Pope Francis: Keep people at the centre of the economy
2015-09-12 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis met on Saturday with directors and employees, along with their families, of the Banca di Credito Cooperativo (the BCC) of Rome, an Italian credit union, on the occasion of the sixtieth anniversary of its foundation.

In his address, Pope Francis spoke of the importance of cooperatives, noting that these kinds of groups are frequently referenced in the Church’s social teaching, including in his own Encyclical Laudato sì. Noting his earlier meetings with similar groups, the Holy Father recalled seven areas of encouragement for cooperatives.

Among them, Pope Francis spoke of the need “to continue to be the motor that develops the weakest part of the local community and of civil society,” mentioning especially young people in search of jobs and building new cooperative enterprises. He also encouraged them to be attentive to the relationship between the economy and social justice; to foster and encourage the life of the family; and to build an economy based on honesty. Finally, he called on them to “participate actively in globalization, so that it might be a globalization of solidarity.”

Pope Angelus: Jesus frees us from selfishness, sin and self
13/09/2015 12:19

(Vatican Radio) In his Angelus address on Sunday from his studio above St Peter's Square, Pope Francis reflected on the Gospel reading from Mark in which Jesus asks the disciples "Who do people say I am?"

The Pope recalled how they responded, saying that some people thought he was John the Baptist restored to life, others Elijah or one of the great prophets, but couldn’t quite believe he was the Messiah.

The Holy Father noted how Jesus then asks a very important question "But who do you say that I am?" in order to test their faith.

Jesus, said Pope Francis is impressed by the faith of Peter who says “you are the Christ”.

But Jesus also rebukes Peter for thinking the way men think and not as God thinks when he tells the disciples "the Son of Man must suffer many things ... and be killed, and after three days rise again".

The Rigging of a Vatican Synod? An Excerpt
by Edward Pentin  09/09/2015

Here below is an excerpt containing Professor Rist’s contribution, as well as further historical perspective from Walter Cardinal Brandmüller, president emeritus of the Pontifical Committee for Historical Sciences.

How This Synod Compares with the Past

Many experts in Church history will say that the Synod on the Family was like no other that had gone before it and was, in both senses of the word, extraordinary. Professor John Rist, who wrote a chapter on patristics in Remaining in the Truth of Christ, noted two important historical aspects to the meeting.

Pope: follow the way of the Cross against the temptation of evil
14/09/2015 15:25

(Vatican Radio) If we want to move forward “on the path of Christian life" we must fall, just as Jesus did when he carried the Cross.

This was the message at the heart of Pope Francis’ homily on Monday morning during Mass at Casa Santa Marta
.

The Mass, which took place on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, was also attended by the C9 Cardinals who are meeting in the Vatican until September 16.

Pope Francis took his cue from the reading of the day which tells of the serpent in the desert and speaks of the temptations of evil that seduce and then destroy us.

Noting that the protagonist of the parable is a snake, Pope Francis pointed out that “he is cunning and he also has the ability to charm".

The Bible, he said, also tells us that "he is a liar and he is a jealous, and because of the devil’s envy, sin entered into the world." This capacity to seduce us – the Pope said – ruins us.

The Pope said “He promises many things” but when time comes, his price is high.

Pope Francis laments false friendship, fundamentalism
2015-09-14 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio)  In his first interview with an independent radio station with no connection to any religious organization, Pope Francis spoke about friendship, fundamentalism, and the defense of Creation, saying “You, an Evangelist, I, a Catholic, let us work together for Jesus”.

Pope Francis granted the interview to his personal friend and journalist, Marcelo Figueroa, at the Argentinian radio station, FM Milenium 106.7 out of Buenos Aires.  It aired on Sunday afternoon, September 13th.

The interview seems like a conversation between two friends – indeed, they have been for many years – so the theme of friendship takes a central place in the discussion.

Pope Francis emphasized the holiness of true friendship, saying “Friendship is something very sacred.  The Bible says ‘keep one or two friends’.  Before considering someone your friend, let time test him, to see how he reacts in your regard.”

Pope Francis speaks to Portugal’s Radio Renascença
2015-09-14 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis spoke about the refugee crisis during an interview with Portugal’s Radio Renascença which aired on Monday, calling it the “tip of an iceberg.”

