the Evangelization of Peoples,” celebrated in Quito’s Parque Bicentenario (Bicentennial Park), Pope Francis focused on the theme of unity and independence. The Holy Father spoke of Jesus’ cry for unity at the Last Supper, and Latin America’s cry for independence which is commemorated in the Park where the Liturgy took place. “I would like to see these two cries joined together,” he said, “under the beautiful challenge of evangelization.” He continued, "We evangelize not with grand words, or complicated concepts, but with 'the joy of the Gospel'."

Pope Francis address to Civil Leaders in Quito, Ecuador
08/07/2015 03:00

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on Tuesday held a meeting with Political, Economic, and Civic Leaders at Saint Francis Church in Quito, Ecuador. Below please find the official English translation of the prepared remarks of the Holy Father.

Meeting with Political, Economic and Civic Leaders

Saint Francis Church, Quito

Tuesday, 7 July 2015

 Dear Friends,

I am pleased to be with you, men and women who represent and advance the social, political and economic life of this country.

As I entered this church, the Mayor of Quito gave me the keys to the city.  So I can say that here, in Saint Francis of Quito, I feel at home.  His expression of affectionate closeness, opening your doors to me, allows me to speak, in turn, about a few other keys: keys to our life in society, beginning with family life.