“These poor people are fleeing war, hunger, but that is the tip of the iceberg. Because underneath that is the cause; and the cause is a bad and unjust socioeconomic system, in everything, in the world – speaking of the environmental problem –, in the socioeconomic society, in politics, the person always has to be in the centre,” Pope Francis said.

The Holy Father said the world must work to help people not feel the need to emigrate.

“Where the causes are hunger, we have to create work, investments. Where the cause is war, search for peace, work for peace,” he said. “Nowadays the world is at war against itself, that is, the world is at war, as I say, in instalments, bit by bit, but it is also at war against the land, because it is destroying the land, our common house, the environment.”

The Pope did, however, admit welcoming refugees is not a riskless proposition.

“I recognize that, nowadays, border safety conditions are not what they once were,” Pope Francis said. “The truth is that just 400 kilometres from Sicily there is an incredibly cruel terrorist group. So there is a danger of infiltration, this is true.”

The Pope said Rome itself would not be immune from this this threat.

Eleventh Meeting of the Council of Cardinals Begins
Rome,  September 14, 2015

The eleventh meeting of the Council of Cardinals charged in advising Pope Francis in the governance of the Universal Church has begun today in the Vatican. Also known as the C9, the council is studying the plans for reforming the Apostolic Constitution “Pastor Bonus” on the Roman Curia.

During their last meeting from June 8-10, the cardinals examined a draft Preamble of the new Constitution, and an update of the financial reforms, which was presented by Cardinal George Pell, Prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy.

The Council also approved a request by Cardinal Sean O’Malley, President of the Commission for the Protection of Minors, who requested that the competence to receive and investigate complaints of the episcopal abuse of office belongs to the Congregations for Bishops, Evangelisation of Peoples, or Oriental Churches, and that there is the duty to report all complaints to the appropriate Congregation.. The Pope also mandated the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith to judge bishops with regard to crimes of the abuse of office when connected to the abuse of minors.

Pope Francis: Church is a mother, not a rigid association
2015-09-15 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis says the Church is a mother and must have that loving and tender maternal feeling and human warmth as otherwise all that remains is rigidity and discipline. That was the message at the heart of the Pope’s homily on Tuesday (15th September) at the Mass celebrated in the Santa Marta Residence. Tuesday’s Mass was also attended by the C-9 Cardinals who are meeting in the Vatican this week.

The inspiration for Pope Francis’ reflections in his homily came from Jesus’ words spoken from the Cross to Mary and to the apostle whom he loved when he entrusted each of them to the other’s care. Jesus, he stressed, does not leave us orphaned, we have a mother who protects us.

Jesus doesn't leave us as orphans

“In these times where I don’t know if it’s the prevailing sense but there is a great sense in the world of being orphaned, it’s an orphaned world. This word has a great importance, the importance when Jesus tells us: ‘I am not leaving you as orphans, I’m giving you a mother.’ And this is also a (source of) pride for us: we have a mother, a mother who is with us, protects us, accompanies us, who helps us, even in difficult or terrible times.”

This motherhood of Mary, the Pope explained, goes beyond her and is contagious. From it, comes a second motherhood, that of the Church.

Without motherhood, only rigidity and discipline remain

Pope: "illness can be the way to draw nearer to Jesus"
2015-09-15 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis says faith is a key that helps us to see how illness can be the way to draw nearer to Jesus who walks at our side, weighed down by the Cross.

In a message for the World Day of the Sick, celebrated each year on Febuary 11, the Pope points out that it offers him an opportunity to draw close to those who are ill and to their carers

The theme of his message is “Entrusting Oneself to the Merciful Jesus like Mary”. In it he says that on this World Day of the Sick “let us ask Jesus in his mercy, through the intercession of Mary, his Mother and ours, to grant to all of us this same readiness to be serve those in need, and, in particular, our infirm brothers and sisters”.

At times - Pope Francis says – “this service can be tiring and burdensome, yet we are certain that the Lord will surely turn our human efforts into something divine.  We too can be hands, arms and hearts which help God to perform his miracles, so often hidden.”

Vatican welcomes Iran agreement, urges greater nuclear disarmament
2015-09-15 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) The Holy See has welcomed Iran’s efforts to reduce or convert its nuclear facilities to peaceful purposes in return for the lifting of economic sanctions. In a statement delivered to the 59th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna on Monday, the Holy See’s Secretary for Relations with States, Archbishop Paul Gallagher, said the Vatican “values positively” Iran’s recent agreement with the European Union and the so-called ‘P5 plus 1’ group of nations because “it considers that the way to resolve disputes and difficulties should always be that of dialogue and negotiation”.

The Vatican’s foreign minister spoke of the IAEA’s important role in promoting sustainable and integral human development, using nuclear technologies for improving agriculture, pollution control, water management, nutrition and food safety, and infectious disease control. But he also insisted that “spending on nuclear weapons squanders the wealth of nations”, adding that “the dubious strategic rationales for maintaining and even strengthening” nations’ nuclear arsenals are “morally problematic”.Billions are wasted each year to develop and maintain stocks that will supposedly never be used, Archbishop Gallagher said, adding “How are these expenditures consistent with progress towards nuclear disarmament?”

List of participants augurs another rollicking synod on the family
By Inés San Martín
Vatican correspondent | September 15, 2015

While most of the protagonists from last year’s hotly debated Synod of Bishops on the family will be back for Round Two, the Vatican made it official on Tuesday that one star of last year’s show will be conspicuously absent: US Cardinal Raymond Burke, who emerged as a champion of the traditionalist camp last year.

Burke, who was removed by Francis from his post as head of the Vatican’s Supreme Court shortly after the synod ended, was a leading opponent of a proposal by German Cardinal Walter Kasper to relax the Communion ban for Catholics who divorce and remarry outside the Church.

Nonetheless, there will be plenty of strong conservative voices in the mix, including three African prelates who aligned with Burke on the divorce issue in October 2014. They include South African Cardinal Wilfrid Napier, a special appointment by Francis, along with Cardinals Robert Sarah of Guinea, who heads a Vatican office overseeing Catholic charities, and John Njue of Kenya.

On the other side of the ledger, most of the progressive stars of last year’s synod will also be back, including Kasper as a special papal appointment. Also on hand will be Cardinals Godfried Danneels of Belgium and Reinhard Marx of Germany, both known as prominent backers of the Kasper proposal.

Teen Arrested for Planning Alleged ISIS-Inspired Attack on Pope
Sep 15, 2015, 7:00 AM ET

The FBI quietly arrested a 15-year-old boy outside of Philadelphia last month for allegedly threatening to launch an ISIS-inspired assault on Pope Francis while the world leader tours the United States next week, ABC News has learned.

The case, like so many others in recent months, highlights just how effective ISIS has become in using social media to radicalize Americans, particularly children.

“The minor was inspired by [ISIS] and sought to conduct a detailed homeland attack which included multiple attackers, firearms, and multiple explosives, targeting a foreign dignitary at a high-profile event,” according to a joint intelligence bulletin by the FBI and Department of Homeland Security issued to law enforcement across the country on Aug 14.

Pope urges EU Environment Ministers to work hard in view of SDGs
2015-09-16 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has urged EU Environment Ministers to work harder to put into place new policies to fight environmental degradation and poverty, which he says are closely connected.

The Pope was speaking to Environment Ministers of European Union Member States whom he received on Wednesday morning in audience in the Vatican.

Please find below Vatican Radio’s translation of the Pope’s address:
   Ladies and gentlemen, good morning!

I cordially greet all of you Environment Ministers of the European Union whose appointment, in recent years, has become increasingly important for the care of our common home. In fact, the environment is a collective heritage of all humanity, and each of us is responsible for it. It is a responsibility that can only be shared and that requires effective collaboration within the international community.

Thank you very much for having called this meeting which gives me the opportunity to share with you, if only briefly, some thoughts also in view of  important international events in the coming months: the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals at the end of this month and the Cop 21 Summit in Paris.

Pope Francis concludes catecheses on the Family
2015-09-16 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) During his General Audience on Wednesday, Pope Francis concluded his series of reflections on the family. The Holy Father said, “We are on the eve of beautiful and challenging events, which are directly joined to this great theme: the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia, and the Synod of Bishops here in Rome.” Both events, he continued, “have a worldwide breath, which corresponds to the universal dimension of Christianity, but also to the universal scope of this fundamental and irreplaceable human community, which is precisely the family.”

Pope Francis said that the world today seems marked by an economy increasingly subject to technology, an economy where ethics is subordinated to the desire for profit. “In this scenario,” he said, “a new covenant of the man and the woman becomes not only necessary, but also strategic for the emancipation of the people from the colonization of money.” It is precisely this union of man and woman that can help re-orient politics, economics and civil coexistence.

Pope asks for prayers for Apostolic Voyage to Cuba, USA
2015-09-16 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on Wednesday appealed for prayers for his Apostolic Voyage to Cuba and to the United States, which begins on Saturday. “I greet the Cuban and the American people,” he said, “who, guided by their Pastors, have prepared themselves spiritually” for the visit. The Pope invoked the “light and strength of the Holy Spirit, and the intercession of Mary Most Holy” the Patroness of Cuba under the title of the Virgin of Charity of Cobre, and the Patroness of America under the title of the Immaculate Conception.

The Holy Father also noted that on Saturday Pio Alberto del Corona will be beatified in the diocese of San Miniato, in Italy. Venerable Pio Alberto was Bishop of San Miniato and founder of the Dominican Sisters of the Holy Spirit. Pope Francis described him as a “zealous guide and a wise teacher of the people entrusted to him” and prayed that his example and intercession “might help the Church to journey in the spirit of the Gospel, bearing fruits of good works.”

Below please find Vatican Radio’s translation of the Pope’s appeal at the end of Wednesday’s General Audience:

Women protect humanity against evil, Pope Francis says

Vatican City, Sep 16, 2015 / 11:19 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Women have a special God-given role in protecting each generation against the evils of its time, Pope Francis said in characteristically off-the-cuff remarks during his weekly Wednesday general audience.

Reflecting on Adam and Eve in the book of Genesis, Pope Francis noted that this first man and woman failed at protecting the creation that had been entrusted to them by God, resulting in the inheritance of original sin for all of mankind.

However, God covered the nakedness of Adam and Eve as a “gesture of tenderness,” to show that He did not wish us to be left “naked and abandoned to our destiny as sinners,” Pope Francis said.

Rather than abandoning us to this “disease” of original sin, God set up a woman as a “protective barrier” against the evils of every generation, he added.

“This means that the woman carries a secret and special blessing” for defending us against evil, the pontiff said, recalling the woman from the book of Revelation who hid her son from the dragon.

Briefing on the eleventh meeting of the Council of Cardinals

Vatican City, 16 September 2015 (VIS) – The director of the Holy See Press Office, Fr. Federico Lombardi, S.J., held a briefing this morning on the results of the eleventh meeting of the Council of Cardinals with the Holy Father, which began on Monday 14 November.

“The proposal for a new Congregation, provisionally entitled “Laity, Family and Life”, was again taken into consideration”, said Fr. Lombardi. “In this regard Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi, designated by the Holy Father in recent months to prepare a study on the feasibility of the project, was heard. At the end of their reflections the Council presented to the Pope a proposal orientated towards the implementation of the project.

Consideration of the proposal for a new Congregation dedicated to “Charity, Justice and Peace” was resumed and further reflections were made without yet reaching, however, a conclusive proposal by the Council.

The Cardinals went on to reflect on the procedures for the appointment of new bishops, or more specifically on the qualities and requisites for candidates in view of the needs of today’s world, and on the related issue of information gathering. Naturally the theme will need to be explored further and developed in collaboration with the competent Dicasteries concerned.

Pope Francis urges greater care for street women and children
2015-09-17 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Abandoned children and exploited sex workers are a “shameful reality in our societies”. That was Pope Francis’s message on Thursday to participants at an  international symposium on the pastoral care of street people that has been taking place in the Vatican this week. The five day meeting, organised by the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People, has focused especially on the plight of women and children living on the streets.

In his words to participants Pope Francis praised the commitment of the many different organisations that care for street children and for girls or women who’re exploited by criminal gangs, or even by their own family members. He said “every child abandoned or forced to live on the streets, at the mercy of criminal organizations, is a cry rising up to God, who created man and woman in his own image.  It is an indictment of a social system which we have criticized for decades, but which we find hard to change in conformity with criteria of justice”.
